SmackDown results: Opportunity lost and found By: Michael Burdick April 15, 2011 Tags: SmackDown: April 15, 2011, Edge, Christian ALBANY, New York Four days after World Heavyweight Champion Edge announced his shocking retirement from WWE, The Rated-R Superstar officially surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship. And Christian honored his lifelong friend by capturing the opportunity to face No. 1 contender Alberto Del Rio for the vacant World Title at Extreme Rules.
Christian triumphed in a No. 1 Contenders World Heavyweight Championship Battle Royal (WATCH | PHOTOS) With Alberto Del Rio sitting ringside, Christian heroically outlasted 19 other Superstars to become his aristocratic adversarys opponent in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules that will decide the next World Heavyweight Champion (Match preview).
As Captain Charisma battled former World Champion Jack Swagger in the final moments of the mega Battle Royal, Del Rio grabbed Christians ankle, trying to eliminate the former ECW Champion from outside the ring. Aggressively freeing himself from his interfering foe, Christian lowered the ropes, sending the charging All-American American crashing down to his defeat. As the smoke cleared, Edge himself emerged to congratulate his former tag team partner on his monumental accomplishment.
The intense Battle Royal also saw WWE Tag Team Champion Justin Gabriel eliminate fellow Corre member Wade Barrett just moments after they worked together to get rid of the monstrous Kane. Although he started strong by eliminating three Superstars, Big Shows momentum sent both him and Ezekiel Jackson over the ropes and out of contention. And Rey Mysterio eliminated his bitter adversary Cody Rhodes, shortly before Michael Cole sacrificed his body to The Ultimate Underdogs 619 in order to save his Extreme Rules tag team partner Jack Swagger from taking the hit.
Kelly Kelly def. Layla (WATCH | PHOTOS) Despite a tumultuous session of couples counseling, a noticeably annoyed Michelle McCool accompanied Layla to her singles match. When Kelly Kelly gained the advantage over the English-born Diva outside the ring, Michelle opted to throw her war-torn partner-in-flawless back into action. This allowed Kelly Kelly to roll the disoriented beauty up for the three-count. After the match, Michelle shoved Layla to the canvas and exited alone.
Edge surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship (WATCH | PHOTOS) In one of the most heartfelt moments in SmackDown history, Edge emerged to relinquish the World Heavyweight Title. Displaying an extremely positive attitude in the face of his forced retirement, the 11-time World Champion thanked every member of the WWE Universe and stepped out of the spotlight. For more on Edges extraordinary career, click here. Rey Mysterio def. Drew McIntyre (WATCH | PHOTOS) In an extremely vicious showdown between Rey Mysterio and Drew McIntyre, The Ultimate Underdog overcame the sheer brutality of The Sinister Scotsman, hitting a 619-splash combination for the victory.
Rey Mysterio attacked Cody Rhodes (WATCH | PHOTOS) Despite Cody Rhodes victory over Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania, the bitter Superstar made it clear that he wont let his obsession with The Master of the 619 go. Mysterio soon charged to the ring, sending the self-conscious second-generation Superstar away with a 619 to his mid-section.
Ezekiel Jackson def. Kofi Kingston (WATCH | PHOTOS) While Ezekiel Jackson competed in an intense match with Kofi Kingston, his fellow Corre members sat in with the SmackDown announce team, displaying obvious friction with each other. When The Personification of Domination hurled his high-flying opponent directly on top of his faction brethren, Wade Barrett rushed toward the ring in an absolute rage. This distraction allowed Jackson to hurl Kofi to the canvas and pick up the huge win.
GM Theodore Long decided the future of the World Heavyweight Championship (PHOTOS) Just four days after Edge announced that a serious injury was forcing him to retire from WWE, the No. 1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship Alberto Del Rio came forth, suggesting that The Rated-R Superstar present him with title.
SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long informed the elitist Superstar that instead, his new opponent for the World Title Ladder Match at Extreme Rules would be determined in a 20-Man Over-the-Top-Rope Battle Royal. Del Rio then proclaimed that he is glad to be the Superstar that forced Edge to retire.
