The Knockouts still a big ratings draw

Posted by Randy Gordon on 02/19/2009 at 10:32 AM

    Credit: F4WOnline.com

As reported earlier, last Thursday’s edition of TNA iMPACT drew a 1.22 cable rating and 1.7 million viewers. It was the third largest viewing audience in the history of the show. It would appear that the bump in the rating was as a result of the the older Male demographic as it drew some of its best numbers. The show did a 1.17 in Males 35-49 (the all-time record for the program), as well as a 1.14 in Males 50+. The show drew a 0.89 in Males 18-34, which was also up.

The big winner of the night was the 9-Women Gauntlet Match featuring Angelina Love, Taylor Wilde, Velvet Sky, Sojournor Bolt, Roxxi, Madison Rayne, Raisha Saeed, Rhaka Khan and ODB. The match was a big hit as it gained 125,000 viewers, peaking with a 1.33 quarter hour. This number appears to be the highest rated quarter hour in the history of the company — that wasn’t the first quarter coming off a lead-in show such as CSI or UFC with big ratings. I believe a Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong match that aired early last year drew a 1.32 quarter hour, and TNA has definitely never drawn above a 1.35 because it would therefore round up to a 1.4 quarter hour. The show’s rating plummeted following the Knockouts match as viewers tuned out by the droves. The Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley vs. Jay Lethal & Consequences Creed match following the Knockouts lost 195,000 viewers. X Division matches, especially ones featuring the Motor City Machine Guns for some reason, are usually big ratings losers as this isn’t the first time tens of thousands of viewers tuned out during a match featuring them. Viewers continued to tune out as the Beer Money, Inc. vs. Abyss & Rhino match lost 70,000 viewers — bringing the total viewer loss following the Knockouts match to 265,000. The show closing Kurt Angle vs. Sting match drew a slight bump, gaining 14,000 viewers to finish at a 1.15. iMPACT lost nearly 0.2 ratings points following the Knockouts match at the top of the hour.

In other ratings notes, Kurt Angle’s promo with Sting during the second quarter hour lost 14,000 viewers. The Scott Steiner vs. Petey Williams “No DQ Headdress On A Pole Match” gained 56,000 viewers.

Mickey Rourke says he'll be at Wrestlemania

New York Magazine caught up with Mickey Rourke last night at a fashion show in New York City and asked him about his involvement at Wrestlemania. "We're gonna go in support. Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Ric Flair have been such a part of the movie," Rourke said. "So whatever support I can give back to all those people from WWE, I'm gonna do that." When the reporter asked Rourke why he backed out of his rumored match with Chris Jericho, NYMag.com writes that Rourke's publicist jumped in and said, "We don't need to talk about that."[/

    Paul Burchill def. Boogeyman
World Tag Team Champion John Morrison def. Tommy Dreamer
    Tyson Kidd def. local competitor
Christian & Finlay def. ECW Champion Jack Swagger & Mark Henry

SPOKANE, Wash. – ECW Champion Jack Swagger’s post-No Way Out celebration came to a quick halt on ECW on Sci Fi. The returning Christian made it clear he’s after Swagger’s Extreme Title – and he’s ready to claim it next week.

Christian & Finlay def. ECW Champion Jack Swagger & Mark Henry (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After successfully defending his ECW Championship against Finlay at No Way Out, Jack Swagger once again met the fighting Irishman who was joined by Christian This time, despite having Mark Henry in his corner, “The All-American American” lost a bit of his swagger to the returning Superstar.

The tag team match turned into an all-out brawl when Hornswoggle interfered as Henry picked up Christian in an attempt to deliver a World’s Strongest Slam. As the referee was distracted, Finlay bashed Henry in the head with his trusty shillelagh. After taking out Finlay, Swagger tried the gutwrench powerbomb on Christian but failed. It was the first time a Superstar ever got out of Swagger’s gutwrench powerbomb, and it was enough for Christian to get the pinfall for the tag team victory.

