As usual we tested the maximum surface temperatures of the case after several hours of constant load of the hardware. The Acer Aspire One 531 reached somewhat higher temperatures than expected, despite the inclusion of energy efficient components. On the upper side of the base unit a maximum temperature of 38.3 °C can be observed on the left rear area of the keyboard. In the English language, a tablet is a flat slab of something that’s intended for inscription, and that definitely applies to modern day tablet computers. Overall, the tablet design emphasizes simplicity and portability, and companies compete in offering the thinnest and lightest devices.

Current tablets are powered by a wide range of processors, with the most popular being NVIDIA’s Tegra series, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and ARM’s Cortex A-series of chips. While some might argue that the Portable Media Players (PMPs) of the early 2000’s were the predecessor for the modern day tablet, we tend to entail most of that credit with the late-Steve Jobs instead. The iPad benefited from hardware advancements that allowed it to be thin and fast, and though it was originally ridiculed due to its similarity to the iPhone, it still managed to post record profits.

One of the biggest pluses that tablets have to offer is that almost anybody can find at least some use for it due to the almost endless amount of applications. Almost any app you can think of probably exists out there in some shape or form, and neat touchscreen and gyroscopic controls make these apps a pleasure to use.Asus 90NLF1B2000Z As such, kids can get their gaming fix from tablets, adults can surf the web and watch movies on the go, employees can have more diverse ways of getting their work done, and students can benefit from reading electronic textbooks or studying using interactive apps.

In a recent survey conducted by Google’s AdMob, it was revealed that most tablet owners mainly use their tablets for gaming, followed by searching for info and emailing. In any case, most tablet manufacturers market them as secondary rather than primary computing devices, leading to a higher chance of co-existence with personal PCs. And of course, the touchscreens allow for easier use in certain applications, and further advances will only increase the sensitivity and give way for more intuitive ways of user interfacing.

As we mentioned earlier, Apple’s iPad was arguably the first official tablet released and it enjoyed a near monopoly on the market for a little less than a year. However, with the introduction of Google’s more tablet-oriented Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating systems, more and more users are making the jump over to the Android atmosphere. On the other hand, Android tablets come in many different forms, so much so that some customers may have difficulty choosing; especially since popular manufacturers such as Sony, ASUS, Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon and even Barnes & Noble all produce Android tablets. Ultimately, the success of a tablet may not rest upon its hardware specifications or design, but rather on software ease of use and application availability. With regards to usability, Apple probably has the slight edge, as Apple’s OS is generally more friendly and fluid and many users are already accustomed to iOS from experiencing the iPhone or iPod Touch. Unfortunately for Google, Android doesn’t fare much better when it comes to apps as Apple’s App Store reigns supreme in terms of both application numbers and general quality. On the other hand, Android does have approximately 10,000 more free applications than iOS, but keep in mind that most analysts tend to view them as lower quality compared to iOS apps.

The differences between the two rivals become clearer when you take a look at the amount of tablets moved, as Apple managed to sell 9.25 Million iPads during Q3 of 2011 while only 1.2 Million Android tablets were sold in all of 2011. Of course, the iOS vs. Android debate is probably too big to be settled in this article alone, but Apple and the iPad appear to be winning due to build and app quality along with ease of use. With the ever increasing number of tablets out there, we know it can be hard to make a decision on what to buy. After looking at various categories, including pricing, hardware, software and design, we can safely recommend the following devices:Asus AP23-T91

At just .34 inches (8.8mm) thick, the iPad 2 is 35% thinner than the original iPad and comes with a 9.7” IPS display, a 1GHz Cortex A5 CPU, 512MB of RAM and is available in 16, 32 and 64GB sizes with Wi-Fi or 3G. You can read our full review here, but the iPad 2 definitely tops our tablet list thanks to its lightweight design and the number of apps available. As such, until Apple announces their iPad 3, we can whole-heartedly recommend the current iPad for those in search of a tablet.Asus 15G10N381200

Possibly the most popular Android tablet out there, the Transformer introduced a new concept by adding a detachable keyboard that doubles as both a docking station and an extra battery. In addition, the Transformer comes with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 10.1” IPS display,Asus 15G10N381200CM-2 micro-SD reader and is available in 16GB/32GB models, but with no 3G option. Our comprehensive review can be found here, and we definitely like the Transformer from the available Android tablets, especially since it is cheaper than much of the competition.

Price: $399 for the 16GB model, $499 for the 32GB model; however, the keyboard dock tacks on another $100. We expect price drops across the board once the Transformer Prime releases before the end of the year in the U.S.

