Jezus zegt : Ik ben de WEG, de
WAARHEID en het LEVEN.
Wat is nu de WEG ? Jezus.
materie. De tijd is verleden, heden en toekomst. Ieder deel is verschillend,
diepte.
nl. ruimte. Materie is vast, vloeibaar en gasvormig. Ieder deel is
3
Jezus is de tweede persoon in de Drieëenheid. Jezus is zowel God als mens. Hij
is volledig God en volledig mens.
Kolossenzen 2 : 8-9
Christus.
bestaat in hem.
4
Onze redding :
Wij
Romeinen 6 : 23
In
geloof.
Jakobus 2 : 19
[19] U gelooft dat God de
enige is?
Onze lichamen degenereren totdat we
sterven.
degeneratie gaat verder. We hebben echt leven nodig! Leven in Gods nabijheid
waar je geen verwoestbare lichamen krijgt.
Genesis 3 : 19
was gesprongen.
was.
Een paar weken geleden was me opgevallen
What Is Homosexuality?
by
Frank Worthen
In helping people
overcome homosexuality, we've found that many are in confusion about what
homosexuality actually is. There is no agreement among either the scientific
community, religious groups or homosexual people themselves as to the
definition of homosexuality. Lawrence J. Hatter, author of Changing
Homosexualitv in the Male, has given this definition: "One who is
motivated, in adult life, by a definite preferential erotic attraction to
members of the same sex and who usually, but not necessarily, engages in overt
sexual relations with them." We've found this to be a good working
definition, though a full explanation of the condition of homosexuality goes
much deeper.
Born
Gay?
The majority of
homosexuals believe they were born "gay." This belief often supplies
them with comfort, relieving them of any responsibility to change. However,
there is no solid scientific evidence that people are born homosexual. The
overwhelming majority of gay people are completely normal genetically. They are
fully male or female.
Learned
Behavior
We believe homosexuality
is learned behavior which is influenced by a number of factors: a disrupted
family life in early years, a lack of unconditional love on the part of either
parent, and a failure to identify with the same-sex parent. Later, these
problems can result in a search for love and acceptance, envy of the same sex,
and a life controlled by various fears and feelings of isolation. One thing
that does seem clear: homosexuality is brought about by a multitude of root
causes. It is simplistic thinking to lay the blame on any single area. Fears of
the opposite sex, incest, or molestation, dominant mothers and weak fathers,
demonic oppression: all of these may play a part in causing homosexuality, but
no individual factor alone can cause it. Along with outside factors in a
person's life, his own personal choices have played a key role in forming and
shaping his homosexual identity, though few will recognize or admit this.
What
Does the Bible Say?
The Bible states clearly
in five places that homosexual behavior is sin: Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans
1:26,27; 1 Corinthians 6:9,10; Timothy 1:9,10. Sexual lust and fantasy, both
homosexual and heterosexual, are sinful according to God's Word. On the other
hand, 1 Corinthians 10:13 assures us that temptation is not sin: "No
temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He
will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,
He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." There
is a difference between experiencing a pull towards homosexual acts or fantasy
and choosing to give in to that pull. This is the difference between temptation
and sin. We can't fully control that which tempts us, but the choice of whether
or not to pursue that which tempts is within our power. This power of choice is
strengthened by the Holy Spirit.
The
Four Components of Homosexuality
The problem of
homosexuality involves much more than simply a sexual act. Those caught up in
this sin usually have entered the homosexual lifestyle to some degree. To
better understand the circumstances of the homosexual person seeking help,
we've divided homosexuality into four components: behavior, psychic response,
identity and lifestyle.
Behavior: Often, it is assumed that all
homosexual people engage in homosexual acts, but this is not always the case.
Because of fears or strong religious convictions, some may refrain from sexual
behavior, yet experience an intense battle with homosexual attractions. Another
wrong assumption is that all people who engage in homosexual acts are
homosexual. There are significant numbers of heterosexual men who engage in
homosexual acts for a variety of reasons, such as being in prison or anywhere
where heterosexual sex is unavailable.
Also, we do not believe
that a child who is involved in homosexual acts early in life will necessarily
become homosexual unless these acts fulfill needs that are not being met in
other ways, such as needs for love, acceptance, security and significance. In
these cases, the child's involvement in the act is viewed as a
"trade-off" for the non-sexual needs he is obtaining. It is possible
that the act and the fulfilled needs may become synonymous, which could lead to
the development of a homosexual orientation. However, statistics have shown
that most children who experience homosexual acts leave them behind, growing up
to lead a normal heterosexual life.
Psychic Response: A brief definition of this term
is, "sexual excitation (stimulation) caused by visual perception or
fantasy speculation." Psychic response is also what people refer to as a
"homosexual orientation." Though many people claim that they have
experienced visual or sexual attraction for the same sex "as long as they
can remember," there is a progression in a person's life that leads to a
homosexual psychic response. A child may start out with a need to compare
himself with others to see if he measures up to societal standards. When he
feels he doesn't compare favorably with others, he develops admiration for
those traits and physical characteristics he feels he does not possess.
