Op Boracay island, Philippines // On Boracay island, Filippijnen
De Filippijnen komt veel in het nieuws, en waar zijn we, in de Filippijnen natuurlijk !!
Deze week is er een massagraf gevonden in het zuiden van het land. Het motief van de daders is politiek, er zijn verkiezingen volgend jaar, en hun moorden zijn gruwelijk. Het is een verzet tegen huidige machtsverhoudingen - en als ik het goed gelezen heb in de krant - hebben ze de vrouwen eerst misbruikt en dan vermoord. Enkele slachtoffers zijn dochters van de vice burgemeerster van een stad in Mindanao. Gruwelijk is het !!
Beatriz en ik zijn in Boracay eiland. Boracay ligt in het midden van de Filippijnen, en het staat zo dwars tegenover de politieke instabiliteit van Mindanao, in het zuiden. We zijn hier veilig en ver van het politiek gevaar. Ik volg eerder het weerbericht, en dat ziet er voor de volgende 5 dagen - het maximum aantal dagen van een weersvoorspelling - probleemloos uit. Het regende gisteren en vandaag is het bewolkt, maar geen stormen!! Hopelijk krijgen we nog zon op het paradijs van Boracay.
The Philippines has been a lot in the headlines recently, and where are we, in the Philippines !!
This week a massgrave is found in the south of the country. The motive of the killers is political, there is election fever in the Philippines, and their murders are absolutely horrible. They are a resistance against the current powers - and if I read it well in the paper - they abused the female victims and then murdered them. Some victims are daughters of the vice mayor of a city in Mindanao. Horrible it is !!
Beatriz and me are in Boracay island. Boracay is in the middle of the Philippines, en it is the absolute opposite of the political turmoil of Mindanao, the south let's say. We are safe here and far from the political danger there. I more follow the weatherforecast, and the Philippines look excellent for the next 5 days - 5 days is the maximum of forecasting otherwise I would do more. It rained yesterday, and today it is cloudy, but no storms!! Hopefully we see some sun on our paradise that is Boracay.

In Puerto Galera, the city of galleons and the beach of ladyboys // ..., de stad van de galjoenen en het strand van de ladyboys
Puerto Galera is founded by the Spanish in the 16th century. They used to keep their ships safe in 'the city of the galleons' for typhoons and any other bad weathers. It is a 2 hour bus-trip, and a 2 hour boat trip, to get here from Manila, and we are on a beach that is only 1km long. Around the beach it is cliffs and mountains.
In my last blog from Manila I said that this country is so very different from any other country I have seen before. Well, on this beach it is no less. I have actually never seen a place like this before! We thought it was a quiet beach, but in the evening the place transforms into a fantastically entertaining ladyboy playground. It is unbelievable and hard to explain. They are our waitresses, cooks, salespeople on the beach for diving and snorkeling, and in the evening there organize shows. They are everywhere. The shows are dancing and singing, do impressions on Mariah Carey, do poledancing (they are stronger than me !!), wear their cocktaildresses, and very dramatic.
We are traveling together with Thin and Jonty that we met in Vietnam, and enjoy the Philippines a lot. We stay until Monday morning, and then go more south in the Philippines.
Puerto Galera heeft een Spaanse geschiedenis, opgericht in de 16de eeuw. De Spanjaarden ankerden hun schepen in 'de stad van de galjoenen' tijdens typhonen en ander slecht weer. Het is een 2uren busrit, en een 2uren boottrip, vanuit Manila, en we zijn op een strand dat maar 1km lang is. Rond het strand zijn het rotsen en bergen.
In mijn laatste blog vanuit Manila zei ik dat het land heel verschillend is tot de andere landen die ik gezien heb. Ook op dit eiland is het zo. Ik heb eigenlijk nog nooit zoiets gezien als op dit strand. We dachten dat het een rustige strand was, maar in de avond verandert de plaats in een fantastische speelplaats voor ladyboys. Het is ongelofelijk en ik heb er geen woorden voor. Ze zijn onze garcons, koks, de verkopers op het strand voor duiken en snorkelen, en in de avond organizeren ze shows. Ze zijn overal. In de shows dansen en zingen ze, ze playbacken Mariah Carey, ze paaldansen (ze zijn sterker dan ik!!), ze verkleden zich in cocktailjurk, en zijn heel dramatisch.
We reizen samen met Thin en Jonty die we leren kennen hebben in Vietnam, en genieten op dit moment van het mooi weer. We blijven tot maandagmorgen, en gaan meer zuid in de Filipijnen.
In Bangkok, wednesday night we fly to Manila. // Woensdag avond vliegen we naar Manila.
Donderdagmorgen. Dit land is zo verschillend van wat ik al gezien heb.
We arrivereerden deze morgen in de Filipijnen. De Filipijnen vervangen de thai bhat door filippijnse pesos, boeddha tempels door kerken, taxis door jeepneys. Dat is wat we tot zover gezien hebben. Bekijk deze foto van een filippijnse jeepney. Geweldige karren zijn het! De Filipijnen is een prachtig land.