Though ASUS has yet to release their next-gen tablet, it managed a spot on our list thanks to its tantalizing specs. The 8.3mm thick tablet, which comes in 32GB and 64GB flavors, is upgradeable to Android 4.0 ICS and should be the first NVIDIA Tegra 3 tablet to hit the market. In addition, its mobile dock can apparently extend battery life by up to an astonishing 18 hours. ASUS has currently begun accepting pre-orders for UK customers, with the US launch set for December 19th.Asus A34-M90

Next in line on the Android circuit is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which comes in 10.1”, 8.9”, 7.7” and 7” models. Thus, the Galaxy Tab has the full spectrum covered due to its various screen sizes with Wi-Fi/3G options and even 4G on select Tab models (7.7, 8.9 and 10.1). Samsung’s tablets also feature the custom UI TouchWiz,Asus A34-W90 L0690L6 which adds certain widgets and easy-access menus. Furthermore, the Tab is about the same thickness as the iPad 2, and all the devices come with Samsung’s signature AMOLED displays.It’s a tough choice between the Transformer and Galaxy Tabs, but if you have no interest in the docking station then the Tab may be the way to go.Asus NBP12A100

One of the newer devices to hit the market, the Kindle Fire only comes with a dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4 CPU, no cameras, 512MB of RAM and only 8GB of SSD storage. However, the Fire benefits immensely from its integration with Amazon’s services and its sub-$200 price tag. The tablet also comes with a 7” IPS display and only weighs 14.6 oz (413 grams), but doesn’t offer as much “punch” as the other Android tablets.Asus A32-W7

That and the screen's poor brightness result in matt and faded colors that can't be improved by the smooth screen surface, either. The consumer screen from Samsung doesn't come close to covering professional color spectrums. It fails in sRGB as well as the even more demanding AdobeRGB. But that is only of interest for graphic designers and photographers and shouldn't be that important for most users.Dell 312-0567

Toshiba Satellite L750 vs. AdobeRGBThe screen partly can't display all content satisfactory in very bright rooms or outdoors in daylight. Working with the notebook gets very difficult because of the moderate brightness and the reflective surface. The notebook can hardly be used in bright sunlight.Dell 0WR053

Viewing angles: Toshiba Satellite L750-16W The Samsung screen also quickly proves to be a low-cost consumer display looking at the viewing angles. While the colors can still be seen horizontally, they fade extremely when looking down on the screen. When looking up, it dims intensely and the colors invert tremendously. Dell PU563

The Toshiba Satellite L750/755 is available in many various configurations. Processor options range from the entry level Intel Core i3 2330M, the midrange processors Core i5 2410M and 2430M, up to the high performance Intel Core i7 2670QM. Intel's integrated HD Graphics 3000 or Nvidia's entry level graphics cards, GeForce GT 520M or the GeForce GT 525M can be selected as the graphics solution.Moreover, Toshiba advertises a Blu-Ray drive on its homepage that isn't available in any model of the range until now.Dell 312-0543

An Intel Core i5 2430M and an Nvidia GeForce GT 525M is installed in our Satellite L750-16W. Regrettably, Toshiba doesn't implement Nvidia's Optimus Technology, which activates the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated in the processor during undemanding graphic tasks and thus saves energy. Therefore, the HD Graphics is permanently disabled while the GeForce GT 525M has to calculate even the most basic tasks and unfortunately increases the power consumption a bit. Cinebench R11.5 assesses the CPU's performance by rendering a 3D scene. There aren't any surprises here. The Satellite achieves the same score as other, similar notebooks with an Intel Core i5 2430M, for example the Samsung Series 7 700Z5A, which however has a much stronger graphics card.The full capacity isn't available on battery power. The Satellite only manages 2.42 points rather than 2.66 points without an external power source in Cinebench R11.5.Dell FT092

PCMark from Futuremark calculates an index for each demand made on the computer and then combines them to a total score. It provides information on the performance of the entire system. The notebook unexpectedly scores a lot worse than expected here. Despite the strong single components, the Satellite L750 is clearly inferior to the Dell Inspiron 14z that has the same processor, but a weaker hard disk and no dedicated graphics card.Dell KX117

Dell's Inspiron doesn't apply the maximum clock of 2.8 GHz, but it runs stably with 2.6-2.7 GHz. The Satellite is defeated here. Although the feared throttling doesn't occur at first, the clock partly drops below the default clock of 2.4 GHz. Toshiba relies on an own creation for the hard disk. The installed mass memory is called MK7575GSX and can store a data capacity of 750 GB. The magnetic disk rotates with 7200 revolutions per minute, which consequently results in a faster HDD performance. The average transfer rate of 80 MB/s is impressive, although current SSDs have a considerably higher performance and a much lower access rate. Dell 312-0427

The built-in Nvidia GeForce GT 525M is located in the upper entry-level field. It manages approximately twice as many points as the integrated solution, Intel HD Graphics 3000, and is clearly below the performance of the popular GeForce GT 540M in 3DMark Vantage. The Toshiba L750 is always at the lower end of comparably equipped notebooks in the 3D benchmark tests that we executed. The device apparently can't exploit the maximum of the installed hardware here, either.

