SmackDown results: Opportunity lost and found
By: Michael Burdick April 15, 2011
Tags: SmackDown: April 15, 2011, Edge, Christian
ALBANY, New York – Four days after World Heavyweight Champion Edge announced his shocking retirement from WWE, The Rated-R Superstar officially surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship. And Christian honored his lifelong friend by capturing the opportunity to face No. 1 contender Alberto Del Rio for the vacant World Title at Extreme Rules.

Christian triumphed in a No. 1 Contender’s World Heavyweight Championship Battle Royal (WATCH | PHOTOS)
With Alberto Del Rio sitting ringside, Christian heroically outlasted 19 other Superstars to become his aristocratic adversary’s opponent in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules that will decide the next World Heavyweight Champion (Match preview).

As Captain Charisma battled former World Champion Jack Swagger in the final moments of the mega Battle Royal, Del Rio grabbed Christian’s ankle, trying to eliminate the former ECW Champion from outside the ring. Aggressively freeing himself from his interfering foe, Christian lowered the ropes, sending the charging All-American American crashing down to his defeat. As the smoke cleared, Edge himself emerged to congratulate his former tag team partner on his monumental accomplishment.

The intense Battle Royal also saw WWE Tag Team Champion Justin Gabriel eliminate fellow Corre member Wade Barrett – just moments after they worked together to get rid of the monstrous Kane. Although he started strong by eliminating three Superstars, Big Show’s momentum sent both him and Ezekiel Jackson over the ropes and out of contention. And Rey Mysterio eliminated his bitter adversary Cody Rhodes, shortly before Michael Cole sacrificed his body to The Ultimate Underdog’s 619 in order to save his Extreme Rules tag team partner Jack Swagger from taking the hit.

Kelly Kelly def. Layla (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Despite a tumultuous session of “couples counseling,” a noticeably annoyed Michelle McCool accompanied Layla to her single’s match. When Kelly Kelly gained the advantage over the English-born Diva outside the ring, Michelle opted to throw her war-torn partner-in-flawless back into action. This allowed Kelly Kelly to roll the disoriented beauty up for the three-count. After the match, Michelle shoved Layla to the canvas and exited alone.

Edge surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In one of the most heartfelt moments in SmackDown history, Edge emerged to relinquish the World Heavyweight Title. Displaying an extremely positive attitude in the face of his forced retirement, the 11-time World Champion thanked every member of the WWE Universe and stepped out of the spotlight. For more on Edge’s extraordinary career, click here.
Rey Mysterio def. Drew McIntyre (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In an extremely vicious showdown between Rey Mysterio and Drew McIntyre, The Ultimate Underdog overcame the sheer brutality of The Sinister Scotsman, hitting a 619-splash combination for the victory.

Rey Mysterio attacked Cody Rhodes (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Despite Cody Rhodes’ victory over Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania, the bitter Superstar made it clear that he won’t let his obsession with The Master of the 619 go. Mysterio soon charged to the ring, sending the self-conscious second-generation Superstar away with a 619 to his mid-section.

Ezekiel Jackson def. Kofi Kingston (WATCH | PHOTOS)
While Ezekiel Jackson competed in an intense match with Kofi Kingston, his fellow Corre members sat in with the SmackDown announce team, displaying obvious friction with each other. When “The Personification of Domination” hurled his high-flying opponent directly on top of his faction brethren, Wade Barrett rushed toward the ring in an absolute rage. This distraction allowed Jackson to hurl Kofi to the canvas and pick up the huge win.

GM Theodore Long decided the future of the World Heavyweight Championship (PHOTOS)
Just four days after Edge announced that a serious injury was forcing him to retire from WWE, the No. 1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship Alberto Del Rio came forth, suggesting that The Rated-R Superstar present him with title.

SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long informed the elitist Superstar that instead, his new opponent for the World Title Ladder Match at Extreme Rules would be determined in a 20-Man Over-the-Top-Rope Battle Royal. Del Rio then proclaimed that he is glad to be the Superstar that forced Edge to retire.