Admiration, which is normal, may turn to envy. Envy leads to the desire to
possess others and finally, to consume others. This strong desire eventually
becomes eroticized, normally around puberty, leading to homosexual psychic
response. As psychic response begins to grip someone's life, a certain amount
of scheming takes place. Sexual situations are pictured in the mind. When the
first sexual encounter takes place, it may be the result of several years of
planning and fantasy. However, homosexual behavior can also precede psychic
response, which may then develop as a conditioned response to
sexually-gratifying encounters with those of the same sex.
Identity: Some people enter into
homosexuality through "identity". These are people who may not have
experienced sexual attraction for the same sex or have had any homosexual
encounters. However, from an early age, they have felt they were
"different" from other people. They felt abnormal, like they do not
fit into the heterosexual world. They reason, "If I'm not heterosexual,
then I must be gay" and they accept the homosexual label into their lives.
Of course, this is a misinterpretation. A person troubled with shyness, fear of
the opposite sex, lack of athletic or social skills need not accept the label
"homosexual." However, people do grow into labels. Once a label is
accepted, the implied characteristics of that label begin to develop in a
person's life. What we believe about ourselves is of extreme importance.
Lifestyle: A homosexual may insist that he
bears no responsibility for his identity, his psychic response or even his
first sexual encounter, which may have been forced upon him. However, every
homosexual person must bear the responsibility for his or her choice to enter
the homosexual lifestyle. People enter this lifestyle to varying degrees. Some
live in the heterosexual world for the most part, seeking out only sporadic,
impersonal sexual encounters. Others immerse themselves in the total "gay
subculture," a setting in which a person works, lives and socializes in a
totally gay environment. There are all the varying degrees in between these two
extremes but the gay lifestyle, for many people, is the first place where they
have experienced any form of acceptance on a deeper level. In spite of the
acceptance that is available, however, the homosexual lifestyle often proves to
be a painful and unrewarding way of life, particularly for older gays who are
no longer desirable sexually.
As you can see from
looking at these four components, homosexuality is a complex problem with many
definitions and variations. If someone tells you "I am a homosexual,"
he has really told you very little about himself. It takes a deeper look to
determine the degree to which homosexuality has become a part of his life.
It is true that the way
out of homosexuality is not easy, yet there are thousands who have left
homosexuality behind and have become "new creations in Christ." Many
have married and raised families, while others remain celibate, yet lead joyful
lives devoted to God's service. God gives us the desires of our heart. Satan is
not pleased when someone sees through the deception of homosexuality and
discovers the way out. There are many battles to be fought, but "greater
is He who is in us than he who is in the world."
"Do not be afraid
or discouraged...for the battle is not yours, but God's." II Chronicles 20:15.
How to Deal with Same-Sex Attractions
by
Frank Worthen
One of the most difficult
battles faced by those overcoming homosexuality is working through attractions
they still have to people of the same sex. Often, the enemy capitalizes on the
situation to induce guilt, condemnation, and feelings of hopelessness and
failure.
These attractions can be
divided into two types. The "split-second attractions" are those felt
towards people we do not know, those chance encounters while walking down the
street, doing shopping, or even during church. The second kind of attraction is
directed towards someone we know, someone we work with or are required to
interact with on a regular basis.
Lasting
Freedom
I was talking with a
counselee one evening who said, "I can hardly live with the guilt I feel.
Even today, I failed repeatedly. I cruised everything that came my way. I feel
like a prostitute." Like most people, he had a measure of victory during
the winter months, but when the sun came out and the clothes came off, he had a
full-blown problem. It does little good to simply say, "Stop it!"
There may be an hour of victory before slipping back into old patterns again.
Only when we come to understand ourselves and see what is behind the
attractions can we find a measure of lasting freedom.
While some attractions
are definitely sexual, many are not. We must sort through our feelings and
discover the variety of needs that cause us to become attracted to others. This
problem needs to be taken out of the realm of homosexuality, because it is a
problem all Christians face. The "normal" man or woman takes notice
of the way people are dressed, how they carry themselves, and their degree of
sophistication. Their attractions are a mixture of both sexual and non-sexual interests.
In interviewing straight
males, I have found that they most often choose their friends to complement
themselves in some way. A guy will latch onto a good-looking buddy so he can
share in the attention received from women. Another will make friends with someone
on a sports team, so he can share in the glory of winning and being an
important figure.
What's
Behind Attractions?
Two things generally
stand behind attractions: one, that skin is attracted to skin, and the other is
some form of inadequacy. In regards to the first, perhaps men have a greater
problem, as we are told that men respond more to the visual. However, lust is
common to allheterosexual as well as homosexual. Scripture clearly spells out
the temptation we will face with lust, so "think it not strange" (1
Peter 4:12). All people must battle against the sensual. A little prevention
goes a long way in avoiding the snares of Satan. God freely gives us the wisdom
to help us avoid walking into the enemy's traps. We must learn to stay clear of
places and situations that we cannot handle. Those who are wise hand over no
tools to the enemy to use against themselves.
