Results:The beginning of a new ECW dawn

    By Bryan Robinson
    June 19, 2007

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As the cloud of mystery over Mr. McMahon's tragic presumed demise continued to hang over all of WWE and ECW, the winds of change blew in the Land of the Extreme Tuesday night. The first steps to crowning a new ECW World Champion were taken, as Chris Benoit and CM Punk won the opportunity to face each other for the vacant ECW World Title at Vengeance: Night of Champions.

Ironically, Benoit and Punk would not have gotten this title match without Mr. McMahon. In his last official act, the Chairman stripped Bobby Lashley of the ECW World Title after the proud former Army sergeant was drafted to Raw. Benoit and Punk did not get their title opportunity easily. New Breed leader Elijah Burke and his enforcer, Marcus Cor Von would have loved to have brought the ECW World Title to the New Breed. But Burke fell short to the Rabid Wolverine, and the Straightedge Superstar somehow eked out a victory over The Alpha Male.

The Rabid Wolverine is a former World Champion and perhaps a future WWE Hall of Famer. CM Punk is an up-and-coming ECW Superstar and perhaps a future World Champion. They represent the past, the present and future of ECW and all of sports-entertainment – and in many ways are mirror images of each other.

When Benoit and Punk battle for the ECW World Title this Sunday at Vengeance: Night of Champions, it will be a clash of both the past and future of ECW. Their battle will be a war between titans who share both the same passion for combat inside the squared circle and a mutual code of honor.

Benoit and Punk were not the only Superstars to give our fans a glimpse of the new landscape of ECW. Former Intercontinental and WWE Tag Team Champion Johnny Nitro, who was drafted to ECW this past Sunday during the WWE Supplemental Draft, made his debut in the Land of the Extreme against tough ECW Original Nunzio. The Full-Blooded Italian showed the A-lister what extreme means in ECW. But in the end, Nitro showed our fans – and the rest of ECW – that he is an A-lister who can kick some a**.

Meanwhile, recent draftee Boogeyman continued to send nightmares throughout the ECW locker room by quickly decimating and worming another hapless foe. Our fans cringed in horror as the worms wiggled in Boogeyman’s mouth and he celebrated another victory. It looks like he is looking to bring more victims down to The Bottomless Pit in the weeks ahead.

Boogeyman’s entrance in ECW has caused sleepless nights, but it appears new draftee The Miz’s debut is highly anticipated, especially among the ladies of Extreme Exposé. The trio was seen talking about the former reality TV star, and Brooke even seems to have a crush on The Miz. But it also appears that Kelly Kelly may have already spent some time with Miz – and Layla knows about it. Stay tuned to ECW on Sci Fi in the coming weeks and see if this potential saga develops.

Kevin Thorn is not new to ECW, but he is one of its most promising young stars. He has been on a brutal winning streak since leaving the New Breed and focusing on leaving his own carnage in ECW. Tommy Dreamer, the heart and soul of ECW, tested the fanged freak, but Thorn pounded him into defeat.

Benoit, Punk, Burke, Cor Von, Nitro, Boogeyman and Thorn all gave our fans a glimpse of ECW’s future, and by all indications, it is bright. One thing is for sure: Vengeance: Night of Champions will be the beginning of a new era in the Land of Extreme. Don’t miss history in the making at Vengeance this Sunday at 8/7 CT, only on pay-per-view.

Can’t get enough of ECW? Relive each match in its entirety on Hardcore Hangover at ECW.com.

RICHMOND, Va. – With the black, ominous cloud that’s been looming over World Wrestling Entertainment all week after the tragic limo explosion, it has been decided that, just as Mr. McMahon would have wanted it, the show will go on. For the first Raw episode in 14-years, the show did go on without it’s beloved Chairman.

Our fans were in for a surprise when Stephanie made her first public appearance of any McMahon since his tragic demise, and promised that vengeance will come once her family finds out who caused this horrific tragedy.

Federal investigator Daniel Beck was also at Richmond Coliseum in search of clues about the tragic limousine explosion that presumably killed Mr. McMahon. Beck questioned Superstars, referees, the tech crew and anyone that he believed could be a suspect. No one was safe, not even Mr. McMahon’s limo driver himself.

