Donald McNichol Sutherland (Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, 17 juli 1935) is een Canadees acteur. Hij won voor zijn bijrol in de televisiefilm Citizen X (1995) zowel een Golden Globe als een Emmy Award en vulde zijn prijzenkast in 1998 aan met een Satellite Award voor Without Limits. Voor zijn bijrol in Path to War won hij in 2003 een tweede Golden Globe.

Sutherland studeerde in Toronto. Op zijn veertiende kreeg hij zijn eerste baantje, door te werken als parttime radioverslaggever voor CKBW Radio in Bridgewater. In Toronto werd hij van de universiteit geschorst nadat hij een wasbak uit het raam had gegooid. Sutherland vertrok hierna naar Londen en volgde daar een opleiding aan de Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Vanaf de jaren '60 verwierf hij enige bekendheid als acteur in horrorfilms en thrillers.

Sutherlands doorbraak kwam met The Dirty Dozen en Robert Altman's film M*A*S*H. Met Jane Fonda co-produceerde hij F.T.A., een film die zich vrij expliciet uitsprak tegen de Vietnamoorlog.

Sutherland trouwde in 1990 met de Franse actrice Francine Racette, zijn derde echtgenote. Eerder was hij gehuwd met Lois Hardwick (1959-66) en met actrice Shirley Douglas (1966-70). Met Douglas kreeg hij in 1966 tweeling Rachel en Kiefer Sutherland. Laatstgenoemde volgde in zijn vaders voetsporen als acteur en won evenals hem zowel een Golden Globe als een Emmy Award. Sutherland kreeg later met Racette nog zoons Roeg (1974), Rossif (1978) en Angus (1979).
