Invloed van genen
(b.v. verstandelijke aanleg) niet negeren a.u.b.!
Early Math and
Reading Ability Linked to Job and Income in Adulthood
The Childhood Age
That Predicts Future Success - LiveScience - May 9, 2013
Study: Math Skills at
Age 7 Predict How Much Money Youll Make - The Atlantic - May 10, 2013
Math and reading ability at age 7 may be linked with
socioeconomic status several decades later, according to new research published
in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological
Science. The childhood abilities predict socioeconomic status in adulthood over
and above associations with intelligence, education, and socioeconomic status
in childhood.
In light of ongoing debates about the impact that education
standards have on childrens lives, psychological scientists Stuart Ritchie and
Timothy Bates of the University of Edinburgh wanted to investigate whether
early math and reading skills might have effects that go beyond the classroom.
We wanted to test whether being better at math or reading
in childhood would be linked with a rise through the social ranks: a better
job, better housing, and higher income as an adult, Ritchie and Bates explain.
The researchers explored these relationships using data from
the National Child Development Study, a large, nationally representative study
that followed over 17,000 people in England, Scotland, and Wales over a span of
about 50 years, from when they were born in 1958 to present day.
The data revealed that childhood reading and math skills
really do matter.Ritchie and Bates found that participants reading and math
ability at age 7 were linked to their social class a full 35 years later.
Participants who had higher reading and math skills as children ended up having
higher incomes, better housing, and better jobs in adulthood. The data suggest,
for example, that going up one reading level at age 7 was associated with a
£5,000, or roughly $7,750, increase in income at age 42. The long-term
associations held even after the researchers took other common factors into
account.
These findings imply that basic childhood skills,
independent of how smart you are, how long you stay in school, or the social
class you started off in, will be important throughout your life, say Ritchie
and Bates.
So what might explain these long-term associations? The
researchers believe that genes may play a role:Genes underlie many of the
differences among children on all the variables weve looked at here, they
note. The genetically-controlled study using twins that were conducting now
should allow us to separate out genetic and environmental effects. The
researchers hope that the twin study will illuminate the extent to which
environmental interventions might strengthen the links theyve identified in
their current research.
This research was supported by an Economic and Social
Research Council scholarship awarded to Stuart Ritchie.

Furedi criticises methodologically naive education research
Instead of being problem-driven and open-minded in seeking solutions, education research tended to be very much policy-driven, and often commissioned by Department of Education, which implicitly knows where the problem lies in advance.
A leading sociologist has attacked the application of so-called evidence-based policy and much of the research lying behind it to education. By Matthew Reisz. Writing in the online magazine spiked on the scourge of scientism, Frank Furedi, professor of sociology at the University of Kent, argues that the use of scientific evidence for political ends is particularly troublesome in the sphere of social policy An area where this is most apparent is education.
Particularly to be deplored, in Professor Furedis view, was the use of the term intervention, taken over from medicine, in an educational context, which he believed reveals how much todays cultural elite believes in the existence of educational pathology that is, great numbers of children suffering from some form of quasi-medical educational deficit.
Where educators ought to be asking What do children need to know? Professor Furedi claims that the current obsession with what works distracts us from thinking about the intellectual and knowledge content of the curriculum. Asked where he sees the weaknesses of the academic research which feeds into such policies, Professor Furedi told Times Higher Education that it was often very thin and methodologically naive it doesnt pay enough attention to context. He saw lots of research based on small samples of very few students and one-off projects which dont link up with other projects but had little sense that the discipline was generating an expanding corpus of knowledge. Instead of being problem-driven and open-minded in seeking solutions, education research tended to be very much policy-driven, and often commissioned by Department of Education, which implicitly knows where the problem lies in advance.
Both in schools and in universities, according to Professor Furedi, there was room for different teaching styles and no need for a single model to underpin the training and assessment of teachers and academics. I have a very distinctive teaching style, which I think is effective, he said, but I wouldnt recommend it for everybody, since it depends on personality. Theres more than one effective teaching style. Its not a science. First published by Times Higher Education, 15 September 2013
Niets is minder waar.
Niets is minder waar.
The weakenedacademic skill of students in six years (Bron: Education Evaluation Center, University of Helsinki, prof.Jukka Himane).
