The problem could be with read-write permissions in folders.
Open a terminal and enter "alacarte". Then in the terminal window look for error messages that says permission denied. You will then need to change the Permissions for those folders. Open another terminal and enter "gksudo nautilus". Now navigate to the offending folders, right-click and select Properties, then on the Permissions tab change the owner and the permissions to Read-write. This should work.
You may also want to rename the applications.menu file and the settings.menu file and keep them for deletion later when your menus are working.
I have noticed this problem when I partitioned the hard disk to store my user/home/ folder in a separate partition.

    Download Dofus

For example, if the directory link for the download is set as /home/USERNAME/dofus, you should make use of the command
    mkdir $HOME/dofus
to be able to launch the download.

You can download Dofus through two given methods.

Either you choose to get it from the link http://download.dofus.com/full/zip/

Else you can choose the direct command

     cd $HOME/dofus
    wget http://download.dofus.com/full/zip/

    Decompress the file

Once done, the right command in Linux to use to decompress Dofus is simple

     unzip Dofus_v1_26_0.zip

    Use Dofus Online

Now to be able to use Dofus online, choose the web browser of your choice and use the command (if you are using firefox of course else insert the internet browser than you are using..)

     firefox file:///$HOME/dofus/Dofus.html &

Else you can open the browser directly and insert
    file:///home/USERNAME/dofus/Dofus.html
    in the address bar.

Note: You should bearf in mind that this game with Flash. Hence, you you are having some problems with your web browser because of this, you can make use of this link that can give you some tips on how to handle this type of issue http://www.macromedia.com/...

Ubuntu 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope has satisfied the Linux community to no end after its successful launch of the newest version of the distro where stability ands speed both were awesome as per the tech pandits. The other day, while I was going through a series of tests with my own Jaunty, I thought of using Samba with it so that I can share folders. Well, if you don't know, Samba is an open source file/ printer sharing software suite that helps you bridge communication between and within Linux and Windows. So, here are three simple steps on how to use Samba to share folders in Ubuntu 9.04.

    1. First you will have to install samba

    sudo apt-get install samba

    2. After installing, edit the smb.conf ( /etc/samba/smb.conf )

    sudo nano/etc/samba/smb.conf

    What to Change?

    • Change Workgroup to your home network. Save.
• Now Right click the folder that you want to share and choose sharing options.
    • The option windows will appear and give a check to share this folder and guest access.

    3. Restart Samba

    sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

Test your home network using another PC.

If you have a .zip file on your Desktop, for example, double-click it to open it.

If you would like to unzip using the command line, open a terminal and install unzip like this:

    sudo apt-get install unzip

Give your password and that should install the unzip utility.

To use it, navigate to where the .zip file is, then type:

    unzip <filename>

Where <filename> is your .zip archive.

    #1 Tremulous (tremulous.net)
A team based first person shooter (FPS). Tremulous is free to download and play.
In Tremulous there are two teams: Aliens and Humans. Aliens can have such awesome feats as wall-walking (dizzying to say the least), pouncing from great distances, and spraying poisonous gases. Humans can obtain advanced weaponry and armor, and plant strategic devices such as turrets to defend their base.
Tremulous features a unique upgrade system, where players from each team must make a certain number of kills to gain new upgrades (aliens can evolve into more powerful aliens, and humans can obtain better items and gear).

    Install:

    Code:
     sudo apt-get install -y tremulous

    #2 Gridwars (caiman.us/scripts/fw/f2317.html)
A retro top-down-shooter game, but any assumption that it's an old game is evaporated once you see the incredible liquid visuals... do try this one out!

    Download and install from: http://dlx.caiman.us/pageC2.php?nr=2...GridWars38.zip

    Install:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install vdrift vdrift-data

Klik hier om een link te hebben waarmee u dit artikel later terug kunt lezen. How do you install Google's Chromium browser on Ubuntu ?

Unfortunately the new Google Chromium open source browser is not included in the Ubuntu software repositories yet. Therefore installing it is a little more complex than other Ubuntu applications. But it still takes less than five minutes. Here's how...

    1. You need to tell your system to connect to the appropriate software repository. That is, you need to add a line to your /etc/apt/sources.list file similar to this:-

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu {your version of Ubuntu} main

Where {your version of Ubuntu} could be hardy, intrepid, jaunty or karmic. There are several ways this can be achieved. Probably the simplest and most meaningful way for most Ubuntu users is to edit the file manually by using the command:-

    sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

    Alternatively Kubuntu users may use:-

    sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

If you wish, you can also add a comment line to the file to remind yourself later about what you have done. My additional lines looked like:-

    # Chromium-browser repo added by Garf 2009-06-30.
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main

    2. Then you need to install PPA's public key. Do this by typing the following command into your terminal:-

    sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 4E5E17B5

    3. Then you need to tell your system about your repository changes by running the following command in your terminal:-

    sudo apt-get update

    4. Finally you can run the installation command from your terminal:-

    sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

    5. That's it! If the installer does not create a menu item for your new browser then you can always launch it from the comand line, thus:-

    chromium-browser

Of course, at time of writing, Chromium browser is in "alpha" stage. This means it is still quite buggy and has a lot of things that don't work properly. I have played with it quite a bit and it gets better all the time. But it is test software that you use very much at your own risk.

Also, because of the way (K)ubuntu Lnux manages updates, you are likely to be offered several new updates a week. These updates can result in 10MiB downloads.
