In het begin mocht ze nog stoeien (zo begint de film ook) maar zodra Georgiana als bijna 17-jarig meisje in het huwelijk trad met de gerespecteerde en steenrijke graaf van Devonshire was de speeltijd voorbij. Dankzij haar scherpe geest, opmerkelijke schoonheid en verfijnde elegantie wist de dame toch een hele naam te maken voor zichzelf. Haar pogingen om te ontsnappen uit de gouden kooi waarin ze gevangen zat, bleken echter vergeefs. Het verhaal van de Gravin van Devonshire heeft veel boeiende en schrijnende kanten, gebeurtenissen en ontwikkelingen die genoeg stof bieden voor vier fascinerende kostuumfilms. Als je tenminste kan rekenen op een regisseur die begrijpt hoe je de finesse van de situatie tot zijn recht kan laten komen. Saul Dibb, die vijf jaar geleden ophef maakt met het harde stadsdrama 'Bullet Boy', mikt echter spectaculair naast het doel. Omdat hij kan rekenen op de onverwoestbare pracht van de 18de-eeuwse decors en outfits en op de al even onverwoestbare talenten van Ralph Fiennes (in de rol van de extreem conservatieve graaf) laat 'The Duchess' zich ergens nog bekijken. Het duurt echter niet lang voor je door hebt dat de film evenzeer aan de oppervlakte blijft krabben als Keira Knightleys hoofdvertolking. www.cinenews.be

Ik kan perfect begrijpen waarom veel komieken op een bepaald moment in hun carrière de drang voelen om te tonen dat er ook een steengoeie dramatische acteur in hen schuilt. Humor wordt tenslotte gruwelijk onderschat, wat de Oscars elk jaar opnieuw demonstreren. Daarom alleen al is het een plezier om te zien dat Jim Carrey teruggekeerd is naar zijn vertrouwde stal, zonder dat hij daarom een waas van verslagenheid en verbittering om zich heeft. Integendeel zelfs, in 'Yes Man' geeft hij niet alleen geweldig van jetje, hij probeert er ook een door en door positieve boodschap aan vast te knopen. Nu gruw ook ik gemakkelijk van commerciële cinema die zich geroepen voelt om de mensheid een of andere hapklare wijsheid mee te geven. meestal gaat zo'n film dan stevig uit de bocht en blijft van de vrolijke stemming maar weinig meer over. Ook 'Yes Man' maakt de fout dat hij na de onvermijdelijke moraal geen inspiratie of fut meer over heeft om de kijker nog met één laatste opstoot van hilariteit de zaal uit te sturen. Die uitschuiver omvat echter enkel de laatste tien minuten, waardoor je de bulderlachpartijen van daarvoor wel nog in je lijf hebt. Ik weet bij God niet meer welk gevoel ik nog moet hebben bij de woorden 'een Disneyfilm'. Aan de ene kant herbergt de Hollywoodstudio de tomeloze creativiteit van Pixar, anderzijds toont het huis dat Mickey gebouwd heeft zichzelf ook al te vaak als het filmische equivalent van McDonald's. Zesjarige kindjes zullen misschien nog verleid worden maar het heeft nauwelijks een greintje smaak. 'Bedtime Stories' behoort tot het soort geprefabriceerde pseudo-komedies die zelfs geen moeite meer doen om nog een min of meer verrassende grap of verhaalwending te verzinnen. De film begint bij één enkel idee (verhaaltjes-voor-het-slapengaan die werkelijkheid blijken te worden), propt dat in de plotmachine en duwt op de startknop. Wat aan het andere eind van de lopende band verschijnt, ziet er professioneel uit maar heeft ongeveer evenveel pit als een banaan. Alles en iedereen rijdt op automatische piloot met één enkel doel voor ogen: zo snel mogelijk de finishlijn bereiken en gaan lopen met de ongetwijfeld vette cheque. Neemt u er maar een voorbeeld aan, laat 'Bedtime Stoires' links liggen en gebruik de poen om een naaste gelukkig te maken met een iets groter kerstgeschenk. Zonder dank. www.cinenews.be

Op schandalige wijze geweigerd op het festival van Cannes (een simpel liefdesverhaaltje op het palmares van Cannes, ik dacht het niet!) moest de vierde film van James Gray revanche nemen door de harten van de kijkers te veroveren. Die zullen zich ongetwijfeld schrap, heel schrap zetten als ze de sentimentele verscheurdheid van Leonard (een machtige Joachim Phoenix) te zien krijgen, een jongeman die verscheurd wordt door zijn explosieve passie voor Michelle en haar fragiele upper-class verfijning (een straffe Gwyneth Paltrow) en zijn redelijke liefde voor Sandra, de dochter van de zakenpartner van zijn vader (Vinessa Shaw, een revelatie die een rustige kracht uitstraalt). Een scenario dat we ongetwijfeld al duizend keer gezien hebben maar zelden op deze manier. James Gray ('Little Odessa', 'We own the Night'...) overstijgt het genre door deze film op te vatten als een film noir. De personages observeren elkaar, verbergen zich, ontmoeten elkaar in het geniep, in kamers of in de schaduwen van een vochtig en donker New York. Ver verwijderd van de kinderlijke romantische komedies, de light versie van de liefdesfilm, heeft Gray geen schrik om zijn personages schaamteloos, zonder berekening en met volle overgave "I love you" tegen elkaar te laten zeggen, hen te doen lijden of hen te breken. Een kromgetrokken oud besje stapt naar de microfoon en begint met een aandoenlijk krassende stem 'Should I Stay or Should I Go?' van The Clash te declameren, occasioneel aangevuld door een voltallig koor van al even grijze zangers. De documentaire 'Young @ Heart' is op dat moment nauwelijks een paar minuten bezig en je bent al helemaal verkocht. De verbetenheid en het pure plezier waarmee de leden van het Amerikaanse koor zich aan de moderne muziek wijden, werken zo aanstekelijk dat je voortdurend in je zetel zit mee te swingen. Bovendien blijken de mensen die regisseur Stephen Walker met zijn camera volgt stuk voor stuk kleurrijke persoonlijkheden, figuren die (mede door hun leeftijd) een boeiend verhaal te vertellen hebben. 'Young @ Heart' huppelt aanvankelijk met een olijk toontje over het scherm. Eenmaal de humor van de situatie en de ironische bijklank van de songs die ze brengen ('Staying Alive' klinkt heel anders als het door 80-jarigen wordt gebracht) uitgewerkt is, sluipt er onverwacht een donkere en pijnlijke ondertoon de film binnen. Plots besef je dat die mensen zingen om zichzelf en de buitenwereld eraan te herinneren dat ze nog leven en dat ze geen zin hebben dat er binnen afzienbare tijd een einde aan komt. Hilarische en ongemeen pakkende film.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is een opkomende science-fiction en 3D film voor in 2009. Het is de sequel voor de in 2007 uitgekomen film Transformers, wat de eerste live-action Transformers-film was. Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg keren opnieuw terug executive producer en met Bay als regisseur, terwijl Shia LaBeouf zijn rol van Sam Witwicky opnieuw neemt, de mens die betrokken raakt tussen de oorlog van de heroïsche Autobots en kwaadaardige Decepticons. Het filmen begon in mei 2008 en heeft 26 juni 2009 als release datum.

Bay koos ervoor om Transformers 2 een groter budget te geven voor een grotere schaal en een grotere lijst van robots te krijgen. Het grootste probleem was om de Scriptschrijvers staking te verwerken. Het script zal door Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, en nieuwkomer Ehren Kruger geschreven worden.
