Nou moe, man toch. Eergisteren, zondag, duurde het enkele uren vooraleer het laatste bot in mijn lijf was opgewarmd van de cross in Hoogerheide. In één woord: memorabel, die cross, een beetje misschien omdat het een veldrit was die alle extreme uit renners haalde (nog nooit renners een toch niet onoverkomelijke afzink te voet zien aflopen), maar vooral omwille van de apocalyptische weersomstandigheden. Alsof God zijn trukendoos opentrok van bar halfslachtig winterse tempeesten. Windvlagen, doorspekt met nu eens striemende hagel, maar in die hoeveelheid dat je eigenlijk makkelijk kan spreken van hagelstortbuien, dan weer de ene zware gordijn koude regen na de andere. Nauwelijks boven het vriespunt ook. De profs waren nog maar een twintig minuten aan het rijden toen ik een straal druppels uit mijn mouw kon schudden simpelweg door een zwaaibeweging te maken.
Enfin, uren dus om op te warmen en nog geen dag later steek ik mezelf in winterkleding om op pad te trekken in de vrieskou rond middernacht. Neen, ik heb geen Floyd Landis fixatie of adoratie, maar feit is dat s avonds laat fietsen enkele enorme voordelen heeft: om te beginnen zal ik daarna nooit werken, maar met een glas rode wijn in bad kruipen, eventueel met een tweede glas nog even voor de buis of achter een boek; er is op dat moment ook bijna geen kat nog op de baan. Ik passeer enkele grotere provinciale wegen, altijd met fietspad, maar ook nauwelijks verlichte achterafwegeltjes en ik kom hooguit een auto per vijf minuten tegen. Een bijna surrealistische rust in autoland Vlaanderen. Het donker heeft ook niet alleen iets geborgen, het is ook iets geheel eigen, je bent ook zowat de enige gek dan die dit doet. En ik hoef me overdag niet druk te maken dat ik weer eens niet heb kunnen fietsen.
Ik hou het echter beperkt vandaag, op en af naar het park van Boom, enkele stroken vals plat en aardig wat noordoostenwind. Op de mp3-speler is het live-optreden van Pearl Jam in het Sportpaleis nu onderhand wel zijn stuwingsvermogen kwijt. Straks nog enkele nieuwe nummers erop zetten. Ik onthou echter, toch alweer een dikke 20km, op een paar intensieve duurprikkels na continu aan 120 tpm op mijn 39*23 en geen slecht gevoel.
Het was in die mate druk op het werk op dinsdag dat ik ondanks het erg late uur bij thuiskomst toch nog even ga lopen. Een luxe trouwens, want het is vanuit Burlington Road recht naar de Thames, daar de rivier even volgen en terug. Mijn geijkt klein toertje, 18min 41 seconden. Niet slecht. Ik zou het, analoog met Peter Vervoort zijn schema's, kunnen inschrijven in mijn logboek als equivalent aan een dik half uur fietsen. Dat zou gisteren en vandaag samen 40km maken. Er is nog werk aan de winkel.
De doelen voor dit jaar zijn nochtans duidelijk, hoewel pas sinds dit weekend. De winterperiode is voorbij. Ik heb niet echt stilgezeten, maar geraakte in de voorbije periode niet eens aan 140km per week, dus minimaal onderhoud is het maximum dat je het kan benoemen.
Begin april gaan we twaalf dagen op vakantie in Bandol, de groene Provencaalse kust en daar zou ik een eerste serieuze test willen doen op de Mont Caume, mijns inziens toch iets aantrekkelijker dan de Mont Faron. Twee weken later volgt de Antwerp Ten Miles, met zijn loopvoorbereiding ideaal voor verder gewichtsverlies. Een week daarna hopelijk L'Epervier in Cogolin, een cyclosportieve van 170km voor mijn verjaardag. Dan resten er mij nog mei en juni om nog gewicht te verliezen en me klaar te stomen voor de volgende vakantie, in Les Arcs. Zomer in de Alpen, toevallig als de Tour er passeert en rustdag houdt, maar vooral: de Col dIseran, bijna 2700m hoog en 47km lang klimmen, een droom. Idealiter zou ik twee weken later op tijd Alpe dHuez willen doen. Dan komen we langzamerhand de late zomer in en reageert mijn lichaam altijd positiever op mindere prikkels en schiet mijn conditie met horten vooruit. Een eerste Criquelion dan maar en dan zelf beginnen veldrijden met de Noorderkempen?