The graphics card is only suitable for playing current computer games with low requirements.Dell 312-0461 In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the resolution and other features have to be set to the lowest level so that the game runs just smoothly. The first person shooter isn't much fun to play in medium settings. Although the average refresh rate is 27 frames per second, the rate dropped to a very jerky 7 fps in an underwater scene. Then again, DIRT 3 could still be played well even in medium settings. Fans of the latest games should nevertheless turn to at least a GT 540M graphics solution.Dell 451-10339

The Toshiba Satellite L750 isn't really annoying in idle, but it's audible with a permanent hum. The hard disk remains pleasantly quiet despite its fast speeds and doesn't drown out the fan's noises. The optical drive can come to the fore when running, but it's not yet unduly annoying. The fan gets clearly audible during load, but the noise development is still within an acceptable range.Dell PD942

The notebook stays very cool in idle. The notebook doesn't heat up noticeably anywhere with a maximum of 28°C. Thus, it's possible to work comfortably with the notebook on the lap. The Satellite selectively heats up significantly during load and reaches a very warm 42°C on the bottom. The notebook's temperature doesn't increase at all in other places and remains below 30°C. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be used on the lap together with demanding tasks.Dell PD945

The processor and graphics card are loaded to full capacity for at least an hour in the stress test. This allows us to see how the notebook deals with very high load and if the Intel Core i5 manages to overclock to 3 GHz.Dell PD946

Regrettably, the Toshiba Satellite is disappointing in this situation. After starting FurMark and Prime95, the processor's clock rate nosedives from 2.8 GHz to very slow 800 MHz within a few seconds. The Satellite only manages very poor 0.75 points rather than 2.66 points in Cinebench R11.5. This phenomenon is called throttling and is a software-related limitation of the CPU rate during high power consumption. Dell RD850

It is to prevent the notebook from getting too hot, or over-exploiting the power capacity. The first can be excluded because neither the CPU nor the GPU exceed a temperature of 70°C. This is very low for a loaded chip. Thus, the ill has to be looked for in the insufficient power supply (75W power adapter). Dell RD857

After throttling sets in, the laptop has to be rebooted so that the full power is available again. When only the CPU is loaded, for example by Prime95, the notebook can process stably with 2.8 GHz. The same applies when only the GPU is loaded. This problem only turns up when both units run on full capacity and should therefore not often be an issue during practical use.Dell RD859

Consumer notebook speakers are often sported massively and not every sticker keeps its promise. The Japanese manufacturer, Onkyo, is responsible for these speakers.
Unfortunately, as so often the case in laptops, there is absolutely no bass. In return, the trebles and mids sound all the better. The good sound is surprising. The Satellite doesn't distort the usually critical high pitches even in high volume.Dell TD344

The power consumption isn't the notebook's biggest strength. Since the Optimus Technology hasn't been enabled by the manufacturer, the Nvidia graphics card also works in idle. Dell TD347As a result the idle rate of 12 watts is rather high despite an energy efficient processor. Notebooks with Optimus manage a power consumption of less than 8 watts in idle. The notebook even consumes power like "a big one" during load. The Satellite L750 could be mistaken for a basic gaming notebook in view of 78 watts. A 48 Wh lithium ion battery is used in the Satellite L750. The laptop manages a runtime of good four and a half hours with that. This battery life can only be achieved with disabled network adapters, the lowest screen brightness level and a basic text, such as displaying a text document.Dell UD260

Our WLAN surf test, where we simulate surfing on websites in medium brightness, is a lot more realistic. The notebook lasts for 220 minutes, which should be enough for most users.Dell UD264

