Flying Phantom: Glasgow, december 19, 2007
Svitzer UK regret to report that one of its operated tugs, Flying Phantom, sank at approximately 1810 hrs on December 19 in the River Clyde just before the Rothesay Dock and opposite the Clydebank College. At the time the Flying Phantom was towing the 39,738 gross tons bulk carrier Red Jasmine. As a result of the accident, which occured in dense fog, one of the four members of the tugboat crew managed to swim ashore and was taken to the Western Infirmary, Glasgow for treatment. Most regretably the three remaining members of the crew are missing and a major search and rescue effort was immediately mounted involving some eight vessels. It is understood that diving teams are on site continuing to search for those missing.
Next of kin have been contacted and kept informed of the search. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families and friends at this difficult time.
At the time of the accident, three Svitzer tugs were involved in escorting the bulk carrier. The 287 grt tug Flying Phantom was the lead vessel, with the tug Svitzer Mallaig not attached and leading the convoy. A third tug, the Warrior was the stern tug. Svitzer UK will be carrying out its own investigation into this tragic accident and will be cooperating fully with any official investigation.
