Backstage News on Ziggler and the World Title

Posted by Steve Carrier on 05/17/2013 at 09:35 AM

For those wondering, WWE has no plans to strip Dolph Ziggler of the World Heavyweight Title, no matter how much time he has to miss.

There is still talk of having the ladder match with he, Jack Swagger and Alberto Del Rio, possibly at SummerSlam. This means that these three Superstars will be in the World Heavyweight Title picture for a few more months.

Despite other reports online, there is no backstage heat on Swagger for Dolph getting injured.

    WWE Smackdown Results
    May 17, 2013
    Wichita, Kansas
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

"Then. Now. Forever." The WWE video leads us into the show.

A video plays which recaps Teddy Long's big announcement for Extreme Rules regarding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Dolph Ziggler's concussion has left him unable to defend his title in the scheduled triple threat ladder match, so Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger will compete in an I Quit Match to determine the number one contender. Also shown is Randy Orton giving Big Show an RKO last week on Smackdown. Orton and Big Show will meet face to face on Miz TV.

Michael Cole, Josh Mathews, and John "Bradshaw" Layfield welcome us to the show. The Miz is in the ring with the Miz TV decorations up. Miz welcomes the crowd to the return of the most must-see WWE talk show in history. His two guests tonight are bitter rivals who will go one-on-one at Extreme Rules. That show will be memorable, but lets make tonight memorable as well. Miz then introduces Randy Orton and Big Show to the ring.

Miz says they will collide in an Extreme Rules match, which means anything goes. These two have had issues since WrestleMania, which makes this match one of the most anticipated matches at Extreme Rules. Big Show defeated Tensai last week on Friday Night Smackdown, but the Viper struck soon after. Miz then shows a video from last week of Big Show getting an RKO from Orton after his match against Tensai.

Miz asks if Orton leaving Big Show lying in the middle of the ring is a preview of what to expect at Extreme Rules. Big Show says he would expect a weasel like The Miz to make a statement like that. The only reason Randy Orton hit him with an RKO was from behind like the snake in the grass that he is. Orton attacked him at WrestleMania, and he attacked him in his match against Tensai. In an Extreme Rules match, there are no rules. He can use anything he wants to rip Orton apart. He doesn't need weapons like Orton does. He has one hooked to the end of his wrist. In St. Louis, in Orton's hometown, the only thing people will remember is a TKO, not an RKO.

Orton says that was a very interesting and entertaining story. The only thing is the ending is inaccurate. This Sunday, Extreme Rules does take place in St. Louis, his hometown. If Big Show thinks for one second that he's going to let him beat him in his hometown in front of his friends, family, and city, there isn't a chance. The only reason they're at each other's throats is because he made the mistake of trusting Big Show. Orton tells Big Show to trust him that the only thing people will remember from this Sunday at Extreme Rules in his hometown of St. Louis is how the Viper struck down the Giant. If Big Show isn't careful, he just may not get back up.

Jack Swagger's music hits, and he makes his way to the ring with Zeb Colter. Colter asks to interrupt the therapy session in the ring. They've both got it wrong. He agrees that Sunday night will be memorable, but it won't be because of anything Orton or Big Show do. It's going to be because Jack Swagger is going to make Alberto Del Rio say two words: "I Quit." If he prefers, he can say it in his native tongue: "No Mas." No more sneaking from behind to attack Swagger. People will remember that Sunday was the night that Jack Swagger's America became a reality, and he emerged as the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. If you listen closely, thousands of real Americans will rise to their feet and say, "We the people!"

Alberto Del Rio's music hits, and he comes out to the ring with Ricardo Rodriguez. He tells Zeb Colter to shut up. Del Rio says everyone is sick and tired of hearing Colter talk. Del Rio wants to make this clear to him and everyone else. The only thing people will remember from Sunday is this: Ricardo Rodriguez says Del Rio's name. Del Rio says he will become the number one contender because he's going to make Jack Swagger say, "I Quit." As for Jumanji-man, Zeb Colter, he'll make sure he goes back to where he came from so he never sneaks into his business again.

