Tupac Shakur werd als Lesane Parish Crooks geboren in Brooklyn, NY, op 16 juni 1971. Toen hij nog klein was, veranderde zijn moeder, Afeni Shakur (een actief lid van de Black Panther beweging) zijn naam naar Tupac Amaru Shakur, naar een Inca-revolutionair: Tupac Amaru, wat zoveel betekent als "Blinkende Slang". "Shakur" komt dan weer uit het Arabisch en wil "dankbaar aan God" zeggen. In zijn kinderjaren noemde iedereen hem trouwens "de zwarte prins".
Toen hij 2 jaar oud was, werd zijn zus Sekyiwa geboren. De vader ervan, Mutulu Shakur, was een ook Black Panther. Hij werd, enkele maanden voor haar geboorte, veroordeeld tot 60 jaar cel voor een dodelijke auto- overval. Door het wegvallen van Mutulu, stond de familie Shakur voor zware tijden... Gelijk waarheen ze trokken - de Bronx, Harlem, daklozentehuizen... - was Tupac steeds van streek. "Ik herinner me nog dat ik steeds huilde. Het grootste probleem was dat ik nergens bij hoorde. Ik kwam van overal en heb dus nooit vrienden gehad waarmee ik op kon groeien."
Nog voor zijn twaalfde verjaardag, ontdekte Tupac zijn liefde voor acteren en het schrijven van liefdesliedjes en gedichten. Als een jonge tiener verhuisde de familie naar Baltimore, MD. Daar ging de jonge Tupac naar de "Baltimore School for the Performing Arts". Daar leerde hij acteren en ballet. Op deze school liet Tupac een enorme indruk op zijn leraren na en toonde hij zijn enorme capaciteiten. Spijtig genoeg kon hij zijn opleiding niet afwerken. Hij moest, samen met de volledige familie, verhuizen naar Oakland, CA. Het was toen dat Tupac begon, zoals hij later zelf zei, "met de verkeerde lui rond te hangen"
Toen hij 15 was, begon hij met rap: hij startte met het schrijven van teksten, liep met enorm veel lef en buitte zijn afkomst uit. Mensen uit kleinere steden vreesden immers de reputatie van de "Big Apple"; hij noemde zich MC New York en deed zich voor als echte "bad boy". Tupac werd al vlug opgemerkt en kon bij de rap groep Digital Underground aan de slag als danser.
Niet zo lang voor de groep succes kreeg, bracht Tupac, toen 20, zijn eerste solo-album uit. "2Pacalypse Now" was meteen een succes en bracht o.a. de hitsingles "Brenda's Got A Baby" en "Trapped". Zijn carriere als 2Pac vertok als een raket! Zijn uitzonderlijke talent bracht hem ook een rol in de film "Juice". Hij bracht dan in 1993 een tweede album uit: "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.", wat nog een groter succes werd dan de eerste. Songs als "Keep Ya Head Up" en "I Get Around" verkochten als zoete broodjes. Hij kreeg ook een rol in de film "Poetic Justice" (John Singleton), waarin hij, aan de zijde van Janet Jackson, de wereld duidelijk maakte dat muziek misschien niet zijn nummer 1 was...
In november 1994 werd Tupac 5 maal geschoten bij een overval (zie: 'Schietpartij 1994'). Hij herstelde op miraculeuze wijze en was de volgende dag al aanwezig op de uitspraak van een van de vele rechtszaken tegen hem. Terwijl hij in de gevangenis zat wegens vermeend sexueel misbruik, kwam een derde album in 1995: "Me Against The World" bracht hits als "Dear Mama" en "Can U Get Away" en was het eerste album dat op 1 kwam in de hitlijsten terwijl de artiest in de cel zat. Tijdens zijn opsluiting speelde Tupac ook nog in de film "Above The Rim". Terwijl zijn "Me Against The World" platinum haalde, werd Tupac voor ongeveer 1.4 miljoen dollar uit de gevangenis gehaald door Death Row Records. Na zijn vrijlating beantwoordde hij de inmiddels gestegen kritiek met de schitterende "All Eyez On Me". Zijn zesde album verkocht reeds meer dan 7 miljoen keer en werd de eerste dubbel-cd in de hip-hop wereld. Intussen speelt hij in de film "Gang Related".
Op weg naar een anti-geweld bijeenkomst, wordt Tupac op 6 september 1996 door onbekenden neergeschoten in een drive-by shooting op The Strip in Las Vegas. Na een week van strijd, waarbij o.a. een long werd verwijderd, sterft Tupac Shakur op 13 september om 16u03 als gevolg van zijn verwondingen. De daders blijven tot op vandaag nog steeds onbekend. Het lijkt er sterk op dat de politie en regering er weinig aan doen om dit te veranderen...
Na zijn dood brengt Death Row Records een zevende cd uit: "The Don Kiluminati: The 7 Day Theory". Door de cover (Tupac afgebeeld als Jezus aan het kruis) en de naamsverandering naar Makaveli, geloven sommigen dat 2Pac nog steeds leeft. In 1997 wordt "Gridlock'd" vrijgegeven. Het is de laatste film waarin Tupac acteerde, dit keer aan de zijde van Tim Roth. In datzelfde jaar bengt zijn moeder de achtste cd "R U Still Down? [Remember Me]" uit. Het bevat onuitgebracht materiaal van de periode 1993-94. 2 jaar later brengt Amaru Records in samenwerking met Interscope en een zwalpend Death Row Records een "Greatest Hits" uit. De dubbelcd bevat ook 4 nieuwe songs, waaronder "Changes" en "Unconditional Love". Intussen hebben de is nog een cd uitgebracht: "Still I Rise" is een cd van 2Pac samen met The Outlawz. "Baby Don't Cry" en "The Good Die Young" zijn de bekendste. In 2001 wordt de dubbelcd "Until The End Of Time" uitgebracht met als grootste hits het gelijknamige nummer, met als inspiratie "Broken Wings" van Mr. Mister, en "Letter 2 My Unborn", een herwerking van Michael Jacksons "Liberian Girl. In 2002, 6 jaar na zijn dood, wordt nog maar eens een dubbelcd op de markt gebracht: "Better Dayz" doet, mede door de outro op de plaat, weer vragen oprijzen of Tupac wel echt dood is... Hoedanook: RIP Tupac!

