November Is a Great Time to Quit Smoking

November is a great time to try again to kick the smoking habit.

I say "again" because, as a 30-year-smoker who tried to quit for 25 of those years, I'm pretty sure all smokers try to quit again and again.

During November, carrying on the work of journalist Peter Jennings, ABC News is presenting a series of reports on quitting smoking and lung cancer prevention.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and November 17th is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout. It's a perfect time for the 51 million Americans who still smoke cigarettes to make a serious effort at quitting so they won't be part of the 160,000 who die from smoking each year in the U.S.

There is help, especially during November

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, and the North American Quitline Consortium is providing resources to help people quit smoking. There's a national network of quitlines, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, which automatically connects callers to their state-based quitlines, and to the Web site  for additional resources on quitting and lung cancer.

ABCNews.com is devoting a portion of its Web site to "Quit to Live: Fighting Lung Cancer." The section includes links to smoking cessation resources; and a "Quitters Blog" documenting peoples' attempts to quit smoking.

The Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout helps smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever.

    A big mistake

Smoking cigarettes was the biggest mistake of my life.

To quit, I tried everything from shock therapy to hypnosis. My wife left me in a motel in my underwear for days so I couldn't buy cigarettes. I finally was able to quit during a 10-day hospital stay with a collapsed lung. Something about having a steel rod shoved into my chest with no anaesthetic to reinflate the lung made me really want to quit.

But the damage was done. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and worst of all, allowing my wife's and daughter's lungs to be polluted year after year by my second-hand smoke.

The primary cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoke. Today, lung cancer deaths are falling in states with strong tobacco control laws.

    Chemicals and nicotine

The Cancer Society says cigarette smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known to cause cancer. The tobacco burns while a cigarette is smoked, exposing the smoker and others to these deadly chemicals, tars and gases.

Nicotine does not cause cancer, but it does keep many people addicted to smoking. Each puff of a cigarette delivers a concentrated dose of nicotine straight to the brain -- and reinforces the need for the next puff.

Even after you've given up nicotine, you may still want to smoke. To maximize your chances of staying smoke-free for good, you need a plan.

The Cancer Society can help you come up with a plan, taking you step by step through making the decision, preparations, and following through.

Moving from one step to the next requires careful thought and preparation. And, no, it won't be easy. But this time, this month, it might just work.

Watch the news. Think about it. Call the quitline. Work on your plan.

It's a great time to try again.

20 Quick Tips to Help You Quit Smoking

    1. Believe in yourself. Believe that you can quit. Think about
some of the most difficult things you have done in your life and
realize that you have the guts and determination to quit
    smoking. It's up to you.

    2. After reading this list, sit down and write your own list,
customized to your personality and way of doing things. Create
    you own plan for quitting.

    3. Write down why you want to quit (the benefits of quitting):
live longer, feel better, for your family, save money, smell
better, find a mate more easily, etc. You know what's bad about
smoking and you know what you'll get by quitting. Put it on
    paper and read it daily.

    4. Ask your family and friends to support your decision to quit.
Ask them to be completely supportive and non-judgmental. Let
them know ahead of time that you will probably be irritable and
even irrational while you withdraw from your smoking habit.

    5. Set a quit date. Decide what day you will extinguish your
cigarettes forever. Write it down. Plan for it. Prepare your
mind for the "first day of the rest of your life". You might
even hold a small ceremony when you smoke you last cigarette, or
on the morning of the quit date.

    6. Talk with your doctor about quitting. Support and guidance
from a physician is a proven way to better your chances to quit.

    7. Begin an exercise program. Exercise is simply incompatible
with smoking. Exercise relieves stress and helps your body
recover from years of damage from cigarettes. If necessary,
start slow, with a short walk once or twice per day. Build up to
30 to 40 minutes of rigorous activity, 3 or 4 times per week.
Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.

