US Marine Corps F-35B
Making the type's European debut at RIAT 2014, the F-35B is the so-called STOVL (short take-off/vertical landing) version of the Lightning II, as ordered for the US Marine Corps, the UK's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, and Italy. The other derivatives are the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-35A, destined for the US Air Force and international customers Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Turkey, and the US Navy's F-35C carrier variant (CV). A hugely capable multi-role aircraft, dubbed a 'fifth-generation' platform by its manufacturer, the Lightning II is currently entering US Marine Corps service, while British pilots and maintainers are being trained on the aircraft in the USA.
US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet
Developed as a significant evolution of the F/A-18 Hornet, the Super Hornet first flew towards the end of 1995, and entered US Navy service four years later. Achievement of the aircraft's initial operational capability followed in 2001, and its combat debut occurred just over a year later as part of Operation 'Southern Watch' no-fly enforcement efforts over Iraq. A multi-role air-to-air and air-to-ground platform, the single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F variants have since seen heavy engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The aircraft is also in service with the Royal Australian Air Force, while an electronic attack variant, the EA-18G Growler, is used by both Super Hornet operators as well.
Polish Air force Sukhoi Su-22
Today, the Polish Air Force is the sole European operator of the Su-22, given the NATO codename 'Fitter'. Very much a veteran of the Cold War, this variable-geometry attack aircraft dates originally from 1966, when the first prototype Su-17 (Su-22 being the type's export designation) took to the air. It served for many years as a mainstay of the Warsaw Pact's much-feared strike forces. In Polish Air Force service today are two squadrons operating the single-seat Su-22M-4K and two-seat Su-22UM3K, both now stationed at Świdwin, the 21st Tactical Air Base. Plans have recently been announced to extend the service lives of the Polish 'Fitters', of which 32 remain in use. Production of later Su-22 variants, such as those flown in Poland, did not cease until 1990 - the other nations reported still to be operating the 'Fitter' are Angola, Syria, Vietnam and Yemen.
