That your clothes wear out slower when you turn them inside out before putting them in the washing machine

That if you place a capped bottle filled with sand or pebbles in your toilet's water tank, it will use less water when flushing?

That meat is cheaper by the end of the day?

    Weegbree

Searching for some veggies? Hold on a minute.
A lot of the weeds that grow in the garden are perfectly edible. One example is the 'Weegbree' (look for translation plz, cba ;) )
This little plant grows everywhere in our vicinity, and can be used as a replacement to lettuce and or spinache.
It's also possible to eat it raw and it contains lots of vitamins.
Next to that it lessens the irritation caused by nettles.

Zoekt u nog wat groentjes te kopen? Wacht daar eventjes mee!

This is something we all produce and which costs more than we care to think about.
Here are a few simple guidelines through which you can save money through garbage disposal :

    - Press cans and other objects to it's minimal compact size - that way you can add more garbage AND pay less to have it picked up.
    - Leftovers from meals are great to give to chickens, for example. Dogs & Cats like to feast on it as well, but be careful when eating chicken for example. The smaller bones may stick in their throats and may cause serious wounds
    - If you're really bright and have the resources, you could try to get some energy from it (biomass energy)
    - Start a compost heap. I will probably handle this in a later blog item.
    - Befriend someone with a pickup truck or a trailer. Perhaps he'd be willing to dispose of your large quantities or large volumes of garbage.
    - Go to the local container park. Play with the household rules so to speak. If you're only allowed to visit once a day, make sure someone else is driving the second time around. Or even better, use another car if possible.
    - For those urgent cases (body parts etc,...) you could place a bag with waste outside and write on it '20€/$/£ inside!' , in the right neighbourhood it will soon be gone.

Autumn. To me this is the time of the year where I try to get the most out of the shorter growing days, and the gradually declining temperatures.
It's my time to do some 'autumn cleaning', as opposed to spring cleaning. The plants in the yards go into their resting state, it's time to give your car a washing up before the cold arrives.

One thing I've bought this summer is a leaf blower. We have some trees surrounding our garden en also some in it. All the leaves fall into our garden.
I'm particularly fond of this leaf blower though, because of the fact that it cuts the leaves into very small parts, which I can in turn use to make compost out of. This compost I will use next spring. A true 'circle of life' so to speak.
It's certainly a lot cheaper than buying all kinds of chemical nutrients for the structure of the soil, and probably a lot healthier as well.

Yesterday Katia & me prepared our first escargots of the year.
Yes, I'm breeding them myself.  For now we only have about 100 adults and a few hundred smaller ones, but I hope to increase that number dramatically. Next year we should be able to have friends taste them as well. They were delicious

Phew, another hour of work on the henhouse. A luxury, when you have two toddlers up and about.
It's starting to take form. I've added some small windows on the sides to get to the eggs, I've placed a 'roof' on top of the house, and i've placed a gutter so the water can seep away.
This will all be finished with usage of plastic materials etc, and then it's time to get some chickens!
Now it's only the question whether I'll be buying some young chickens who were born this year, or wait for baby chickens beginning of next year... Choices, choices...

A lot of the goods you buy are cheaper when you buy it in large quantities.
For example. A small sacket of 150~ grams of seeds or such would cost me about a euro. Perhaps a bit more even.
I bought 5 KILOS of seeds of a 'forgotten vegetable', which is called Eeuwig Moes in dutch. It's a vegetable that can live up to 40 years and regrows itself after it's cut.

    Here's to hoping it's delicious ;-)

Next to the eggs that occasionally leave the premises, I also grow a lot of plant varieties.
This can include Pachysandra Terminalis , a ground covering plant. Or the exquisite Pineberry for example.
For the time being people can come at our place and collect these fruits of our work for a very cheap price.
In the foreseeable future I plan on sending plants, seeds, roots etc through mail or through a delivery service, if the interest is big enough.

I will occasionally add some more news about the garden in future blogs.

    Dear readers,

We've been living in the Netherlands for about 8 months now, and we're keeping chickens.
    6 to be precise.
Although they lay eggs on a regular basis, it just isn't enough to meet our demands. We have friends, family and neighbours who also love our freshly laid eggs. That's why I decided to add another henhouse. After browsing through multiple suppliers I thought to myself hmmm... It's not the cheapest thing around that can be purchased!
So what did I do? I began to think about the possibility to build one myself.
For the next two weeks I drove around and collected excess wood and pallets that companies, people like you and me, were about to throw away.
I collected Europallets (!), bogus pallets & MDF planks.

Then I decided to actually start making one, of which I am in the process of doing. After about 1,5 hours of work it kinda looks like this.

Notice that it's a work in progress. It will be able to house approx. 16-20 chickens I believe.