Inadequacies
It is the second reason
for attractions that we need to focus on: inadequacies that probably date back
to early childhood. Our feelings of inadequacy caused us to admire those who
were adequate, who seemed better than us in some way. It all began simply
enough by us admiring those we wished to be like. Some of our inadequacies were
not in the physical realm--the fearful admiring the courageous; the slow, the
fast; the loner, the socially popular.
But the physical always
seems to play a major role. The thin or overweight admire the muscular. Those
without strong muscles try to build up their bodies. In doing so, they become
increasingly aware of those who are superior in this area. Even pictures of
strong muscles in a magazine will begin to attract their attention. As envy of
others and an obsession with this one area develops, it is possible that this
focus will become sexualized during the years of puberty. This is the way a
"partialism" begins, which is an obsession with a particular part of
the body, with sexual implications.
Envy
Many of our attractions
are simply based on envy and must be brought before the Lord and confessed. God
has made us as we are, and we must not tell God that He has made a mistake in
forming us. Certainly, if we have neglected the body God has given us, we are
obligated to restore it, such as losing extra weight, or overcoming substance
abuse. Coming to grips with our attractions based on envy will do much to bring
victory.
Other
Attractions
What about our
attractions to those around us, particularly the Christians we fellowship with?
How are we to respond? Do we stand or do we flee? We are clearly told to flee
youthful lusts (2 Timothy 2:22), but does this apply? Many feel an additional
weight of guilt when the person to whom they are attracted is a Christian. They
feel that in some way, they have dishonored one of God's saints. They feel
dirty and imagine that God is angry with them for their lust.
Again, let's separate the
sexual from the non-sexual. Satan loves to badger the overcomer with the
message, "You've just blown it; you haven't changed. You're still gay. God
is not working in your life."
Often, we have not had a
sexual element to our attraction, but because of Satanic suggestion, a sexual
interest develops. Always go to the Lord for the truth. God, what do I
really feel? Is it sexual? Is it just envy and a desire to possess what another
has? Let us not condemn ourselves without a trial. God just might give us
an acquittal!
Sexual
Temptations
What if we feel a sexual
desire, a strong urge for sexual interaction? Again, confess and receive the
forgiveness that God freely extends to you. It is very helpful also to confess
to another person and become accountable to him or her. We all need supportive
prayer partners. The tendency may be to flee, to suddenly cut off all contacts
with the individual to whom we are attracted. Is this the right thing to do?
You may encounter
different answers, but I will share my views. If we are attracted to a
Christian, I do not believe that we can simply shut this person out of our
lives. I think we owe it to them and to the Body of Christ to work through this
relationship.
If there has been no
seduction on the part of the other person and all the sexual temptation is in
your own mind, then it is not right to walk away and reject another person for
seemingly no reason.
It is also not helpful to
tell this person what you are feeling, as they would be at a loss to help you
in this area. I think we should only flee when there is a sexual intent on the
part of the other person.
Avoiding
Escape
I used the term
"working it through," and you may wonder just what I mean. This
common expression sometimes refers to a grief situation where there has been a
loss: a loss of a person, a job, or some form of security. "Working it
through" implies avoiding escape and coming to grips with the situation in
a realistic manner.
If we don't face our
attractions head-on, we will have to deal with them again and again. One thing
in our favor is that our attractions seldom are long-term, but fade away and
often are replaced by new attractions.
While we should not have
to bring every friendship under the microscope, we may have to do a bit of
soul-searching. Consuming attractions can be a form of idolatry, worshiping the
creature more than our Creator. If we know this to be true, if someone is more
important to us than God, then we must confess our idolatry and ask God to
clean up this situation.
Breaking
Infatuation
Are you right now caught
up in a consuming infatuation and don't know what to do? As a temporary
measure, if possible, cut down the number of times you are seeing the person.
Using the telephone rather than visiting the person helps to break the physical
attraction.
Even though you may not
want to, you must encourage other relationships, both for yourself and for your
friend. In seeking new friendships, we must give up and throw away all
measurements from the old lifestyle. We will find that the physically
unattractive can become attractive to us in other, non-sexual, ways. We can
have beautiful fellowship with others who do not wear all their gifts on the
outside. We must beware of withdrawal and isolation. Opening up our lives to
others brings healthy rewards; narrowing down our friendships leads to
distorted relationships.
Our
Needs
It seems that most
people, whether homosexual or not, are on a constant search for approval. We
all have deep insecurities and need the input of others in our lives. Our
approval, however, must first come from God or we will never be satisfied and
will always be on an endless search.
Also, everyone needs
warmth and acceptance. God has created the Church, the Body of Christ, to
affirm us, to supply our needs in this way. When the deep needs are filled,
when we feel secure and have a sense of belonging, we do not want what others
have, and the attractions lose their power.
So don't just beat
yourself on the head every time you feel attracted to another. Set about to
fill the voids and deficits in your life in a healthy, wholesome way. Rebuke
the enemy and do not fall for his lies. Separate the truth from the lies and
confess to God what is true. Then walk in the forgiveness He intends for you to
have.
Ex-Gay: Fact, Fraud or Fantasy?
