    Ralph McQuarrie is overleden

    Gisteren heeft de wereld van fantasy en science fiction een legende verloren: Ralph McQuarrie is namelijk overleden. De designer rolde bij toeval in het filmvak. In de vroege jaren '60 kreeg namelijk hij werk bij Boeing als technische illustrator en vond hij werk om animatie-elementen te ontwerpen voor nieuwsberichten van CBS News over het Apollo-ruimteprogramma.

    McQuarrie zal vooral bekend zijn om zijn werk als visueel ontwerper van de Star Wars-films. Hij is verantwoordelijk voor de look van de meeste locaties en ruimteschepen in George Lucas' filmserie.

    "I just did my best to depict what I thought the film should look like, I really liked the idea,” vertelde hij ooit over dat werk. “I didn't think the film would ever get made. My impression was it was too expensive. There wouldn't be enough of an audience. It's just too complicated. But George knew a lot of things that I didn't know."



    Vanzelfsprekend werkte de designer later ook aan The Empire Strikes Back en Return of the Jedi. Aan de prequel-films weigerde hij mee te werken, aangezien hij het tijd vond voor nieuwe artiesten om hun kans te krijgen. Naast Star Wars werkte McQuarrie samen met Steven Spielberg aan E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind en Jurassic Park.

    McQuarrie werd 82 jaar.
