Tony Curtis is een Amerikaans acteur.Hij werd geboren onder de naam Bernard Schwartz in de Bronx, een wijk in New York. Zijn ouders, Emanuel Schwartz en Helen Klein, waren Joodse immigranten uit Hongarije. Zijn opvoeding hield niet veel in. Hij groeide op in de straat, waar hij ook aan drugs verslaafd raakte.

De Tweede Wereldoorlog begon voor hem (en zijn joodse vriendjes) al vele jaren vóór 1941: in de arme buurt van Manhattan waar hij woonde waren groepen Duitse jongens (toen ook al: skinheads) die jacht op joden maakten: weg met de jew bastards, weg met de grootneuzen, de moordenaars van Jezus. Tijdens zomerkampen werden hij en zijn vriendjes al overvallen door nazi's met hakenkruisvlaggen, die predikten dat joden 'binnenstebuiten gekeerde negers' waren.

Schwarts' ouders trouwden in 1924) en leerden nooit goed Amerikaans. Zijn jongere broertje bleek schizofreen (hij stierf later in een inrichting) en Curtis concludeert achteraf dat zijn moeder daar ook aan geleden moet hebben: ze was een soort Jekyll en Hyde-moeder.
Na de wereldoorlog profiteerde Schwarts (hij diende bij de marine) van de G. I. Bill, die gedemobiliseerde militairen het recht gaf op kosten van de staat te mogen studeren. Hij koos drama, en kreeg, mooi als hij was, snel een contract in Hollywood, ingelijfd dus bij die grote groep hopefuls die op dé kans loerden. Hij kreeg overdag spraak-, dans- en schermlessen en gaf zelf, op eigen initiatief, kuslessen, want hij besefte heel goed in sexluilekkerland te zijn gekomen. 'Wij waren de elite,' zegt hij over de jongens die het maakten (Rock Hudson, Kirk Douglas, Jeff Chandler), in tegenstelling tot de anderen die het níét lukte en die verdwenen.

Tony Curtis' carrière werd verder gepland: cowboyfilms, piratenfilms, Arabische films. Beroemd is zijn optreden in Son of Ali Baba (1952), waar hij staande op een heuvel tegen Piper Laurie moest zeggen: 'Yonder lies the castle of my father, the caliph.' Ondanks de spraaklessen kwam het er in zijn dikke Newyorks ridicuul uit: 'Yondah lies the castle of my faddah' - er werd zó om gelachen dat het een mijlpaaltje is in de Hollywood-geschiedenis, en Curtis is er zijn hele leven, tot in de huidige talkshows toe, mee gepest.

Zijn huwelijk met Janet Leigh in 1951 verhoogde zijn populariteit: ze waren de Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor van die dagen. Na Frank Sinatra was Curtis dé held der jonge vrouwen. Ze boden zich in grote hoeveelheden aan en omdat dat thuis niet meer kon, kwamen de jongensjaren terug: sex in de auto, sex stiekem in de kleedkamer - tot hij van een vriend een appartement mocht lenen, als die tenminste niet thuis was. Dat leidde tot verwikkelingen: de columnist Sidney Skolsky ontdekte dat Tony's vriend vaak uren in zijn auto voor zijn eigen flat zat te wachten tot Curtis klaar was - en kreeg toen het idee voor de film The apartment. Curtis claimde - als boetedoening maar ook uit ijdelheid - bij de regisseur de rol van de appartementbezitter, maar Billy Wilder vond Curtis veel te knap van uiterlijk en koos Jack Lemmon, die er een oscarnominatie aan overhield.

Maar op den duur wou Hollywood (ondanks een paar indrukwekkende rollen) hem niet meer. hij zoekt zijn heil in Europa. onplezierige voorvallen in Duitsland (hij was inmiddels met het Duitse actricetje Christine Kaufman getrouwd - en er waren daar mensen die dat die jood niet vergaven), op het Londense vliegveld gepakt met marihuana, veel te veel drank, de televisieserie The persuaders, met Roger Moore, en dan, in 1974: de cocaïne.In 1984 liet hij zich, na familieberaad, opnemen in het bekende Betty Ford Center.

Curtis is verschillende keren hertrouwd en leeft nu gelukkig. Hij heeft uit verschillende huwelijken kinderen (o.a. Jamie Lee Curtis en hij adopteerde er ook 2). Nu houdt hij zich voornamelijk bezig met schilderen.
