Each year, the Mold Making and Mold Design Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers looks for award recipients for its two awards: Mold Maker of the Year and Mold Designer of the Year. 3.Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60% ) to decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside; using air conditioners and de-humidifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning.
4.Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
5.If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
6.Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
7.Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
8.Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
9.In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
10.Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

How to Identify the Cause of a Mold and Mildew Problem.
Mold and mildew are commonly found on the exterior wall surfaces of corner rooms in heating climate locations.
An exposed corner room is likely to be significantly colder than adjoining rooms, so that it has a higher relative humidity (RH) than other rooms at the same water vapor pressure.
If mold making and mildew growth are found in a corner room, then relative humidity next to the room surfaces is above 70%.
However, is the RH above 70% at the surfaces because the room is too cold or because there is too much moisture present (high water vapor pressure)?
The amount of moisture in the room can be estimated by measuring both temperature and RH at the same location and at the same time. Suppose there are two cases. In the first case, assume that the RH is 30% and the temperature is 70oF in the middle of the room. The low RH at that temperature indicates that the water vapor pressure (or absolute humidity) is low. The high surface RH is probably due to room surfaces that are "too cold." Mold sources is the dominating factor, and control strategies should involve increasing the temperature at cold room surfaces.
In the second case, assume that the RH is 50% and the temperature is 70oF in the middle of the room. The higher RH at that temperature indicates that the water vapor pressure is high and there is a relatively large amount of moisture in the air. The high surface RH is probably due to air that is "too moist." Humidity is the dominating factor, and control strategies should involve decreasing the moisture content of the indoor air.
There are many rules for designing molds. These rules and standard practices are based on logic, past experience, convenience, and economy. For designing, mold making, and molding, it is usually of advantage to follow the rules. But occasionally, it may work out better if a rule is ignored and an alternative way is selected. In this text, the most common rules are noted, but the designer will learn only from experience which way to go. The designer must ever be open to new ideas and methods, to new molding and mold materials that may affect these rules.
There are other parting (or split) lines than those that separate the cavity and core halves. These are the separating lines between two or more cavity sections if the cavity must separate (split or retract) to make it possible to eject the molded product as the mold opens for ejection.
Figure 4.4 shows simple ``up and down'' molds. The machine clamping force holds the mold closed at the P/L. (In (B) and (C), the parting line could be anywhere on the outside of the rim, between the two positions shown, but is preferred as in (B).) In (D) we must consider the injection pressure p (as shown with small arrows inside the cavity space), which will force the two cavity halves in the direction of the the large arrow m. This force also exists in the other examples, but is resisted by the strength of the solid cavity walls, which do slightly expand during injection and then return to their original shape once the injection cycle is completed.

4.4 The Parting Line 13 contain these forces and provide the necessary preload to prevent opening of the mold during injection. These side cores, or split portions of the cavities, can represent just small parts of the cavity, or even only small pins to create holes in the side of the products, but they could also be sections molding whole sides o a product, as, for example, with beverage crates or large pails.

These molds are mounted in some type of machine that will open and close the mold, apply high pressure as needed as needed, and facilitate lilling the mold by external means. The plastic material is held under pressure in the mold until it hardens sufficiently to hold its shape after ejection.
In many cases these units take the form of automatic molding machines with completely self-contained pressure pumps, automatic facilities for heating the material, and timers to control the various operations and sensors to signal malfunctions.
Steam, hot water, oil, gas or clcctricity are used to heat the mold and maintain temperature control. The kind of heating or cooling to be used for a given job is governed by the means available and the character of the job.
Large compression molding plants find considerable economy in the use of steam. High melt temperature dies and molds are heated by electricity or gas. Injection molds are electrically or hot-oil heated or cold-water cooled.

The injection mold is essentially a closed mold (the mold is closed without any material in it). After the application of pressure to close the mold and hold it tightly clamped against injection pressure; the molten plastics material is forced into the closed cavity by a source of pressure other than that which caused the mold to close.
The melting of the plastics material in the injective machine cylinder is called plasticiziong. The runner clearly shows as the cross-bar in front of the operators left arm. One gate is indicated by his left thumb. The molten material passes through the runner and gates on its way into the cavity. The proint at which the molten plastics material passes from the runner into the cavity is called the gate.
You will note that we refer to "flowing into the cavity." This cavity means the space between the male section and the female section in to which the molten plastics will eventually form into the desired shape and detail. The point at which the core and cavity separate or move apart when the mold is opened is called the parting line.
The different manners in which the material can be introduced into the cavity through a gate or gates in various locations. Each location has its advantage and disadvantages. The proper choice of gating is one of the essential fundamentals of mold engineering that must be mastered by the mold designer.
