A Night At The Opera: Queens Regal Invite Could Not Be Ignored
A Night At The Opera, as we all now know, is a masterpiece. Everything from its title (borrowed from The Marx Brothers 1935 movie) to the music, the albums artwork and the whole pomp and circumstance of the entire package is majestic.
The UK tour to support the release of Sheer Heart Attack got underway during the autumn of 1974, and after taking in Europe and America, it finished at the Budokan in Tokyo, Japan, on 1 May 1975. Between the bands return and the start of another UK tour on 14 November 1975, Queen recorded the album that would turn them from big stars to superstars.
Work on Queens fourth album, another co-produced by the band along with Roy Thomas Baker, began in August 1975, and it was only finished shortly before the opening date of their tour at Liverpools Empire Theatre on 14 November. A Night At The Opera, as we all now know, is a masterpiece. Everything from its title (one that is borrowed from The Marx Brothers 1935 movie) to the music, the albums artwork and the whole pomp and circumstance of the entire package is majestic.
John, Roger, Brian and Freddie took much needed holidays before work on the new project began in earnest with a three-week writing and playing session in a rented Herefordshire house. They then decamped over the Welsh Marches once more to Rockfield. The band later worked in five more studios (Roundhouse, Sarm East, Scorpio, Lansdowne, and Olympic) in their pursuit of perfection, and in so doing, their own self-belief was fully justified.
The 12 tracks that make up A Night At The Opera comfortably broke the 43-minute mark, and like its predecessor, the sequencing of this record creates its own dynamic. This is an album that should be listened to in its entirety rather than through the unpredictability of random play and shuffle.
Queen made the most of the 24 track set-ups Baker brought to the table, and along with the engineer, the late Mike Stone who sadly passed away in 2002, they collectively created a great sounding record. It opens with Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To ), a barely veiled and acerbic open letter to a businessman contact, which was actually given its finishing touches immediately before release. Its one of Freddies sharpest lyrics, so vicious that Brian May wasnt too thrilled to even have to sing the words.
Freddies Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon continued to showcase his piano playing skills and his growing confidence on keyboards helped to make the whole album so much better. There follows a neat transition into Roger Taylors Im In Love With My Car, a paean to speed and auto fixation that would one day be used as the sound-bed for a Jaguar TV advert, meanwhile offering itself as a serious love song. It was also used as B-side to Bohemian Rhapsody, but only after Roger allegedly locked himself in a cupboard at Sarm Studios until the others laughingly agreed to it.
More new ground is broken by John Deacons Youre My Best Friend, which in 1976 became the eminent bass mans first composition to be released as a Queen single, and a hit at that. Very much Johns baby, he even supplies the Wurlitzer organ.
Brian Mays 39 is his first composition to appear on this album and it is a science fiction come space travel number that is a reminder of his learned interest in astrophysics and astronomy in general. Given the songs weird skiffle arrangement, Brian asked Deacon to play double bass, and the number was included in Queens set-list by 1976, becoming an instant crowd favourite.
Brians Sweet Lady accentuated the almost wilful diversity of Queen at this point in their career, with its live rhythm section and heavily distorted rock thrash in ¾ time. Mercurys Seaside Rendezvous is another track that shows the bands inventiveness, since Freddie and Roger provide a woodwind section performed by just their voices, along with a tap dancing sequence they performed on the mixing desk with thimbles over their fingers.
The second side of the original LP commences with Brians lengthy, The Prophets Song, that was inspired, if that is the right word, when he was feverish with hepatitis during the Sheer Heart Attack sessions. A heavy, moody piece, The Prophets Song was the ideal centrepiece for the forthcoming tour. Its Biblical atmosphere being accentuated by the guitarists use of the toy koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument more usually associated with experimental classical music.
Freddies often covered Love Of My Life (written for girlfriend Mary Austin) is a quite beautiful ballad, embellished with Mays harp, Rogers delicate cymbals and the predominant Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar coincidentally purchased by Brian in Japan the previous spring.
Brians Good Company is one of his wise family pieces a song full of sound values and mature reflection. Recorded with the ukulele and his trusty Red Special to hand, their overlapping mimics a traditional Dixieland jazz band feel; the poignant narrative has a twist in the tale.
And so to the colossal, the monumental (adjectives can barely do this song justice), Bohemian Rhapsody. Composed in six sections, mostly by Mercury in his Holland Park home, this was the song that divided opinion even within the ranks. Surely they couldnt expect to get away with this? Mercury was certain of its merits, but seldom gave much away concerning the lyrical structure and the references to classic opera, Old Testament seers and the principal characters Scaramouche and Galileo.
If pressed, Freddie would say: Its one of those songs which has such a fantasy feel about it. I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them Bohemian Rhapsody didnt just come out of thin air. I did a bit of research although it was tongue-in-cheek and mock opera. Why not?
But if he kept his reasoning private, the public response was amazing, especially when he cunningly gave a pre-release tape to DJ friend, Kenny Everett, with a winking, But youre not allowed to play it on air in its entirety. Naturally, Everett ignored that demand, as Mercury knew he would, and played it fourteen times in two days. The panning, the layer upon layer of vocals, the gongs and tympani hell, the bands very own operatic chutzpah this is one of those songs that everyone knows, but that once listened to again, even in hindsight, still baffles and delights.
Ironically, prior to releasing it as a single, one senior EMI executive was convinced that it was too long and he tried to convince the band that it needed to be edited if it was to stand any chance of getting any radio plays.
Mixing the gloriously bombastic with the sweetly simple, Mays guitar solo is bang on the money. Bohemian Rhapsody was very much Freddies thing and also his tour de force, containing as it did elements of works in progress from earlier ventures.
As if the song wasnt visual enough, it was accompanied by a ground-breaking video, and while it was said to be the most expensively constructed single made to that point in time, it recouped in full, and then some.
And that wasnt the end of the affair, and there was only one way to follow it. A revisit to Mays arrangement of the National Anthem, God Save The Queen (surely that didnt go unnoticed in Sex Pistols circles either); it was something theyd been using as a tour finale for some time. Instrumental, multi-layered and strangely affecting, May would achieve a kind of lifetime ambition many years later when he performed it from the roof of Buckingham Palace for the Queens Golden Jubilee in 2002; it was also a kind of homage to Jimi Hendrixs Woodstock version of The Star-Spangled Banner.
And so the album was released on 21 November 1975 and as a result, Christmas belonged to Queen. The sold-out tour that had begun a week before the albums release culminated with a Christmas Eve concert at Hammersmith Odeon that was videotaped and broadcast by the BBC on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Their North American tour kicked off in the fourth week of January and this too proved to be a triumph. A Night At The Opera soared to No.4 on the Billboard album chart and Bohemian Rhapsody became the bands first top ten single on the Hot 100 while Queen were touring America.
Following A Night At The Operas entry into the UK charts on 15 December 1975, there were many Christmas stockings filled with the album, and two days after Christmas it topped the charts. It stayed there over the New Years holiday before being replaced by Perry Comos Greatest Hits for a week. So strong was the surge in sales, however, that Queen returned to the top spot for another two weeks. Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody was at No.1 on the UK singles chart for 9 weeks, beginning on 29 November and staying there until 31 January the following year. As we now all know, it would later return to the top spot at a far less happy time.