By
Frank Worthen
"Ex-gay" is a
term which always brings a response. For the most part, the gay community
believes this is a total lie. They deny that it is possible to become ex-gay.
It is their belief that "ex-gay" is a fraudulent term. Most come from
the standpoint that a homosexual orientation is inborn, that it cannot be
changed. They frequently equate the homosexual orientation with being
left-handed, or with the color of one's skin.
Others who are not so
hostile believe that ex-gays are simply engrossed in a fantasy situation. They
think that one day, the "former homosexual" will come back to reality
and realize that they are still just as gay as they ever were. Each time an
ex-gay falls back into sexual sin, the skeptical critics hold this up as proof
of their position that the ex-gay was living in a state of euphoria, that they
were simply brain-washed and have finally come to their senses.
UNDERSTANDING THE
TERM: What is the
meaning of this term that many people are using to announce that their life has
been changed? To begin to understand the meaning of "ex-gay", we can
correlate it with the sanctification process described in 2 Cor 1:10, "Who
delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he
will yet deliver us." The ex-gay knows that something has definitely
happened in his life. Change has come. Perhaps the most important change is
that he has come into agreement with God that homosexuality "misses the
mark", which is the definition of sin. Attitudes have also changed, so
that what was once called "love" is now seen as possessiveness. The
ex-gay can agree with Paul, that he has been delivered. So there is now a new
position in Christ, where the ex-gay is freed from sin by the atoning blood of
Jesus on the cross. God now views that person through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
At the same time, the change that we are experiencing is also a process of
growth that goes along day by day, even minute by minute.
WHAT ABOUT TEMPTATION? Becoming ex-gay does not
guarantee that there will be no stumbles. Daily, each Christian needs to be
delivered from tempting thoughts and sexual availability. He knows that Jesus
will deliver him from these things, because Christ has already begun the change
process in his life. When one has already seen the hand of God at work in ones
life, it is easier to trust God and to rely on Him in times of trouble.
THE FUTURE: "I will yet be
delivered." The ex-gay person sees his homosexual responses diminishing
and has the confident hope that he will be fully delivered in the future. But
nowhere does the Bible promise that a person will come to the place where they
are never again tempted. In fact, the Scriptures promise just the opposite: the
Christian faces a lifetime of trials and temptations. We must rejoice in our
trials, for they build Christian maturity. The former homosexual who enters
into temptations also rejoices, for he has seen God deliver him and he knows
that each time God provides the way out of temptation, he becomes stronger in
his faith.
OUR GOAL: At New Hope Ministries we do not
attempt to make heterosexuals out of homosexuals. Rather, we attempt to change
a person's identity, the way a person looks at himself. It is not biblical to
use our past sin as our God-given identity. We encourage the former gay to drop
the label "homosexual" from his life. However, we do not ask him to
become dishonest about his struggle with homosexuality. He is a Christian who
has a homosexual problem, rather than a homosexual who believes in Christ
Jesus. It is our hope that a person struggling with homosexuality will come to
a place of wholeness in Christ. Then, from a position of strength, he can
decide whether to marry or whether to remain single. We hope that each person
will keep an open mind on marriage until they come to that place of maturity
where they know that they could handle a marriage situation properly, if God
led them into it.
WHAT DO WE REALLY
WANT? An
important part of the change process is the "belief principle". Jesus
said in Mark 11:24, "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe
that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." We encourage people to
joyously welcome Christ into their heart, to have a positive spirit about
Christ and to expect changes to occur. We point out that Christ works daily,
even minute by minute. An awareness must be developed to see what He is doing.
He has not abandoned us, but is daily cleansing us. If it is the desire of your
heart to marry and raise a family, Christ most certainly will make this
possible. We have seen this happen time and time again. It is disbelief that
traps and discourages and brings on a state of hopelessness. Disbelief
effectively stops the change process and blocks the Holy Spirit when he
attempts to reach us, to bring important life-changing messages. 2 Cor. 5:17 in
the Amplified Bible reads, "Therefore, if any person is in Christ, the
Messiah, he is a new creature altogether, a new creation; the old previous
moral and spiritual condition has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has
come!"
"EX-GAY": Why is it that the term
"ex-gay" so threatens the gay community? It implies that one remains
homosexual by choice. That the gay person need not continue in the homosexual
lifestyle is an unsettling message. It is far easier to believe that there is
no way out than to contemplate the rigors of the change process. Let no one
deceive themselves by thinking that leaving the homosexual lifestyle is an easy
thing to do. It is extremely difficult. It is only when we totally give up and
say, "Lord, I can't do it on my own", that we allow God the opportunity
to come in and begin to remake our lives. The process is slow and the gay
person encounters much in the way of spiritual warfare. The enemy does not
allow anyone to easily slip out of his control. Indeed, the ex-gay person
passes through the fire.