Voor Unibet.com wordt het eerste jaar als ProTourploeg vooral een kennismakingsronde en een overgangsjaar. Weg zijn de perikelen rond Frank Vandenbroucke en hopelijk met renners die betrokken zijn in de Fuentesaffaire (Quesada) of een te hoog hematocriet lieten optekenen (Dominguez). Ook voor Geert Omloop was er geen plaats meer. Hoewel de ex-nationaal kampioen in een zaak verwikkeld raakte van allerlei producten, werd hij hierin toch niet vervolgd. Of Unibet voorgoed verlost zal blijven van Quesada is een andere zaak, de Spaanse renner liet immers beslag leggen op een deel van de bankgarantie van Unibet omdat hij sinds het uitbreken van de zaak Fuentes niet meer werd betaald. Daarbovenop komen nog eens de klachten van andere organisatoren van kansspelen aan het adres van Unibet.com. Afwachten of dit jaar een easy ride gaat zijn op extrasportief vlak.
Vertrokken bij de ploeg zijn Kurt Van De Wouwer en Marco Serpellini, beiden op pensioen. Een ander, eerder opmerkelijk vertrek is dat van Johan Coenen, naar Chocolade Jacques, hij is uiteindelijk toch al enkele jaren op continentaal niveau één van de betere Belgen van het circuit, maar vorig seizoen een beetje aanmodderend en aan een nieuwe uitdaging toe.
Met een budget van 8 miljoen euro, een heuse structuur met manager Jacques Hanegraaf en vier ploegleiders (Hilaire Vanderschueren, Mathieu Hermans, Michel Lafis en Lucien Van Impe) wilt Unibet de sprong voorwaarts nemen. Als je de doorsnee uitslagen bekijkt van de renners van de huidige ploeg en dit de voorbije twee jaar en zo de lijn doortrekt, mag Unibet toch hopen op een drie toptien plaatsen in voormalige wereldbekerkoersen en nog eens drie in grote eendagswedstrijden. Een rit in een grote ronde en een enkele toptien in een niet al te kleine rittenwedstrijd. Daarnaast echter zal Unibet in veel kleinere wedstrijden vooraan te zien zijn, zoniet een stempel kunnen drukken.
Matteo Carrara, overgekomen van Lampre, tekende al voor een top tien in Milaan-SanRemo én de Ronde van Lombardije en wordt allicht uitgespeeld in alle mogelijke Italiaanse klassiekers en semi-klassiekers en dit met Marco Zanotti aan zijn zijde (in 05 nog winnaar van de Franco-Belge en dit jaar o.a. 4e in de GP Rik Van Steenbergen).
Een breder draagvlak is het smaldeel binnen de team met rappe mannen als Baden Cooke (6e in Parijs-Tours vorig jaar en 6e in Gent-Wevelgem in 05), Jimmy Casper (rit in de Tour vorig jaar en de GP Denain in 05), Jeremy Hunt (3e in Nokere, 2e in Dwars Door Vlaanderen), Gorik Gardeyn (2e in Zottegem en Putte-Kapellen vorig jaar en o.a. de GP Haribo in 05) en Arnaud Coyot (vorig jaar winnaar van de GP Haribo en in 05 10e in Parijs-Roubaix). Aangevuld met Markus Eichler die op een lager continentaal niveau (winnaar Ronde van Drenthe, de Nederlandse Parijs-Roubiax, in Lillers, Dourges en Elm, 3e in Bazel en 4e Nokere) vorig jaar een sterke indruk naliet, zal Unibet in gelijkaardige wedstrijden altijd degelijk voor de dag komen. Zeker als je weet dat ze hierin worden bijgestaan door sterke veteranen als Matthé Pronk en Erwin Thijs, de laatste vorig jaar nog goed voor drie overwinningen.
