HOW? TAPs is totally and only depending on sponsoring and own limited sources WHY? Because African common people are poor and we are not. Because good citizenship includes helping out and sharing

HOE? TAPs is totaal en enkel afhankelijk van sponsoring en eigen beperkte middelen WAAROM? Omdat het Afrikaanse volk arm is en wij niet. Omdat burgerzin helpen en delen impliceert

On TAPs payed a visit to The FABALOUM Nursery School. It is a little school in a district of Brikama (the Gambia) called Sintchu Alhagie, near Costal Road. It was a construction of wood and corrugates.
It was built by the teacher,Mrs Bassin Loum, with the means available. Bassin is a very dedicated teacher who tries her best under rather difficult circumstances.
Bassin applied for a building permit and TAPs started organizing the works. The building will be finished early October, but we had to cut on expences. (see open book-keeping) The estimation of the costs was 585750 Dalasis which means 15620 euro. We reduced the costs to approximately 250000 Dalasis which means appr. 9000 euro. We had to leave out the sanitary block, tiled floors, and electrical installations, but we keep up high hopes for further sponsoring. For this project, TAPs used 2500 euro of the sponsor money. When we started building, the total amount of sponsor money was 3930 euro.
Jammel is a small village (60 inhabitants) about 60 kilometers from Podor (Poudor) in the North of Senegal. The people are depending on their harvest and their cattle. During the rainy season (June - October) they farm mainly onions, ocra, casava and corn which they sell at the markets. The little profits they have go to transport, rice and fabrics. The village moves bit by bit: after every rainy season, people rebuild their huts next to old one; as they are made of mud and clay, they don`t last. In short enough time they will have to face a problem. Foreign multinationals are buying the land on which they live and farm. Unless there is a concrete building on it, the government can drive them away. In order to prevent this from happening, TAPs wants to build concrete houses as many as possible. Already one house has been built. To build a two room concrete house, it takes appr. 550 euro.In November, TAPs will visit Jammel again.
Up till recently, people could farm where ever they wanted. This is about to change in the near future. The scenario is similar: multinationals already started buying land. Unless the farmers can show proof of ownership, they will have to pay rent in order to continue farming. That will force them into the system of micro credits, which will put them in debts for the rest of their lifes. TAPs wants to buy enough land to support the village. Note: TAPs will not be the owner of the land: TAPs only provides the funds. TAPs already financed 1 farming field of 100 m2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jammel is een klein dorp (60 inwoners) op ongeveer 60 km afstand van Podor (Poudor) in het noorden van Senegal. De mensen zijn afhankelijk van hun oogst en hun vee. Tijdens het regenseizoen (juni-oktober) telen ze voornamelijk uien, okra, casava en mais. De oogst wordt op de markten verkocht. De luttele opbrengst gaat naar transport, rijst en stoffen. Het dorp schuift beetje bij beetje op: na een regenseizoen worden de weg geregende hutten weer opgetrokken, vlak naast de oude. De hutten, opgetrokken uit klei en modder, zijn een kort leven beschoren. Binnen afzienbare tijd zal dit een probleem worden. Buitenlandse multinationals kopen het land waarop de inwoners wonen en aan landbouw doen systematisch op. Tenzij er een stenen gebouw op staat, kan de overheid onteigenen. Om dit te voorkomen, wil TAPs zoveel mogelijk huizen bouwen. We hebben er al 1 klaar. Kostprijs van een twee kamerwoning: ong 550 euro. In november gaat TAPs terug naar Jammel.
Tot voor kort konden de inwoners aan landbouw doen waar ze wilden. Dit zal binnen afzienbare tijd veranderen. Het scenario is gelijkaardig: multinationals zijn al begonnen met de aankoop van grond. Tenzij de inwoners een eigendomsbewijs kunnen voorleggen, zullen ze in de toekomst pacht moeten betalen. Dit zal hen in het microkredietsysteem dwingen, wat zal resulteren in een nooit af te lossen schuldenberg. TAPs wil grond voldoende landbouwgrond aankopen voor de inwoners van Jammel. Let wel: TAPs voorziet enkel de middelen: de eigendomsakten zullen op naam staan van de dorpelingen. Awa Sonko is born on January 8th 2003 and is the daughter of Foday and Fatoumata Sonko-Conteh. Awa has 4 brothers and sisters. They live in the center of Bakau, near the market. Foday is trying to make a living by driving a taxi, but it is hard to earn some money, especially since tourism dropped down. Awa is a student from the Bakau Lower Basic School. She gets sponsored by Xavier and Sophie Preux for the rest of her school career. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Awa Sonko is geboren op 8 januari 2003 en is de dochter van Foday en Fatoumata Sonko-Conteh. Awa heeft 4 broers en zusjes. Ze wonen in het centrum van Bakau, vlakbij de markt. Foday werkt als taxichauffeur, maar het is moeilijk om de eindjes aan mekaar te knopen, vooral sinds het toerisme op een laag pitje staat. Awa loopt school aan de Bakau Lagere Basisschool. Ze wordt gesponsord door Xavier en Sophie Preux tot ze afgestudeerd is.
In December 2010, we met Ousman Jayjou (5 years old) who got expelled from school because his mother could no longer afford his school fees. It only took a visit to the school to make some inquiries and to sort the problem out. After paying the fees for the rest of the terms, it took Ousman only 5 minutes to get ready for school. After 10 minutes, he was sitting in his classroom again. For the lasting terms, TAPs payed 1200 Dalasis (appr. 30 euro) In June 2011, TAPs went to visit Ousman again. He was doing just great. TAPs payed the fees for the next school year, an amount of 1750 Dalasis (appr. 45 euro). This includes books, examination fees, education for 1 year. In order to make sure the money goes to the education of the child, TAPs hands it over directly to the headmaster of the school. TAPs will sponsor Ousman until his graduation. Ousman`s present school : Salvation Nursery School Latrikunda Sabiji (Kanifing district). His mother is Anta Ba (tel. on request)