How do we, those of us
who are ex-gay, bear up under such a label? First, I have never found anyone
who is enthusiastic about the label. It is a scar on the side and nail prints
on the hands. It is insufficient identity and a poor trade-off for the former
identity of being a homosexual. Again, just as it is not valid to use our sin
as our identity, it is also not valid to use our former sin to form our
identity. We are Christians who were formerly homosexuals. We may be Christians
who still struggle with homosexuality, but we are first and foremost
Christians. We are the property of Jesus Christ, no longer our own. Why then
the label "ex-gay"? What purpose does it serve: It is our witness to
the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. It is the ray of hope that flickers
within the gay community that homosexuality is not a terminal condition. In
itself, it says, "There IS a way out!"
CHANGE IS REAL: The changes Christ makes in a
life are fact, not fraud or fantasy. The changes continue from the moment we
accept Christ as Lord of our life until the day we see Him face to face. We can
never expect perfection in this life, yet we can have every reason to expect
continual change that brings us ever closer to the image of Christ. The idea
that the ex-gay person is claiming to have arrived at perfection is a wrong
comprehension of the term. What does "ex-gay" mean? It is a statement
of fact: I am no longer the same. God has changed me, He is changing me, and He
most certainly will continue to change me!
At 44 I was suicidal and wanted out, but I
had never seen anyone leave the gay lifestyle, except by death. Everyone said:
"Once gay, always gay." I was so miserable that I took a desperate
leap of faith, I returned to the faith of my youth. I realized that it hadn't helped
me when I was young, but I had no other choice outside of suicide. I had only
the smallest degree of faith that anything would happen, but to my surprise,
that thimble of faith was enough to work miraculous change. I am now in my 23rd
year of helping people escape the gay lifestyle. I have been married for 11
years and would never go back to the misery and lies of the gay lifestyle. I am
thankful every day for my new life. There is more happiness now in one day of
my life than all the twenty-five years I spent in that lifestyle of treachery
and deceit.
All Homosexuals Can Change
The first issue I would like to address is
that there is no one, no matter if they have had a sex-change operation, or
have lived crossed dressed for years that cannot change. Change is available to
every person struggling with homosexuality. There are no special classes of
inverts and perverts. Any motivated person can change. Age may play a factor in
motivation. Contrary to the apparent findings of Lawrence Hatterer (Changing
Homosexuality in the Male) I have found that the older person is more
motivated toward change. He has seen all the aspects of the lifestyle and it no
longer holds any mystery for him. By 40, many are ready and willing for change,
they are completely disillusioned with the lifestyle.
Motivation
Uh, you might say: "There is the rub.
The unmotivated homosexual cannot change, so not all homosexuals can
change." Let me remind you that the unmotivated person cannot accomplish
anything whether he is learning the computer or attempting to drive a truck.
There are unmotivated homosexuals, a high percentage of them, but this does not
mean if they find the motivation that they cannot change.
It is the work of the psychological community
to instill hope, this is one of the most basic premises of counseling. If the
counselor or therapist does not offer hope, where will the counselee find hope?
The field of psychology is for the most part telling the person struggling with
homosexuality that change is impossible and unnecessary. Most of the mainline
churches are in agreement with the psychological community. Without hope the
people perish.
Faith
Strangely, the psychological community has
overlooked one of the most powerful tools available to them, that is faith.
Mankind was created to worship. If man will not worship God, then man will
worship man. Is it any surprise that gays often call a hunky man, "A Greek
God"? A look through past history will show that until recently, worship
of the Creator was a central theme in man's daily life. Faith and worship are
the greatest motivational factors that can be found. How is it possible to help
a counselee if you work only with the body and the soul and ignore the spirit?
People marvel at the success of Alcoholic's
Anonymous. What is their central theme? Faith in a "Higher Power." To
Christians, this higher power is Jesus Christ. I am often asked about the
method I use. Yes, to some degree, there is a structured program or method, but
it is not this structure that brings the change, it is faith that changes
lives.
Change Is Extremely Difficult
None of this is to say that because one has
faith and a structured program that leaving the gay lifestyle is easy. It may
be one of the most difficult adjustments ever required of a person. There are a
number of misbeliefs or lies that must be challenged. The foremost of these is
that change is impossible. The one thing that breaks through this deeply
embedded belief is that while much may be impossible for man, nothing is
impossible for God.
Many would like to continue on in their
contacts with the gay world. Unless a complete break is made, change will be
impeded. This reluctance to break with friends, move from a gay ghetto area,
perhaps quit a job and leave behind clothing and all articles connected with
the gay lifestyle, prevents change from taking place, the old continues to
reinforce itself and the new has no chance of developing.
The First Step: A Decisive Decision
As we have said, motivation for change is a
difficult thing to find. Generally, the trials of the gay lifestyle will not
produce sufficient motivation for change even though there has been great
suffering. A desire to conform to the standards of society and to be well
thought of will not produce sufficient motivation to carry the person through
the rapids of the change process. Only a deep abiding faith in God is strong
enough to produce the motivation to make a decisive decision that will hold up
through times of temptation and ridicule from fellow gays.