With Mr. McMahon gone, Jonathan Coachman was given control over Raw on an interim basis. The first thing he did was force Vengeance opponents to team up, as WWE Champion John Cena & Bobby Lashley were matched against Randy Orton & King Booker. While these Superstars are no strangers to one another, there was a lot of frustration among these four men when fingers were pointing at each other playing the game of “whodunit?” They all battled their way viciously, giving our fans a taste of what could happen this Sunday at Vengeance: Night of Champions. While Lashley seemed to be gaining an advantage in the match, the Legend Killer came out of nowhere, nailing Lashley with a brutal RKO, to give his team the victory. If Orton or any of the challengers can do the same on Sunday, there will be a new WWE Champion come next Monday night.

After Mick Foley made sincere condolences to the McMahon family, Coachman ordered Foley to fight none other than the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga, in Foley’s first one-on-one match on Raw in seven years. “It’s a man that Mr. McMahon detested against a man that Mr. McMahon admired,” Coachman said. Unfortunately, even steel chairs couldn’t stop the unleashed Umaga, as the Samoan Bulldozer plowed Foley’s head through the steel steps, leaving him in the hands of Dr. Rios.

Newly drafted to the Raw roster last week, Mr. Kennedy made his presence loud and clear when he grabbed the microphone and stated that he’s dedicating his career to a man who was like a father to him. “From here on out, I pledge my career to continuing the legacy of Mr. Vincent KENNEDY McMahon…McMahon.” Kennedy also said that he’s the greatest thing to ever grace WWE, a claim that our Raw fans will soon be able to validate for themselves.

It was announced earlier in the day on WWE.com that The Hardys will challenge Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship at Vengeance: Night of Champions. On Raw, the champions sat at ringside while the high-flying Jeff Hardy took on Daivari, who was drafted to Raw in the Supplemental Draft. After Jeff pinned Daivari with the Swanton Bomb, Cade & Murdoch grabbed a microphone, telling Jeff that it was poor sportsmanship by The Hardys that caused them to attack two weeks ago. Jeff flipped out at the accusation, and ended up flipping himself over the top rope to take the champions out.

In other Raw action, Carlito came to the ring to speak his mind about his former mentor Ric Flair and ex-girlfriend Torrie Wilson being drafted to SmackDown last week. “They both got drafted off my show Raw, and it’s a good thing too. Ric Flair couldn’t take any more Carlito,” he said. Carlito’s words didn’t seem too cool, however for Raw Supplemental draftee Sandman, who entered the Richmond Coliseum through the crowd, raised some hell with Carlito, and sent him scurrying out of the ring.

Speaking of Supplemental draftees, Raw’s first selection, the team of Paul London & Brian Kendrick, showed off their high-flying repertoire on Raw for the first time. The popular former WWE Tag Team Champions were successful in their Raw debut, defeating The World’s Greatest Tag Team after Kendrick nailed Shelton Benjamin with Sliced Bread No. 2.

Another Supplemental draftee, Jillian Hall was also successful in her Raw debut as she teamed with Women’s Champion Melina to defeat Candice Michelle and hometown hero Mickie James. The victory ended Candice’s recent winning streak over Melina, as the Candy-licious Diva had defeated the Women’s Champion in several non-title matches in recent weeks. For the first time in weeks, Melina got the better of Candice, and appears to back on top of her game. The question remains, however, if the Women’s Champion can do it again with the gold on the line at Vengeance: Night of Champions. Can Melina retain the gold on Sunday, or will this victory prove to be the exception rather than the rule?

RHINO & SENSHI VS. THE LAX
Rhino and Homicide started out, but Rhino quickly overpowered the LAX member - even throwing him out of the ring with a reverse powerbomb! Hernandez tagged in, as well as Senshi. Senshi attempted to use his martial arts kicks on Hernandez, but the big man overpowered him. The LAX worked over Senshi, keeping him away from Rhino. Senshi eventually hit the Warrior's Way stomp on Hernandez, tagging in Rhino who took over on Homicide. The LAX took back over, working over Rhino when Konnan tossed in the flapjack. However, before he could do it Hector Guerrero nailed Homicide, allowing Rhino to hit the Gore on Homicide for the win!

Backstage, Ms. Brooks attempted to once again seduce Eric Young - but Gail Kim intervened and planted a kiss on Eric as good luck before his match later against Robert Roode.

X TITLE MATCH: CHRIS SABIN vs. "BLACK MACHISMO" JAY LETHAL
Two of TNA's top X Division stars battled for the X Championship as it was Chris Sabin taking on "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal! Lethal started the match by attempting to take to the air, but Sabin kept shutting him down with underhanded tactics. Lethal retook control, but time after time he was unable to get the pin. Finally, Lethal grounded Sabin and went to the top to deliver the big elbow! "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal is the brand new TNA X Division Champion!

