In de Amerikaanse staat Missouri heeft een 13-jarig meisje zelfmoord gepleegd nadat ze ontdekt had dat haar MSN-vriendje op het internet, waarop ze smoorverliefd was, niemand minder dan haar buurvrouw was. Megan Meier had een tijdje geleden een van haar hartsvriendinnen de rug toegekeerd na een periode van depressiviteit en een gevecht tegen overgewicht. Die hartsvriendin was de dochter van buurvrouw Lori Drew. Die was zo kwaad dat ze besloot om via het internet wraak te nemen. Dat schrijft De Telegraaf.
Vals profiel
De 47-jarige buurvrouw maakte op MySpace een vals profiel aan. Aan de politie verklaarde ze dat ze dit enkel deed om te zien wat Megan tegen een vreemde over haar dochter zou zeggen. Toen hun relatie op een hoogtepunt was, stuurde de buurvrouw een mail waarin ze zei dat Megan niet deugde en dat ze haar vrienden slecht behandelde. De wereld is beter af zonder jou, schreef ze. Even later vonden haar ouders haar hangend aan een riem in de slaapkamer. Niet strafbaar
Enkele weken later hoorden de ouders dat de internetpesterij de oorzaak voor de zelfmoord van hun dochter was. De vader van Megan was woedend en sloeg een kerstgeschenk, dat ze voor hun buren bewaarden, aan stukken. De onderdelen gooide hij op hun oprit. Internetpesterijen zijn niet strafbaar in Amerika. Daardoor gaat de buurvrouw dus vrijuit.
