My dad warned me: Bangkok was crowed, polluted and chaotic. Why would I want to go there?
Well, here are the reasons why Bangkok was a blast:
1. We went on a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya river. In between loads of fat western men and their thai girlfriends, we sat a table ready for the huge and delicious buffet. while eating we were entertained by the usual romantic songs. They even played celine Dions titanic song
2. a drink in the sky bar at dyzzing heights at the top of a skyscraper. Bangkok really is an urban jungle that dwarfs every belgian city. High rises everywhere, shopping malls, movietheathers and all the other modern comforts.
3. Kao San Road. ThE Most Touristy Road On Earth. But still fun to see and great for shopping, cheap juices and cocktails. And great people watching is so much fun.
4.Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Phra Kaew. The buddha is worshipped everywhere in the most beautiful temples that I have ever seen.
5. Bangkok zoo.: We took a good look at the snakes here in so in case we re bitten, we can recognize immediatly wich kind of snake it was.
And much more of course, but my time on the net is running out.
OK, we are in Thailand now and we did not notice anything strange about the english used here. In Nepal, the people have their own version and spelling of some words that makes you laugh out loud. Here are the most hilarious ones ( with translation of course ;-)):
Apple filters .... apple fritters corn flacks ... corn flakes side seens .... sightseeing lassaniya ... lasagne wall drop salad ... waldorf salad plean omlate.... plain omlette apple crambul.... apple crumble trakin rood... trekking road
And many more. but you have to give the Nepalis some credit, they try very hard to makes everything as easy as possible for you. It a lot better than trying to decode a russian menu, only to order something that is not available.
A word of gratitude for Marvel Tours in Kathmandu
who were able to arrange a ticket for our fliht to bangkok on such
short notice. Their service is so friendly and good and we recommend
them for all your travel in Nepal (airtickets, trekking and other
things such as rafting or chitwan safari). They just keep on trying to
serve you as best as possible.

If you think that Nepal and the Himalayas are the cutting edge of adventure travel, then you are very WRONG!! All suffering here is completely self-inflicted. I`m sure I`m going to suffer a `little bit` while on trekking, but it is my own choice not to take any porters to carry my pack up the hills. Kathmandu is a very chaotic, loud and polluted city but the nepalis try everything to make you feel more at home. For a few rupees you can take a cab across the city, eat chocolate croissants and stay in a nice room with a tiled bathroom ( ideal for the people who are not in possession of steel guts). In the tourist ghetto, Thamel, everything is geared towards tourism. Tourism is the country`s main industry. Hundreds of shops line the streets where you can buy North Fake gear, kitchy souvenirs and clothes for the hippie lifestyle. And while the old hippie vibe of Kathmandu might have gone, nepalis still make that mysterious coughing sound `hashisch` in the touristic epicentre of Thamel. Pokhara is more of the same, but not so crowded and dirty, with complimentary lake and mountainviews trown in. What a difference to Central Asia, where you had to look for hours and still only find a restaurant with surly wiatresses, a russian only menu and in the end a choice limited to laghman and plov. The comfortjunkie in me is enjoying Nepal very much!
But don`t let all these touristtraps disuade you form coming here, because the country is just so damn beautiful!
We begrijpen
The Central Asia chapter of our travels is now definitely over and we got through it without a scratch. This in spite of accepting a ride in a very old Lada Niva trough the Tajik mountains, soaking in a radioactive hot spring and going on Soviet-era amusement park rides. To remember the little things that the Lonely Planet will never be able to tell you, the jury will give an Academy Award to the most striking event or person in four categories. If you have any objections, please contact me at jloweyball@yahoo.com.
Best accommodation
Nominees:
Bahodir`s, Samarqand: The only address in Samarqand for any self respecting backpacker. The rooms are nothing special, but excellent value meals, loads of free tea and many species of travellers that were not to be found anywhere else made this hostel so memorable.
Madina and Ilyos, Bukhara: Not that the actual hotel is undergoing renovation; Madina had to resort to working the streets. She plucked us of the street as soon as we arrived and took us to her sisters home. Her sisters husband makes sweets there, how cool is that? There we were entertained by three kids, a puppy dog and a hungry cat. Madina's sister is an excellent cook and stuffed us with huge meals and homemade sweets.
