Coalition forces launch attack on Libyan targets
British and American ships and submarines have fired more than 110 cruise missiles at over 20 targets in Libya, targetting air defence systems and fuel depots near Tripoli.
British aircraft have also entered Libyan airspace in what has been baptised Operation Odyessy Dawn. Earlier in the day the French said one of their planes had knocked out four tanks near Benghazi.
Thousands of Libyans have formed a “human shield” around Colonel Gaddafi’s compound in the capital to protect it from air attack.

The French carried out wide ranging aerial reconnaissance missions across Libya all afternoon ahead of the evening bombardment. They also patrolled the skies above Benghazi in an attempt to halt operations by Gaddafi loyalists. The city was under heavy bombardment all day.
Coalition navies, including Canadian vessels, are now in position to blockade Libya, enforcing a ban on arms sales to the Libyan government.
Bahrain’s crown prince orders military off streets
Bahrain’s crown prince has ordered all military from the streets in an effort to end violent unrest which has killed at least six people. The latest move comes after the Shi’ite opposition rejected calls for dialogue until troops were withdrawn.
Yesterday, an anti-government demonstration ended in panic when security forces opened fire on demonstrators in the capital Manama. More than 60 people are reported to have been injured in the clashes, many suffering gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. President Barack Obama condemned the violence and urged restraint.
A young woman spoke to euronews from a hospital where the wounded were being treated: “We are in Salmaniyah hospital. We’re away from the place where the clashes are happening. But we can hear the clashes, the explosions. A witness just came from there and said the ground was red. The ground is red, painted with blood,” she said.
Friday’s fresh violence came on the same day funerals were held for the four people killed when police broke up a protest camp on Thursday.
Afterwards, about 1000 angry protesters gathered outside the hospital.
Along with the dead, hundreds have been wounded in the violent unrest in the tiny gulf island kingdom.
Obama launches attack on US deficit
Halving the US deficit by 2013. That is the aim set out in the president’s new budget plan as Republicans prepare for an all-out fight in Congress.
Through a series of spending cuts and tax increases Barack Obama and his Democrats want to shave off $1.1 trillion dollars over the next ten years.
While he said annual domestic spending will be frozen, critics complained he had been vague on how to cover major outlays such as the Medicare programme.
“While it’s absolutely essential to live within our means, while we are absolutely committed to working with Democrats and Republicans to find further savings and to look at the whole range of budget issues, we can’t sacrifice our future in the process,” said President Barack Obama.
Obama used a visit to a Baltimore school to present the budget using the venue to stress investment in areas such as education and broadband internet would continue.
But the Republicans who have already unveiled much tougher proposals to reign in the rising US debt, plan to resist and say this tax-and-spend president has not gone far enough.
Journalists shown rubble in Gaddafi’s compound
TV crews have been taken into Colonel Gaddafi’s heavily fortified compound in Tripoli and shown the remains of a building said to have been destroyed in a missile attack.
Rubble and weapons casings were scattered around but there were no other signs of last night’s apparent attack.
A short walk away is the brightly-lit tent where Gaddafi receives his guests.

A government spokesman said the attacks came from what he called the “aggressive and barbaric forces targeting the Muslim Arab people of Libya.” He said the Western powers promised not to target civilians or Gaddafi himself and this proves they are lying.
Crowds of Gaddafi loyalists are camping out in the grounds of the sprawling compound, a human shield against air strikes. They gathered outside a building ruined in the 1986 US bombing of Tripoli – a symbolic site of anti-Western defiance for Gaddafi supporters.

In India, a 91-year-old dare-devil has proved that age is no obstacle, by crossing a 300 metre deep ravine on a high-wire in the western state of Maharashtra.
Narajan Krishna Mahajan said he believes that if your attitude is strong, your body will also be strong.
He said he did it to boost the morale of young people, and that he does not consider himself old.
Berlusconi’s party takes poll dive
Despite the hundreds of thousands of women who marched all over Italy calling for him to quit, Silvio Berlusconi again refused to budge today, again insisting it is all just a left wing plot to slander him, as the opposition cannot beat him in elections.
