With a nice belgian chocolate and great smile they worked very hard for 3hours on their beloved instrument. Geertje Podevyn made them open up their violinplaying a lot more !!!! The reactions were very positive and everybody is looking forward to the next group lesson again.Just have a look and join us next time
THE HILL TRIBE Starting in 2006 I have been teaching at Insii Thai House for 8 weeks 3 days a week, 3 hours, and the atmosphere between us was really wonderful. The students were eager to learn and their progress was very fast. After only 2 weeks they could already play with 3 fingers on all strings and more than 16 different songs, even in canon. We were dynamic, we played violin, we ate good food, but we also did laugh a lot! I spoke Thai dek dek style(children style) and made a lot of talok (joke) with them. Later I cooked good Belgian cookie called Vlamingske for the kids to make a nice and sweet Belgian sound. The real good Belgian chocolate has also been introduced to them, but only when the sound of those 23 violins was really excellent! Of course, this kind of project could not be done without a lot of support. Without Count Gerald, the School Director, Ajarn Paramet, Ajarn Anurak and the Rotary Club of Maechan it would have been far more difficult for me to offer my time and my heart to the students. They received their own violin each. Since my departure the children continue to learn violin at the school of Ajarn Paramet, the Youth Violin Club of Chiangrai, until my next trip to Thailand in January 2007. These kids have countless capabilities but so few opportunities, it is really rewarding to make a project with them..
The sounds that the young beginner makes on the violin are very close to the original Thai music and the Flemish medieval music from de Machaut, Orlando di Lasso. VIOLINWONDERLAND is like the Suzuki method without written music but based on feelings, the right movement, emotion, and GOOD FOOD. Thailand is full of emotion, friendship, family life, patience, beautiful Thai songs and excellent food. So I felt the children needed another approach than the Japanese northern style: More emotion from south East Asia!
VIOLINWONDERLAND combines the excellent views of the 19 th century Belgian violin master Charles de Beriot on violin playing, together with my experiences in South East Asia, South America, Africa and Belgium of course. Charles de Beriot was the teacher of Vieuxtemps and Eugene Ysaye, founder of the Queen Elizabeth competition and highly respected in New York at Juillard School especially by famous violinists like Itzhak Perlman,Shlomo Mintz and recently Hilary Hahn ,also as teacher of Wieniawski, founder of the Russian Violinschool so this all happened in the little country of Belgium. The Maechan children have been the first to fully experience VIOLINWONDERLAND as they had never heard classical violin music but already knew a lot of Thai music. The methods first songs are quite close to their own schools songs; Kin Kluey, Kit Tung, abc, etc... They first learned to play pizzicato which is plucking the strings. They started with the bow later. The violin strings are like a family: G for grandfather, D for Daddy, A for Mama and E for baby After a visit at the music class of the school, it was decided that I would give my lessons at Insii Thai House, the residence of Count Gerald and Khun Weerapong Boonklieng, close to Maechan. The place is well known among the local residents, for hosting art exhibitions and other exclusive charity events. The traditional Thai style environment of the property was ideal for concentration and playing violin. Very artistic!