Captain Charisma is 2-0 against Swagger. Will Christian’s momentum continue? Can the returning Superstar defeat the cocky “The All-American American” for the ECW Championship? Tune in to ECW on Sci Fi next week to find out.

    Paul Burchill def. Boogeyman (PHOTOS)
In response to Paul Burchill’s Christian Bale-like rant on last week’s WWE Mobile on AT&T, ECW General Manager Theodore Long pitted the British Superstar against Boogeyman on ECW on Sci Fi. Since his return to the Land of the Extreme, Boogeyman was undefeated in singles action. This week, after turning his back to his opponent while reaching for his bag of worms, the Superstar from the Bottomless Pit was rolled up and defeated by Burchill. Despite his loss, Boogeyman still scared Burchill and his sister, Katie Lea, away from the ring, taunting them with his sac of nightcrawlers. How will Booegyman avenge his loss to Burchill? Will the British siblings continue to challenge this mysterious Superstar?

World Tag Team Champion John Morrison def. Tommy Dreamer (PHOTOS)
Still seeking revenge for being mocked by the World Tag Team Champions, Tommy Dreamer met John Morrison in singles action this week. Although The Miz caused a great enough distraction that the referee forced him to leave ringside, the ECW Original was still defeated by the Shaman of Sexy with a Moonlight Drive. Later, Ricky Ortiz offered Dreamer one of his signature Ricky O. Rally Towels and told the ECW Original to “rally up.” Dreamer has vowed to walk away from WWE if he doesn’t win the ECW Championship before his contract expires in June. Will the ECW Original become the king of Extreme? Or will the road end for Dreamer this summer? Or will the road end for Dreamer this summer?

Tyson Kidd def. local competitor (WATCH | PHOTOS)
With Natalya again in his corner, Tyson Kidd  drove his record to 2-0 on ECW on Sci Fi. The newcomer – who is a student of the Hart Family Dungeon, personally trained by Bret “Hit Man” Hart – defeated a local competitor for the second week in a row. Kidd showed off his impressive skills, including a leg drop on the ring apron, which he followed by propelling himself over the top rope, landing a flying elbow drop before the pinfall. What will this new Superstar do next to impress the Land of the Extreme?

    TNA SIGNS KNOCKOUT DARK ANGEL

TNA has signed independent talent, Sarah Stock, according to PWInsider.com. A great Canadian performer, Stock (aka the Dark Angel) has been looked at by TNA for quite some time, but due to her commitments with CMLL out of Mexico, she was unable to be brought in earlier than now.

The departure of Gail Kim has definitely caused TNA to lose some momentum with their Knockout Division. Stock could be the talent to help with that void.

Women’s Champion Melina def. Beth Phoenix to retain
    Rey Mysterio def. Mike Knox
    Kane def. Jamie Noble
Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase & William Regal def. Intercontinental Champion CM Punk & Cryme Tyme

SPOKANE, Wash. – After No Way Out, Raw was in flux, with the World Heavyweight Title having fallen into the clutches of SmackDown’s Edge and Randy Orton continuing his seemingly unstoppable quest to cement his “Legacy” at the expense of the McMahons’. The Legend Killer’s march through the McMahon family continued on Monday night as he punted Shane and RKO’d his sister, Stephanie. Orton’s actions were brutal and vicious enough to draw out Triple H, who rushed down the entrance ramp to tend to the fallen General Manager.

Randy Orton punted Shane McMahon and RKO’d Stephanie; WWE Champion Triple H rushed to the ring to tend to the Raw General Manager
    (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Shane McMahon, eager to avenge his father and put a stop to the horror Randy Orton has rained down on the McMahon family, waited in the ring spoiling for a fight. The Legend Killer didn’t disappoint, immediately engaging Shane O’Mac, trading blows with Mr. McMahon’s son in a brawl that spilled out over the barriers into the audience. Shane had regained the upperhand and was preparing to hit Orton with the Coast-To-Coast when Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase rushed to the ring allowing the Legend Killer to deliver a vicious, game-ending punt, the same maneuver that incapacitated Shane O’Mac’s father.