FRANK WYCHECK AND JERRY LYNN VS. JAMES STORM AND THE TRUTH
Jerry Lynn and The Truth started off the match, trading high-flying elbows and kicks. James Storm and Frank Wycheck eventually squared off, with Storm outwrestled Wycheck early until the NFL star grounded him with shoulder blocks. Storm attempted to use a chair, but referee Rudy Charles took it away, allowing Wycheck to tag Lynn in. Storm took control on Lynn and even spit beer in the face of Titan Pro Bowler Kyle Vanden Bosch. Wycheck tagged back in and cleared house of Storm and Truth, but the Cowboy managed to hit a superkick on Wycheck. However, Vanden Bosch pulled Storm off Wycheck, allowing his Titan teammate to regain his strength. With help from Jerry Lynn, Wycheck nailed a piledriver on Storm to get the win!

    MR. BACKLUND VS. ALEX SHELLEY
In his in-ring return, Backlund started the bout by taking Shelley off his feet repeatedly. Shelley countered with chops and took Backlund down into an armlock submission. Backlund countered out and nail Shelley with backrops - but Chris Sabin came out to interfere. Backlund turned the tables on Sabin, allowing him to hit a bridge on Shelley for the win! After the bout, Backlund put the Chicken Wing on Shelley, which brought out Kevin Nash! Nash pulled Backlund off Shelley, which brought out Jerry Lynn. Nash then hit a big boot on Lynn, allowing Sabin and Shelley to double-team Backlund. However, "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal hit the ring to even the odds and help Backlund!

After the bout, "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels appeared in the crowd to talk about his upcoming bout against Sting!

THE VOODOO KIN MAFIA VS. BASHAM & DAMAJA WITH CHRSTY HEMME
Two of TNA's top tag teams collided with VKMvs. Basham and Damaja. Christy's team took the early advantage, but they were no match for the VKM - who ending up winning the bout! Afterwards, Kip James dragged Christy into the ring for some revenge, but it was Lance Hoyt who turned his back on the VKM by smashing Kip from behind and saving Christy! Hoyt and Christy locked lips as a final show of unity over the fallen VKM!

After the bout, The Latin American Xchange - led by Konnan - attacked Hector Guerrero at the Spanish announce position!

FREEDOM MATCH - ERIC YOUNG VS. ROBERT ROODE
Early in the bout, the action spilled to ringside, with Roode smashing Young on the steel barriers. Back in the ring, Young attempted several comebacks, but Roode kept dishing out the punishment. Eric managed to get the upper hand on Roode, but Ms. Brooks interfered. In turn, Young left the ring and pulled her pants down! Young hit a top rope elbow drop, but couldn't get the pin. Later, Roode nailed Young with a steel chair, finally scoring the 1-2-3. Roode grabbed the mic to officially fire Eric Young from TNA, but Jim Cornette came out to put a stop to it! Cornette ordered the match restarted - and Brooks once again went for the steel chair, but was stopped by Gail Kim! Young then rolled up Roode for the pin! Eric Young is now free from Robert Roode!

TEAM 3D VS. RICK STEINER AND ANIMAL
Rick Steiner promised he had a backup when his brother Scott Steiner couldn't compete - and it was none other than Road Warrior Animal! Brother Devon and Rick Steiner started off the match trading power moves, with Brother Ray and Animal tagging in and going face-to-face! With the crowd chanting "LOD! LOD!", Animal and Rick Steiner began to double-team Devon. All four members from both teams began to brawl in the ring - trading clotheslines and big kicks. However, the TNA World Tag Team Champions were able to hit the 3D on Rick Steiner to get the win!

STING vs. "THE FALLEN ANGEL" CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
Sting repelled from the top of the arena on his entrance! Sting started out the match a house of fire, beating Daniels all over the ring. However, Daniels quickly turned the match in his favor. After several minutes of battering the icon, Daniels made a mistake when he went for Sting's signature Stinger Splash. Sting came back to life, beating his chest and pummeling Daniels. Sting finally hit the reverse DDT on Daniels to score the win!

