    Ridley Scott geeft eerste details Alien prequel

    Vorig jaar werd bekendgemaakt dat 20th Century Fox Ridley Scott had ingehuurd om een prequel te maken van zijn eigen sciencefiction klassieker Alien. MTV sprak met Scott over zijn nieuwe film Robin Hood en kon hem ook de eerste details over de prequel ontfutselen.

    Volgens Scott staat het verhaal al vast. De scenaristen zijn bezig met de vierde versie van het script en er wordt al voorzichtig gewerkt aan de eerste grafische ontwerpen voor de film. Scott moet binnen enkele weken een budgetvoorstel doen aan de studio, en hoewel dit waarschijnlijk behoorlijk hoog zal uitvallen is hij ervan overtuigd dat de film werkelijkheid zal gaan worden.
    It’s set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?’ The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer’s chair. … [The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.

    Tijdens een interview in 2002 zei Scott al dat hij nog eens wilde terugkeren naar de plek waar de aliens voor het eerst gevonden werden. Hij wilde laten zien hoe de wezens tot stand zijn gekomen. Het leek er echter nooit op dat Scott zich ooit aan een sequel zou wagen: "I always avoided sequels, but here there was something fresh."

    Het scenario komt van Jon Spaihts (schrijver van sciencefiction films Shadow 19 en Passengers). Star Wars en Alien art-director Roger Christian bevestigde onlangs al dat de prequel in 3D geschoten zal gaan worden.

    Volgens Scott is het zeer onwaarschijnlijk dat Sigourney Weaver een rol zal krijgen in de film. Wel verklapt hij dat de hoofdpersoon wederom een vrouw zal zijn. We kunnen de film eind 2011 of begin 2012 in de bioscoop verwachten.

    De Alien reeks heeft al drie sequels, Aliens (James Cameron), Alien³ (David Fincher) en Alien: Resurrection (Jean-Pierre Jeunet). Ook werden er nog twee mash-ups met de Predator reeks gemaakt, Alien vs Predator en Aliens vs Predator Requiem. Over die laatste twee is Scott niet bepaalt razendenthousiast: “I know it’s commerce, but what a pity."