However his former ally and co-founder of his party, Gianfranco Fini, has now formed a party of his own, ‘Future & Liberty’. He insists Berlusconi faces a revolt within his ‘People of Freedom’ party, and that criticism of the leader is now not confined to just the usual suspects on the left. He wants his immediate resignation and fresh elections.
At the party’s launch Fini’s attacks were his most outspoken yet, and they have been picked up in today’s papers.
In the latest opinion poll Berlusconi’s party has slumped to just 27.2 percent support, and tomorrow a court in Milan should rule on whether or not to indict Berlusconi on charges of paying for sex with a minor, and lying to police to obtain her release from custody.
How Libya unrest impacts the global economy
The aftershocks from the unrest in Libya are also being felt across global financial markets.
Libya is the world’s 12th largest exporter of crude and the price per barrel has shot to a two-and-a-half year high amid investor fear that production could be disrupted.
It follows a speech by one of Colonel Gaddafi’s sons, Saif, who warned that all foreign oil companies might have to leave the country.
Rising oil prices can accelerate inflation and eat into companies’ profits, further unsettling an already rocky global economy.
The US lifted sanctions on Libya when Gaddafi compensated the families of victims of the Lockerbie bombing.
With free trade now a possibility, foreign energy companies lined up to do business with a man once considered as a pariah on the international stage.
The OPEC member is Africa’s fourth largest oil producer after Nigeria, Algeria and Angola. It produces up to 1.8 million barrels per day and holds estimated reserves of 42 billion barrels
Eighty percent of its crude exports are sold to European countries such as France, Germany and particularly Italy.
Libya has deep economic ties with Italy, its former colonial master. The two nations signed a friendship treaty in 2008 and Italy is now the biggest foreign investor in the North Africa country.
Libyan investors have used oil wealth to buy large stakes in a number of Italian companies including oil giant ENI, carmaker Fiat and even a 7.5 percent share of Juventus football club. Tripoli’s investments in Italy are worth some 3.6 billion euros.
While Libya has some of the highest living standards in Africa, some estimates indicate one third of its people live below the poverty line.
The question now is what happens if the violence escalates in Libya? It would come just as many Western economies are emerging from the global economic downturn.
Chinese police clampdown on anti-government protests
Despite their efforts to block information spreading about the Arab uprisings, anti-government protests have erupted in several cities. But an emphatic show of force by police in Shanghai quickly ended the protest.
It was a similar story in downtown Beijing where lines of police checked passers-by and warned away demonstrators.
A rash of detentions and censorship of online discussions have shown that the Communist Party is concerned about any challenge to its rule.
Residents in Hong Kong, however, enjoy a little more freedom. Some inspired by the so-called Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia took to the streets. Police soon ended the demonstration.
A call for protests a week ago brought out few people. But dozens of dissidents and human rights activists have reportedly been detained or warned to avoid any action which risks social stability.
Iranian MPs want opposition figures to be hanged
Iranian MPs have called for two leading opposition figures to be executed following mass protests yesterday.
Conservative members of Iran’s parliament said Mirhoussein Mousavi and Karroubi should be executed, accusing them of “creating public disorder.”
Iran’s opposition took to the streets yesterday to call for democratic reforms in the Islamic Republic.
The protesters clashed with security forces, leaving two people dead and several dozen injured.
One of the dead has been named as 26-year-old arts student, Sanee Jaleh.
The second victim has been named as Mohammad Mokhtari.
Army defectors join revolt and seize Benghazi
Libya’s second city, Benghazi, is reportedly under control of an army unit that has defected.
According to some residents the troops seized the city after overpowering members of Libya’s elite Praetorian Guard.
With many communication lines scrambled, the report is impossible to verify. But several people have posted information on social networks, video sharing websites or contacted Western news agencies by telephone.
Habib al-Obaidi, a doctor at the city’s main hospital claimed the bodies of 50 people had been brought in today alone. Most, he said, had died from bullet wounds.