    ABYSS VS. TOMKO
Two of TNA's biggest juggernauts collided in a no disqualification match, and within minutes Abyss went for his black bag under the ring. Abyss dumped out the tacks and went to chokeslam Tomko into them, but Tomko reversed it and sent Abyss into pile of thumbtacks! Abyss regrouped and nailed a Black Hole Slam on his nemesis, but Tomko kicked out. Abyss got out another bag from under the ring - and this time poured out broken glass! Tomko smashed Abyss in the back and took a piece of the jagged glass and jammed it into Abyss' head. The action spilled to the outside, with Tomko nailing Abyss with the barbed wire bat as they went up the ramp. Then, both Abyss and Tomko climbed the entrance ramp! Nearly 50 feet in the air, Tomko tried to smash Abyss with the bat, but Abyss sent him flying down into the set below! Abyss then jumped off and landed on Tomko! Both TNA stars tried to regain their senses and got back into the ring, where Abyss slammed Tomko into the pile of broken glass for the win!

Up next, an interview with Jeff Jarrett aired where Jeff thanked the fans for their support after the recent passing of his wife, Jill Jarrett.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN FOR THE TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Before the start of the match, Jim Cornette announced he had chosen "Wildcat" Chris Harris as the fifth and final competitor in the bout. Harris, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Christian Cage and Kurt Angle made their way in for the start. It was an all-out war, with the ladder being used as a weapon throughout. In the end, after Harris speared Christian Cage off the ladder - it was Kurt Angle hanging the gold to become the TNA World Heavyweight Champion!

    Vince alive and well
McMahon story makes the cover of PA newspaper

A limousine burst into flames outside the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township late Monday, presumably killing long-time World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman Vince McMahon.

Or so WWE would like its fans to believe.

WWE fans around the country were treated to an explosive ending to a sold-out Monday Night Raw, live at the Northeastern Pennsylvania arena for a special three-hour broadcast. McMahon’s apparent demise, however, was just another twist in the male soap opera’s story line.

As far as Wilkes-Barre Township Police Chief Robert Brozowski knows, McMahon is alive and well. WWE taped the explosion Sunday night on the arena property under controlled conditions with the township’s permission, he said. WWE representatives purchased a permit from the township after providing proof of insurance and certification to use pyrotechnics.

Deerfield, N.Y.-based Zenith Pyrotechnology performed the controlled explosion before township firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Still, the supposed death of McMahon in Wilkes-Barre created quite a stir. Concerned fans and curious media members across the country called the Wilkes-Barre Township police and Wilkes-Barre City police to inquire about the explosion, shown live on the USA Network.

Lt. Will Clark of the Wilkes-Barre Township police even took a call from Warner Bros. asking if a body had been sent to the coroner’s office yet.

“The end result is everybody thought it was real, and we got inundated with calls about the homicide that doesn’t exist,” Clark said. “It comes down to the old adage you don’t always believe what you see on TV.”

The only evidence of an explosion at the arena was a small, black scorch mark in the parking lot behind the facility, hidden from public view.

There was no indication an allegedly fatal explosion occurred just nights earlier.

Still, the WWE contends McMahon may be dead. In fact, a full investigation into the suspicious incident is under way, according to a WWE press release, “although full details have not been disclosed.” WWE’s Web site also features one fan’s account describing McMahon’s scorched body hanging out of the limousine.

No suspects are being ruled out, according to the release. Real estate magnate Donald Trump, rapper Snoop Dogg, NBC’s Bob Costas and wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin all made negative statements about McMahon the night of the bombing, the release also pointed out.

“But would any go so far as to actually blow him up?” the release asks.

Luzerne County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Lisman said no one advised the coroner’s office of McMahon’s death.

“I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about,” he said.

Steve Poremba, marketing coordinator at the arena, was mum on what really happened Sunday and Monday nights and referred all questions to WWE’s headquarters in Connecticut.

WWE spokesman Kevin Hennessy declined comment, but assured the limousine has been disposed of properly.

Meanwhile, WWE’s Web site declared Tuesday a day of mourning for the organization. Flags at WWE’s headquarters were flown at half-staff, and the McMahon family will issue an online statement today, according to the Web site.

A woman from Arizona called The Citizens’ Voice on Tuesday and said the show was so convincing, she had to find out if McMahon actually died.

She noted fans could never know for sure whether something is staged after the death of Owen Hart in 1999. The 34-year-old fell to his death at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo., during a pay-per-view event.

Hart was being lowered into the ring from the rafters of the arena as part of a skit when the hoist malfunctioned. Hart fell 78 feet and hit his chest on the turnbuckle, severing his aorta. He died about an hour later.

