CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For Edge & MVP, SmackDown was perhaps a sneak preview and a lesson that they might have their hands full at Vengeance: Night of Champions. The World Heavyweight Champion and the United States Champion teamed up to take on their respective challengers, Batista & Ric Flair, only to find themselves on their backs when the final bell sounded.
Going into Sunday, it is clear that Batista and Flair have momentum on their sides. Can Edge hold off Batistas challenges for a third and final time? Will the Nature Boy earn yet another title reign just weeks after joining the SmackDown roster?
Lead federal investigator Daniel Beck had an announcement of his own on Friday night, catching up our concerned fans with the latest developments in the case. Beck has been able to confirm that in addition to Mr. McMahon and the limo driver, the DNA of another well-known personality was also discovered in the limos remains. As Beck continues digging, the Chairman may be able to rest in peace come Monday when a special three-hour edition of Raw commemorates Mr. McMahons life.
While SmackDown marked a night of momentum and confidence for many Superstars heading into Vengeance: Night of Champions, Theodore Long had the biggest Friday night. In light of Mr. McMahons presumed death and Longs realization that life can be filled with unexpected events, SmackDowns General Manager asked Kristal to marry him. Taken aback, the Diva left the ring in tears, but moments later composed herself and accepted Longs proposal in the locker room area.
Chavo Guerrero hopes the main event tag team match on SmackDown wasnt the only sign of things to come. Along with Jamie Noble, he was able to defeat Shannon Moore and his Vengeance: Night of Champions opponent Jimmy Wang Yang. The Cruiserweight Champion was able to gain momentum and get the three-count over Moore. Though Yang watched his team lose on SmackDown, he has yet to be pinned in recent weeks and remains a threat to Guerreros gold on Sunday.
Matt Hardy got a match in as well, preparing for his chance to regain the World Tag Team Championship with his brother on Sunday. His win over Finlay came at a high price, however, as the Irish brawler removed the protection from Hardys knee and repeatedly blasted it like a punching bag.
In other action, Mark Henry rolled through Funaki, further establishing that he is truly King of the Jungle. Also, one of SmackDowns newest Superstars, Chris Masters, earned a win with his devastating Masterlock.
Was SmackDown a preview for Vengeance: Night of Champions? Find out, as every match features a title on the line, Sunday at 8/7 CT on pay-per-view.
ONE TNA STAR FLIES HIMSELF HOME AND IS APPARENTLY DONE, ANOTHER REQUESTS RELEASE
by Mike Johnson @ 12:35:00 AM on 6/20/2007
TNA star Konnan flew himself home from Orlando, Florida this morning,
skipping a scheduled appearance on last night's Impact taping and is
apparently done with the company. I was told by one source that Konnan
actually changed his flight home and left Florida at 7 AM Tuesday
morning. As of this writing, he has not received a release from the
company.
Several factors caused Konnan's exit, although the main factor was
that he was unhappy working for the company. He had been making noises
privately and publicly (most recently in an interview with Alex Marvez
where he alleged TNA claimed they would help him with costs of a kidney
transplant but reneged on the promise; TNA did lend money to Konnan for
a hip replacement surgery). Konnan's outspoken nature was probably a
factor in the LAX team being de-emphasized of late despite being one of
the most over acts with TNA's live audiences.
LAX, without Konnan, worked a match for TNA Xplosion against Chris
Sabin and Alex Shelley at the taping last night. According to one
source, Hernandez and Homicide were not aware Konnan left until they
arrived at TV. Homicide cut promos backstage during the taping as TNA
is going to give him the chance to talk.
Another factor may be Konnan's involvement with the AAA promotion
in Mexico as that company looks to (allegedly) finally move into the
United States in a major way. It's been felt for some time that Konnan,
who built his career legacy with AAA and is now involved in the
management end, would pick the lucha promotion over TNA if ever forced
to choose between one or the other. With word circulating that AAA,
after years of teasing it, is finally looking into seriously expanding
into the United States, Konnan's ability to go elsewhere (where he'll
have considerably more political power, to boot) could have fatored
into the decision to go home.
