On rare occasions you hear this album that makes you wonder how these guys did this. Welcome to the magical world of Areknamés, Italian Progs best kept secret. Theres no exaggeration in saying this band is the true heir to Van Der Graaf Generator. There has always been a friendly bond between Peter Hammills troop and Italy. In 1972 their masterful Pawn Hearts was at number one in the countrys album charts! Areknaméss second Love hate roundtrip already came out in 2006 and nearly slipped under my radar. It takes the listener along impressive developments full of analogue keyboards (great organ and Mellotron heaven!), angular guitars and inverted drum patterns. The sound and the lyrics are ominous, dark and very retro seventies. Michele Epifanes voice is as theatrical as Hammills. Addictive stuff, this is!

Far Corner: Endangered ( * * * * )
In the good old days of prog there were progressive musicians who could everything they touched, mutate into gold. Take for instance drummer extraordinaire Bill Bruford, who always did interesting things with Yes, King Crimson, UK, Genesis and his own fusion bands Bruford and Earthworks. It is a separate category; many are called, but only a few are chosen. Luckily the newest generation of prog musicians has its wizards too. Like American bassist William Kopecky, famous for his unique and expressive playing. That Parallel Minds debut in 2005 proved to be a more than succeeded album, was perhaps not only his merit, but still. I still put this CD into my player because of the wonderful bass lines. In Wisconsin-based Far Corner, Kopecky is of great value as well. This quartet, operating in a far corner of the musical universe, brings us top-notch instrumental chamber and classical rock that - from afar - reminds us of mid-seventies King Crimson and Univers Zero. But its definitely not a copycat. Classically trained composer and keyboardist Dan Maske fuses rock with Stravinsky and Bartok, and with jazz and zeuhl.
Far Corners second CD Endangered is a small miracle, because although complex and of instrumental virtuosity, it still is accessible music. The menacing, quasi improvised soundscapes are the least accessible, but the albums backbone are the four adventurous compositions. The basic sound is layed down by multiple percussion, cello, fretted and fretless bass and a variety of keys. The cello is sometimes electrified, which adds to the sonic heaviness; the instrument then sounds like a guitar riffing! Compared to the debut, the colour palette is expanded with violin, melodica and trumpet, providing surprising moments especially in the twenty-minute title track. The CDs title refers not only to the planets endangered species, but to adventurous music of artistic integrity. With Far Corner, our sector has gained yet another warm-hearted advocate.

NeBeLNeST: ZePTO ( * * * * 1/2 )
It seems the adventurous Cuneiform label owns the rights on the dark side of prog in its most complex appearances (Far Corner, Present, Univers Zero). Considering the degree of difficulty, French instrumental quartet NeBeLNeST shines no less, and they act in the same sinister way. Their music is inventive, dark, angular. ZePTO is already their third record, and again it is a challenge, especially considering the relentless pace the listener has to keep up with. The complexity demands concentration, which leads to our emotional involvement. The songs with heads and tales are strong enough that they dont require vocal input. The last two tracks are rather unstructured free jazz improvisations clearly an acquired taste. Either way, all performances are rock solid. Each musician shines in his own right and demonstrates a stylistic versatility that reminds us of King Crimson. Olivier Tejedor delivers inverted melodies, and otherwise he juggles with some weird synthesizer flights. Drummer Michaël Anselmi acts like a Spanish fury and yet plays with admirable discipline. In guitar and bass you can hear some distant echoes from the Crimson king as well. Yet NeBeLNeST is far from being a copycat of the British masters. In other words, NeBeLNeST succeeds in creating a believable post-Crimson sound.
De Poolse neoproglegende Collage genereerde twee offshoots: Satellite en Believe. Deze laatste teert vooral op de talenten van gitarist Mirek Gil. Het album This Bread Is Mine doet net dat. Het keyboardaandeel is tot het minimum beperkt, de symfonische klanken borrelen vooral uit de gitaar en de viool van Satomi. In de beste tracks levert dat duellerend vuurwerk op. Jammer genoeg zijn niet alle songs even zorgvuldig uitgewerkt. De akoestische nummers vullen maar voegen weinig toe. De nieuwe zanger past wel bij de donkere ondertoon van het album, en ik verwacht dat hij - net als dit album - nog zal groeien.