Sunday’s bloodshed follows the deaths of scores of
protesters on Saturday in one of the most violent days since protests began sweeping through the Arab world two months ago.

Wild streets of Tripoli
Although Colonel Gaddafi is reported to be in control of most of the Libyan capital Tripoli, anti-government protesters appear to be still very much in evidence in some suburbs of the city.
The latest amateur video, thought to have been filmed on Friday, shows what appear to be anti-Gaddafi demonstrators coming under heavy fire.
People are using mobile phones or small digital cameras, making it difficult to verify exactly what is happening. Some of the video footage obtained is from social networking sites on the internet.
Tripoli is home to two million of LibyaÂ’s six and a half million population, making control of the city central to control of the country itself.
The UN estimates more than 1,000 people have died in the uprising so far but Colonel GaddafiÂ’s son, Saif al-Islam, says the number of deaths has been exaggerated, although he also confirms that the Libyan air force has bombed four ammunition depots.

Vervolgens klikt u op de knop 'Verwijderen' die achter dit bericht staat (achter de titel 'Proficiat!'). Nog even bevestigen dat u dit bericht wenst te verwijderen en het bericht is verwijderd. U kan dit op dezelfde manier in de toekomst berichten wijzigen of verwijderen.

WAT IS CONCREET DE BEDOELING??
De bedoeling is dat u op regelmatige basis een bericht toevoegt op uw blog. U kan hierin zetten wat u zelf wenst.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u heeft een blog gemaakt voor gedichten. Dan kan u bvb. elke dag een gedicht toevoegen op uw blog. U geeft de titel in van het gedicht en daaronder in het bericht het gedicht zelf. Zo kunnen uw bezoekers dagelijks terugkomen om uw laatste nieuw gedicht te lezen. Indien u meerdere gedichten wenst toe te voegen op eenzelfde dag, voegt u deze toe als afzonderlijke berichten, dus niet in één bericht.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken over de actualiteit. Dan kan u bvb. dagelijks een bericht plaatsen met uw mening over iets uit de actualiteit. Bvb. over een bepaalde ramp, ongeval, uitspraak, voorval,... U geeft bvb. in de titel het onderwerp waarover u het gaat hebben en in het bericht plaatst u uw mening over dat onderwerp. Zo kan u bvb. meedelen dat de media voor de zoveelste keer het fout heeft, of waarom ze nu dat weer in de actualiteit brengen,... Of u kan ook meer diepgaande artikels plaatsen en meer informatie over een bepaald onderwerp opzoeken en dit op uw blog plaatsen. Indien u over meerdere zaken iets wil zeggen op die dag, plaatst u deze als afzonderlijke berichten, zo is dit het meest duidelijk voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken als dagboek. Dagelijks maakt u een bericht aan met wat u er wenst in te plaatsen, zoals u anders in een dagboek zou plaatsen. Dit kan zijn over wat u vandaag hebt gedaan, wat u vandaag heeft gehoord, wat u van plan bent, enz. Maak een titel en typ het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks naar uw blog komen om uw laatste nieuwe bericht te lezen en mee uw dagboek te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met plaatselijk nieuws. Met uw eigen blog kan u zo zelfs journalist zijn. U kan op uw blog het plaatselijk nieuws vertellen. Telkens u iets nieuw hebt, plaats u een bericht: u geeft een titel op en typt wat u weet over het nieuws. Dit kan zijn over een feest in de buurt, een verkeersongeval in de streek, een nieuwe baan die men gaat aanleggen, een nieuwe regeling, verkiezingen, een staking, een nieuwe winkel, enz. Afhankelijk van het nieuws plaatst u iedere keer een nieuw bericht. Indien u veel nieuws heeft, kan u zo dagelijks vele berichten plaatsen met wat u te weten bent gekomen over uw regio. Zorg ervoor dat u telkens een nieuw bericht ingeeft per onderwerp, en niet zaken samen plaatst. Indien u wat minder nieuws kan bijeen sprokkelen is uiteraard 1 bericht per dag of 2 berichten per week ook goed. Probeer op een regelmatige basis een berichtje te plaatsen, zo komen uw bezoekers telkens terug.