Thailand !!!
In 14 days of Thailand, Beatriz and me have been in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ayuthaya. Miles ahead of the others, Bangkok is the place we like the most. It is where the action
is, nowhere near Phnom Penh (Cambodia) or Ho Chi Minh's (Vietnam)
action, but these place are incomparable with Bangkok.
Chiang Mai, in the north of Thailand, is popular for trekking. However, it is very similar to the South of
China or the north of Laos. We didn't bother and relaxed (for as much that is not the case when you are traveling), went to the
dentist, and saw many temples. There are a lot of temples or 'wats' in Chiang Mai. Before going back to Bangkok, we
made a stop in Ayuthaya, not for long because it is very small. We were
very happy to be back in Bangkok.
Tomorrow we arrive in the Philippines. We can stay there for 21 days on
a free visa. After one night in Manila we go south to Puerta Galera.
And at some stage in the Philippines, I will get my PADI and be with
the fishes!

Thailand !!!
In 14 dagen Thailand hebben Beatriz en ik Bangkok gezien, Chiang Mai en Ayuthaya. Met meters voorsprong is Bangkok onze favoriet. Het is de waar de actie is, veel meer actie dan in Phnom Penh (Cambodja) of Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam). Die plaatsen hebben een andere charme.
Chiang Mai, in het noorden van Thailand, is populair voor trektochten. Het ligt in de jungle, net zoals Zuid-China en Noord-Laos in de jungle ligt, dus trektochten hebben we niet gedaan. We hebben het kalmptjes aan gedaan (voor zover het niet kalm is op reis), naar de tandarts geweest, en de tempels van Chiang Mai gezien. Er zijn er alleszins genoeg. Voor terug te gaan naar Bangkok, stopten we in Ayuthaya. Niet voor lang want Ayuthaya is klein. We waren blij om terug in Bangkok te zijn.
Morgen arriveren we in de Filippijnen. We kunnen blijven op een gratis visa van 21 dagen. Na 1 nacht in Manila gaan we richting de Visayas, startend met Puerta Galera. Op een gegeven moment in de Filippijnen, zal het tijd zijn om mijn PADI te halen en mijn schubben uit te testen.

Over Thailand heb ik nog weinig geschreven, ik wacht tot ik terugben in Bangkok. Ik moet daar eerst een nachtje mijn ogen uitkijken. Je bent het mss niet eens maar, de eilanden niet meegeteld, moet Bangkok het beste zijn van Thailand.
PS: Het weerbericht van de Filipijnen voorspelt nog geen zorgwekkend weer. Het zuiden van Groot Brittanie ziet er slechter uit.

I haven't written much about Thailand yet, but that's because I ll wait until Bangkok. I have to be out there again and see the craziness. You most likely don't agree with me, but without the Thai beaches, Bangkok must be the best of Thailand.
PS: The weatherforecast of the Philipines is still good. The south of Britain is off worse.

