Lafcadio Hearns “Vluchtige blikken op een onbekend Japan” is ideaal leesvoer als je de Noordwestelijke aan een meer gelegen stad Matsue bezoekt. Hearn moet een inspiratie voor zowel Tolkien als JMS (Babylon 5) geweest zijn, wnneer hij schrijft over “elfachtige kleine schepen die op de rivier tewater worden gelaten.. het vage idee achter deze vrome daad is dat alle wateren naar de zee vloeien en de zee zelf  naar de Neder-verre landen”  of wanner hij ons onthaalt op een van de vele andere verhalen uit het Japan dat hij zo bewondert. Maar hij geeft ook prachtige beschrijvingen an Matsue, waar hij een korte periode tijdens de jaren 1880 woonde. De historische ijzeren brug waar we overheen lopen terwijl de zonsondergang bewonderen en de oude lantaarns aanfloepen schemert naar andere tijden als Hearn zijn feestelijke opening beschrijft door de “twee gelukkigste mensen in Matsue”, twee echtparen die meer dan vijftig jaar getrouwd zijn terwijl hun hele familie nog steeds in leven is, terwijl veel van de plattelandsmensen wegblijven omdat een gerucht de ronde doet dat uit de aanwezigen een mensenoffer geselecteerd zal worden om de brug te stabiliseren, net zals de oude houten brug nodig had gehad.

   

Lafcadio Hearn’s “Glimpses of an unfamiliar Japan” is ideal reading material when visiting the Nortwest lakeside town of Matsue. Hearn must have been an inspiration for Tolkien and JMS (Babylon 5) alike, when in writing of “elfish little ships .. which are launched upon rivers ... the vague idea behind the pious act is that all waters flow to the sea and the sea itself unto the Nether-distant land” or when he regales one of the many other tales of the Japan he so much admires. But he also wonderfully describes Matsue, where he lived for a short while in the 1890s. The historic iron bridge we walk over, admiring the sunset over the lake while the old  lanterns flicker on, is recalls other times when Hearn describes its opening ceremony - the main participants are the ‘two happiest people in Matsue’: two aged couples who’d been married for more than fifty years, with their entire families still alive. But many of the country folk stayed away due to a rumour that a human sacrifice would be picked from among those present to stabilise the bridge, just as the old wooden bridge had required...

Matsue is een fantastische stad om te bezoeken. We vergapen ons aan een volledig bewaard gebleven samoeraihuis, compleet met uitleg, een van de twaalf Japanse kastelen (of Jo’s) die nog in originele toestand intact zijn gebkeven, en we kunnen ongestoord rondlopen in Lafcadio Hearns huis: eindelijk een kans om een tradiitioneel Japans huis zelf te ervaren. De zonsondergangen over de baai zijn magisch, het schelpdieren uit de baai verser van vers.

Matsue is a fantastic city to visit. We’re gawking at a completely preserved samurai residence, complete with explanations, at one of the twelve castles (or Jo’s) still existing in its original state, and we’re allowed to walk around undisturbed in Lafcadio Hearns’s residence: at last a chance to experience a traditional Japanese house firsthand. The sunsets over the bay are magical, the shellfish from the bay fresher than fresh.