Working Through The Primary And Secondary
Issues
The homosexual person will come to you
because his attempts at finding peace and happiness have failed. He comes
because he is in pain. He usually comes because the secondary issues have
become overwhelming and he can no longer function. He has come to hate himself
and everything about his life. Yet, his concern is only with the product or
symptoms of his abnormal lifestyle and he has no knowledge of the root causes
of his problem.
If you attend to his presenting problems, he
may go away temporarily happy, but this relief will not last. What are some of
the presenting problems? Rejection, a lover just left, someone significant has
discovered his homosexual nature and broke relationship with him, he may be
addicted to alcohol or drugs which he uses to escape the trials of his
lifestyle. He may have become very irresponsible, abandoning his
responsibilities, like paying rent, meeting credit card payments, keeping old
friendships alive, feeling guilty for letting down his parents and friends, there
can be a number of discomforting problems that have caused his unhappiness. But
none of these are his root problems and unless they are addressed discomfort
will return.
The primary issues that counselors seldom
address are those long term issues that cannot be quickly resolved. These are
the issues that berthed homosexuality in the first place. Lack of affirmation,
lack of a sense of belonging, abuse/molestation, the effects of labeling,
unfairness, victimization, and fear.
The immediate family of the counselee may be
non-existent, dysfunctional, or hostile. The very people that should have
supplied him with the affirmation needed to mature into a heterosexual person
have instead, robbed him of these primary ingredients to a healthy life. He has
sought to find these things in the gay lifestyle, but the results were similar,
there is no rejection stronger than gay to gay. I know of no better family
replacement than the church. An enlightened church group can supply the things
that have been missing since early childhood, the affirmation, sense of
belonging, concern for his victimization, release of his guilt feelings, and
general love and acceptance. The wise counselor will realize that counsel alone
is inadequate, there must be an affirming group outside of the counseling
session that can supply what the counselor cannot.
How Ex-Gay Ministries Fill The Gap
Because the church may be less than it should
be, ex-gay ministries fill the gap, and prepare the way for entry into the
church. Some ministries, like New Hope
have year-long residential programs. Here, the needs for affirmation and a
sense of belonging are met. There are now somewhere around 200 ex-gay
ministries around the world. Only a few, however offer a residential program,
but it remains the most effective program for change.
A Long Journey
The gay person seeking help will be embarking
on a long journey. We are not talking weeks or months, but years. Since
everyone proceeds at their own speed, it is difficult to project the amount of
time for change to take place. The minimum times span I have seen has been
three years, maximum can be a lifetime. It largely depends on the willingness
to make hard choices and to hold to the initial decision for change. Every
failure pushes victory further into the future. He must not lose sight of his
goal.
After giving up sexual acting out, many
homosexual strugglers move on to the next step, which is developing emotionally
dependent relationships. In fact, many main-line churches who disapprove of
homosexual acts encourage these kinds of relationships, however, necessary step
that it might be, it is still unhealthy and must be worked through. We often
refer to these relationships as emotional vampirism. These relationships suck
the live-blood out of the person who feels the need to minister to the
homosexual struggler. Sadly, some Christian counselors still cling to the
belief that one person can meet all the needs of the struggler, this just isn't
so. It is a set-up for disappointment and failure. It is too great a burden for
any one person to carry and results in unrealistic expectations. The struggler
needs at least three or four people that are willing to become friends and
offer their help. These dependent relationships are unhealthy for the struggler
and the caregiver.
Is Heterosexuality Possible?
Yes, there is something beyond celibate
homosexuality. Same-sex attractions do fade and opposite attractions do emerge
as a result from a clean break from the old lifestyle. It is of vital
importance that the counselee hold to the belief that change is possible.
Proverbs 23:7 reads: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." This
is a wise proverb. We are today where our thoughts of yesterday have brought
us. The one that can view the change process as an adventure filled with
excitement and challenge will find change developing at a consistent rate. The
one who still believes that change may be impossible will not see the change he
desires.
Certainly no one should entertain the idea of
marriage until sufficient healing has taken place. I would never suggest
marriage for anyone who has not had at least three years of absolute celibacy.
Because the process of change is a long process, there may come times of deep
disappointment when old desires and fantasies return. Often change is a three
steps forward, two steps backward kind of process. The counselor must allow for
times of failure but view the overall progress. Are the failures coming further
and further apart, despite the failures are their still signs of progress. Are
the failures met with guilt feelings and despair? Is the person growing through
their failures?
I am a pastor of a small church and I see
many straight men fearful of marriage and commitment, so it is to be expected
that an ex-gay person might be doubly fearful of marriage and sexual
performance in marriage. We must not make marriage the ultimate goal for every
ex-gay person. Yes, we are delighted when our men marry and raise a family, and
it is healthy and good, but success can also be a responsible, fulfilling
single life as well. We must not assume that if a person is still single,
change has not taken place. We must be aware that marriage alone is no sign of
change.
A New Life
All homosexual people can enjoy a new life.
None are excluded from entering into a healthy, wholesome new lifestyle. Almost
none make it alone, it requires the help of others along the way. I find that
those whose faith is weak or non-existent generally do not make it. Those with
a strong, abiding faith have the motivating force to carry them through years
of difficulties and into a wonderful new existence they never thought possible.
homoseksualiteit.