The picture is taken on Khao San road in the Banglamphu area. Centre of touristy Bangkok it is. Anything that you are after you find there. I found the same T-shirt (Positive Intellectual Motivated Person + Jimi Hendrix' head) like I got stolen in the laundry 6 months ago. We are going back to Bangkok in a week or so and I don't want to miss out on Bangkok by night.
De foto is genomen op Kha San straat in Banglamphu. Center center van Bangkok kun je het noemen. Je vindt er alles wat je ooit wel gewild had. Ik heb er hetzelfde T-shirt gekocht (Positive Intellectual Motivated Person + een Jimi Hendrix hoofd) zoals ik had 6 maanden geleden had, maar verdween in de was. Na Chang Mai gaan we terug naar Bangkok voor langer. Ik kijk er al naar uit want ik vind het een machtige toeristenstad.
In Siem Reap, volle maan festival en veel regen. Angkor zal nat zijn morgen. // Full moon festival is with rain. Angkor will be wet tomorrow !!
De tempels van Angkor zijn fantastisch van begin tot einde. Tuk-tuk besteld, weerbericht gaf droog weer, en om 5 uur zijn we opgepikt door de tuk-tuk voor zonsopgang. Beatriz en ik hebben een volledige dag tempels bezocht en met een persoonlijk record meer dan 250 foto's genomen. Dan heeft de batterij het begeven Moe en verzadigd, vooral het fototoestel dan, en mijn verstuikte enkel van dom te doen in de tempels - ik heb over een 1000-jarige muur geklommen en slecht geland - zijn we uitgecheckt en deze morgen de bus genomen naar Bangkok. 14 dagen gratis visa geeft ons de tijd om enkele stops te maken in het noorden van Thailand. Chang Mai bijvoorbeeld.
We gaan zaterdag direct van Bangkok naar Chang Mai. Op onze terugreis naar Bangkok maken we enkele stops. Op 19 November hebben we dan onze vlucht naar Manila, Filippijnen. Hopelijk zullen alle typhoons van de Filippijnen de revu gepasseerd zijn vooraleer we ons geld in de Filippijnse economie investeren. Onze gedachten zijn bij de Filippijnse bevolking. The temples of Angkor really are a fantastic experience. Tuk-tuk was ordered, weatherforecast gave out dry weather, and at 5 AM we were picked up by a tuk-tuk to catch the sunrise. Beatriz and me spent a full day in the tempels and with a personal record took more than 250 days in one day. Then the battery bailed out on me Tired and enough temples for a long time, for my camera then, leaving Cambodia with a sprained ankle - I landed horribly bad after climbing over a 1000 year old wall - we checked out and took the bus to Bangkok. The 14 days free visa gives us some time to see the North of Thailand. We ll go to Chang Mai for example.
On Saturday we train directly from Bangkok to Chang Mai. On our way back to Bangkok we ll make a few extra stops and then on the 19th of November we have our flight to Manila, Philipines. Hopefully no typhoons anymore by then !! We are really worried about it because the ticket is unrefundable. For what it's worth, we would pump loads of money in their economy. Our thoughts are with the people of the Philipines. Many greetings and enjoy the rest of your day! I ll put some more ice on that ankle.