    8. Do some deep breathing each day for 3 to 5 minutes. Breathe
in through your nose very slowly, hold the breath for a few
seconds, and exhale very slowly through your mouth. Try doing
your breathing with your eyes closed and go to step 9.

    9. Visualize your way to becoming a non-smoker. While doing your
deep breathing in step 8, you can close your eyes and begin to
imagine yourself as a non-smoker. See yourself enjoying your
exercise in step 7. See yourself turning down a cigarette that
someone offers you. See yourself throwing all your cigarettes
away, and winning a gold medal for doing so. Develop your own
    creative visualizations. Visualization works.

    10. Cut back on cigarettes gradually (if you cut back gradually,
be sure to set a quit date on which you WILL quit). Ways to cut
back gradually include: plan how many cigarettes you will smoke
each day until your quit date, making the number you smoke
smaller each day; buy only one pack at a time; change brands so
you don't enjoy smoking as much; give your cigarettes to someone
else, so that you have to ask for them each time you want to
    smoke.

    11. Quit smoking "cold turkey". Many smokers find that the only
way they can truly quit once and for all is to just quit
abruptly without trying to slowly taper off. Find the method
that works best for you: gradually quitting or cold turkey. If
one way doesn't work do the other.

    12. Find another smoker who is trying to quit, and help each
other with positive words and by lending an ear when quitting
becomes difficult. Visit this Bulletin Board and this Chat Room
    to find a "quit buddy."

    13. Have your teeth cleaned. Enjoy the way your teeth look and
feel and plan to keep them that way.

    14. After you quit, plan to celebrate the milestones in your
journey to becoming a non-smoker. After two weeks of being
smoke-free, see a movie. After a month, go to a fancy restaurant
(be sure to sit in the non-smoking section). After three months,
go for a long weekend to a favorite get-away. After six months,
buy yourself something frivolous. After a year, have a party for
yourself. Invite your family and friends to your "birthday"
party and celebrate your new chance at a long, healthy life.

    15. Drink lots of water. Water is good for you anyway, and most
people don't get enough. It will help flush the nicotine and
other chemicals out of your body, plus it can help reduce
cravings by fulfilling the "oral desires" that you may have.

    16. Learn what triggers your desire for a cigarette, such as
stress, the end of a meal, arrival at work, entering a bar, etc.
Avoid these triggers or if that's impossible, plan alternative
ways to deal with the triggers.

    17. Find something to hold in your hand and mouth, to replace
cigarettes. Consider drinking straws or you might try an
    artificial cigarette.

    18. Write yourself an inspirational song or poem about quitting,
cigarettes, and what it means to you to quit. Read it daily.

    19. Keep a picture of your family or someone very important to
you with you at all times. On a piece of paper, write the words
"I'm quitting for myself and for you (or "them")". Tape your
written message to the picture. Whenever you have the urge to
smoke, look at the picture and read the message.

    20. Whenever you have a craving for a cigarette, instead of
lighting up, write down your feelings or whatever is on your
mind. Keep this "journal" with you at all times.

Good luck in your efforts to quit smoking.

Smoking is a bad habit that prevents you to reach your full potential. Quit smoking today!

The prospect of quitting smoking seems daunting for the millions of people who smoke, and particularly for those that have been smoking for some time. No one will argue that an addiction to nicotine is a serious one and it is also multifaceted: indeed, there is a physical component to it since your body craves the nicotine the cigarettes contain, and there's the psychological one, in that many habits and situations become associated with cigarettes for the smoker. Consequently, in order to quit smoking, it is important that you come up with a plan of attack: if the cold-turkey technique works for some people, the vast majority of smokers will succeed only with the help of a more comprehensive plan.

The first time you will consider the prospect of quitting smoking, it's probably going to seem far fetched. However, I want you to keep in mind that thousands of people - people just like you - quit smoking every year. If they can do it, there's no reason that you can't do it too. Also, many smokers also feel that it is "too-late" to quit smoking after a certain age. Simply put, this isn't true, and you should not use that as an excuse to avoid an attempt to quit smoking: the health benefits of quitting smoking will begin the very day you will stop.