Konnan is not alone in attempting to depart the company. Ron
Killings was not in Orlando for TV yesterday and was not booked to
appear. Killings had requested his release prior to the Slammiversary
PPV in Nashville over the weekend. I am told he has not received a
release as of this writing. Killings had returned to the ring following
knee surgery at the PPV but has long been unhappy with his status with
the company. To be fair, his most recent character direction, where he
was out in Hollywood and doing movie-based vignettes, was considered
awful by most fans.
PWInsider.com will have more on this developing situation as we confirm further facts.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. As the cloud of mystery over Mr. McMahon's tragic presumed demise continued to hang over all of WWE and ECW,
the winds of change blew in the Land of the Extreme Tuesday night. The
first steps to crowning a new ECW World Champion were taken, as Chris Benoit and CM Punk won the opportunity to face each other for the vacant ECW World Title at Vengeance: Night of Champions.
Ironically, Benoit and Punk would not have gotten this title match
without Mr. McMahon. In his last official act, the Chairman stripped
Bobby Lashley of the ECW World Title after the proud former Army sergeant was drafted to Raw. Benoit and Punk did not get their title opportunity easily. New Breed leader Elijah Burke
and his enforcer, Marcus Cor Von would have loved to have brought the
ECW World Title to the New Breed. But Burke fell short to the Rabid
Wolverine, and the Straightedge Superstar somehow eked out a victory
over The Alpha Male.
The Rabid Wolverine is a former World Champion and perhaps a future
WWE Hall of Famer. CM Punk is an up-and-coming ECW Superstar and
perhaps a future World Champion. They represent the past, the present
and future of ECW and all of sports-entertainment and in many ways
are mirror images of each other.
When Benoit and Punk battle for the ECW World Title this Sunday at
Vengeance: Night of Champions, it will be a clash of both the past and
future of ECW. Their battle will be a war between titans who share both
the same passion for combat inside the squared circle and a mutual code
of honor.
Benoit and Punk were not the only Superstars to give our fans a
glimpse of the new landscape of ECW. Former Intercontinental and WWE
Tag Team Champion Johnny Nitro,
who was drafted to ECW this past Sunday during the WWE Supplemental
Draft, made his debut in the Land of the Extreme against tough ECW
Original Nunzio. The Full-Blooded Italian showed the A-lister what
extreme means in ECW. But in the end, Nitro showed our fans and the
rest of ECW that he is an A-lister who can kick some a**.
Meanwhile, recent draftee Boogeyman
continued to send nightmares throughout the ECW locker room by quickly
decimating and worming another hapless foe. Our fans cringed in horror
as the worms wiggled in Boogeymans mouth and he celebrated another
victory. It looks like he is looking to bring more victims down to The
Bottomless Pit in the weeks ahead.
Boogeymans entrance in ECW has caused sleepless nights, but it appears new draftee The Mizs
debut is highly anticipated, especially among the ladies of Extreme
Exposé. The trio was seen talking about the former reality TV star, and Brooke even seems to have a crush on The Miz. But it also appears that Kelly Kelly may
have already spent some time with Miz and Layla knows about it. Stay
tuned to ECW on Sci Fi in the coming weeks and see if this potential
saga develops.
Kevin Thorn
is not new to ECW, but he is one of its most promising young stars. He
has been on a brutal winning streak since leaving the New Breed and
focusing on leaving his own carnage in ECW. Tommy Dreamer, the heart and soul of ECW, tested the fanged freak, but Thorn pounded him into defeat.
Benoit, Punk, Burke, Cor Von, Nitro, Boogeyman and Thorn all gave
our fans a glimpse of ECWs future, and by all indications, it is
bright. One thing is for sure: Vengeance: Night of Champions will be
the beginning of a new era in the Land of Extreme. Dont miss history
in the making at Vengeance this Sunday at 8/7 CT, only on pay-per-view.

RICHMOND, Va.
With the black, ominous cloud thats been looming over World
Wrestling Entertainment all week after the tragic limo explosion, it
has been decided that, just as Mr. McMahon would have wanted it, the
show will go on. For the first Raw episode in 14-years, the show did go on without its beloved Chairman.