Sihanoukville is already lasting a week for us. It helped that the weathermen were good to us, only 2 rainy days, and today we have a pumping heat limiting body movement to the absolute minimum. Room, breakie, fruit shake and the same route back Every evening, Bea and me go for BBQ-ed seafood. Absolutely fingerlicking good!! If it were me, I easily stay another week ! We fill our days in Sihanoukville reading books, drinking fruit shakes, go for a swim and haggling with masseuses and salesguys. The beach is overfull of them. The women offer massages, manicures, pedicures, epilations of chesthair! This is scary. They look at you and tell you that that hair has to go off! If you have a good "chesthair day", they change course and go your nails, feet, toes... After the first day I learned my lesson, nails and hair to perfection before the beach, it saved me a few bucks and some peace of mind! There are women with babies begging for a buck, disabled people, girls selling bracelets. In the end we bought two bracelets and a 'real pair of ray bans' for the good cause.
I haven't managed to upload my pics of Vietnam so instead I write a few lines about Cambodia, his news and character, and my experience of the kingdom country. Strongly influenced by hindu style, khmer architecture abundantly landmarks Cambodia in temples, schools and government buildings. The main highlight being the Angkor site in Siem Reap. Since Vietnam we have talked about it; will we visit Angkor in 1 or 3 days; it is huge, do we rent a car and driver for the day, do we rent a tuk-tuk; or maybe a bicycle. Next month is the marathon of Angkor so there are people who run through it. Also the Cambodians visit their Angkor, and they love to talk about Angkor, that's how I first found out about the hospitality of the Cambodians. They might be more friendly than the Vietnamese and more talk-eager than Lao people, however anyone can see that differently depending on the experience one has. After my visit I definitely let you know how Angkor was.
Cambodia suffered a lot in the late seventies with Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge, with their bloody regime, ended more than 2 million lives, and made many Cambodians leave their own country. The Khmer Rouge, to this day, has left its mark on the country. In Phnom Penh I read in the local paper that the local council wanted, and made, a poor area disappear to start a large commercial construction project. A bulldozer has cleaned up what was in the way. This happens all over South-East Asia - locals need to make way for resorts and get other land or get compensated - but what is most disturbing in Cambodia, is that the inhabitants of that block only were informed 2 days before the demolishment of their houses. It's hard to generalise the situation in Cambodia on one example, but it's the one that I read.
Tomorrow we take the bus to Phnom Penh and we leave the beach for what it is. I wish you a long All Saints weekend and definitely talk soon. Klaas
Sihanoukville is dik in orde, daarom dat wij er al meer dan een week zijn. Het heeft 2 dagen geregend maar de andere 5 hebben we goed weer gehad. Vandaag is het weer snikkend heet - en als het aan mij lag bleven we nog een week - maar we moeten verder naar de tempels van Angkor. We verblijven in een bungalowpark en vullen onze dagen met boeken lezen, fruit shakes drinken, een zwemtje doen en onderhandelen met masseuses en verkopers. Het strand is vol er vol van. De vrouwen doen massages, manicures, pedicures, epilaties van borsthaar !! Ze kijken me aan en zeggen dat mijn borsthaar af moet ?!? Als je een goede borsthaar-dag hebt, dan beginnen ze over nagels en tenen. Na de 1ste dag heb ik nagels tot juweeltjes getransformeerd, en dat heeft me een paar dollars en veel woorden gespaard op het strand. Er zijn vrouwen met babies die om geld vragen, invaliden, meisjes met armbandjes. Uiteindelijk hebben we 2 armbandjes en een échte' ray-ban zonnebril gekocht voor 2 dollars. Beatriz en ik hebben ons goed doel gedaan in Sihanoukville.
Het lukt niet om mijn foto's van Vietnam te publiceren, in de plaats wil ik in deze blog over Cambodja schrijven. Over zijn actualiteit, zijn karakter en mijn ervaring van het land. Het is land van khmer tempels, sterk beinvloed door de hindu-stijl, met de bekendste tempel van Angkor. De tempel van Angkor bezoek ik volgende week en het zal zeker een hoogtepunt zijn van Cambodja. Sinds Vietnam is Angkor het gespreksonderwerp met mensen die we tegenkomen. In Vietnam zijn het de toeristen die over Angkor praten; bezoek je Angkor in 1 dag of 3 dagen; de tempel van Angkor zijn veel tempels samen dus huur je een taxi met chauffeur voor 1 dag, of een tuk-tuk of een fiets. Misschien wil je erdoorheen lopen want in december is het de marathon van Angkor! In Cambodja zijn het niet alleen toeristen maar ook de Cambodjanen die graag over Angkor praten. De Cambodjanen zijn heel vriendelijk met toeristen, hebben Angkor zelf ook bezocht, en zijn heel trots op hun Angkor. Dus ze praten er graag over. Na mijn bezoek laat ik weten hoe Angkor is.
Eind de jaren 70 heeft Cambodia veel geleden onder de Khmer Rouge. De Khmer Rouge heeft het einde gemaakt aan 2 miljoen mensen, veel Cambodjanen zijn naar het buitenland gevlucht, en door de Khmer Rouge heeft Cambodja nog altijd een sociale-economische achterstand. In de Phnom Penh Post las ik dat de regering zomaar een arme wijk in Phnom Penh heeft doen verdwijnen voor een commercieel bouwproject. Een bulldozer heeft de puzzel voor hen opgelost. De slachtoffers, de bewoners van de wijk, ontvingen een mededeling 2 dagen voor de bulldozer ingehuurd was. Het is maar een voorbeeld maar het is mijn voorbeeld van de achterstand die Cambodja heeft.
Morgen nemen we de bus terug naar Phnom Penh en is ons strandverhaaltje

