    Mission # 59 -- May 28, 1944, Sunday AM
Bruges St. Michiel, Belgium -- Naval R.D.F. Headquarters

Bijkomende info over de aanval met de Typhoons 28 mei 44

The orb of 184 Squadron (Typhoon IB’s) mentions for 28/05/1944 :
    Form 540 :
The Squadron led by the C.O.flew over to Manston to refuel before crossing the sea to attack a W/T and Naval Station at Bruges.
The first R/P’s set a big house on fire, and all bursts were in the target area. Quite a lot of light flak cowing up from Bruges area.
    Form 541 :
Time up 11h55, time down 13h10.
Three sections of four aircraft led by S/Ldr. J.Rose DFC, W/O D.C.Campbell RCAF and F/O.J.P Jessee RCAF were airborne at 11.55 hours from Manston, each aircraft loaded with 6 x 60 lb. R.P.’s, to attack a Naval W/T Station 2 miles s.w. of Bruges, Belgium. Over target by 12.20 hours eleven aircraft (W/O. R.S.Downing RCAF having returned to base through hydraulic leak) dived from 10.000 to 3.000 feet 90 % of the R.P.’s in target area, with many hits on a large house or mansion in the centre, setting it on fire. Moderate light flak, no enemy aircraft. All aircraft landed safely at Manston at 13.10 hours.

The 2th TAF Daily Log mentions :
Typhoons attacked 1225 firing 88 x 60 R.P. from S to N diving from 10000 to 4000 feet. Majority of bursts in T/A setting large house on fire with some bursts amongst huts to NE. Previous bombing seemed off target as a pall of smoke seen 1 mile sw of target which was found undamaged. Intense L.A.A. from E of target. Mod. H.A.A. from Bruges. 1 A/C returned early mech. Trouble.

Typhoons were part of morning mission along with the USAAF Bostons. Field Order for the 97th CBW seems to suggest that each of the three A-20 Bomb Groups involved would be escorted by a RAF Spitfire squadron with R/V at North Foreland.
