John Wayne, geboren als Marion Robert Morrison was een legendarisch Amerikaans acteur uit het begin van de geschiedenis van de film. Hij verscheen in zowel films met als zonder geluid.

EXTRA: ----------- Zijn tweede voornaam Robert veranderde in zijn jeugd in Michael, ook kreeg hij de bijnaam Duke, genoemd naar zijn hond. Zijn naam werd ook genoemd als lid van de klu-klu klan.Maar hierover zijn geen bewijzen.
Wayne verscheen in veel mannelijke "macho"-rollen in voornamelijk westerns en oorlogsfilms. Hij werkte veel samen met regisseur John Ford Met regisseur Howard Hawks maakte hij de beroemde trilogie: Rio Bravo, El Dorado en Rio Lobo. Alhoewel hij veel films heeft gemaakt, won hij maar één Oscar. Hij kreeg een nominatie in dezelfde categorie voor de film Sands of Iwo-Jima, en als producent kreeg hij een nominatie voor The Alamo.
John Wayne was in de Tweede Wereldoorlog een van de weinige Hollywood-acteurs die niet (vrijwillig) het leger ingingen. Bij gebrek aan anderen kreeg hij alle kansen om op te klimmen. Tijdens en na de oorlog speelde hij vele veldslagen na in films. Hij was politiek gezien rechts en steunde de Amerikaanse deelname aan de Vietnamoorlog. Volgens vele mede-acteurs was hij aangenaam en tolerant van karakter. Hij hield van zijn vak en zei tegen een interviewster enkele jaren voor zijn dood, dat hij in zijn films gewoon zichzelf speelde. Deze twee woorden geven de kern weer van zijn meer dan 200 films die hij maakte, de rode lijn is steeds weer een goede vent met kleine gebreken, met af en toe een vrouw die voorbij komt, die het rechte pad handhaaft.
Zoals vele acteurs droeg hij in zijn films een pruik. Voor een documentaire tijdens zijn bezoek aan Vietnam (in gevechtspak) had hij geen pruik op -mede vanwege de vochtige tropische hitte- maar deed er verder ook niet moeilijk over, ofschoon bijna iedereen zei dat ze niet wisten dat hij kaal was.
Na periode als actieve roker en de daarop volgende lange strijd tegen de longkanker (één long is circa 10 jaar voor zijn overlijden operatief verwijderd), stierf hij uiteindelijk hier toch aan. Zijn laatste openbare verschijning was bij een uitreiking toen hij wist dat hij nog kort te leven had. Hij was broodmager (met witte pruik) en breekbaar, maar had mede op verzoek van zijn kinderen, laten zien dat hij tot het eind bleef vechten om langer te leven.
John Wayne is begraven met een eenvoudige steen in het Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar in Californië.
Er is een vliegveld naar hem vernoemd, John Wayne Airport in Orange County in Californië.