Getuigenis van Frank Worthen
"Born
Anew to a Living Hope"
My pastor took me into his
office and said, "Frank, you are a homosexual." Being only thirteen,
I needed him to explain same-sex attraction. He did. Then he added that
homosexuals were different from other people.
I'd been called different
before! When my mother took me to kindergarten, my teacher told her, "Your
boy is very different from the other boys." And she was right; I'd
detached from my family's constant arguing by hiding in the attic and creating
my own fantasy world. In response to my patterns of isolation, my peers called
me names (which I later learned meant "homosexual").
When I was ten, I began
taking piano lessons. My piano teacher knew the Lord in a powerful way. She was
ecstatic when, three years later, I accepted Him. She took me to her church,
where I began to study organ.
My father died that year.
The pastor took an interest in me, assuming the "father" role in my
life. He was everything I looked for in a father! But in my heart, I hoped he
was wrong about me being a homosexual. Certainly, I was different; I had no
friends, I wasn't into sports, and I devoted a lot of time to music. Still, I
hoped that I was just late in developing opposite-sex attractions.
When I turned eighteen, I
met a young lady. We went together for about a year. It was very exciting to
think, Thank God, I'm normal! I love this woman and I want to marry her. So
I proposed. She answered, "There are only two things that I love:
horses and other women." Crushed, I returned to my pastor, who told me
that I'd been attracted to my girlfriend's masculinity. He reasoned, "I've
been telling you for years that you are a homosexual." I left the church
that day, making the decision to accept my homosexuality. Since "God's
man" had convinced me that I was homosexual, I hoped that God would accept
me.
I entered the gay lifestyle
at that time. By accepting my homosexuality, I believed I'd found where I
belonged. The male homosexual lifestyle, however, is built on youth. And so, by
the time I was 40, it was pretty much over for me. The only steady lover I
could find wasn't even really homosexualhe just stayed with me for the money!
But even then, we both cheated on each other. It was very depressing.
The business I owned
required me to travel around the world a great deal. During one of my trips,
the manager of my biggest store hired a "hippie" boy. Though I didn't
want Michael there at all, the manager promised to keep him out of the
customers' sight if I'd let him work in the stock room. I agreed, reluctantly.
Returning from another
trip, I was startled to see Michael with short hair, properly washed, and
working at the front counter. He was efficient, the customers loved him, and he
smiled all the time. Finally, after a week of watching him, I asked, "What
in the world happened to you?"
He answered, "I
accepted the Lord." I wondered if Michael's Christianity would last.
During the following year, his life kept getting brighter and brighter. I began
to wonder if God could change me the way He had changed Michael. But I told
myself, "No. God has never changed a homosexual person." I vacillated
between hope and despair.
One day, the Lord spoke to
me, saying, "Today I want you back." I knew, without a doubt, that
this was the voice of God. I ran to the store and located Michael, gasping,
"I've just heard from God, I don't know what to do." I was beside
myself. Michael responded that he had the keys to his church, and suggested
that we go over there to pray.
Michael had me kneel on the
altar's marble steps as he led me through a 20 minute sinner's prayer! Because
he knew nothing about homosexual activity, he had me confessing all kinds of
things I'd never done. But I wanted everything God had for me, so I thought,
"If I have to do this to change, I'll confess anything!" When the
prayer ended, the Lord's Spirit came alive in my heart. I came out of the
church a changed person!
When I went to Michael's
church, the people expressed love for me. Later I learned that they'd spent two
years praying for "Michael's gay boss." And for the next year and a
half, people from that church came to see me every day! That accountability
kept me from going back to the homosexual lifestyle.
At Michael's suggestion, I
made a testimony tape to reach out to people who were trapped in the homosexual
lifestyle. I decided to advertise the tape in the worst sex paper in town. The
ad read: "Do you want out of homosexuality? Send for a Brother Frank tape
on a Christ-centered way out of homosexuality." During the first year of
its run, my ad brought in 60 people who wanted out of homosexuality! Men in my
own church sought me out for counseling on leaving homosexuality. After a
while, I started meeting with these men on Saturdays.
Eventually, the Lord put me
in contact with a pastor who needed help in counseling homosexuals. Since he
was a writer, he and I produced a book called "The Third Sex?" (the
first Christian book on homosexuality). Going all over the English-speaking
world, that book generated an average of 200 letters a month.
Though I'd had no intention
of leaving my business, the Lord impressed me with the need to enter ministry
full-time. Thus, Love In Action began with weekly support group meetings.
After a little time had
passed, I received a distraught phone call from Barbara Johnson, a woman in Los Angeles. Barbara's
son had entered the homosexual lifestyle, but the ex-gay ministry there didn't
offer ministry to parents. This was the first time I'd ever heard of any ex-gay
ministry besides Love In Action! Intrigued, I hopped on a plane the next
morning and went down to see them.
