The busy B170 Ballysallagh Road between Bangor and Dundonald is expected to remain closed for weeks

Work repairing a County Down bridge will result in diversions and delays "for some time", the Department for Infrastructure has said.

The B170 Ballysallagh Road from Bangor to Dundonald remains closed after a lorry hit a bridge on Wednesday.

The department is liaising with the bridge's private owner and says repair work should start next week.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time due to increased traffic on the A2 and other commuter routes in the area.

The department also drew attention to safety precautions that were in place before the bridge was struck.

"There are a total of 13 warning signs on the two main approaches to the bridge which clearly indicate the presence of a low bridge stating the maximum height of vehicle which can safely pass under the bridge," it said.

Motorists should pay attention to warning signs and be aware of the size of their vehicle, it said.