Begin to build up your willpower before you actually have your last cigarette. Your willpower will become your most important tool in quitting. In fact, it's very unlikely that you will be successful without it. The first thing you should do is spend some time thinking of the reasons you want to quit smoking. Do some research do learn about the health benefits of quitting, for both yourself and the people around you. The most encouraging step you can take is to do some math and write down some figures for the amount of money you'll be able to save by not buying cigarettes. Then think of how you'll use that money for. Will it be a trip to celebrate? A nice dinner in a fancy restaurant?

Once your willpower is built up, it's time to have your last cigarette. You first need to understand that the human body is extremely resilient if your want to keep your spirits up. However, bear in mind that your health will improve as soon as you stop smoking - and I mean literally. Only 8 hours after your last cigarette, oxygen levels and carbon monoxide levels in your blood stream will go back to what they're supposed to. Did you know that you statistically reduce your chance of a heart attack merely 24 hours after your last cigarette? Furthermore, after only 48 hours of smoking your last cigarette, your sense of smell and taste will improve as your nerve endings will start growing.

In order to keep your willpower up, think of the longer-term benefits to quitting smoking as you continue to stay smoke free: your lung power will begin to increase after only 2 weeks and will continue to do so over time. Of course, other aspects of your health will improve in various ways continuously. I think that the ultimate motivator should lie in the knowledge that 15 years after quitting smoking, your risk of death is almost identical as someone who has never smoked. Don't you think that this illustrates remarkably well how the human body's can restore itself.

There's no doubt that developing a concrete action plan to quit smoking will increase tremendously your chances of success. What is crucial in this process is for you to understand that your willpower play an important role and that planning weeks ahead before you attempt to quit smoking will help you build up your willpower. Once you've quit smoking you have to keep this willpower strong, and to achieve thisHealth Fitness Articles, always remind yourself of the many benefits to your health you will be privy to the second after butting out that last cigarette.

    Quitting Smoking - Using Thoughts

We are well aware of the consequences of smoking. Still, we are unable to quit it. The cause for unable to quit smoking is the addiction of nicotine, along with the weak determination. A firm determination can make one able to leave this addiction of nicotine far behind. You only need to play certain mind games, as we all know that mind controls the body.

There are a few examples of mind games. For Instance, you have decided to quit smoke, but your decision is not firm. You have the habit to smoke with your friends. Before meeting them, your mind has already started working. You would find it tough to sit there without smoking. You would start feeling miserable and weak. You will become frustrate by these thoughts. Finally, you will start smoking. One can easily conclude that mind was the only thing that had prompted you in taking up smoking again.

On the contrary, you can avoid this situation. It only needs a little diversion of your mind. If you divert your mind on some other thing then surely you can help yourself. Along with the diversion, it need positive outlook on quitting smoking. Never feel that life will be miserable without smoking, or it is impossible to quit smoke.

Now, handle the same situation in this manner. You are going to meet your friends. Your mind will start working as usual. However, try to think positively. You should consider it big achievement, if you do not smoke with your friends. Never feel that life would be miserable, if you have not smoked. On the contrary, think that you are blessing a healthy life to you, as well as your family. You are able to breathe fresh air, after quitting smoking.

If you are unable to resist the temptation at your friend's place then do not go there. It would be better for you to avoid that place. Try to do something creative that will divert your mind completely.

Think about your kids. Take your family for a long drive. The quality time that you spent with them was more precious then wasting it by smoking with your friends. You will find that you were actually making yourself a fool by indulging in smoking activity.

Whenever your urge for smoke grows, only think about its bad effects upon you. The smoke has made you its slave. But, you have to overcome this slavery and quit smoking at any cost, as smoking is costing you a lot.

    The Psychology of Quitting Smoking

Many experts believe smoking is only about 10% physical addiction and a whopping 90% psychological addiction. Your body will recover fairly quickly from nicotine withdrawals (the worst symptoms usually abate in three days or less), but your psychological dependency on cigarettes can be much more difficult to defeat.