Deze plaat zou je kunnen wijsmaken dat het hier om een obscure parel uit de beginjaren '70 ging. Van een kosmische retrotrip gesproken! Eigenlijk is dit het albumdebuut van een kwintet uit San Diego dat de taal van de psychedelische spacerock heel goed onder de knie heeft. De heren hebben zelfs een heel bijzondere teletijdmachine want de gangbare productievoorwaarden van veertig jaar terug werden liefdevol gekopieerd. Gelukkig is er goed nagedacht over de composities; hier geen doel- en oeverloos gejam. En men weet deksels goed hoe er opgebouwd moet worden naar een climax. Soms lijkt The Weirding wel het tweelingbroertje van Pink Floyd's Meddle. Dit is geen statisch rariteitenmuseum, maar entertainment in het kwadraat. En voor de toetsenfanaat een waar smorgasbord van mellotron, hammond en moog.

Airbag: Identity ( * * * 1/2 )
Je moet het maar doen: als volstrekt onbekende band meteen de eindejaarslijstjes halen. De bandnaam bleek goed gekozen; met een enorme snelheid kwam dit vijftal uit een Noorse fjord opgedoken. Niet bepaald een plek waar authentieke progrock welig tiert. Noorwegen is Zweden niet. Met de landgenoten van Gazpacho heeft men de onversneden melancholie gemeen. Maar in tegenstelling tot wat hun lancering doet vermoeden, sleept Airbag zich van song naar song. Het sterk aan Floyd referende tempo wordt op de duur stereotiep; wat meer variatie had dit album flink vooruit geholpen. Zang en ritmesectie getuigen van een passende terughoudendheid. Identity is daarom vooral een gitaaralbum geworden. Inderdaad, bijzonder fraaie gitaarlicks, David Gilmour is nooit veraf. En af en toe gebeurt het: dan breekt de magie door. Als debuut mag dit er zijn, maar de troefkaarten zijn (nog) niet uitgespeeld. Als de zoektocht naar een eigen identiteit uiteindelijk beloond wordt, kan hier iets prachtigs uit groeien dat het Pink Floyd-epigonisme overstijgt.
Ondanks de beperkte output (twee studioalbums in 17 jaar) draaien deze veteranen al een hele tijd mee; gitarist Tim Birrell en bassist Jim Murdoch vonden elkaar al begin jaren '70 in de Schotse progband Armageddon. Nieuwe keyboardspeler Mike Varty (Shadowland) behoort tot de inner circle van Clive Nolan en verkreeg zo een optreden met audiovisuele registratie in de mooie zaal van het Poolse Katowice. Zoals steeds heeft het lokale Metal Mind team er geen half werk van gemaakt. Schijnen de heren op DVD eerder statisch over te komen, op de twee luisterschijven spatten de vonken eraf. Credo is dan ook één van de best bewaarde geheimen uit de Britse symfoscene. Wie heimwee koestert naar het vroege Marillion met Fish, moet hier absoluut mee kennismaken. De voor het merendeel uitgebalanceerde, theatrale prog met een knap vertellende Mark Colton maakt van This Is What We Do meteen een vertrouwd klinkend album waar het steeds prettig naar teruggrijpen is.

Darwin's Radio: Template For A Generation ( * * * * 1/2 )
Het kan verkeren. Ruim tien jaar terug was Grey Lady Down een middelmatige neoprog-outfit die de clichés omtrent het genre vooral bevestigde. Vandaag maken bassist Sean Spear en toetsenist Mark Westworth deel uit van Darwin's Radio. Westworth vult zelfs in voor Martin Orford aan de knoppen van IQ. Maar dé onbetwiste leider is zanger en gitarist Declan Burke, die we al kennen van het laatste Frostalbum. Van zijn tribute band Spirit Of Rush brengt hij drummer Tim Churchman mee. De tweede langspeler van DR is een voltreffer, gemeten aan de sterkte van drie labyrinthische epics. Burke tilt zijn nieuwe band ver boven de middelmaat uit. De individuele talenten staan in dienst van overtuigende composities die dit 'sjabloon voor een generatie' steeds opnieuw boeiend inkleuren.