Vietnam Photo Album 2 of 2 - from HCM City to Phnom Penh
Vietnam's war played a big part in world history. The Co Chi tunnels gives a good insight in the Vietnam war so Beatriz and me joined a day tour to the Cao Dai temple and the Co Chi tunnels. The Cao Dai temples was too far away from HCMC to be a healthy day tour, we were sooo long on the bus!, but we were able to see the mid-day Cao Dai service. Daily for them, but unique to me.
De Vietnamese oorlog heeft rol gespeeld in de wereld. De Co Chi tunnels geven een goed inzicht in the Vietnamese oorlog, dus zijn Beatriz en ik op dagtoer geweest. Naar de Cao Dai tempel en de Co Chi tunnels. De Cao Dai tempels zijn te ver weg van HCMC voor een dagtoer, we waren zo lang onderweg!, maar we konden de Cao Dai middagdienst meevolgen. Het is dagelijks voor hen, maar uniek voor mij.

A visit to an NGO that produces handicrafts made by handicapped people. Not surprising that most of the workers were not handicapped. They might have been though, but I just don't trust the Vietnamese enough when it is about money.

The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam war. The tunnels were Vietcong's base of operations.

The Mekong Delta was ok, I had a snake around my neck, saw crocs, dropped my glasses in the Mekong but fished it out myself. We made the best of it I would say. And all that water was enough to give me a cold that lasted for a week.

The 16th of October we crossed the border by slow boat and in the evening we arrived in Phnom Penh. In the picture you see the first Khmer temple after the border. Cambodia looks to be very different from Vietnam.
16 Oktober zijn we per boot de grens overgegaan en 's avonds in Phnom Penh aangekomen. In de foto zie je de eerste Khmer tempel na de grenspost. Cambodia ziet er heel anders uit dan Vietnam.

On Mekong Delta tour, Friday morning hop on the boat to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. // Op 3 daagse in de Mekong Delta, vrijdag morgen heb ik de boot naar Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
De Mekong Delta toer viel mee, ik heb een slang in mijn nek gehad, krokodilen gezien, mijn zonnebril in de Mekong laten vallen en er zelf uitgevist. We hebben het wel zelf leuk moeten maken want de toer was een beetje saai. Op. 16 Oktober zijn we per boot de grens overgegaan en 's avonds in Phnom Penh aangekomen.
Vandaag is het 19 Oktober en Beatriz en ik zijn net in Sihanoukville aangekomen. We blijven ongeveer een week voor we teruggaan naar Phnom Penh en Siem Reap of de Angkor tempels.
We hebben tijdens de Mekong Delta toer onze vluchten geboekt naar de Filipijnen. We vliegen eind November van Bangkok naar Manila en blijven in de Filipijnen zolang de gratis visa ons toelaat. Dat is 21 dagen.