Mickie James on Her Injury, Edge Retiring, More Posted by Steve Carrier on 04/15/2011 at 01:25 PM
Busted Open satellite radio show with Mickie James Hosts: Dave LaGreca and Doug Mortman Airs Mondays and Wednesdays on Sirius 125 and XM 241 from 2-4 ET Visit Facebook.com/bustedopen for more information
James on her match at Lockdown and wrestling with a separated shoulder: "Im really excited about it. Im going in there with a separated shoulder and hopefully be able to tough through the match. Im feeling better every day honestly and trying to get more range of motion back and I definitely hope physically to be 100 percent. I dont think my shoulder will be 100 percent but luckily its my left shoulder and Im a righty, so that kind of helps."
James reflects on the tremendous cage match she had with Tara on Impact a few months back: "That match with Tara was the first cage match Ive ever been in. That was definitely a very scary thing. I dont think I thought about it beforehand how high the cage actually is and how scary it is. You see the guys do the crazy stuff like that all the time and its like they think nothing of it ..or maybe the same things running through their mind when actually they get up there and they go Oh God, this is really high!. There definitely is a lot of pressure because it was such an amazing match in itself ..to be able to compete against myself in the same kind of match and going in kind of injured anyways, its definitely one of those things that I have to be aware of and be careful of."
Mickie's thoughts on Edges retirement due to injury: "Hes really just a genuinely nice guy. I have nothing but the upmost respect for him and what hes done in this industry and the legacy he has built for himself. Before him, the whole ladders match thing with him and the Hardys and that Edge and Christian phase .that was really a raising the bar level on that whole deal and just everything hes done since then.
"Its sad that due to injured he has to retire due to the fact that it has taken a huge toll on his body but at least I think its very intelligent of him and its a huge pride swallowing thing to recognize the fact that I cant physically do this, Im putting my life on the line, its not just my body anymore.. And for him to have to do that and Im sure its not something that he wanted to do at this moment in time and it was something that we all have to come to terms with, we all cant wrestle forever ..but I think that he is so talented that theres many other things that he can do thats gonna continue to keep him out and about and doing things."
James n Kurt Angle re-signing with TNA: "I love Kurt. Hes awesome. Hes got so much going for him with the Angle Foods thing and thats starting to take off and its a really cool thing. He has such a name for himself anyways and to be the only male to hold an Olympic gold medal, everything hes already done Im sure he doesnt have to continue to wrestle but he just loves it so much. He has such a huge passion and love for this business. Its just amazing. I think were very honored to have him as a part of the roster."
Mickies mid-term report card on TNA (with her being on the roster for about six months or so now): "Im having a blast. It was definitely something that I was still on the fence whether or not I should go or not and what I was going to be able to bring or do that is different than anybody else has already done. Its been a fun journey, a cool locker room, Ive made some cool friends and Ive been able to do some really compelling stuff and raise the bar even for myself. To be able to main event Impact, and do my first cage match, and have a cool storyline with Tara go on to Madison and have a compelling storyline with her as well ..I think its really ..brought a different spice to the show. Hopefully, they (TNA) feel the same."

- WWE introducing Awesome Kong through vignettes is part of Triple H's philosophy of wanting to build fans' anticipation for new characters, as opposed to just having them show up on TV.
As noted before, Triple H is taking over the developmental process of the company and it's expected his changes will begin within a week or two.
Among the changes is the fact that he will take charge sooner than later of who is brought up to the main roster and not bringing guys up before they are ready.
This episode was built around the final 3 rounds of the New Years Evil Tournament for the WCW World Tag Team Championship.
The teams are...
Kevin Nash & Scott Steiner (who beat Te Wall and Sid Vicious) PG-13 (who beat Berlyn & Rick Steiner) Ron & Don Harris (who beat Meng & Fit Finlay) Mike Rotunda & Roadkill (who beat Dean Malenko & Konnan) Buff Bagwell & Chris Kanyon (who beat Disco Inferno & Big Vito) Asya & Screamin Norman Smiley (who beat Jim Duggan & Perry Saturn) Midnight & Lash LeRoux (who beat Harlem Heat) David Flair & Crowbar (who beat Vampiro & Evan Karagias)
