Welcome to
my first blog in my life. My name is Sofie De Waele and Im a student Marketing
Business at the Artevelde college Ghent. For my English course, I had to write
a blog about something. I love food, I love my life in Ghent, so it was an easy
choice.
This year is a big year for me. After one year going home every day after
classes, I am now allowed to stay in Ghent and live there during the week. In
the weekends, I have to go home again to West-Flanders. It was easy last year,
everyday my mother made food for me. After a long day in Ghent, I knew that my
food was warm and ready to eat when I came home. Now it is different. I have to
buy and cook my own food but in Ghent, the temptations of the 4 Ps are too big
to eat and cook healthy.
But what do
I mean with the 4 Ps of Food?
The 4 Ps of Food are the 4 most common meals you find in Ghent. I will write a
blog message of each kind of meal and my experiences when I eat it.
The 4 Ps are:
PizzaPita
Pasta Potatoes (French Fries)
Im really
excited to try these 4 meals and write about my experiences. My next message on
my blog will be about the first P : PIZZA !
Welcome to
my last blog message. This is the sixth message and I already mentioned the
meaning of the 4 Ps. In the marketing, they sometimes talk about the 5 Ps
(Product, Place, Price, Promotion and People). So like I said in my last
message, I will talk again about potatoes today but in a different way.
The last message was about French fries because it is more in the line of fast
food like pizza, pasta, pita but you can also use potatoes in a different way,
like in the restaurant named POTATOLICIOUS.
This
restaurant is situated in Ghent and has a very good concept. The slogan of the
restaurant is: Fast, Healthy, Cheap, Exciting and Delicious. The concept is
very easy. You get a potato and then you can choose which toppings you will
take. The toppings are fresh, healthy, because there are a lot of vegetables.
The restaurant has propositions but you can also choose your one vegetables and
sauces.
You can eat
in the restaurant but you can also order and they will bring it to your house
(home delivery). The home delivery is a new concept, it was not in the
beginning years of the restaurant. When you start home delivery you can reach a
bigger public. Not everyone likes to go out and eat.
So, this
was my last message
See you
later, maybe

PS: the website of Potatolicious: www. potatolicious.be
Its time for
the fourth P and the last one: POTATOES. When you think of potatoes, you dont
think of fast food but we have off course our famous Belgian (French) fries. On
every corner of the Belgian streets, you find the famous French fries shops.
Belgium is the only country where you can find the typical shops with French
fries and the other meat snacks. But maybe you cant say that it is meat, maybe
more meat-ish.
French
fries are made with potatoes. The potatoes are cut in pieces and fried in juicy
oil. Also the other snacks are being fried. When you fry everything and put a
good sauce on it, you get a good unhealthy plate.
The average
Belgian citizen eats in average every week one time French fries with maybe
Flemish beef stew. This is a really famous dish but in a fries shop you have hundreds
of different types of meat-ish food:
A couple
examples, because its impossible to name them all:
Chicken
fingers: little pieces with chicken and crust
Cervela:
a big sausage
Vegetarian
snacks
When I was
in the youth movement, we ate every week, on Sunday evening, together French
fries. It was a real family moment. Everyone with his own order with different
sauce and different snacks.
My next and
last message will be again about potatoes but in a different way.
It has
still the same subject, the 4 Ps of food. After pizza and pita, its time for
pasta.
I know that pizza is also a kind of pasta but with the third P , I mean the
other kinds.
The origin of pasta is Italy. Its a famous image: Italian mothers who are
making the homemade pasta with a family recipe. In real life, the most people
dont make it themselves. There are a lot of different brands of pasta, e.g.
Soubry, Barilla, San Remo,
When you think
of pasta, a certain type will appear in your thoughts. But there are very
different types. Each one with different shapes and sizes.
I can sum up thousand types of pasta.
The most
common ones are:
Spaghetti
Macaroni
Farfalle:
little bow ties
Fusilli:
corkscrew pasta, thick long spirals
Fettuccini
Linguine
Penne
Cannelloni
When you
eat pasta, its too dry to eat without a good sauce with vegetables and meat or
fish. Again there are a lot of sauces you can choose from. When you make a
sauce you can throw everything in a pot and eat it with the pasta. Pasta are
the potatoes of the Italian.
Some examples of famous sauces are bolognaise, pesto, curry,
This is my third blog message of
my life and today were talking about the second P: PITA.
Pita is a leavened flatbread. It is founded in the Middle Eastern cuisine. But today you
can find it everywhere. Most of the time, when you want to buy a pita, the
maker has an Turkish nationality.
You have a lot of different varieties but when you buy a pita in Belgium you
will have always the same choices.
Choices you have
when you walk in a pita shop: à you can choose two kinds of meat: kebab
or chicken à there are many forms you can choose from:
You have the pita bread, its an very typical bread and also the original.
You also have the dürüm, its a wrap with the meat you choose and vegetables.
When you dont like the choices with the bread, you can also choose to have a
plate with the meat, vegetables and French fries.
It doesnt matter
which kind of dish you choose, you have always the option which kind of vegetables
you want, which size you want to take (small, medium or large) and a very
important aspect of the taste is the kind of sauce you choose: ketchup, mayonnaise,
When I go to a
pita shop, I take almost every time the same choice: a small chicken plate with
all the vegetables and mayonnaise. I prefer
not too much raw onions.
Like I mentioned in the
previous blog message, I will write today about the first P: PIZZA. It is one
of my favorites. If I could, I would eat it every day. You have so many
different kinds of pizza, it tastes every time different but a little bit the
same. Pizza
is a part of the Italian pasta family.
But what is
pizza?? What do you have to do when you want to make a pizza? Which are the
different toppings? Do have different kinds of dough?
When you
want to make a pizza, there are three important components: the dough, the
tomato sauce and the toppings. You will start with making a dough. You have a
lot of different kinds of dough. For example, when you go to the pizza hut, you
can choose 4 kinds of dough: Classic, Pan, Cheesy crust, Super pan. The super
pan dough is a new kind of dough. When you watch television this evening, you
will certainly see the new commercial.
The second
important component is the tomato sauce. Every pizza maker has his own special
recipe and its always a secret. The tomato sauce makes or breaks the taste of
the pizza.
The last important
part of a pizza are the toppings. You have a lot of different toppings,
actually you can throw everything on a pizza (well it has to be eatable). The
most famous toppings are:
Pepperoni:
a spicy sausage
Olives
Mushrooms
Cheese:
mozzarella, plain cheese,
Chicken
Beef:
meatballs
Onions
Peppers
Extra
tomato slices
Fish:
anchovies, prawns,
So today we discussed the first P, see you tomorrow to learn more about the
second P: PITTA.