One way to combat this is to do a bit of self-analysis before giving up cigarettes.

Make a list with two columns. Label column one "Why I Started Smoking" and label column two "Why I Want To Quit Smoking."

In column one, list all the reasons you can remember as to why you started smoking in the first place. Was it peer pressure? Rebellion? Did you think it made you look cool? Did it make you feel like a grown-up? Really try to remember the exact reasons why you started smoking and write them all down.

Now look over that list. Do any of those reasons still apply in your life today? Probably not.

If you're like most people, you will see that your reasons for becoming a smoker are no longer valid, are often just silly, and are easily outweighed by the risks to your health and your family's well-being.

So let's move on to column two... Why do you want to quit smoking?

This one may seem obvious, but it can be a bit tricky. You really need to take some time and think hard about this. Don't just list the obvious health reasons. You've been reading the Surgeon General's warnings for years with little effect, so you need to come up with reasons that truly have meaning for you.

The things most people write down will NOT help you quit smoking...

    - I don't want to get lung cancer.
    - I don't want to have a heart attack or a stroke.
    - I'd like to live long enough to see my grandchildren grow up.

Those are all good reasons to quit smoking, certainly... but they deal in "possibilities" rather than in specifics.

Sure you MIGHT get lung cancer, you MIGHT have a heart attack or a stroke, you MIGHT die young and miss out on seeing your grandchildren grow up...

...or you MIGHT NOT! You're not likely to break a strong psychological addiction based on what MIGHT happen. Your mind will work hard to convince you that it won't happen to you! Instead, list health problems that you are already experiencing.

Your list should point out things in your life that you are actively unhappy about and are STRONGLY MOTIVATED to change. In order to break your psychological addiction, you need an arsenal of new thoughts and desires that are stronger than your desire to smoke!

Here are the types of things you want to put in column two...

Why Do I Want To Quit Smoking?

    1. Health Reasons

    - I get so out of breath when I exert myself even a little bit. Just vacuuming the house makes me pant and gasp.

    - My feet are always cold. This could be due to high blood pressure and poor circulation associated with smoking.

    - I have a nasty wet cough and I have to blow my nose way too often. Mucus build-up is the body's reaction to all the toxins and chemicals in cigarette smoke and could be a precursor to serious respiratory disease. Even if I don't get cancer, I don't want to be one of those people who has to tote oxygen bottles around everywhere.

    - I'm always tired. Could it be that my body is using up all its energy trying to eliminate the toxins and chemicals from cigarettes?

    2. Vanity Reasons

    - Smoking causes premature aging and drying of the skin. I don't want to look like a wrinkled up old prune!

    - My fingers, fingernails and teeth are all tobacco stained. Disgusting! How embarrassing.

    - When I get on the elevator after a smoke break at work, everyone wrinkles their nose and tries to edge away from me because I reek of cigarette smoke. I feel like a pariah. It's embarrassing to always be the big "stinker" on the elevator. I feel like I have no self-control.

    - My breath is awful. Kissing me must be like kissing an ashtray. I spend a fortune on breath mints.

    3. Financial Reasons

    - If I save all the money I used to spend on cigarettes, I'll have enough to take a vacation in Cancun (or some other warm tropical place) every winter!

    - I could use the money to pay off my credit cards!

    - I could donate money to my favorite charity or sponsor a child. My cigarette money could make the world a better place!

    4. Family Reasons

    - My family can stop worrying about me.

    - My spouse will have to find something new to nag me about. Just kidding, honey!

    - My children will be proud of me and (hopefully) they'll never start smoking themselves, having seen firsthand what a nasty destructive habit it is.

    5. Cleanliness Reasons

    - The walls used to be white. Now they're a nasty dirty-looking brown. I need to repaint... again!