Een derde pijler van Unibet is het Russische duo oertalenten Alexander Khatuntsev en Sergey Kolesnikov. Beiden hebben op continentaal niveau al een jaar of drie kunnen roderen aan hoog niveau en zijn klaar voor de stap hoger. De 21-jarige Khatuntsev is meervoudig wereld- en Europees kampioen achtervolging, maar heeft naast die titels ook meerdere eindklassementen op zijn naam staan en wordt wel eens vergeleken met Popovych. De 20-jarige Kolesnikov behaalde ook een Europese titel bij de beloften, op de ploegenachtervolging in 2005 en haalde vorig jaar drie etappewedstrijden binnen, waaronder het Circuit des Ardennes. Zij worden allicht gesteund door mannen als een Pieter Jacobs, het 20-jarige talent (winnaar van de Alpenklassieker bij de juniors in 2004, 2e in Het Volk voor beloften in 2005 en 3e in de Ardens Pijl vorig jaar), Niels Scheuneman (oud-winnaar van de Zesbergenprijs, in 03, gebrand om de draad na een minder geslaagd 2006 terug op te pikken) en Laurens Ten Dam (in 2005 nog 3e in de Elektrotoer, maar nu nood aan enkele sterke uitslagen). Rouleur in dit smaldeel is de van Française des Jeux overgekomen Gustav Erik Larsson, Zweeds nationaal kampioen tijdrijden en met nog een hoop progressiemarge (hij nam vorig jaar deel an zowel Giro, 66e, als Tour, 105e).
Of de vierde pijler van Unibet werkelijk ook iets zal opbrengen valt nog af te wachten. José Rujano is nog maar 24, maar heeft al een grillige carriere achter de rug en was recent nog te licht bevonden bij QuickStep. De Venezolaan beperkt zich echter vooral tot uitschieters in de Ronde van Venezuela (en twee keer derde in een bergettape, het bergklassement en derde in de eindstand van de Giro in 2005), maar moet toch meer kunnen. Hij krijgt de van Discovery overgekomen Victor Hugo Pena naast zich, maar wat kan de 32-jarige Colombiaan nog? Zijn laatste overwinning, een etappe in de Vuelta, dateert ondertussen toch al van meer dan 2 jaar geleden. Vorig jaar was hij wel nog 9e in de Giro en mocht hij enkel dat herhalen met Rujano nog voor hem gerangschikt, dan zijn ze bij Unibet allicht al tevreden. Ook deel van dit smaldeel is de Spanjaard Luis Pasamontes, in 2005 bij zijn eerste grote ronde 28e in de Vuelta en vorig jaar 2e in de Ronde van Groot-Brittannië en 5e in de Ronde van Andalusië.
Resten er nog de jonge Pool Michal Golas, nationaal beloftenkampioen, de piepjonge Columbiaan Rigoberto Uran, in 2005 bij de junioren nationaal titelhouder op de weg en op de baan, de al even jonge Deen Troels Vinther, oud-winnaar van Liege-La Gleize en oud-nationaal kampioen Matthew Wilson, elke ProTourploeg moet toch zijn Australiër hebben, die dringend op zoek is naar de betere vorm, maar zelfs in mindere doen nog van waarde voor de ploeg is.
Ondertussen heeft de ploeg zich alvast laten zien, met een ritwinst in de Tour Down Under voor Baden Cooke en een 5e plaats in de eindstand voor Gustav Larsson. Ok, het is slechts de TDU, maar vraag maar eens aan Mark Renshaw waaraan hij zijn contractverlenging te danken heeft. Daarnaast hebben de witgroene mannen achter de schermen toch al een klein veldslagje gewonnen in de oorlog die ze dit jaar zullen moeten voeren als klein broertje binnen de ProTourploegen: ondanks initieel protest van de organisatoren van de Ruta Del Sol die eiste de opstelling van Carlos Garcia Quesada behoort Unibet nu toch tot de starters in Andalucia.
No, this is not the end of cycling. I will always carry strong feelings about the sport itself and whatever cheats may come out, at least they do come out and so many sports and common people are not even on that level.
The end only refers to the fact that despite the fairly low numbers of readers, the goal has been achieved and I am no longer acquired to made these silly writings public as they now have become a linear communication to someone inside the world of cycling itself.

Whether the race in Hamburg is a real classic is not even worth a discussion, but still: it is ProTour, former World Cup, hence rather much a big race.