Mickie James on Her Injury, Edge Retiring, More

Mickie James on Her Injury, Edge Retiring, More
Posted by Steve Carrier on 04/15/2011 at 01:25 PM

Busted Open satellite radio show with Mickie James
Hosts: Dave LaGreca and Doug Mortman
Airs Mondays and Wednesdays on Sirius 125 and XM 241 from 2-4 ET
    Visit Facebook.com/bustedopen for more information

James on her match at Lockdown and wrestling with a separated shoulder: "I’m really excited about it. I’m going in there with a separated shoulder and hopefully be able to tough through the match. I’m feeling better every day honestly and trying to get more range of motion back and I definitely hope physically to be 100 percent. I don’t think my shoulder will be 100 percent but luckily it’s my left shoulder and I’m a righty, so that kind of helps."

James reflects on the tremendous cage match she had with Tara on Impact a few months back: "That match with Tara was the first cage match I’ve ever been in. That was definitely a very scary thing. I don’t think I thought about it beforehand how high the cage actually is and how scary it is. You see the guys do the crazy stuff like that all the time and its like they think nothing of it…..or maybe the same things running through their mind when actually they get up there and they go ‘Oh God, this is really high!’. There definitely is a lot of pressure because it was such an amazing match in itself…..to be able to compete against myself in the same kind of match and going in kind of injured anyways, it’s definitely one of those things that I have to be aware of and be careful of."

Mickie's thoughts on Edge’s retirement due to injury: "He’s really just a genuinely nice guy. I have nothing but the upmost respect for him and what he’s done in this industry and the legacy he has built for himself. Before him, the whole ladders match thing with him and the Hardys and that Edge and Christian phase….that was really a raising the bar level on that whole deal and just everything he’s done since then.

"It’s sad that due to injured he has to retire due to the fact that it has taken a huge toll on his body but at least I think it’s very intelligent of him and it’s a huge pride swallowing thing to recognize the fact that ‘I can’t physically do this, I’m putting my life on the line, it’s not just my body anymore.’. And for him to have to do that and I’m sure its not something that he wanted to do at this moment in time and it was something that we all have to come to terms with, we all can’t wrestle forever…..but I think that he is so talented that theres many other things that he can do that’s gonna continue to keep him out and about and doing things."

James n Kurt Angle re-signing with TNA: "I love Kurt. He’s awesome. He’s got so much going for him with the Angle Foods thing and that’s starting to take off and it’s a really cool thing. He has such a name for himself anyways and to be the only male to hold an Olympic gold medal, everything he’s already done……I’m sure he doesn’t have to continue to wrestle but he just loves it so much. He has such a huge passion and love for this business. It’s just amazing. I think we’re very honored to have him as a part of the roster."

Mickie’s mid-term report card on TNA (with her being on the roster for about six months or so now): "I’m having a blast. It was definitely something that I was still on the fence whether or not I should go or not and what I was going to be able to bring or do that is different than anybody else has already done. It’s been a fun journey, a cool locker room, I’ve made some cool friends and I’ve been able to do some really compelling stuff and raise the bar even for myself. To be able to main event Impact, and do my first cage match, and have a cool storyline with Tara go on to Madison and have a compelling storyline with her as well…..I think it’s really…..brought a different spice to the show. Hopefully, they (TNA) feel the same."

More on HHH's Changes for WWE

    - WWE introducing Awesome Kong through vignettes is part of Triple H's philosophy of wanting to build fans' anticipation for new characters, as opposed to just having them show up on TV.

As noted before, Triple H is taking over the developmental process of the company and it's expected his changes will begin within a week or two.

Among the changes is the fact that he will take charge sooner than later of who is brought up to the main roster and not bringing guys up before they are ready.

We begin with a look at Maryse and her issues with Ted DiBiase. We also see how Yoshi Tatsu and Lucky Cannon have been hitting on Maryse because of the problems between Ted and Maryse.

We are live on tape from the internet and your announcers are Todd ‘Could Michael Cole retire too’ Grisham and William ‘Sunshine on your Tuesday Night’ Regal. Your hosts are Matt ‘After tonight, is it a plus one’ Striker and Maryse.

Matt Striker is in on the stage and he welcomes everyone to NXT. He brings out Maryse and Regal and Todd wonder what her decision is. Matt asks Maryse the big question. Maryse tell Matt to look at her. Nobody tell her what to do. She had lot of millionaires before Ted DiBiase and she can have a lot of millionaire after Ted DiBiase. If she has to choose the show or Ted, she chooses NXT.

It is time to bring out the rookies.