Today is the 19th of October and Beatriz and me have just arrived in Sihanoukville and will stay around a week before going to Phnom Penh to organise our trip to Siem Reap - Temples of Angkor.
During the Mekong Delta we booked our flights to the Philippines. We fly out end of November from Bangkok to Manila and stay as long as we can on the free visa, that's 21 days.
In Ho Chi Minh City since Friday night, I call it survival to cross a street. // In HCMC sinds vrijdagavond, de straat oversteken is een overlevingstocht op zijn eigen.
Ho Chi Minh City is really fun because it was since China that I were in a big city. HCMC populates 7 million people, is crowded, has a city atmosphere, and the weather is pleasant. Almost all of the 7 million people must have a motorbike though, imagine the amount of bikes buzzing around your ears!! Important for Beatriz and me is that nightlife - shopping - coffeemachines are easy too find. That made us stay 5 days, having including a visit to the Co Chi tunnels and Cao Dao Temple on a day tour. The Co Chi tunnels were really interesting for how the Vietnamese used them to fight the Americans, the Cao Dai Temple was nice but far away from Ho Chi Minh City. We sorted out our Cambodian visa while we were in HCM, and shopped for some bits and pieces. After 5 days of spending money, we leave for a 3-day tour in the Mekong Delta, ending in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Het doet deugd om in Ho Chi Minh City te zijn! De stad heeft veel te bieden, maar het doet vooral deugd voor mij om nog eens een stad te zien waar je terrasjes kunt doen, shoppen, en deftige koffie kunt drinken. Het is geleden sinds onze China reis dat we een miljoenenstad bezocht hebben. En ondanks 7 miljoen mensen is de stad aangenaam om doorheen te wandelen. Na de werkdag spelen de Vietnamezen badminton in een park, ze volgen danslessen in het park, of liggen in hun hangmat. Eten doen ze ook veel, 4 keren per dag blijkbaar, en de terrassen zitten naar mijn gedacht altijd vol. Als ze niets van het voorgaande doen, dan zijn ze onderwerg naar ergens op hun brommer. En daar zie je er veel van. Mens, een straat oversteken is gelijk met je leven spelen.
We hebben op een dagtrip de Co Chi tunnels en de Cao Dai tempel bezocht. De Co Chi tunnels zijn interessant zodat je kan zien hoe de Vietnamezen de tunnels gebruikt hebben tijdens de oorlog, de Cao Dao was interessant maar te ver van HCMC. Onze Cambodiaanse visa hebben we ook geregeld in HCMC, en we hebben wat geshopt. Na 5 dagen goed uitgeven zijn we vertrokken op een 3 daagse in de Mekong Delta die eindigt in Phnom Penh, Cambodja.
In Nha Trang, the French say it's Nice in Vietnam but I've never been in Nice so couldn't tell you this, we did have a huge Calzone so ahora la vita e bella.
En op de foto zie je hoe blij een Calzone een mens kan maken ! De foto is lage kwaliteit, als je het niet goed ziet, ik zeg heel goed dus

IMG_0951.jpg : Hoi An was zwaar overstroomd maar de productie van op maat gemaakte kledij (waar Hoi An befaamd voor is, vermelding van de merknaam op de kledij is naar keuze) herstartte direct na het water weg was. Op deze foto zie je een gebouw waar ze de productie van handgemaakte stukken hervat hebben. Verder is iemand keukengerei aan het wassen in de rechter benedenhoek, maar je ziet het niet goed op de foto. Je kunt wel op de linkerpilaar zien hoe diep het gebouw in het water gezeten heeft. IMG_0874.jpg : China beach is een uitgestrekt zandstrand tussen Danang en Hoi An. Het wordt volgebouwd met grote resorts maar het is nog niet te laat om er het grote beachboy-toerisme te ontlopen. IMG_0917.jpg : Thin, Johnty en Beatriz en ik, droog onder een Pepsi parasol op mijn verjaardag. We hebben Thin en Johnty leren kennen op China beach en samen in de storm gezeten. We zien ze misschien opnieuw want ze zijn ook voor een jaar op reis. IMG_0934.jpg : De ravage in onze straat na de storm. Veel bomen zijn gevallen en een paar daken zijn gesneuveld, maar iedereen was binnen en veilig voor de wind. IMG_0986.jpg : We zijn maar 1 dag in Hoi An gebleven omdat we dachten dat de storm een hele ravage zou achterlaten en de lokale bevolking ons weg zou willen uit Hoi An. Het was net omgekeerd en op onze enige avond hebben we het drakendans-festival van Hoi An gezien. Kinderen verkleedden zich in draken en dansen in de straten van het stadje, zoals ze gebruikelijk doen rond deze tijd van het jaar. Ik ben geschrokken hoe snel de Vietnamezen de draad terug oppikten.