Our fans were in for a surprise when Stephanie made her first public
appearance of any McMahon since his tragic demise, and promised that
vengeance will come once her family finds out who caused this horrific
tragedy.
Federal investigator Daniel Beck was also at Richmond Coliseum in
search of clues about the tragic limousine explosion that presumably
killed Mr. McMahon. Beck questioned Superstars, referees, the tech crew
and anyone that he believed could be a suspect. No one was safe, not
even Mr. McMahons limo driver himself.
With Mr. McMahon gone, Jonathan Coachman
was given control over Raw on an interim basis. The first thing he did
was force Vengeance opponents to team up, as WWE Champion John Cena & Bobby Lashley were matched against Randy Orton & King Booker.
While these Superstars are no strangers to one another, there was a lot
of frustration among these four men when fingers were pointing at each
other playing the game of whodunit? They all battled their way
viciously, giving our fans a taste of what could happen this Sunday at
Vengeance: Night of Champions. While Lashley seemed to be gaining an
advantage in the match, the Legend Killer came out of nowhere, nailing
Lashley with a brutal RKO, to give his team the victory. If Orton or
any of the challengers can do the same on Sunday, there will be a new
WWE Champion come next Monday night.
After Mick Foley made sincere condolences to the McMahon family, Coachman ordered Foley to fight none other than the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga,
in Foleys first one-on-one match on Raw in seven years. Its a man
that Mr. McMahon detested against a man that Mr. McMahon admired,
Coachman said. Unfortunately, even steel chairs couldnt stop the
unleashed Umaga, as the Samoan Bulldozer plowed Foleys head through
the steel steps, leaving him in the hands of Dr. Rios.
Newly drafted to the Raw roster last week, Mr. Kennedy
made his presence loud and clear when he grabbed the microphone and
stated that hes dedicating his career to a man who was like a father
to him. From here on out, I pledge my career to continuing the legacy
of Mr. Vincent KENNEDY McMahon McMahon. Kennedy also said that hes
the greatest thing to ever grace WWE, a claim that our Raw fans will
soon be able to validate for themselves.
It was announced earlier in the day on WWE.com that The Hardys will challenge Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship at Vengeance: Night of Champions. On Raw, the champions sat at ringside while the high-flying Jeff Hardy took on Daivari,
who was drafted to Raw in the Supplemental Draft. After Jeff pinned
Daivari with the Swanton Bomb, Cade & Murdoch grabbed a microphone,
telling Jeff that it was poor sportsmanship by The Hardys that caused
them to attack two weeks ago. Jeff flipped out at the accusation, and
ended up flipping himself over the top rope to take the champions out.
In other Raw action, Carlito came to the ring to speak his mind about his former mentor Ric Flair and ex-girlfriend Torrie Wilson being drafted to SmackDown
last week. They both got drafted off my show Raw, and its a good
thing too. Ric Flair couldnt take any more Carlito, he said.
Carlitos words didnt seem too cool, however for Raw Supplemental
draftee Sandman, who entered the Richmond Coliseum through the crowd, raised some hell with Carlito, and sent him scurrying out of the ring.
Speaking of Supplemental draftees, Raws first selection, the team of Paul London & Brian Kendrick,
showed off their high-flying repertoire on Raw for the first time. The
popular former WWE Tag Team Champions were successful in their Raw
debut, defeating The Worlds Greatest Tag Team after Kendrick nailed Shelton Benjamin with Sliced Bread No. 2.
Another Supplemental draftee, Jillian Hall was also successful in her Raw debut as she teamed with Womens Champion Melina to defeat Candice Michelle and hometown hero Mickie James.
The victory ended Candices recent winning streak over Melina, as the
Candy-licious Diva had defeated the Womens Champion in several
non-title matches in recent weeks. For the first time in weeks, Melina
got the better of Candice, and appears to back on top of her game. The
question remains, however, if the Womens Champion can do it again with
the gold on the line at Vengeance: Night of Champions. Can Melina
retain the gold on Sunday, or will this victory prove to be the
exception rather than the rule?