    - I stink, my car stinks, my house stinks, everything I own reeks of cigarette smoke. I can't even lend a book to a non-smoking friend because they can't stand the smell of smoke permeating the pages!

Do you see yourself in any of the items listed? You may have many more reasons of your own. Find as many compelling and emotion reasons to quit smoking as you can think of and write them all down.

If you can re-train your mind to think of smoking as a silly and self-destructive thing to do, then you're almost sure to succeed. And if you need something to do with your hands... try knitting!

Their are several medications available for quitting smoking habit. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the following medications. However any medication should be taken only after it is prescribed by a qualified physician. The medications are - Bupropion SR. Nicotine gum Nicotine inhaler Nicotine nasal spray Nicotine patch Nicotine lozenge

Out of the above, the Nicotine gum and the patch are available over the counter. Others are available by prescription only. But its good to consult a physician before taking it. In this article I'm going to talk about nicotine patches.

Nicotine Patch Nicotine patches are another way to quit smoking. Patches are applied directly to the skin; each applied at an interval of 24 hours. There are a variety of different patches each with different content level of Nicotine. Nicotine patches are available only if prescribed by a qualified physician. They should exactly be as used as per the prescription. Over dosage or any experimentation with the application area of patches should be avoided. The patch should be applied on upper arm, upper area of chest or the hip. The area should not be oily or very hairy (preferably hairless). If required shave off the hair in the area. The area should be kept clean and dirt free. Replace the patch if it falls off the skin. The patch should be wore for about 24 hours. Never wear 2 patches (though they might be on different areas of body) at a time. That would equal to over dosage. This treatment takes anywhere from a month or five months depending upon your ability to resist the urge to smoke. The strength of the patch applied should gradually be brought down. Also the frequency of usage should be gradually brought down. Like in case of any other remedy, Patches may cause stomach upset, irritation or dizziness. If this continues, consult your doctor. Also consult your doctor immediately if u feels breathing problems or chest pain or any similar problems. Remember, if you follow the treatment religiously for about 5 months, you can get rid of the dangerous smoking habit for a lifetime.

A Simple Exercise For Quitting Smoking

This exercise to help you quit smoking is one that I have used with success. It is an adaptation of a general method for breaking bad habits or addictions. Unlike many other stop smoking help methods, this is meant to be used over a period of days, weeks or however much time it takes for you to stop smoking. In the beginning you should use it while you are smoking, but mainly when you are about to light a cigarette.

The exercise is very simple, but you have to do it consistently. It can be done wherever you are and in all kinds of situations when you smoke.

You light up a cigarette and start smoking. After a while you suddenly crush the cigarette against the ashtray and stop. Just stop and continue with the other activities you were doing.

You will probably light up a new cigarette after a while, and you should do the same as you did before; stop smoking and throw your nasty cigarette away and never look at it again.

Every time you light up a cigarette and start smoking repeat this act. Each time you light a cigarette, shorten the time it takes to put it out. After a while you should notice that while lighting the cigarette you will put it out without smoking it at all. Continue this exercise as long as you find necessary, which means until you have stopped smoking.

Give this stop smoking exercise a chance; at least try it for a week, it can't damage you. It will only be an expensive habit that you are about to break. It is important to associate as many positive things as possible to being a non-smoker. Before you start this exercise think about it and write down all the good things you associate with not smoking. Also try to find out what you can do to substitute the short term gratification of smoking and replace it with an activity of even greater and long term gratification as non smokers have found to do. As a non-smoker you will find that life can be a more healthier and wonderful gift.

    Voordelen

    * Je slaapt veel  beter.
    * Je hebt minder last van hoofdpijn.
    * Je rokershoest verdwijnt.
    * Je omgeving heeft geen last meer en ze roken niet meer mee.

    Stoppen? Zorg dan voor Afleiding

    • Voorkom stresssituaties die je aanzetten tot meer eten.
afl eidends doen, bijvoorbeeld: strijken, in bad gaan,

    voeding is.
    extra snoep in huis.