IMG_0951.jpg : Hoi An was heavily flooded but production of the tailored suits & dresses (Hoi An is famous for tailoring & they sew any brand that you like on your new robe) restarted right after the water was gone. On this picture you see a building where the Vietnamese restarted their production of handmade clothes. On the right bottom there is a guy washing cutlery and mugs from the flooded kitchen. It's a pity that it is hard to see in the picture, but what you can see clearly, is how high the water was on the left pilar of the building. Very high ! Resorts are being built along the whole coast. We were wondering who stays there because they were completely 'available'. Loads of trees fell on the streets and on rooftops, everybody was inside and safe for the heavy winds. IMG_0986.jpg: We only stayed 1 day in Hoi An. We thought the storm left a ravage and that the locals would want us out. The Vietnamese were actually having a dragon dancing festival that evening. Children dress up like dragons and dance in the streets, like they usually do this time of the year. I was shocked of how quickly the affected people found their optimism again.

02.10.09 Deze foto is genomen in Hoi An in de straat die parallel loopt met de rivier. Het is de rivier die het lagere gedeelte van de stad onder water heeft gezet. Stadswerkers zijn de laatste resten van de overstroming aan het opruimen, de lokale mensen zitten op straat hun verkoopswaar te wassen.
This picture is taken in Hoi An in de street that goes parellel with the river. It is that rivier that flooded the lower part of the city. City workers are cleaning up the last debris, the local people are on the street washing their merchandise.

Op 24 September hebben we ons strand gevonden op een plaats die My An beach heet, 7 km ten zuiden van Danang. Ons plan was om er 2 dagen te blijven maar de zware storm heeft ons echt doen strand-en voor mijn verjaardag en de 4 dagen daarna. My An beach heeft geen overstroming gehad, en dat, samen met de andere strandgangers van My An beach, heeft voor een geslaagde verjaardag gezorgd.

We found My An beach on the 24th of Sept. and it is 7 km south of Danang. Our ideas was to only stay 2 days but the heavy storm litteraly had us stranded there for my birthday and 4 days after that. My An beach was spared from any floodings. That, and the other beachboys of My An, made it a excellent birthday !

We zijn de grens gemakkelijk overgegaan en goed aangekomen in Hue. Gemakkelijk behalve dan dat de douanist problemen had om me te herkennen op mijn passport foto. Zou het kapper-alarm aan moeten slaan ? // We crossed the border this morning without any problems, except that the immigration officer needed to call a colleague to recognize me on my passport picture. Is it haircut-time ?
16.09.09. Half-Round the world in 1 year / Kick off. 9th of April 2009, Mumbai, India’s biggest city, is our best destination to take the train south to Goa, Kerala and Bangalore. From there we go 4,000 km by train back to north India, see Karnataka, Rajasthan, the Taj Mahal, Varanasi and Nepal. In Nepal we do small treks in the Himalayas and visit Kathmandu. Over de friendship highway, the route goes from Kathmandu to Lhasa by jeep, maximum altitude 5250m and we get to see the Mount Everest. In Lhasa we take the train through China, see the Terracotta warriors in Xi'an, and go 3,500m north to enter Mongolia and arrive in Ulan Bator. In Mongolia we camp in the Khovsgol area near the Russian Siberia, and renew the Chinese Visa to go back south. The clock says 4 months when we trained through China and see Yunnan, South China with its wonderful terraced rice fields. We enter the tropics and after 6 months travels we are in Vietnam. 2 months after that, we should have seen Angkor, the beaches in Thailand & Maleysia ...<e.d. 25.10.09. There is a change of plan after Angkor: we fly from Bangkok to Manila, we go to the Philippines!!> and on a ferry to Indonesia. From either Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, we find our way to Sydney and work for 3 months. We will have traveled for 1 year when we are in Oz and ... and ... and ... that is how far we planned. But we were supposed to come back in 1 year but we are only half around the world. Beatriz and myself love Asia!! So much for planning ahead and scheduling. Let's just see how we get on and the more exciting our trip will be. Wish us good luck on the trip!!
