Als u het vorige artikel gelezen hebt dan worden nu de antwoorden gegeven op de vragen die rijzen over het waarom van piramiden, de vorming van metropolen rond de piramiden, de mensen die deze piramiden bouwden, de vorming van een religie. Dit zijn de piramiden van Teotihuacan in Mexico. Het is dezelfde geschiedenis als voor de Egyptische piramiden. Niettegenstaande de Egyptische piramiden grafmonumenten zijn geworden, was dit oorspronkelijk niet zo bedoeld. Het waren kalenders waarvan de stand van het Orion-stelsel en de ster Sirius van belang waren.

Wikipedia : Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan was een stad in het Dal van Mexico, in de huidige deelstaat Mexico, waar nu slechts ruïnes van overgebleven zijn. De stad heeft van ongeveer 150 voor Chr tot 700 na Chr bestaan en had op haar hoogtepunt zo'n 200.000 inwoners.

Teotihuacan was een stad waarin de grote bouwwerken allemaal een duidelijke eigen plaats hadden. Wie er in de stad woonde en hoe de inwoners leefden is tot op de dag van vandaag grotendeels een mysterie. Verschillende Mexicaanse indianenstammen claimen dat zij afstammelingen zijn van de inwoners. Sommigen vermoeden dat de bouwers van de stad een afspiegeling van het universum op aarde wilden maken.

Maanpiramide Beroemde overblijfselen zijn de zonnepiramide, de maanpiramide en de tempels van Quetzalcoatl* en Tlaloc* binnen deze citadel. De centrale avenue die door de stad loopt wordt de Avenue van de Doden genoemd. Rondom dit religieus-politieke centrum lagen uitgebreide woonwijken en wijken bestaande uit werkplaatsen.

*Quetzalcoatl is de gevederde slangegod van het Azteken. Hij was scheppings- en luchtgod. Hij was verbonden met de planeet Venus. Hij was ook de god van het Azteken priesterschap, kennis en wetenschap. Hij is de meest bekende Azteken godheid, maar ook van alle andere Mesoamerikaanse culturen zoals die van Teotihuacan.  Andere goden waren : Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca en Huitzilopochtli.

*Tlaloc is een belangrijke godheid voor de Azteken. Hij is de god van regen, vruchtbaarheid en water. Hij zorgde voor de instandhouding van leven, maar hij was ook gevreesd voor zijn hagel, donder en bliksem, en de inzet van het krachtige element water. Hij wordt geassocieerd met grotten, bronnen en bergen. Hij werd bekend door zijn kind-offers.

De piramiden van Gizeh versus deze van Teotihuacan

De piramide van de Zon en de Grote Piramide van Egypte zijn bijna aan elkaar gelijk in omtrek. De piramide van de Zon is bijna de helft van de hoogte van de Grote Piramide. Er is maar weinig verschil.

De basis van de Grote Piramide is 1.03 keer groter dan deze van de piramide van de Zon.

Pyramids were the ultimate symbol of wealth and might : we can built as big as the gods. But there was also another purpose : pyramids held the secrets to keep the city alive. The siting of the Pyramid of the Moon at the far end of the avenue was likewise done with such care that a sight-line directly over the top of the Pyramid of the Sun marks the meridian, thus allowing the priests of the city to fix the times of noon and midnight with complete accuracy.

This precise alignment is not a coincidence. The front of the pyramid points like a giant arrow to a location on the horizon once a year (August 13^th) on the exact spot a constellation called the 7 sisters appear on the horizon. This astronomical event signals the best time to plant crops, a good harvest meant prosperity, a bad one mass starvation. The survival of the city rested on accurately using the stars to keep track of time, and the pyramids were built to do just that. They wanted a city connected to the cosmos, for the entire life of the city. They never departed from the sacred design.

When the people looked up to the stars, moon, sun; they believed they were gazing at the gods themselves. And now the city was in perfect synchronicity with the daily paths, the deities. Good fortune should befall the land. For centuries it did.

What would begin as an astronomical observation developed over time into an elaborated ritual, into religion. In temples on top of the pyramids, the priest prayed for rain, for fertility. There was a lot at stake in having these rites conducted at the appropriate time. The priest scattered seeds at water, an offering to the gods.

It was a city aligned with the stars, and there were peaceful rituals. Peaceful ?

The Aztecs and the Mayas worshipped bloodthirsty Gods. Gods that demanded human blood. The city had been so different from other empires.

Nearly every wall was once covered with murals. While only fragments remain, they are revealing images of conflict and death. But most of the time they painted nature, mountains, trees, flowers, water. It was a lush garden of strange creatures who were magical. Have they created an earthly paradise or were the murals nothing more than fantasy ?

The answer lies hidden in the heart of the pyramids, in ancient bones that will finally reveal the true nature of Teotihuacan and might hold the key to why this supercity, so powerful in its glory will end up abandoned by the people who built it. Deep inside the city of pyramids is evidence of a very different Teotihuacan. It may not been as violent as the Maya or the Aztecs. It too has a dark and bloody past. Deep into the pyramid of the moon : human bones, scattered in disarray, emerging out of the dirt And this appears to be no normal area. The skeletons are decapitated, their arms are tied behind their backs. Something dark and violent took place here. The find doesn’t fit the image of a peaceful utopia.

The bones are in bad shape because unlike the Egyptians the Teotihuacans didn’t mummify their corpses. In the forensic lab they put the skull together of a man who died violently. They sacrificed him by tying him up, and hitting him at least twice. To preserve the success of the city of pyramids this man’s life would be offered to the gods.