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken met een reisverslag. U kan een bericht aanmaken per dag van uw reis. Zo kan u in de titel opgeven over welke dag u het gaat hebben, en in het bericht plaatst u dan het verslag van die dag. Zo komen alle berichten onder elkaar te staan, netjes gescheiden per dag. U kan dus op éénzelfde dag meerdere berichten ingeven van uw reisverslag.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken met tips op. Dan maakt u telkens u een tip heeft een nieuw bericht aan. In de titel zet u waarover uw tip zal gaan. In het bericht geeft u dan de hele tip in. Probeer zo op regelmatige basis nieuwe tips toe te voegen, zodat bezoekers telkens terug komen naar uw blog. Probeer bvb. 1 keer per dag, of 2 keer per week een nieuwe tip zo toe te voegen. Indien u heel enthousiast bent, kan u natuurlijk ook meerdere tips op een dag ingeven. Let er dan op dat het meest duidelijk is indien u pér tip een nieuw bericht aanmaakt. Zo kan u dus bvb. wel 20 berichten aanmaken op een dag indien u 20 tips heeft voor uw bezoekers.
- Bijvoorbeeld:
u wil een blog maken dat uw activiteiten weerspiegelt. U bent bvb. actief in een bedrijf, vereniging of organisatie en maakt elke dag wel eens iets mee. Dan kan je al deze belevenissen op uw blog plaatsen. Het komt dan neer op een soort van dagboek. Dan kan u dagelijks, of eventueel meerdere keren per dag, een bericht plaatsen op uw blog om uw belevenissen te vertellen. Geef een titel op dat zeer kort uw belevenis beschrijft en typ daarna alles in wat u maar wenst in het bericht. Zo kunnen bezoekers dagelijks of meermaals per dag terugkomen naar uw blog om uw laatste belevenissen te lezen.
- Bijvoorbeeld: u wil een blog maken uw hobby. U kan dan op regelmatige basis, bvb. dagelijks, een bericht toevoegen op uw blog over uw hobby. Dit kan gaan dat u vandaag een nieuwe postzegel bij uw verzameling heeft, een nieuwe bierkaart, een grote vis heeft gevangen, enz. Vertel erover en misschien kan je er zelfs een foto bij plaatsen. Zo kunnen anderen die ook dezelfde hobby hebben dagelijks mee lezen. Als u bvb. zeer actief bent in uw hobby, kan u dagelijks uiteraard meerdere berichtjes plaatsen, met bvb. de laatste nieuwtjes. Zo trek je veel bezoekers aan.
WAT ZIJN DIE "REACTIES"?
Een bezoeker kan op een bericht van u een reactie plaatsen. Een bezoeker kan dus zelf géén bericht plaatsen op uw blog zelf, wel een reactie. Het verschil is dat de reactie niet komt op de beginpagina, maar enkel bij een bericht hoort. Het is dus zo dat een reactie enkel gaat over een reactie bij een bericht. Indien u bvb. een gedicht heeft geschreven, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze het heel mooi vond. Of bvb. indien u plaatselijk nieuws brengt, kan een reactie van een bezoeker zijn dat deze nog iets meer over de feiten weet (bvb. exacte uur van het ongeval, het juiste locatie van het evenement,...). Of bvb. indien uw blog een dagboek is, kan men reageren op het bericht van die dag, zo kan men meeleven met u, u een vraag stellen, enz. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
WAT IS DE "WAARDERING"?
Een bezoeker kan een bepaald bericht een waardering geven. Dit is om aan te geven of men dit bericht goed vindt of niet. Het kan bvb. gaan over een bericht, hoe goed men dat vond. Het kan ook gaan over een ander bericht, bvb. een tip, die men wel of niet bruikbaar vond. Deze functie kan u uitschakelen via "Instellingen" indien u dit niet graag heeft.