When I met with the
Director and the staff of Exit Ministry in Anaheim, California,
we wondered if any other ex-gay ministries existed. I was very impressed with
the organization of Exit Ministry. I asked them to train my staff at a meeting
the following year. They agreed. After I left, the staff began calling churches
around the country and found a number of ex-gay ministries. In the middle of
1976 we had our first conference. It was far more than I expected, sixty people
representing twelve ministries attended. About the third day of the conference
we knew this was not just a one time event, but would be a continuing thing:
Exodus was born.
My busy life satisfied me.
I enjoyed my work and loved my church. I felt secure and complete, able to
settle into a life of comfortable celibacy. After five years, I sensed I was
ready for marriage, but was unwilling to make the time commitment involved. I
often worked in the office from morning to midnight. How could I give a wife
proper attention? I saw no compelling reason to seek marriage.
Around the tenth year of
celibacy, however, I began to grow uncomfortable with the single life.
Intensely lonely, I began to pray for a mate. During this time, the Love in
Action team held a seminar in Eugene,
Oregon. I noticed the lady who
sponsored the event across the room rapidly talking with a group of people. I
thought, "What a hyper lady! I don't think I want to get involved with
her!" So I kept my distance. I felt quite sure I never wanted to meet her!
A year and a half later, I
visited Los Angeles with the director of Exodus'
London
ministry. We were on our way to Disneyland and
had stopped by Barbara Johnson's house to pick up some passes. Barbara told me
that she was obligated to take this woman to Disneyland,
but that she just didn't have the time. Essentially, I would be doing her a
favor if I could take this woman with us.
I was not happy at the
prospect, but there is not much I wouldn't do for Barbara. So I agreed to take
this woman along. She introduced us to Anita whom I had no idea I had ever met
before. (Actually Barbara introduced me to her the day before at a conference I
did, but I met so many people I didn't remember her.) Sometime during the day
at Disneyland it came out that Anita had sponsored a conference in Eugene, Oregon
where I was the conference speaker. I then remember that I had carefully
avoided her, she was so hyper. The day at Disneyland
proved to be the most fun I had enjoyed in years. Anita was light hearted and
the life of the party. I thoroughly enjoyed her company and dreaded to see the
day come to a close.
The next day, Chris and I
returned to San Rafael
and I became immersed in the day-to-day pressures of the ministry. The memory
of that relaxing day faded until Barbara called to say that Anita had
apparently liked me. Excitedly, I thought, "A woman really 'likes' me! Guess
I did something right!" But calmly, I told Barbara that I couldn't
remember having a better day. I asked her to tell Anita that I liked her very
much also.
A month or so later,
Barbara called again. This time she said that she and four other women were
coming north to visit me. Since my late hours at the Love in Action office had
never given me reason to furnish my home, I frantically prepared my condominium
so that they would have a comfortable stay. Later Barbara called to say only
three were coming, then again, only two, lastly that it would be only Anita. I
panicked, how would that sound? "Director of Ex-gay Ministry Hosts Single
Woman in Newly Furnished Apartment!"
Lori Thorkelson, a lady on
Love In Action's staff, came to my rescue by agreeing to stay with Anita in my
guest room. As a result of that week, Lori built a firm friendship with Anita
and she was invaluable in helping me keep my romantic relationship on an even
course. (Later, when I went to Europe for
three months, I left a stack of cards for Lori to send Anita every few days, so
Anita would know I was thinking of her.)
For Anita, it had been love
at first sight (for the ministry that is). She became completely enamored with
Love in Action. She loved all the staff and the work we were doing. She wanted
to be part of it all. She cried all the way to the train station. It would take
time for Anita's love for me to match her love for LIA.
Late one night Anita called
me and wanted to see me. I suggested that she get in her car and drive to San Luis Obispo, the half-way point between Los Angeles and San
Francisco. She was a little surprised that I was so
impulsive, but she wasn't willing to act on the spur of the moment. So we
agreed to meet there in a few days. This rendezvous inaugurated a series of
long drives to our half-way point (about a 500 mile round trip for
each of us).
During these times, we had
many meaningful talks about marriage. I was already fifty-five, which made me
uncertain that I could consummate our marriage. We decided that a life together
was far better than our long-distance relationship. We would have each other,
and that would be enough. (As it turned out, my worries were needless.)
Our marriage has been far
better than our greatest expectations. The honeymoon continues!
Herodias was
Koning Herodes is gaan
waarin haar nabijheid hen dwingt.
tegen hun eigen wil in smachtend verlangen.
woorden is.
verkroppen. Koning Herodes is treurig.
Herodias kijkt goedkeurend
toe. Herodes is erin geluisd.
Toen Jezus predikte waren
Zo kwam Hij in Nazaret,
De Geest van de Heer rust op mij;
voorhouden: Dokter, genees jezelf!
ging Hij zijns weegs.
In hun harten
Volgens Frederick Von
Gagern:
aanvaarden.
Hij zei : Men
Neem u in acht,
slechte daden.
We zorgen eigenlijk zelf
Jij
vellen, BEN JE GEEN OORDEEL AAN HET VELLEN.
VELLEN. Je helpt dan je naaste uit liefde. Wat is
liefde anders?" - OLVrouw, 18 juni 1982