The Yurt of Iris and Marat, Kilemche jailoo: On the second day of our trek from the SongKolLake to Jumgal, we were welcomed by Marat and his family in his yurt. They sat together with us, we sang songs and they made us very comfortable beds. In the morning they even offered us kumis, which we politely declined.
Our North Face tent: By the lakes of Tajikistan, in the Kyrgyz jailoos, our tent was our home many times. It withstood temperatures from +20 to -10, bright sunshine and a snowstorm without failing us.
And the winner is..... Bahodir`s in Samarkand. The hotel with the best atmosphere in the whole of Central Asia and maybe beyond. There we formed our very own tour group for Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz jailoos, this company also prevented Hendrik and me from getting to much on each others nerves.
Most memorable song
Kalinka: Quintessential Russian classic, but we invented a little variation called `Rufina` in the honor of the though Soviet granny that ran the alpine camp in Tajikistan.
Desireless Voyage, voyage: Not only is the song title right! When we heard this song in the shared taxi from Tashkent to the Fergana valley, everyone in the car went crazy and sang this song out loud.
Modern Talking Brother Louie: When we went out for dinner I didnt expect to dance to this song with a Kyrgyz journalist who sustained severe traumas from an attack of Muslim extremists. Amas, when working as a journalist in southern Kyrgyzstan, came into contact with the violent Islamic rebels there. He and his colleague were both badly injured by the rebels when they tried to interview them. His nose still hasnt recovered and his colleague is still in the hospital.
The Holly Dolly song: Nice but also irritating tune similar to the Crazy Frog song. These songs have a habit of staying in your head for way too long, especially when you hear them while your car has broken down in the middle of nowhere and the driver doesnt speak English.
And the winner is ... Brother Louie because its such a catchy tune and I had such an interesting dancing partner.
Most nerve wrecking annoyance
Snoring concerto in the dormitory: Some people snore a little bit, some snore a lot and some cant sleep because of the snoring of others. One of the noisemakers snored loud, consistently and even when you pushed him. Someone else snored and then pretended to suffocate and another one threatened to kill you if you dared to disturb his sleep.
Bureaucracy: Dealing with a Russian visa, arranging flight tickets, looking for a travel agent,... Why cant it be straightforward? Our friend Bertie would say thats Central Asia but we wasted at least week of travel time dealing with it.
Kyrgyz money in Tashkent: Changing Kyrgyz money in Tashkent is impossible, ok, no problem. But is it so difficult to tell me that? Rolling your eyes and sending me away was not an answer. Luckily it wasnt that much money but I keep thinking what I could have bought with it here in Kathmandu.
`Rip me off`: The first weeks in Uzbekistan I had a `rip me off`-sticker permanently glued to my head. Cabdrivers, vendors in the bazaars and moneychangers, they all tried to. The worst was the drive to the Kyrgyz border, where we paid the driver to take us trough to border, but that isnt even possible.
And the winner is ... bureaucracy. I hate it in Belgium, so I hate it even more while travelling.
Most disappointing meal
Mir burger in Tashkent: In the mountains, with little tasty food, we often fantasized about a nice and juicy burger when we got back to civilization, but the one in Mir was so tasteless we were terribly disappointed.
Home stay breakfast in Kochkor: Our first breakfast there, she served us baked potatoes an onions. It was ok and filling but it doesnt make good fuel for a day hiking, because of the heightened gas production.
Manti filled with mutton fat, Bukhara: Manti are steamed dumplings stuffed with meat, supposedly a speciality in Uzbekistan, so I had to try. But the first one I tasted was awful; it seemed they had forgotten to put meat in there.
Dehydrated food: Its light and it doesnt waste much fuel but thats all the good news. I usually devour every ounce of food, but I had to force myself to eat this chemical junk for two weeks.
And the winner is.... dehydrated food, I know that because of this Ill never be a tough mountaineer, but I just cant stand it!!
Some special things that happened to us do not fit into a category but they are too interesting to leave them out of the Central Asia awards:
- James Bond is a movie character but bond girls exist for real. We saw one at the beach in Cholpon Ata. This blonde Russian babe was wearing a sparkling golden bikini, drinking vodka shots and flirting with the maffioso types surrounding her...
- Some people really do know nothing about mountains, and this time they were Belgian! Who thinks about going on a day hike to 3500m over snow slopes in a skirt and sandals?
- Uzbekistan Airways is the best carrier in Central Asia, but it still not up to western standards. Strangely enough, what disturbed me the most was how ugly the stewardesses were.