Op het internet lazen we over de studie van 2011 de bijdrage: Finns ain't what they used to be for teen pupils- News |Published in TES Newspaper, 27 May, 2011. De bijdrage startte zo: Finland - Shock news for nation's admired education system, as research shows huge decline in learning ability of 15-year-olds. Volgens prof.
If student dependent background variables have such a huge impact in an otherwise comparatively homogeneous country like Finland, they can even more severely distort international comparisons. One of the most importantbackground variables is the language spoken at home. A non-test language spoken at home is typically linked to immigration. Excluding first and second generation immigrant students from the national averages considerably alters the country league tables: On top of the list in the 2003 major domain, mathematics, Finland is replaced by Belgium and the Netherlands and it is closely followed by Switzerland (Finland and PISA Explanations and reasons, 2011 zie Internet).
It is also true that less than five percent of Finnish students have a socio-economic background below that of the least advantaged 15 percent of students in the OECD countries.
We citeren: The Finnish studies on learning to learn competencies (Hautamäki et al., 2004) show that there are considerable between-class differences in attainment and attitudes within schools, especially in bigger schools in which classes are often formed on the basis of foreign language or other subject choices of students. Additionally, there are differences in grade repeating policies as a part of managing the variation between students. In Finland each year 2% of pupils are repeating a grade.
Also in Finland, the between-school variation is substantially higher after the division, at the age of 17 plus (Hautamäki & a. 2002).
Ook in een Zweeds rapport lazen we de kritiek dat an increasing number of students do not possess basic reading skills, the Swedish school system had also lost its good spot in equality (gelijkheid) One in five students now does not have a basic level in reading, a level needed to benefit from other knowledge," said Anita Wester, project manager at the agency for Sweden's participation in PISA.
Prof. A. Holm (Noorwegen) poneerde een analoge conclusie voor Noorwegen: What kind of equality and justice is achieved in a modern school based on the principles of the Norwegian Unified School. What about the quality of learning? Is it possible to implement adapted teaching in practice? Recent research seems to indicate that these policies may have yielded a depository school with declining quality in terms of academic level and social environment (Anne Welle Strand & Arild Tjeldvoll, The Norwegian unified school: a paradise lost? J. Education Policy, 2002, Vol. 17, No. 6, 673-686). Volgens prof. A. Holm kan men geen hoge kwaliteit bereiken binnen een ongedifferentieerde en nivellerende middenschool: Holmclaims that there is a conflict of goals in Norwegian basic school policies. He believes that the demand forjustice, by claiming to offer quality teaching to all children independent of their natural conditions, collides with the organizational principle of integrating all groups of students within the same class and school organization (Holm, A. (2002) Distributional justice in the Norwegian basic school: a study of distributional preferences, European Education, (34) 3, 55-73.)
Fin(ish) of Finnish
lessons!Universiteit Helsinki en
Finland-propagandist slaan alarm.
doodzwijgen.
Een panikerende Sahlberg twitterde vandaag: @pasi_sahlberg: Working
on a column on "What if Finland loses its top-notch in education?".
Ideas, please!
It is time to concede that the signals of change have been discernible already for a while and to open up a national discussion regarding the state and future of the Finnish comprehensive school that rose to international acclaim due to our students success in the PISA studies.
Pasi Sahlberg
resultaten. Formal education seems to be losing its former power and the
accepting of the societal expectations seems to be related more strongly than
before to students home background.
Signs of declining
results
Since 1996, educational effectiveness has been understood
in Finland to include not only subject specific knowledge and skills but also
the more general competences which are not the exclusive domain of any single
subject but develop through good teaching along a students educational career.
Many of these, including the object of the present assessment, learning to
learn, have been named in the education policy documents of the European Union
as key competences which each member state should provide their citizens as
part of general education (EU 2006).
In spring 2012, the Helsinki University Centre for
Educational Assessment implemented a nationally representative assessment of
ninth grade students learning to learn competence. The assessment was inspired
by signs of declining results in the past few years assessments. This decline
had been observed both in the subject specific assessments of the Finnish
National Board of Education, in the OECD PISA 2009 study, and in the learning to
learn assessment implemented by the Centre for Educational Assessment in all
comprehensive schools in Vantaa in 2010.
