In recent years many companies that for their business, depend heavily on many assets or equipments, have implemented asset management capabilities. Financial institutions like banks or investment groups practice risk management and portfolio management. These methods can be applied on the management of technical equipments whether it is for individual equipment or assets or for entire fleets. Because of the privatisation of utility companies in England more then 15 years ago, competition has driven the companies to become perfect asset management companies.
Asset management is a competence that merges several capabilities; these are 1) strategy and visioning 2) investment management 3) technical management 4) asset information management
and the supporting capabilities : 1) knowledge management 2) risk management 3) change management
In order to implement asset management in a company the companies organisational structure needs to accommodate for it. This is usually a difficult but very important exercise and many companies fail to implement the correct organisational structure. A correct organisational structure will allow the asset management maturity to grow but most of all find its balanced position with other organisational units in the organisation.