As Orton stood over his defeated foe, Stephanie McMahon rushed to the ring to tend to her brother. Raw’s General Manager’s attempts to revive Shane McMahon were interrupted by the viper-like Superstar, who struck out at Stephanie, leveling her with a vicious RKO. As Randy Orton stood over two more members of the McMahon family laid low by his actions, none other than WWE Champion Triple H rushed down the ramp, causing the Legend Killer and his “Legacy” to clear the ring.

The Funks, Terry and Dory Jr. to be inducted as part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009
The next inductees to the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009 were announced: The Funks, Terry and Dory Jr. The Texan legends will be inducted by Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes the night before the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania in Houston.

Women’s Champion Melina def. Beth Phoenix to retain (PHOTOS)
In a Women’s Title Match, Beth Phoenix had an opportunity to regain championship gold from her rival, Melina. As usual, The Glamazon was accompanied to the ring both by her beau Santino Marella and her overzealous “intern,” Rosa Mendes. Beth’s crazed No. 1 fan had proven her worth in recent weeks by providing distractions and even involving herself in her idol’s matches. In order to prevent any shady business from Rosa or the Italian Superstar, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James and Candice Michelle arrived mid-match to neutralize Beth’s associates. With the fight truly one-on-one, Melina defeated The Glamazon to retain her title.

Rey Mysterio def. Mike Knox (PHOTOS)
Just 24 hours after they faced one another in a brutal Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Title, Rey Mysterio once again took on the monstrous Mike Knox. Though Mysterio had taken exceptional amounts of damage at No Way Out, participating in the Elimination Chamber from start to finish, the Ultimate Underdog persevered, gaining a pinfall victory over his massive opponent.

Shawn Michaels and JBL to face one another for the right to try and end Undertaker’s 16-0 WrestleMania streak (PHOTOS | WATCH)
As announced on WWE Mobile on AT&T the night prior, JBL appeared on Raw in order to make a historic declaration. The self-proclaimed “wrestling god,” revealed what he believes to be his destiny: Ending Undertaker’s unassailable 16-0 record at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania. The Longhorn Loudmouth’s pontificating was interrupted, however, by the Superstar that defeated him at No Way Out in an All or Nothing Match, JBL’s former employee, Shawn Michaels. The Showstopper revealed that he also desires to face The Phenom at the Grandest Spectacle of Them All, ending that legendary winning streak and reestablishing himself as Mr. WrestleMania. With the two Superstars’ agendas so clearly at odds, they acknowledged that there was only solution: A match between them both on the next Raw, with the winner facing Undertaker at the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

    Kane def. Jamie Noble (PHOTOS)
Jamie Noble took to the Raw ring on Monday night, campaigning for a WrestleMania opportunity for himself. The tenacious Superstar referenced Chavo Guerrero’s 9-second loss to Kane at last year’s show and added that he could personally do better. Noble was next given a chance to prove that statement as his opponent, the Big Red Monster himself emerged. Despite the West Virginia native’s resiliency and technical prowess, the 7-footer was too much for Noble, promptly pinning his opponent.

Chris Jericho beat “Rowdy” Roddy Piper to the mat after the WWE Hall of Famer chastised him
    (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Chris Jericho took to the ring to address the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, imploring them not to give the star of The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke their vote for Best Actor. Segueing, the nefarious Superstar went on to degrade WWE Legends and Hall of Famers, a favorite topic of his in recent weeks. Arriving to take the 2008 Superstar of the Year to task was “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. The WWE Hall of Famer stated his intention to keep giving the WWE Universe what they want, and followed it up with an attack on Jericho. Unfortunately for the “Rowdy” one, the first-ever Undisputed Champion was able to turn the attack around, dropping the WrestleMania veteran before exiting the ring.

Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase & William Regal def. Intercontinental Champion CM Punk & Cryme Tyme (PHOTOS)
Randy Orton’s “Legacy” members, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase joined forces with William Regal on Raw to take on Intercontinental Champion CM Punk & Cryme Tyme in a Six-Man Tag Team Match. In spite of an impressive performance from the Intercontinental Champion, especially in some hard-fought moments with the British Brawler, his team wasn’t able to obtain victory. Ultimately, it was DiBiase who pinned JTG for the win.

Shane McMahon challenged Randy Orton to an Unsanctioned Fight
In the locker room area, Shane McMahon announced that his No Holds Barred Match against Randy Orton at No Way Out was only the beginning. Shane O’Mac, still suffering from injuries that necessitated him being hospitalized the night before, went on to challenge the venomous Superstar to an Unsanctioned Fight that won’t end until one of the competitors is no longer moving.

John Cena made clear his intention to win back the World Heavyweight Title from new World Heavyweight Champion Edge (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Raw was opened by one of the WWE Universe’s most reviled couples: New World Heavyweight Champion Edge and the General Manager of SmackDown, Vickie Guerrero. The SmackDown Superstar made this special appearance on Raw in order to gloat, showing off his championship gold, as Vickie explained the circumstances that led to her husband participating and winning the World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber Match. Though Edge lost the WWE Championship earlier in the night, he was able to pilfer a spot in the Raw Elimination Chamber by attacking Kofi Kingston and slipping into his pod. The Master Manipulator’s preening was interrupted by John Cena, however, who proceeded to inform Edge that he plans on getting back his World Heavyweight Title.

Matt Hardy Blogt over Jeff Hardy

Matt Hardy Blogs About Jeff Hardy

    source: PWInsider.com

Matt Hardy has posted a blog talking about why he didn't interfere with Jeff Hardy's involvement in last night's Elimination Chamber Match. Hardy wrote: "At No Way Out in Seattle, I gave you the opportunity to win the WWE Title inside of the Elimination Chamber. I listened very closely to what you had to say on Smackdown last week. You said you were going to "move on" and win the WWE Title regardless of what I wanted. You also mentioned that you hoped this issue between us will one day pass over.

So from the bottom of my heart, I didn't interfere with your Elimination Chamber appearance and/or match. Nor did I need to.. You failed like you always do. I wanted to reinforce to everyone what a failure you truly are-how you can never pull through and succeed in a "big time" atmosphere. How you always choke. It's nothing new though."

Hardy added: "I'm afraid the WWE is not big enough for the both of us. I recommend you do the smartest thing possible for your life and livelihood right now. And that's walk out of the WWE and my life. You have until Friday to make your decision."

-- The crowd was very hot for this show. Jeff Hardy and John Cena got the biggest pops of the night.

-- A "We Want Christian" chant broke out at the beginning of the ECW title match. This was the only match that the crowd was not that into.

ROBERT ROODE TEKENT NIEUW CONTRACT BIJ TNA
    Robert Roode
TNA Wrestling and Robert Roode have agreed to terms on a new contract reports ProWrestling.net. If Roode has yet to officially sign the new deal then the belief is that it is merely a formality right now.

According to earlier reports, WWE had interest in signing Roode. Roode’s deal with TNA had been set to expire in either March or April of this year. Roode was trained in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario, by fellow Canadians Val Venis and Shane Sewell. He worked for indy promotions all over Canada as Bobby Rude before being signed by TNA. He debuted in the company as a part of the Team Canada stable in the summer of 2004. After the break up of Team Canada, Roode began referring to himself as "TNA's hottest free agent" and transitioned into his Robert Roode Inc. gimmick with Ms. Brooks before joining James Storm as one half of the team Beer Money Inc. It appears the interest from WWE never led to a formal contract offer.