Voor de resterende trimesters betaalde TAPs 1200 Dalasis (ong. 30 euro) In juni 2011 ging TAPs Ousman nogmaals bezoeken. Hij stelde het wel en was geslaagd. TAPs betaalde het schoolgeld voor het volgende schooljaar, wat neerkomt op 1750 Dalasis (ong. 45 euro) waarin begrepen: boekengeld, examengeld en opleiding gedurende een jaar. Om er zeker van te zijn dat het sponsorgeld als schoolgeld wordt gebruikt, regelt TAPs de betaling rechtstreeks met de schooldirectie. TAPs zal het schoolgeld van Ousman blijven betalen tot hij afgestudeerd is. Ousman loopt momenteel school in de Salvation Nursery School in Latrikunda Sabiji (Kanifing district) Zijn moeder heet Anta Ba (tel. op verzoek)

To sponsor a child in the Gambia, it does not take a lot of effort nor money, according to western standards. In the Gambia however, most people can not afford school fees. There are a few Nursery Schools where education is free, but once the children reach the age to go to Primary Schools, that is where the troubles start and education often ends. To give you an estimation of the costs per year: depending on the region, the fees for a school year in a Nursery School are appr. 50 euro. This covers all the expenses. In Basic Schools, a student has to pay 80 euro up to 100 euro per year, depending on the grade. This amount covers all expenses. (see example below) One has to understand that there is not much use in sponsoring a child only for one year: when sponsorship stops at a certain moment, further education will stop as well and we will end up with a very disapointed child. Right now, there are 3 children on TAPs list, desperately seeking sponsors. If you want to help to make the world a better place for these children, please get in touch.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Een kind sponsoren in Gambia vergt naar westerse maatstaven niet veel moeite, noch veel geld. In Gambia daarentegen, kunnen de meeste mensen het schoolgeld voor hun kinderen niet betalen. Er zijn weliswaar enkele kleuterscholen die gratis onderwijs aanbieden, maar deze zijn dun gezaaid. Echter, eens de kinderen naar de lagere school willen gaan, beginnen meestal de problemen en eindigt de opleiding. Om u een idee te geven van de kosten voor een schooljaar: afhankelijk van de regio, komen deze neer op zowat 50 euro waarmee dan ook alle kosten gedekt zijn. In de lagere scholen betaalt men tussen de 80 en 100 euro per schooljaar, afhankelijk van het leerjaar. In het onderstaande voorbeeld kan u zien wat daar inbegrepen zit. (van boeken over schoenen, uniform en maaltijden tot extra murosactiviteiten) Men dient te begrijpen dat het niet veel zin heeft om een kind slechts voor een jaar te sponsoren. Wanneer deze wordt stop gezet, eindigt meestal ook het school lopen. Wat dan overblijft, is een ontgoocheld en gefrustreerd kind. Momenteel heeft TAPs 3 kinderen op de lijst staan, op zoek naar een sponsor. Since the school has been provided with 2 extra class rooms, TAPs bought an extra 24 desks. After a layer of paint and varnish, they have been transported to Sintchu Alhagie.