Mark Henry's music hits, and he makes his way out to the stage. Henry walks to the ring as he says he hears them all talking about what will be remembered on Sunday. He'll tell them what is going to be remembered. What will be remembered is Mark Henry, the World's Strongest Man, pulling semis. What people will remember is him throwing, dragging, and beating Sheamus like no one has ever beaten him in his life. Henry gets in the ring with the rest of the wrestlers. Henry says what people are going to remember is that he's the strongest man in the world because, "That's what I do!"

Sheamus' music hits, and he comes out to the stage with one hand behind his back. Sheamus says his strap match against Mark Henry will be the most memorable, especially when he leaves Henry's giant carcass battered and bruised. Sheamus then wonders why they should wait until Sunday when they can show a preview of their match right now. Sheamus then charges the ring and starts whipping Henry with a belt he was carrying. Big Show, Swagger, and Colter also bail from the ring.

    -Commercial Break-

Teddy Long's music hits, and the Senior Advisor to the Smackdown General Manager comes out to the stage. Long says he's ready for Extreme Rules after seeing what just happened. We'll take a look at Ryback's assault on John Cena from Monday Night RAW, next.

    -Commercial Break-

The Miz is in Teddy Long's office. Long says Miz can sure stir the pot, and now they have a great main event. Long welcomes Miz back, and he says that Smackdown has missed him. Miz says the way things broke down out there, it's like he never left. Damien Sandow comes in, and he has a thought. Everyone would be better off if Miz never returned so people could bask in the glory of a host with a sense of taste and direction as opposed to a card-carrying ignoramus whose actions incited a near riot this evening. Sandow has a proposal: The Damien Sandow Show. In his benevolence, he has decided to give Long the first opportunity to produce it. Long says he'll take that into consideration, but tonight he has to show him what he can do in the ring against The Miz. Long says, "You're welcome."

They show John Cena attempting to win the elimination tag team match on RAW only to get attacked by The Shield to prevent them from losing clean. They then gave John Cena a Triple Powerbomb. Ryback then came out, nearly showed compassion, but then came back with a steel chair. Ryback then slammed the chair off Cena's injured Achilles Heel.

    AJ Lee Note

    - As seen on Monday's RAW, AJ Lee defeated Natalya with her Black Widow submission move. WWE's website spoke to AJ about using the move that she once used in WWE developmental:

"I’ve had it in my back pocket for a while. I’m not the strongest person, so anything that lets me trap myself on an opponent, like a spider in a web, is effective. The abdomen gets stretched, the neck is in an uncomfortable position and my opponent’s arms are extended where they shouldn’t be. So it’s everything all at once, using all 115 pounds of my pure muscle and ‘badassery’ to the fullest extent."

Antonio Cesaro Labeled "Boring" By WWE Officials
Antonio Cesaro Labeled "Boring" By WWE Officials

After holding the US Championship for 240 days through last month when he was upended by Kofi Kingston, Antonio Cesaro's standing in WWE has been greatly curtailed as he has lost a majority of his televised matches. For those wondering whether his demotion is as result of "heat" backstage, it is not. Rather, top WWE officials simply feel he lacks personality.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio Monday night that company brass believe that the former ROH standout is "boring," resulting in his slide down the card. Some in WWE, however, are not in favor of the demotion, and believe Cesaro should be a headliner.

While Cesaro engaged in a match with Kingston two weeks on WWE Main Event that was well-received by management, it failed to alter his standing in the organization. Meltzer remarked, "They don't see him any higher than they did two weeks ago. There was lip service paid there for a week or two, but it's over now."

I miss one week due to @REALBully5150 and @TestifyDevon acts upon me and I miss my brother. I was shocked to see him. TNA has its monster back and just in time to defeat @TheAcesAnd8s. I knew he would come back. I feel better and healed up. I'll be at @IMPACTWRESTLING Thurs."