Todd sees Bryon’s ‘Saxout’ t-shirt and thinks it has to do with playing the saxophone.

Titus O’Neill has 9 points, Darren Young has 7 points, and Byron Saxton has 4 points. The other three rookies are looking for their first points.

This challenge is the Power of the Punch challenge and the highest score wins 4 points.

Regal wonders if he gets royalties from the phrase ‘power of the punch’.

Byron Saxton goes first and his total is 649.

Maryse tells Jacob that he can do better and please be a man. Jacob whiffs and he gets a 456.

Matt points out that William Regal would not be proud of Jacob.

Darren Young is next and his total is 469.

Maryse and Todd both say that they could do better than some of the rookies.

Conor O’Brian is next and his total is 770.

Titus O’Neill is next and his score is 801 and he is in the lead.

There is only one man left and it is Lucky Cannon. Lucky does not take his robe off and he tells Matt that he is above this. He says that he is not here to play games, he is here to win championships.

Lucky gets disqualified and that means that your winner is Titus O’Neill and he now has 13 Redemption Points.

Lucky takes the mic from Matt and he says that this show is about him. He tells Maryse that she needs a man on her level and he says that he is that person.

Yoshi Tatsu comes out and Lucky wants to know what is wrong with him and he wonders if Ted knocked some sense into his skull. Lucky suggests that since he is main event talent, why not main event NXT tonight.

Yoshi accepts the challenge and then Lucky invites Maryse to watch from ringside.

It is time to take a look at the movie That’s What I Am featuring Randy Orton.

    We go to commercial.

We are back and Did You Know that over 26,000 autographs were signed during Wrestlemania week.

We see footage from last week when Titus O’Neill and Hornswoggle defeated Darren Young and Chavo Guerrero.

Darren asks Hornswoggle if he lost his mind because he is an NXT superstar. He says that all Hornswoggle is is a bootleg leprechaun. The ring is made for full sized athletes, not pint sized jokes. Chavo tells Darren to calm down.

Match Number One: Titus O”Neill with Hornswoggle versus Darren Young with Chavo Guerrero

They lock up and O’Neill sends Darren to the mat. Titus backs Darren into the corner but Darren with kicks and forearms followed by a snap mare and leg drop. Young with a chop to the chest followed by a near fall. Young with a reverse chin lock. Young with a knee drop but O’Neill with punches but Young with a back elbow for a near fall. Young with a cravate on Titus.

Titus backs Darren into the corner and Titus with punches and a European uppercut followed by a clothesline. Titus barks followed by a flying clothesline. Darren sends Titus into the turnbuckles and then he kicks and punches him. Chavo tells Darren to focus on Titus and not Hornswoggle. Darren tries to kick Hornswoggle but he moves out of the way. O’Neill takes advantage and gets the three count with a rollup.

    Winner: Titus O’Neill

After the match, Young attacks Titus and hits a gutbuster from a fireman’s carry position. Chavo tells Darren to ignore Hornswoggle but Darren grabs Hornswoggle. Chavo tells Darren to listen to him and not bother with Hornswoggle because his problem is with Titus. Chavo tells Darren to let him go and he does.

    We go to commercial.

We are back and JTG comes out and then we look at the bet between JTG and Vladimir Kozlov last week.

JTG is in the ring and he introduces his rookie ‘Head Crack Novak aka Mr Redemption; Jacob comes out to the ring and he looks like a white version of Shad Gaspard. The crowd is shocked at the new look Jacob Novak.

Jacob tells JTG that he feels like there are a lot more pros in WWE who could make him a star. With him, it has been five weeks and he hasn’t earned a single redemption point. Jacob says that he doesn’t even like the Yankees. He says that he knows how people feel about him and he knows how Mr. Regal feels about him too. Jacob says that he knows that if Regal had time with him, he could make him a star. Jacob asks Regal what he thinks.

Regal does not respond and then Novak says that he has been doing a lot of talking and now he will show Regal what it means to be a star.

Regal says that the last thing that Novak wants him to do is get into that ring and turn him into a bloody vegetable.

    We go to commercial.

Match Number Two: Jacob Novak with JTG versus Byron Saxton with Yoshi Tatsu

Saxton blocks a kick and then he hits a back elbow and then he takes Novak’s bandana and he hits a side Russian leg sweep. Saxton clotheslines Novak over the top rope to the floor. Saxton goes to the apron but Novak trips Saxton on the apron. Novak gets a near fall on Saxton and then he kicks Saxton in the ribs. Novak drops Saxton on the top rope and he gets a near fall.