Results of visit in December 2011: 2 rooms are ready. They have concrete flooring, corrugate roofing and solid brick stone walls. The finishing is to be expected before the next rainy season. The 2 rooms are occupied by 1 family. During the dry season the children share 1 room. During the rainy season, the parents and the children share 1 (bed)room because the other room will be used as kitchen. In order to provide more privacy in the future, a 3rd room will be built.

It is a self supportive school with two qualified teachers with excellent references (Ousman Bojang and Fatou Sambou) They show extreme dedication to and love for their job. It is the only Nursery School in the neighborhood and there are 50 children on the waiting list. Ousman built it himself with the means available. TAPs wants to build a proper school before the rainy season starts.

Het is een zelfbedruipend schooltje met twee gediplomeerde leraren met uitstekende referenties (Ousman Bojang en Fatou Sambou). Ze zijn zeer toegewijd en hebben veel liefde voor hun job. Het is de enige Nursery School in de buurt en er is een wachtlijst van 50 kinderen. Ousman heeft het schooltje zelf gebouwd met de schaarse middelen die hij zich kon veroorloven. TAPs wil een degelijk gebouw zetten voor het regenseizoen begint.

On April the 25th, Marion Jones visited the Bakau Lower Basic School in Bakau where she was introduced to Mariama Jallow (age 7). Mariama lives with her grandmother because her mom can not take care of her. Thanks to Marion, Mariama will have the opportunity to go to school until graduation.

Op 25 April bezocht Marion Jones de Basisschool in Bakau alwaar ze Mariama Jallow ontmoette (7 jaar). Mariama woont bij haar grootmoeder omdat haar mama niet voor haar kan zorgen. Dank zij Marion kan Mariama met een gerust hart haar schoolcarriere afmaken.

MATER DEI Instituut (Bredabaan - Brasschaat) sponsort voor het tweede jaar op rij en kwam met een gigantisch bedrag aandraven. De leerlingen en het personeel zochten sponsors, wandelden, liepen, fietsten dat het een lieve lust was, en geven hiermee het startschot voor het bouwen van een 2de school. De werkzaamheden zijn reeds in voorbereiding: stenen worden in de zon gedroogd en materiaal wordt besteld. De werkzaamheden zullen te volgen zijn op de MAFUGI rubrieken.
TAPs dankt alle leerlingen en personeel voor hun gulle bijdrage van 3675,85 euro !!! (Vorig jaar mocht TAPs 2000 euro in ontvangst nemen die integraal naar de bouw van de Fabaloum Nursery School is gegaan)
MATER DEI Institute (Bredabaan - Brasschaat - Belgium) sponsors for the second year in a row and came up with a huge contribution. The students and the staff looked for sponsors, walked, ran, cycled their hearts out. That means we can start the building of the 2nd school. The works are already in full preparation: bricks are drying in the sun and materials have been ordered.
The progress will be published in the MAFUGI headings.