More team overviews doping related but as our previous item (with the 5* rated Fuentes as the overall decisive element in the 06 Tour) already mentioned, the current developments already overtake the previous ones.
Is it just for ASO to not allow people like Ullrich, Sevilla, Basso and Mancebo to ride this year's Tour de France. Is the evidence that much waterproof, have the found bags of blood already been tested against their own? And why again does the press focus on the 58 riders only? Sure, the Tour is about the start, but surely there will be some high profile footballers involved as well! And what about the ones playing at the World Cup right now, in the end only 1 name out of 4 was a cyclist. But let's continue cycle-bashing. With some of the overall contenders already out of the way, a quick look at the current state of overall contenders clearly favours Valverde on the one hand and Discovery Channel on the other (provided they will not be linked to something else by an insider):
**** Popovych, Savoldelli, Valverde, Landis *** Vinokourov (although he might be the victim of his team's actions), Leipheimer, Cunego, Azevedo, Klöden ** Menchov (although he has been named by some sources as a Fuentes client as well), Karpets, Mayo, Simoni * Pereiro, Sastre, Hincapie, Casar, Garzelli, Garate, Rasmussen, Rogers, Kachechkin
The problem is that given their background (the teams they have been part of in the past, the fact that they are Spanish or have been riding in Spain before, one should keep a light reserves for the likes of Sastre (rode with Saiz before), Azevedo (ditto), Menchov, Karpets, Pereiro and certainly the Euskaltel bunch.
Given the fact that Spanish cycling needs a cleaner image and someone who they can put their hopes onto. One would think of Valverde in the first place, but don't underestimate the possibilities of Marchante and Luis Leon Sanchez Gil, the latter a member of Astana, true, but until now, not an implicated one.
The lowdown on the countdown - let the paranoia take over
As mentioned before, the Fuentes case will prove to be vital for the further development of the Tour. Should Astana be forced to withdraw, who is next? An overview.
AG2R Of Festina fame, Christophe Moreau maybe shouldn't have been hinting during the Dauphiné at the fact that French riders finish more closely overall because of the Fuentes case. In the end, he might very well have been the only one of the Festina 98 Tour team not to have tested positive on EPO, there were traces of amfetamines. José Luis Arrieta Lujambio was one of the many riders named in that other major scandal - the 2001 Giro - where he (then a member of iBanesto) was linked to doping fraud by using caffeine, but never got convicted or suspended.
Bouygues Telecom Of a similar Moreau-fate is Laurent Brochard, world champion of 97 and member of the Festina 98 Tour team, as is Didier Rous. The team has had the Unai Yus case and before they were Bouygues, Bernaudeau led the Brioches team (and Bonjour before that), where a certain Joseba Beloki was riding. A pretty far-fetched link with Saiz, but still. Even before Brioches times, Bernaudeau led the Bonjour team where a Christophe Bassons also was riding, allegedly the only non-doped rider of the Festina team. In his stories Bassons does not reserve a high esteem for Rous or Bernaudeau. The former called him a connard for not joining what was common, the latter tried to persuade Bassons' personal trainer to get some enhancing in the training. Gossip, stories and politics, for sure.
Caisse d'Epargne Aha, a Spanish team. Is VALV the codename for Alejandro Valverde and if so, to what extent was he involved? Florent Brard has been suspended before (and fired by Credit Agricole) as he tested positive for cortisone. However, it turned out his doctor forgot to include the use of some cortisone in his medical records. Which doesn't change the fact that he was on cortisone anyway! (Or like Voet, Bassons and some others testify: why need 100 to 300 drugs for a team of nine riders and why all the prescriptions and extensive medical records?). Oscar Pereiro and Vladimir Karpets are believed to be involved in the Fuentes case, but for the time being no confirmation whatsoever.
Cofidis Definitely one of the teams with the worst reputation (Mattan, Millar, Vandenbroucke, Casagrande...), Cofidis seems set for a clean sheet this year, or are they?
Credit Agricole A small note here as well: Patrice Halgand was a Festina rider in 98, but still in 99. Allegedly, he would be a clean rider in that team as well.
