Het nieuwe
semester is begonnen!
We moesten even
Cantonese hotpot. Zhou 粥 kom je in Guangzhou
Wumizhou is

The new
semester has started! My schedule isnt completely fixed yet, but I do can
already tell you that among others Ill follow Cantonese, Marketing and
Consumer Behavior. Our schedule has changed again today because it (just as in
the beginning of last semester) wasnt structured well. For example: yesterday
we didnt have two, but three hours of Consumer Behavior, and today suddenly we
were finding ourselves in the class Principles of Marxism it didnt take us
very long to get out of that class again . After a few calls we eventually
found the the right classroom. So far, I like most of our teachers. The one
from Consumer Behavior is quite critical, also concerning our university (she criticized
the humanities in our school by comparing them with the nearby Zhongshan
University). Just like the teacher of Marketing she involves the students quite
a lot in class and uses practical examples, such as a Chinese student in our
class with an eye-catching haircut that he had chosen to be different from the
others.
What is
curious is that, although Chinese students arent used to speaking in class
(most courses dont require lots of interaction and are quite theoretical), still
they arent very timid when they are asked a question by the professor. They
stand up and look straight ahead of them while answering the question, but most
of the time talk very confident and even dare to crack a joke. Also, even
though mostly in class theres a buzz of voices and not a lot of interest
(although that depends of the teacher), still a lot of hands are raised
whenever the professor puts a question quite a big difference with those big
auditories in Belgium where in this case everyone acts as if he or she is still
extremely busy taking notes . Also
this semester attendances are noted down, and one of my professors had even
written on his PPT (in big red letters) that Who skips his class once without
preceding notice will lose 10% of his total score. Serious treatments for
sure. By the way, how come Chinese are so obsessed by PPTs? It seems as if a
class or assignment that doesnt come with a PowerPoint presentation is considered
worthless. My opinion is that certain lessons are taught better without PPT,
such as Business Chinese.
At this
moment the weather is quite unstable, humid and misty. Im not a fan of this
kind of weather, since it comes with a lot of inconveniences. For example, its
hard to dry your clothes. Moreover, the floors are completely wet, which causes
danger of skidding. Not only the bicycle garage (this morning I thought they
had cleaned over there, but that turned out to not be the case), but also in
the classrooms the floors are wet. Thank God this time theres no accompanying
fungus, but what isnt there yet can still come of course .
Apart from
these things nothing much has changed over here. It feels good to see my everyone
again, and Im often going out for food with my friends, I had my nails done, Im
visiting Vivi
Yesterday I went to the Nanyue Mausoleum: over there you cant
only admire the treasures out of the grave of the second Nanyue-king Zhao Mo,
but you can even enter the crypt! I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
That guy wasnt only buried with an incredible amount of treasures, but also
together with 15 people of course he needed some company. At the moment I visited the crypt, there were restauration works going on. The workmen didn't do any effort to preserve the serene atmosphere in the tomb. Every two minutes there was equipment falling down, the workmen were constantly yelling to each other... Thusfar the final resting place of the King of Nanyue.
In the evening I
went to eat wumizhou 毋米粥 with friends.
Wumizhou is some kind of Cantonese hotpot. Zhou 粥 is something
you can find anywhere in Guangzhou. Its similar to our Belgian rice porridge,
but more thin and without taste. Wumizhou is the same thing, but without rice
. This
gruel is used to prepare fish, meat and vegetables. In the end you can still
add some rice to fill up possible holes in your stomach, but in our case that
wasnt necessary . Bijlagen: http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&newwindow=1&sa=N&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbnid=rDIyQVAiZb6q7M:&imgrefurl=http://www.uukt.com.tw/phpbb/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D37685%26sid%3D393aae10c668996f25442302d7f3db2c&docid=S7fXknD-mtZ3DM&imgurl=http://img516.im