However, this death — which came during McMahon’s self-proclaimed Mr. McMahon Appreciation Night — is a hoax, Brozowski said.

“Vince lives on,” he said. “I wish him a speedy recovery. I’m sure he’s sitting in a nice hotel room in Trump Plaza laughing like a bastard.”

PHILADELPHIA – After the devastation of Monday’s Raw, the Superstars of SmackDown and the new draftees paid tribute to Mr. McMahon throughout the night. As questions swirl around the tragic events that befell the Chairman, SmackDown carried on the show, hoping to relieve some of the emotional stress that haunts them in the wake of the horrendous limo explosion.

One of the bright spots coming out of Monday night was the drafting of four new Superstars to Friday nights, and new draftee Ric Flair arrived and went straight to the top for his first fight – a non-title contest against World Heavyweight Champion Edge. Earlier in the night, Flair’s former Evolution teammate and protégé Batista was in non-title action against United States Champion MVP. As The Animal’s pursuit of the Rated-R Superstar and his gold will continue at Vengeance: Night of Champions in a Last Chance Match, their paths crossed once more on SmackDown.

In other action, the WWE Tag Team Champions Deuce & Domino defeated Paul London & Brian Kendrick. The boys from the Other Side of the Tracks used their powerful, in-your-face style to pick up the win in what could be their last appearance on SmackDown together. With the Supplemental Draft scheduled for Sunday at noon ET exclusively on WWE.com, Deuce & Domino, as well as every other SmackDown Superstar, are still in danger of moving from Friday nights.

One Superstar who thrives on danger is Matt Hardy, who took on William Regal in one-on-one action. Hardy has been one of the hottest Superstars in all of WWE lately, on a winning streak unmatched in recent memory before catching the ire of the presumed dead Chairman. Regal, however, began the night with a heartfelt address over the events involving Mr. McMahon, and he couldn’t find a way to overcome both Hardy and his emotions. Matt Hardy can certainly feel on track after the win on SmackDown.

Finally, Jimmy Wang Yang became the No. 1 contender to Cruiserweight Champion of the World Chavo Guerrero and his title. Yang was able to defeat Shannon Moore, Jamie Noble and Daivari in a Fatal Four Way match to decide who would take on Guerrero at Vengeance: Night of Champions. Yang has had major success in non-title matches against the champion, but Guerrero is a veteran who always shines brightest in the big moment. Can SmackDown’s resident redneck find the key to success once more at Vengeance: Night of Champions?

    "Sensational" Sherri passes away

    "Sensational" Sherri passes away

WWE is saddened to learn of the death of WWE Hall of Famer “Sensational” Sherri. She was 49.

She passed away at her mother’s home in Birmingham, Ala. Friday morning, according to her husband of 10 years, Robert Schrull.

“It’s a great loss to the wrestling world,” he told WWE.com. The couple resided in St. Petersburg, Fla.

In the early 1980s, Sherri began her career in the AWA. In 1985, she defeated Candi Devine to become the AWA Women’s Champion. Their rivalry lasted more than a year, with the championship trading hands on several occasions.

It was during this time that she began perfecting her skills as a manager, leading “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers to the AWA Tag Team Championship. On June 28, 1986, Martel would win the AWA Women’s Championship for a third and final time from Candi Devine.

On July 24, 1987, “Sensational” Sherri debuted in WWE, pinning her trainer and mentor the Fabulous Moolah to become Women’s Champion. Sherri defended the gold against Debbie Combs, Velvet McIntyre, and Desiree Peterson.

She quickly earned the reputation as someone who would do anything to win, even if it meant using unsavory tactics. Her rivalry with Moolah continued as they became the captains for the first-ever female Survivor Series teams in 1989. Sherri held the championship for 15 months before losing to Rockin’ Robin.

In the early ‘90s WWE phased out the Women’s Division, leaving Sherri to focus on managing the male wrestlers. Her first client was “Macho Man” Randy Savage. It was during this time that she became “Sensation Queen.”

The couple had rivals with Miss Elizabeth, Hulk Hogan, Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire. In 1991, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase enlisted her services. After that relationship dissolved, she took on the managerial duties of Shawn Michaels.

In 1994, Sherri appeared in WCW as “Sensuous” Sherri managing Ric Flair during his rivalries with Sting and Hulk Hogan. After separating from Flair, she became “Sister” Sherri guiding Harlem Heat to seven WCW Tag Team Championships.

Sherri was enshrined in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase was her presenter.
