    Gamer is een interessante actie-thriller over een actueel onderwerp. De film speelt zich af in de nabije toekomst, waar de mens inmiddels het vermogen en de technologie heeft om via de geest controle te krijgen over andere mensen. Dit wordt toegepast in een populaire online game, waar miljoenen gebruikers kunnen inloggen om hun fantasiën uit te spelen. Door manipulatie van de geest heeft gamen een nieuwe dimensie gekregen, waarbij mensen nu niet spelen met een pixelig poppetje, maar met een mens van vlees en bloed.

    Kable (Gerard Butler) is zo iemand. Hij is een superster en cultheld die zich begeeft in de game "Slayers", een spel bedacht door biljonair Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). Hij wordt bestuurd door Simon, een jonge populaire gamer die altijd van zijn tegenstanders weet te winnen. Het is Kable's doel om lang genoeg te overleven om uiteindelijk het spel te kunnen verlaten, zijn familie te bevrijden, achter zijn ware identiteit te komen, en om de mensheid te redden van Castle's technologie.
