But because of the current schooling system we are only I school half time so we have not been able to do as much as we had hoped to do. For example, we did most of our testing of the sensors at home. We had to get quiet creative but in the end it worked out all fine.

We have all finished programming our second sensor and have done all of our tests with these individually. That means that we are now moving on to the next part of our project: the measuring of the air quality.

We are building a box that will house all of our sensors and Arduino’s together. The box was designed by Martijn and Loïc. They had to think about a lot of details making the box as every sensor had its own needs. The design is done and is going to be cut out by the laser cutter. Then we will do tests with the box. For example we are going to measure the air quality in a forest and then compare it to the city’s air in the next few weeks.

Blogpost Green Wave (week 4 januari )

Onze sensoren zijn allemaal geoptimaliseerd en ze werken. We hadden een probleem met het eerste ontwerp van onze box. De muren in de hoek waren te groot waardoor we het niet in elkaar konden zetten. Lina heeft nu een nieuw ontwerp gedaan en doorgestuurd.

Lina en Jeanne:

°Onze sensoren werken met SD-kaart en met RTC.

°De proefjes zijn gedaan en de verslagen geüpload.

° We gaan de volgende weken de box in elkaar zetten.

°Lina heeft een ander ontwerp gedaan voor de box omdat de vorige een beetje minder was.

*Jeanne heeft de word document ingevuld met de screenshots.

Arne en Tibo:

° Hun sensoren zijn samengevoegd en werken.

° Volgende week gaan ze beginnen solderen.

Victor en Diego:

° Hun twee sensoren zijn samengevoegd en hun RTC is er ook bij gezet.

°Vrijdag gaat Victor met de box meten.

We needed to make a box to put all the sensors in it. Then we brainstormed and came up with an idea. Nina and Helder made the design on the computer so we can cut it out with the laser cutter. We tried to make a design with enough airflow but also something waterproof.

Blogpost Green Wave 

We hebben vorige week een extra week vakantie gehad vanwege de huidige corona situatie. Dit was voor iedereen van ons groepje een leuk rustmoment. Nu hebben we om de andere dag afstandsonderwijs. Dit is hoe ver dat we nu zijn :

Victor en Diego :

-          Diego is klaar met het ontwerpen van onze box en heeft er een uitleg bij geschreven. ( Zie map “ontwerp box” in Teams)

-          Ze zijn klaar met het samenvoegen van hun twee sensoren maar moeten er nog de RTC bijvoegen.

-          Ze moeten nog maar een proefje maken en daar een verslag van maken.

Jeanne en Lina :

-          Ze hebben hun twee sensoren kunnen samenvoegen met RTC en SD kaart.

-         Lina had de schakeling mee naar huis genomen om de proefjes te maken tijdens de vakantie maar ze ondervond problemen met het openen van de arduinocode. ( Jeanne kon de code zelf ook niet openen thuis).

Arne en Tibo :

       -     Ze ondervinden problemen met het samenvoegen van hun twee sensoren.

       -     Hun proefjes van fijn stof en van UV-licht zijn al in orde.

Our group also brainstormed about what we are going to do with our sensors, because we need to make a box for all the sensors and therefor we sat together and we came up with an idea for a design of the box, Nina and Helder are going to design the box.

Important for this box is that it satisfies all of the conditions of all sensors, such as: the ability to detect UV light, ventilation, waterproof, …  Ventilation is probably the most important one because there are 3 sensors who sense the air quality (CO2, humidity, fine dust).

Thanks to our lovely Belgian climate the chance that our box is going to get wet when we put is outside is quite reasonable, so therefor our box need to be 100% waterproof.

In the past weeks our group has been working mostly on our sensors, now that we need to optimize our 2^nd sensor it is only logical that our full attention is reserved therefor.

The groups that had to do the tests with their sensor did those and they continued also on their 2^nd sensor afterwards.

Niamh is the mother of the group and makes sure everyone gets their stuff done on time. Renée is the funny one and is always laughing. Then we have Loïc who is always working hard. Milan is the quiet one, but has been sick for a few stem lessons, so hasn’t got to do that much yet. Next, we have Martijn, he is very smart and his dry sense of humor always crackes everyone up. Lastly, we have Manon. She is the creative one and is also the one who came up with and drew our logo.

We made an introduction video in which you guys will get to know us better. Now that you know who’s in the team, lets talk about what we have been doing.

We all have finished programming our first sensors and are starting our second ones.

Here is the DHT22, this sensor measures the temperature and the humidity and was programmed by Renée and Niamh. We did some experiments with it too, such as putting it in the fridge for an hour and in a box with warm water. Because of these, we now know more about our sensor.

Loïc and Marijn programmed the DS18B20 sensor. They also did some experiments like putting it in the fridge for an hour and had to put it in boiling water.

And finally, Manon and Milan did the UVM30A sensor. They had some touble with this one, but ended up figuring it out.

Hi, we are the Belgian Blue team, also known as the Air Dragons. We chose this name because the project is all about clean air and dragons are cool and fly in the air. Our slogan is: “We care about clean air”, I guess this speaks for itself. In our group there are 3 boys and 3 girls.

A photo of Glen’s screen while he was working on our introduction video.

Because this is an international project and we work together with people in Finland, we had to make an introduction video where we introduced ourselves, our team, our school, Leuven and Belgium. So what we did was selecting the interesting information about these topics and then making a little video about it or just recording a text and adding matching pictures. When we were finished we sent those video’s/audio excerpts with pictures to Glen who then put all of the videos together and added sound + pictures to make it a smooth end product.

Another thing which we had to work on was making a team logo and coming up with a name, Nina did most of this. She made the logo and came up with the name luchtBEL.

Because this is a science project, there are some overlaps with other science subjects. For example, we had to pick leaves in different areas which we later did some experiments with like growing pink leaf yeasts. The point of this experiment is finding out what kind of environment is the best for organisms.