Triple H vs. Undertaker vs. Big Show vs. Vladimir Kozlov (No contest) (Fatal Four Way Match)

FRESNO, Calif. – Just two days before No Way Out, four of the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match participants fought it out in a Fatal Four Way, while another made his heroic return to SmackDown. But, in the midst of the pomp and circumstance, the opportunistic WWE Champion once again found a way to come out on top and steal the thunder from all of them.

Triple H vs. Undertaker vs. Big Show vs. Vladimir Kozlov (No contest) (Fatal Four Way Match) (WATCH | PHOTOS)
WWE Champion Edge placed the blame for the neck injury he claimed to have sustained one week ago at  the hands of Undertaker squarely on the shoulders of his tag team partner, Big Show. SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero wasted no time announcing that she would not risk her husband competing until No Way Out this Sunday. However, after Big Show interrupted them and exchanged harsh words with the champion, Guerrero had no trouble informing him that he would be in a Fatal Four Way Match with three of his Elimination Chamber opponents: The Game, the Moscow Mauler, and The Phenom. (WATCH | PHOTOS)

In the critical climax of the grueling back and forth battle between four of WWE’s most dominant Superstars, the Ultimate Opportunist suddenly dove into the action, spearing The World’s Largest Athlete to snatch the momentum heading into No Way Out.

Jeff Hardy returns to SmackDown (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Seemingly recovered from the shocking attack by his brother Matt Hardy that cost him his WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble several weeks ago, Jeff Hardy made his return to SmackDown. Although he acknowledged that the events of recent weeks have affected him deeply, he told the WWE Universe that he intends to look forward, and is 100 percent focused on regaining his gold at No Way Out this Sunday.

Don’t miss the punishment, as all six Superstars battle for the WWE Championship in the dreaded 16-foot-high, 10-ton ominous steel structure of the Elimination Chamber at No Way Out this Sunday. (Match Preview)

Montel Vontavious Porter def. Chavo Guerrero (DQ) (Photos)
After Chavo Guerrero eliminated MVP in last week’s SmackDown Battle Royal, the reinvigorated Franchise Playa’ was out for some payback. But, just as he was rallying from a hard-fought match, United States Champion Shelton Benjamin emerged from nowhere to deliver Pay Dirt, getting some retribution of his own after losing to MVP in a non-title match last week. However, this gave MVP the win by disqualification, continuing his winning streak. The self-proclaimed “Mexican warrior,” Chavo Guerrero decided to add insult to injury, hitting the unconscious Ballin’ Superstar with the Frog Splash and raising his own arms in victory.

World Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison def. WWE Tag Team Champions Carlito & Primo (Photos)
Carlito and Primo failed to get Nikki & Brie Bella flowers for Valentine’s Day. But, Miz & Morrison did not. This prompted a match to determine which tag team champions would take out the Bella Twins on Valentine’s Day night. With the referee distracted, Miz threw Primo from the top rope, setting up Morrison for the victory. Following the loss, Nikki & Brie exited ringside with the “Dirt Sheet” duo, leaving Carlito & Primo without the win or the Divas.

    Maria def. Michelle McCool (Photos)
After being attacked weeks ago by Michelle McCool, Maria was out to even the score. Michelle, however, had every intention of continuing her vicious wrath upon SmackDown Divas, targeting Maria’s injured ankle throughout their match. After her loss in debut singles action to McCool last week, Eve charged down the entrance ramp to help her friend Maria in any way she could. Michelle immediately started bullying the 2007 Diva Search winner, but Eve would not back down. However, the distraction created when McCool threw Eve into the ring allowed Maria to roll the former Divas Champion up for the three-count.

    R-Truth def. Ezekiel Jackson  (Photos)
Despite a powerful onslaught by the intimidating Jackson, R-Truth ended Ezekiel’s undefeated record, reversing The Brian Kendrick’s associate’s ura-nage finisher for the quick pin.