Op 6 september ging 2Pac naar Suges huis, ten zuidoosten van de stad, waar er een kort feestje was. Daarna vertrok hij naar naar het MGM Grand Hotel om het gevecht tussen Mike Tyson en Bruce Seldon te volgen. Na het gevecht ging hij backstage en omhelsde Tyson.Om 20.45 was er een incident tussen tupac en orlando in 'Grand Garden' van het hotel. Even later kwam de crew van DRR hulp bieden. Er was slechts een bodyguard bij de crew. Dit incident werd volledig vastgelegd door een bewakingscamera. De security van het hotel stopte het gevecht, Orlando werd opgepakt en meegenomen voor ondervraging. Om 8.55 vertrok Tupac terug naar het hotel.Hij ging naar de wagen van Hammer en vertelde hem over het incident. Hammer stelde er enkele vragen over en zei dat hij er zich geen zorgen hoefde over te maken.Terug in het hotel trok hij andere kleren aan en begaf zich naar Suges huis. Ze waren klaar voor het feest in 'Club 662' waar Pac ging optreden. Pac wou met z'n Hummer rijden, maar Suge wilde dat hij met hem meereed omdat hij nog enkele dingen wou bespreken. Twee uur later vertrokken ze in Suges zwarte BMW 750 model 96 met getinte ruiten. Een entourage van tien auto's volgde hen. Toen moest de hele stoet met auto's stoppen voor een stoplicht, de rechterstrook was vrij. Om 11.15 verschijnt er opeens een witte cadillac naast ze en opent het vuur, ze raken de BMW 13 keer, Een kogel ketste af op pac's dijbeen en doorboorde zijn long. Hij werd ook in de hand en de borst geraakt. Suge had alleen een vleesschot in zijn nek. Suge maakte een U-bocht en reed met hoge snelheid westwaarts, richting Las Vegas Boulevard, weg van het dichtstbijzijnde ziekenhuis. Suge verklaarde achteraf dat hij tegen Pac gezegd had dat hij hem naar het ziekenhuis zou brengen. Maar Pac had geantwoord: "Moet ik naar het ziekenhuis? Jij bent degene die in het hoofd geraakt is!" 2 agenten haalden Suge in toen hij vastzat in het verkeer. De agenten vroegen om een ambulance. Ze namen Pac uit de wagen en legden hem op de brancard. Hij klaagde steeds dat hij geen adem kon halen. Op weg naar het ziekenhuis verloor Tupac 22 ons bloed. Toen men hem de spoedafdeling binnenbracht, zei hij: "Ik ga dood." Zijn toestand was nu heel kritiek. Hij had verscheidene verwondingen: een schotwonde in de rechterkant van de borst en een hemothorax, een in de rechterdij met de kogel voelbaar in de onderbuik. Een van zijn rechtervingers was door een kogel gebroken. Hij werd de herstelkamer binnengereden en z'n toestand werd gestabiliseerd. Toch ging hij in de coma. hierna volgden enkele operaties, zijn rechterlong werd verwijderd ivm bloedingen. Vrijdag 13 september probeerden de dokters Tupac verschillende keren te reanimeren, tot Afeni zei dat het genoeg was. Hij stierf om 04u03 in de namiddag op de intensive care afdeling. Wel een paar vage feiten rondom deze gebeurtenis: tupac droeg geen kogelvrijvest wat hij anders toch altijd om had, tupac wou op de achterbank springen maar suge hield hem tegen en dus ving tupac de kogels op (immers death row was tupac nog geld schuldig, paar miljoen) ooggetuigen schenen 4 mannen hebben zien uitstappen, uit de witte caddie, en ze schoten hun magazijnen helemaal leeg)

Hammer stelde er enkele vragen over en zei dat hij er zich geen zorgen hoefde over te maken.Terug in het hotel trok hij andere kleren aan en begaf zich naar Suges huis. Ze waren klaar voor het feest in 'Club 662' waar Pac ging optreden. Pac wou met z'n Hummer rijden, maar Suge wilde dat hij met hem meereed omdat hij nog enkele dingen wou bespreken. Twee uur later vertrokken ze in Suges zwarte BMW 750 model 96 met getinte ruiten. Een entourage van tien auto's volgde hen. Toen moest de hele stoet met auto's stoppen voor een stoplicht, de rechterstrook was vrij. Om 11.15 verschijnt er opeens een witte cadillac naast ze en opent het vuur, ze raken de BMW 13 keer, Een kogel ketste af op pac's dijbeen en doorboorde zijn long. Hij werd ook in de hand en de borst geraakt. Suge had alleen een vleesschot in zijn nek. Suge maakte een U-bocht en reed met hoge snelheid westwaarts, richting Las Vegas Boulevard, weg van het dichtstbijzijnde ziekenhuis. Suge verklaarde achteraf dat hij tegen Pac gezegd had dat hij hem naar het ziekenhuis zou brengen. Maar Pac had geantwoord: "Moet ik naar het ziekenhuis? Jij bent degene die in het hoofd geraakt is!"
