Going through the ardennen and coming close to the central massive in france, and ofcourse the pyrenees, we have to train going uphill. So for as a starter I planned a route to Aachen (Germany) there and back via Maastricht. It is not that it's high but it is a constant up and down, some roads of 10% and 12% up. Of we went 8.30am packed and full of umpff. Weather was fantastic blue sky all day long. From home to Maastricht station no problemas, followed the map and gps directions, which I loaded last night, just outside Maastricht lies a little village Bemelen, road going up 10% for 2,5km on the top is a little chapel and a bench, had to bite my teeth to get there, 2 seconds later Daphne arrived, well I'll be .... that girl she never cease to amaze me. Other villages like Scheulder, Gulpen, Mechelen and Vijlen very beautiful but also very up and down, one place was to steep 16% ,even for me , that's a flippin wall man! Anyway last dutch village before the border is Vaals very nice old center, stopped here for a break on our way back(see picture). Aachen is like any big city busy, busy. Had a cofee on the square in front of the city hall and back again to Maastricht. Must admitt that arriving in Mopertingen felt good. Distance done was 100,66km and with all that climbing we where tired but satisfied, gps performed perfect. Next training The ARDENNES!!