1935, Born on this day, American blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter James Cotton. He worked in Howlin' Wolf's band in the early 1950s. In 1955, he was recruited by Muddy Waters to come to Chicago and join his band. In 2006, Cotton was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. He died from pneumonia aged 81 on 16 March 2017.

2005, American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer Luther Vandross died at the age of 54 at the JFK Medical Centre in New Jersey, two years after suffering a major stroke. 2013, Boston guitarist Tom Scholz was ordered to pay $132,000 in court fees to the Boston Herald after he unsuccessfully sued the newspaper. The Herald had suggested that Scholz was responsible for the 2007 suicide of Boston lead singer Brad Delp, but a Superior Court judge ruled that the paper could not be held liable for defaming Scholz because it's impossible to know what caused Delp to kill himself.
1936, Bon on this day, American folk singer Dave Van Ronk who was an important figure in the American folk music revival and New York City's Greenwich Village scene in the Sixties, he was nicknamed the "Mayor of MacDougal Street". Bob Dylan recorded Van Ronk's arrangement of the traditional song House of the Rising Sun on his first album, which The Animals turned into a No.1 UK single in 1964, helping inaugurate the folk-rock movement. 2001, Beach Boys member Al Jardine went to court in a bid to sue his former band mates, claiming he had been frozen out of the Beach Boys. The $4 million (£2.35 million) suit was filed against Mike Love, Brian Wilson, the Carl Wilson Trust and Brother Records Incorporated in a New York Superior Court. In 1998 a US judge temporarily barred Jardine from performing under the name Beach Boys Family And Friends after representations from Mike Love and Brother Records. Jardine lost the case in 2003.