Novak with a knee to the midsection or two and he gets a near fall. Novak with a body scissors and Saxton tries to escape and he does with an elbow. Novak with a head butt to the midsection. Saxton with a leaping flatline followed by a running forearm. Saxton with a knee and bulldog for a near fall.

Novak with punches but Saxton runs Novak into the turnbuckles. Saxton punches Novak from the turnbuckles but Novak pushes Saxton off and Saxton hits the ropes. Novak with a few kicks for the three count.

    Winner: Jacob Novak

    We go to commercial.

We are back and William Regal comments on Edge’s sudden announcement of his retirement. We go back to Monday night for Edge’s announcement.

We are back and Maryse joins the announce table and she kisses Todd.

Match Number Three: Lucky Cannon versus Yoshi Tatsu

Lucky has something to say to Yoshi and then he pie faces Lucky. Yoshi with a chop but Yoshi is sent into the ropes and Lucky kicks him. Lucky with a neck breaker or two and he gets a near fall. Lucky with a figure four head scissors and he uses the ropes for extra leverage. Lucky with a kick to the head.

Lucky with a snap mare and then he kicks Yoshi in the head. Yoshi is sent to the floor and Lucky goes after him and Lucky tells Maryse to choose him and not the chump. Lucky punches the chump a few times. Yoshi sends Lucky into the ring post and then they return to the ring.

Yoshi drops Lucky on the top rope and then Yoshi with chops followed by a series of kicks. Lucky sends Yoshi to the apron but Yoshi with a kick to the head and then Yoshi goes up top for the spinning heel kick and he gets the three count.

    Winner: Yoshi Tatsu

After the match, Maryse goes into the ring and she tells Lucky that he was not Lucky. Then she kisses Yoshi and Yoshi acts like he won the lottery.

    We go to credits.

Ratings Are In For RAW & Tough Enough
Posted by Dave Mitchell on 04/12/2011 at 07:50 PM

The ratings are in for Monday's episodes of WWE RAW and WWE Tough Enough - and both shows are down from the prior week's post-WrestleMania shows.

    - Monday's WWE RAW drew a 3.45 rating, down 10% from last week's 3.82.

This week's 2-hour broadcast averaged 5.45 million viewers, down only 3% from last week's 5.60 million viewers.

This week's first hour drew a 3.37 rating (5.34 million viewers) and the second hour drew a 3.52 (5.56 million viewers).

    - Monday's episode of Tough Enough in the new 8pm timeslot (before RAW) drew a 1.81 rating, down 27% from last week's premier, which drew a 2.51.

This week's viewership was 2.79 million viewers, down 16% from last week's 3.33 million viewers.

Overall, not a bad showing this week for for WWE. A slight drop from the post-WrestleMania shows was expected, but the numbers held on pretty strong.

Hulk Hogan: "if any of the guys like me, Flair, Hardy, Andre, AA, Blanchard, orndoff, Henning would have listened to doctors we would have quit15yrsago, but I don't know Edges working environment because they are a media company not a wrestling company. HH wrestlers work hurt!"

After receiving criticism for his remarks, Hogan clarified his opinion.

"I'm not saying anything bad about Edge but he's a real wrestler,Stone Cold and Cena had neck surgery and u couldn't stop em,Or Edge it's in Edges blood,he lives for this business he's a real wrestler,he a lifer,he's one of the real boys,he's hard to hold down, that's all. HH"

    Backstage News on Sin Cara

     Backstage News on Sin Cara

    - Vince McMahon was said to be furious at Sin Cara's botched entrance on RAW last week when he attacked Sheamus. When the botch happened on RAW last night, there were guys watching monitors in the back that were joking around that "that was it" for Cara and Primo would probably be fired out of spite.

Breaking News: Edge Retiring From WWE

On Monday's episode of WWE RAW, World Heavyweight champion Edge announced that he is retiring from the squared circle.

According to sources in WWE, Edge's retirement announcement is 100% legitimate and not a television storyline.

Edge said that he recently had his neck checked out and the results were not good. This is also a legitimate issue and not a storyline.

From what we're hearing - Edge was told he could go out in the ring and say whatever he wanted.