The results of the Vantaa study could be compared against
the results of a similar assessment implemented in 2004. As the decline in students
cognitive competence and in their learning related attitudes was especially
strong in the two Vantaa studies, with only 6 years apart, a decision was made
to direct the national assessment of spring 2012 to the same schools which had
participated in a respective study in 2001.
Girls performed better
The goal of the assessment was to find out whether the
decline in results, observed in the Helsinki region, were the same for the
whole country. The assessment also offered a possibility to look at the readiness
of schools to implement a computer-based assessment, and how this has changed
during the 11 years between the two assessments. After all, the 2001 assessment
was the first in Finland where large scale student assessment data was
collected in schools using the Internet.
The main focus of the assessment was on students competence
and their learning-related attitudes at the end of the comprehensive school
education, but the assessment also relates to educational equity: to regional,
between-school, and between- class differences and to the relation of students
gender and home background to their competence and attitudes.
The assessment reached about 7800 ninth grade students in 82
schools in 65 municipalities. Of the students, 49% were girls and 51% boys. The
share of students in Swedish speaking schools was 3.4%. As in 2001, the
assessment was implemented in about half of the schools using a printed test
booklet and in the other half via the Internet. The results of the 2001 and
2012 assessments were uniformed through IRT modelling to secure the
comparability of the results. Hence, the results can be interpreted to represent
the full Finnish ninth grade population.
Girls performed better than boys in all three fields of
competence measured in the assessment: reasoning, mathematical thinking, and
reading comprehension. The difference was especially noticeable in reading comprehension
even if in this task girls attainment had declined more than boys attainment.
Differences between the AVI-districts were small.
Decline of attainment
The impact of students home-background was, instead,
obvious: the higher the education of the parents, the better the student
performed in the assessment tasks. There was no difference in the impact of
mothers education on boys and girls attainment. The
between-school-differences were very small (explaining under 2% of the
variance) while the between-class differences were relatively large (9 % 20
%).
The change between the year 2001 and year 2012 is
significant. The level of students attainment has declined considerably. The
difference can be compared to a decline of Finnish students attainment in PISA
reading literacy from the 539 points of PISA 2009 to 490 points, to below the
OECD average. The mean level of students learning-supporting attitudes still
falls above the mean of the scale used in the questions but also that mean has
declined from 2001. The mean level of attitudes detrimental to learning has
risen but the rise is more modest.
Girls attainment has declined more than boys in three of
the five tasks. There was no gender difference in the change of students
attitudes, however. Between-school differences were un-changed but differences
between classes and between individual students had grown. The change in
attitudesunlike the change in attainmentwas related to students home
background: The decline in learning-supporting attitudes and the growth in
attitudes detrimental to school work were weaker the better educated the
mother. Home background was not related to the change in students attainment,
however. A decline could be discerned both among the best and the weakest students.
Deeper cultural change
The results of the assessment point to a deeper, on-going
cultural change which seems to affect the young generation especially hard.
Formal education seems to be losing its former power and the accepting of the
societal expectations which the school represents seems to be related more
strongly than before to students home background.
The school has to compete with students self-elected
pastime activities, the social media, and the boundless world of information
and entertainment open to all through the Internet. The school is to a growing
number of young people just one, often critically reviewed, developmental
environment among many. The change is not a surprise, however. A similar
decline in student attainment has been registered in the other Nordic countries
already earlier.
It is time to concede that the signals of change have been
discernible already for a while and to open up a national discussion regarding
the state and future of the Finnish comprehensive school that rose to
international acclaim due to our students success in the PISA studies.

Blog Finnish education reform: Two Finnish Icons: Education and Nokia
...Some observers argued that 10 years ago Nokia had reached a state of complacency with its domination of the worlds mobile phone market. There were those who believed that Nokia had lost much of its creative capacity to come up with new ideas when set goals had been realized.
This is a also potential risk for the Finnish education system as it moves on as a celebrated model of public education in the world. The fourth PISA study in 2009 conveyed the first signs of possible turn of the course of the Finnish comprehensive school, although the overall performance is still excellent.
Certain complacency and inability to build joint and inspiring vision of the future in Finnish education will serve as factors that inevitably lead the system into trouble.