The incident from which Blythe was charged reportedly took place in 2010 at the band's show at Club Abaton, in Prague. According to reports, a fan jumped up on the stage where a tussle ensued in which the fan was injured. The fan later died, reportedly as a result of those injuries.

Together, along with Black, they recorded Presley's first single, 'That's All Right (Mama).' The recording session was only meant to be an audition; instead, the trio made music history.

2002, One day before the scheduled first show of The Who's 2002 US tour, bass player John Entwistle, died aged 57 in his hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Entwistle had gone to bed that night with a stripper, who woke at 10am to find Entwistle cold and unresponsive. The Las Vegas medical examiner determined that death was due to a heart attack induced by an undetermined amount of cocaine.
2003, Rapper Mystikal pleaded guilty to charges that he forced his hairstylist to perform sex acts on him and two bodyguards. Mystikal, (real name Michael Tyler), had been charged with aggravated rape. He agreed to plead guilty and was sentenced to five years' probation.
2004, Beastie Boys were at No.1 on the US album chart with 'To The 5 Boroughs' the rappers fourth US No.1. Mike Skinner scored his first UK No.1 album when The Streets album 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' went to the top of the charts.

2012, The chief medical officer of Russia said that The Beatles were to blame for the country's drug problem. Yevgeny Bryun, the nation's medical chief, said that the country's youth first got introduced to the idea of drug-taking when The Beatles traveled to India to "expand their minds". Bryun added that it was after this news entered public consciousness that people in Russia realised you could make money from the sale of drugs. When business then realised it was possible to make money from this, goods associated with pleasure, that was when the growth in the demand for drugs started."

2016, Mack Rice, the composer who wrote 'Mustang Sally' died in Detroit at the age of 82. Rice originally recorded 'Mustang Sally' himself in 1965, but the song was not initially a hit. It became a chart success two years later, after Rice's former Falcons bandmate Wilson Pickett asked if he could record it. Rice was also known for co-writing one of the Staple Singers' biggest hits, 'Respect Yourself'.
1910, Born on this day, Dutch-born American manager Colonel Tom Parker, who became Elvis Presley's manager. Before working in the music business Parker ran a troupe of dancing chickens. His exceptionally high earnings have led some to question whether it came at the detriment of his client. He died on January 21st 1997 age 87 after he suffered a stroke.

The local paper ran a preview which read; A good looking youngster who has become a juke-box favorite with his That's Alright, Mama, and Blue Moon of Kentucky. Presley is expected to repeat some of his hit tunes at the Airmen's Club show in addition to mixing up a few country tunes with some "bop" and novelty numbers.
1961, Gary U.S. Bonds started a two-week run at No.1 on the US charts with 'Quarter To Three', a No.7 hit in the UK. Before Bonds recorded this, it was an instrumental by The Church Street Five called 'A Night With Daddy G.' Bond's manager added lyrics to it and had him record it. 1964, Roy Orbison was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'It's Over', his second UK No.1. Orbison was the first American artist to score a UK No.1 in the past 47 weeks.
1966, The Beatles started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Paperback Writer', the group's 12th US No.1. The track is marked by the boosted bass guitar sound throughout, partly in response to John Lennon demanding to know why the bass on a certain Wilson Pickett record far exceeded the bass on any Beatles records. 2004, Rapper DMX was arrested on charges that he and another man tried to steal a car from New York's Kennedy airport. DMX - real name is Earl Simmons - and Jackie Hudgins were held after the city's Port Authority police interrupted a dispute. The pair were arrested on charges of attempted robbery, criminal impersonation and criminal mischief. A spokesman said a preliminary investigation indicated that Mr Simmons may have identified himself as a federal agent.
2006, Turkish-American music producer and arranger Arif Mardin died aged 74 from pancreatic cancer. He worked at Atlantic Records for over 30 years, before moving to EMI. The winner of 11 Grammy Awards, he worked with Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Roberta Flack, Wilson Pickett, Average White Band, The Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand and Norah Jones.
2009, Michael Jackson died at the age of 50, after suffering heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills. The eighth child of the Jackson family, he debuted with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964.
