Het gebouw
Het Bonnefantenmuseum is een E-vormig gebouw van vier bouwlagen en een losstaande, gezichtsbepalende toren aan de Maas.
De hoofdentree is aan de Avenue Céramique; langs de rivier is de tweede ingang bij het Café Ipanema. Op de begane grond zijn de meeste publieksruimten: entreehal, museumwinkel, auditorium, café en torenzaal.
De museumzalen zijn hoger gelegen: oude kunst op de eerste, en hedendaagse kunst op de tweede verdieping. Bovenin de middenvleugel is een 'prentenkabinet'.
In totaal is er ruim 4.000 m² expositieoppervlakte.
Het gebouw is opgetrokken in traditionele materialen als baksteen, natuursteen en zink om een skelet van beton en staal. Binnen is veelvuldig gebruik gemaakt van keruinghout voor de vloeren. De meest natuurlijke factor is echter het daglicht: de centrale trap is eigenlijk een overdekte straat, waar men zich half buiten voelt. Op de tweede verdieping speelt het daglicht met de kunstwerken. Bij de rondgang komt de bezoeker afwisselend door gangen langs de zuidkant en de noordkant van het centrale trappenhuis. Het lichteffect wordt verstrekt door het contrast tussen open en gesloten, dat het gebouw beheerst. De voor- en zijgevels zijn gesloten; de gevels van de centrale vleugel, die de as van het gebouw vormt, zijn open. Dit samenspel van licht en routing wordt geaccentueerd door horizontale en verticale doorkijkjes, die van het bezoek een 'promenade architecturale' maken.
Wisselende expo's en vaste collecties. Vaste collecties: oude kunst, middeleeuwse sculpturen, Italiaanse schilderkunst 1325-1525 en schilderkunst uit de zuidelijke Nederlanden uit de 16e en 17e eeuw en voorwerpen uit de collectie Neutelings (12e-16e eeuw); hedendaagse kunst en kleinere collecties, zoals Maastrichts aardewerk en zilver
Geopend dinsdag tot en met zondag 11.00 - 17.00 uur. Tevens op feestdagen die op een maandag vallen.
Gesloten 1 januari, Carnaval (25 t/m 28 februari) en 25 december. Tijdens het ombouwen van tentoonstellingen kunnen gedeelten van het museum tijdelijk gesloten zijn. Wij streven ernaar om niet meer dan één vleugel tegelijk te sluiten, m.u.v. grote tentoonstellingen.
De kantoren zijn op maandagen gesloten!

Bonnefantenmuseum 125 years! jubilary programme 2009
The Bonnefantenmuseum celebrates its 125 annivesary this year with seven exhibitions.
* Exile on Main St (17 February 16 August 2009) The big anniversary exhibition Exile on Main St. shows work by nine artists who took a stand against mainstream art from the 1960's onwards in the American art. To be seen: work by Richard Artschwager, Wiliam Copley, Steve Gianakos, Alfred Jensen, Peter Saul, John Tweddle, John Wesley, H.C. Westermann and Joe Zucker.
* Palazzo - collecting early Italian art in the Netherlands, 1900-1940 ( 7 March 2008 31 December 2011). As part of Rijksmuseum Maastricht alliance between the Bonnefantenmuseum and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam the Bonnefantenmuseum presents early Italian art collected by the important Dutch collector of Italian Renaissance art, Prof. Dr. Otto Lanz (1865-1935). The highlights include works by Veronese, Sano di Pietro, Luca della Robbia, Donatello as well as Lanz' favourite artist, Tintoretto.
* Jacob Jordaens (13 March 14 June 2009) Jacob Jordaens is one of the most important painters from both the Northern and Southern Netherlands. One of his undisputed masterpieces is "St. Peter finding the tribute money" from ca. 1623. Two versions of this painting occupy a central place in the exhibition, which has been mounted in collaboration with the Statens Museum for Kunst. * Hunted by the virgin - the Diana tapestries of the Rijksmuseum (13 March 13 September 2009). In 2006, the Rijksmuseum acquired three tapestries with themes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The tapestries were designed by Karel van Mander.
The whole series was woven in the atelier of Frans Spiering, who was also originally from the Southern Netherlands and whose workshop was in Delft. The tapestries are being shown to the public for the first time as a series in Rijksmuseum Maastricht.
* Prospect Park V (September October 2009) For the fifth edition of Prospect Park, the biannual presentation of recent and planned acquisitions by young artists from the Netherlands and the Euregion, the museum is sparing no expense. Prospect Park V is introducing the work of eight promising artists who are all going their own way in an artistic climate that swings between social relevance and commercial success.
* Elizabeth Peyton (20 October 2009 - 21 March 2010) Elizabeth Peyton's miniature portraits capture the spirit of the times in an artistic language that unmistakeably reflects late 20th-century urban sensitivity. The museum presents the first comprehensive retrospective of Peyton's oeuvre, mounted by the New Museum in New York, beginning with a small-scale portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte and going up to one of fashion designer Marc Jacobs.
* Bonnefanten at Schiphol - Brueghel in business (November 2009 January 2010) The oeuvre of Pieter Brueghel the Younger is a model example of large-scale atelier production, in which many of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's compositions were copied. Over the Christmas period, some versions of two appropriate compositions the Census at Bethlehem and the small Adoration in the snow will be shown by the Bonnefantenmuseum in Rijksmuseum op Schiphol.