CSC Aha, big time. For starters, Bjarne Riis - of Gewiss reputation - remains mister sixty percent (allegedly 64!) and has had in his team people like Bo Hamburger before. Giovanni Lombardi - like José Luis Arrieta was down for possible suspension for caffeine at the 2001 Giro. Carlos Sastre has started his career with Manolo Saiz. With Julich, Zabriskie and Vandevelde there might be links with Armstrong and US Postal, but they are team links only.
Davitamon Well, they did have this machine to artificially simulate high altitude training not? And was a former team doctor not arrested recently? And did Christophe Brandt not get suspended for methadon (the use of which he always denied) during the 04 Tour (even though he qot acquitted later on)? Isn't Horner an American prefering Spain as his European base? All very smokey, or hardly actually.
Despite the purpose of this small blog really being a focus on the 06 Classics, the 06 Tour cannot go unnoticed.
With the team lists close to conclusion, here's the lowdown on this year's final Tour countdown.
***** Fuentes: the Spanish doctor is not the only culprit involved, but the case around him will be defining the Tour outcome. Either some riders will no longer perform on the level they used to in the recent past, either some riders might be lifted from their bikes (the finish in Spanish Pla Beret?) and taken to the police station.
**** With a slight preference because of the experience and the strong team, Jan Ullrich is the ultimate favorite. He has a strong and well-balanced team and everybody knows it is now or never again. That pressure might be hard should he struggle uphill, but there is always the 100+km of time trialling, especially the last one, which he should dominate. Surely, Ivan Basso should be tired over his Giro win, but in the end is one of the few contenders to actually being able to hurt Ullrich uphill. The pain will be easily reverted in time trials though, not Ivan's best ability.
*** Alejandro Valverde is the man to watch, will he be the ultimate surprise winner. If one man is able to do this, he is. But to what extent would he or his teammates be involved with the Fuentes case. Imagine a Caisse d'Epargne without people like Pereiro and Karpets (blind guessing btw). Floyd Landis was the main third man until his awful Dauphine and was his bad performance a hidden consequence of the Fuentes case or not. Should he be progressing according to plan, the same plan that helped him take the Tour of California, Georgia and Paris-Nice, he should be considered as a the strongest candidate for the podium. Should... Probably short-winged by his time trialling, Francisco Mancebo will end up fourth again. To name at least one of the Discovery boys in the 3* section, Yaroslav Popovych seems set to be the possible bet.
** But Savoldelli and even Azevedo could easily deserve a place here. Personally, I would rank Hincapie slightly under these two. However, with such an abondance of strong riders, Discovery can simply make the Tour peloton explode. Who is going to chase Hincapie when he attacks in the mountains? And imagine Popovych just sticks to whomever is best uphill of Ullrich and Basso and Azevedo and Savoldelli join a counterattack? Cadel Evans probably will be happy with an eight place again, although he might come close to fifth or sixth should he be able to win a stage and repeat his Tour de Suisse time trialling. Surely an uncertain factor by all means is Alexander Vinokourov. Probably in his last attempt to have a go at the overall, his past Tour cv shows how moments of unbeatable brilliance were followed by grey weaker ones. Possibly the best ally for Discovery guerilla tactics, he too, like Landis, was putting down a bad result in the Dauphine right after the Fuentes outbreak. How big will the involvement be? Vino comes from a completely different background compared with many Spanish riders, but in the end it was Saiz who got caught with the 60.000 euros and how many of his team will be left over after the Spanish judicial system has made the names of those involved official? Will he even be able to participate still with the team or will he be joining another team last minute? The extrasportive troubles and uncertainty will prove to be a burden and a pressure, but didn't an American use to thrive on negative impulses to take seven Tour victories in a row? Iban Mayo will be a strong man in the Pyrenees and possible on the Alpe as well, but his time trailling will fail him ending higher than say sixth or seventh. As well, should Rabobank and/or CSC feel like opening the pack against the wind in Normandy and Brittany, he is likely to be an easy victim. Denis Menchov is a good time triallist and he could stick with the first bunch uphill and pretty much like his former team mate Levi Leipheimer end up high overall, close to the fifth stake. Of all the Giro contenders except Basso (Savoldelli wasn't a contender in the end), Cunego is likely to be end the highest. He's got everything to learn, but he also has nothing to loose.
