We've learned the importance of communicative skills. That's why I've searched a video where we can learn how to speak in public.

Klik op de afbeelding om de link te volgen "Many problems of misunderstandings or problems comes from that children these days don't know what now the good language really is"

As a teacher or as parents you want the best for your child, and when you hear that your child has a bad behaviour you need to do something about it. Now for the example of Lee, he wasn't a bad student but he don't say much in the classroom.

Lee had his "own language" the skateboard language. Lee did not know the why there is in class an other language that he and his friends use on the streets and at home.

Helen Nicholson wanted to help Lee at his language and used the specific terms of skateboard to help Lee understand why it is so important to learn many languages as possible. Learning is a practical word, i mean that if u want to learn you need to do and you need to "immigrate" you in that socicity and make the language at your own.

In this post i am going to reflect about the lesson that give us information about how obstacles are in the way of good and effective communication:

There are 3 specifiek obstacles in our live.

    1. We are generally not fully aware of the norms, values and rules that we learnt during our socialization. We can see that every individual has his/her own perspective and every individual has his/her interpertation of everything around them. For example the subject racisme, In our community there are different groups that are pro or contra about the migration here in Belgium. This different groups want that everybody see what they see.

    2. People believe that their opinion, values and norms count for everyone.

    3. People fail to make their own values, norms and opinions giving to other people and also fail to give their solutions because we are to slow to understand our own values. I think that when we have sufficient knowledge about our own communicationrules that we can express ourself to the community.

The most natural solution for those problems is to use the 3 Step Method!

Step 1: getting to know one’s own norms, values and behavioural codes.

Step 2: getting to know the norms, values and behavioural codes of the others (opinion ≠ fact).

Step 3: determining how to deal with the observed differences in the given situation.

This lesson was about the high and low cultures in our society. But what is the difference.

High context is that people know what they are doing for a long period, this means that those people have an idea from how they want to live and how they see their life in the future. The high context means that you are with others in a group that you know what you can do, this is more for family and friends.

Low context is people that always want to have a other connection but on a small period. The low context means that you are one of the others and that you all have the same understanding because there are rules , this more public, example: airport, the mall,...

We can conclude that the relationships are always different, every situation in your life has another structure. As a European teacher I have to be able to see differences between the cultures and find a way to approach and respond to them. Not only with pupils but also with parents, because in some cultures they have other habits, values, understandings.

The icebergmetaphor is a good theory to look, if u are on a boat, you know what is for u and you see it, but on a boat is the most important to look what is under your boat. This is a big secret. That part that we can see, is a culture ( T-shirt, hat,...). When the ship is near the iceberg, you are near a culture.

When you are entering a culture it means that we are curious to see what is in that culture, this can be dangerous. Below the ship there is a part that we don't know about the culture and this is for us a big question mark.

This blog is about the cultures in our country: Belgium.

We have the big different groups here, the flemings and the muslims. They all have a other opinion and the all have a other culture. But what is now the difference, it has to do with Logos en Mythos.

Logos says something about how something really is, with evidence. Like the water, water is H2O but it can't tell you more of it.

Mythos says something about how something is but not on a scientific level. Like the water, mythos can say that water comes from rain and that a sea exists from water.

In Belgium is this also the same, the logos are most of the time the muslims, they believe in things without knowing that it mabey can not be. Mythos are the flemings they need also a prove of it really exist and when it not exist they don't believe it.

This is my opinion how the people think here in Belgium, if you have a other opinion, just let me know!

This lesson was very interesting because we were looking at the politici at 2 different country's. Germany and France have failed the multiculturalism. This is because they always look from one side i think, they blame one group of people but they do not search for a solution. What Angela Merkel and Sarkozy wanted to say is that the different groups of people in there country don't have a common thing.

I think that much people criticize the Mulslims. Oke they have a other religion, oke they have a other opinion over life, but we need to look at ourself. What the biggest problem is that we always think that someone else did it, we not blame ourself but we blame others.

As a European teacher I think multiculturalism develops us as a person and a society. It is a benefit to learn about different cultures. We have to take an open attitude towards people and not live in ‘our’ world.

This week we went to Antwerp city and with city i really mean al the streets or  neighbourhood. This was a chance to see things that we never saw. I went to a place were people help people that live on the street, this was for me one of the lightpoints from the trip. there are so many bad things in the world but there are always people that help the others.

I can give you the advice, help the poor and help who need it and you feel yourself much better. Helping somebody else does miracles.

This is my first blog about Intercultural.

During the first lesson we were discussing what's the different is between multicultural, intercultural and international.

Multicutural means that there are different groups of people in the same country, these groups have there own opinion. For example : In belgium are so much different nationalities but they have all there own opinion and different lifestyles.

Intercultural means that there is one group with there own culture against others cultures in one country. Intercultural communication does not always work. Look at the world, there is always a fight for something that 2 groups are not agree with eachother.

International means that in one country there are people with the same culture but they have also there own opinion. In belgium you can see this in the political crises that we have now, there is a sort of wall against the flemish and the walloons. But there is also a connection and that is the link that we need to find for a good solution.