When we streamed an HD trailer for The Avengers, images were extremely sharp and colors such as the blue in Captain America's costume and red in Thor's cape really popped. With its dual-core 1-GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU and 1GB of RAM, the Thrive 7-inch packs plenty of power. In our testing, the tablet was more than capable of delivering eye-popping graphics on intense 3D games such as Need for Speed Shift and Riptide GP. Playing high-quality videos, surfing the web, and taking pictures were also no problem. The Thrive 7-inch performed well on all the synthetic benchmarks we threw at it. Toshiba equips its Z830 with free-standing keys that are in a recess.TD175 It is exactly the same keyboard as in the sister model, Portégé R830-110 in terms of layout and lettering. The keys have a firm stroke. Their smooth surface is pleasant to use and doesn't leave any greasy fingerprints behind. The large key gap enables accurate typing, whereby the typing feedback seems too short. The reason is the low key drop. So-called ghosting turns up at wider angles, which will be familiar to everyone who looks at pictures or movies on a laptop. Narrow viewing angles are also the case in the Z830. We have to reckon with even stronger restrictions vertically. A deviation of only a few degrees up or downward distort the colors and the brightness decreases. The Intel Core i5 2467M (default: 1.60 GHz, Turbo up to 2.30 GHz) is an energy efficient, ultra low voltage dual core processor from the 2011 Intel Core generation (Sandy Bridge). It is currently the only available CPU alternative for the Z830 in Germany. The identical Portégé Z830 is sold with an i7 2677M or even i3 2367M processor in the USA. The Nvidia GeForce 310M is classified by NVidia as an entry level graphics card which has access to 512 MB of DDR3 memory. The memory is clocked at 790 MHz, while the core is at 625 MHz. The GPU is not really made with games in mind. The 310M supports DirectX-10.1 but not PhysX. The latter could not be used in this application anyway due to the cards level of performance. The 3DMark06 gave it a mere 3.245 points. We are familiar with negative results concerning the game play from plenty of other, comparable test units we have had which is why we decided not to do a gaming test at this point. The noise levels are quite remarkable and don't leave much to wish for. At a constant 30 dB(A), this 13.3" remains quite when at idle. Even when one gets the impression that the fan has turned itself off, it actually hasn't. Those who use Word and read E-Mails wont even notice the fan is running as this system doesn't go beyond 34.5 dB(A) when confronted with small and spontaneous increases in load. One can't complain about the heat which is generated either. At idle and during office use (which is the scenario that suits the Travelmate best), there are only a few parts that actually get warm (well under 30 degrees). Even during the stress test, we only saw 45 (top) and 40 degrees (underneath). The average values remain well under these however as parts of the base unit were still quite cool. The stereo loudspeakers of the 13.3" laptop can be found at the front behind the air intakes. They deliver a rather high pitched sound which is not all that pleasing. There is not base to speak of, and the settings in the control panel don't have any positive effect. (e.g. virtual surround). The volume they produce however is impressive considering their size. There was no noticeable distortion when the volume was turned to full. One area where the Acer TravelMate 8372TG really shines is the life. As it happens, the i3-350M is actually quite power hungry with its nominal usage of 35 Watts (TDP). Acer chose to compensate for this by installing a 87 Wh (6.000 mAh) and did so with notable success. The only things that suffer are the weight and the appearance due to the protruding . It took 5:22 hours (322 minutes) of web surfing until the Travelmate 8372TG needed to be charged up again. In comparison, the Asus PL30JT-RO030X (i5-520UM, 13.3"), with its low voltage CPU lasts for about 378 minutes (84 Wh). The DVD movie just kept on going and it wasn't until the 3rd showing that the Hobbits finally had to leave the stage. 6:45 hours (405 minutes). A full recharge takes a hefty 3:56 hours. This is a very long time but it is quite acceptable for a of this size. Toshiba PA3382U-1BAS

The Eater Readers Test, lasted a full 7:34 at idle (454 minutes). This is generally not applicable in the real world however as the WLAN was switched off, the TFT was on its lowest setting and the processor had gone to sleep (idle), through a complete lack of activity. Registering between 11.6 and 14.9 Watt, the power consumption of this 13.3" Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS laptop is not the lowest amongst the low voltage processors (<10 Watt idle depending on brightness and active wireless interfaces). It is still impressive however. A really conservative consumer of power such as the Asus PL30JT-RO030X (520UM) can shine in this segment, using 9.5 Watt during idle and 55.8 Watt under full load. When under maximum load (e.g. stress test), the Multimeter registered a maximum usage of 63.3 Watt. A realistic level of consumption would be around 15 to 20 Watt for office applications. The catch phrase of the Acer TravelMate TimelineX 8372TG-354G64N could be: Long life for a competitive price and good performance. Generally, the market would not pay almost 850 Euro for a Core i3-350M system, but it will if it is 13.3" with a dedicated, switchable graphics card. Those who are looking for the performance of a TimelineX 8372TG with a proper low voltage processor (with same life), will have to invest at least 1.500 Euro for a Core i7 640LM (HP EliteBook 2540p).Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS

The long run time of five to seven hours (WLAN surfing /DVD movie), is not the only advantage this 13.3" laptop has to offer. The aluminum/plastic casing (2.11 kilograms), is incredibly strong. The matt surfaces are ideally suited for professional office use. In addition there is also the exemplary ergonomics, the small amount of heat that is produced, and the fan which is very quiet. Business users will appreciate the docking station which connects to the Easy Port IV. Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS

The main weakness that we noticed, is a rather important one, and concerns the input. Toshiba PA3399U-2BAS The keys of the keyboard and touchpad have a very short stroke resulting in a lack of feedback to the user. The interfaces are limited, and this can also not be significantly improved upon by the docking station. There is neither an eSATA, nor ExpressCard or HDMI. There is one model available with UMTS (3G) for approx. 960 Euro (8372T-5454G32N). At the end of the day, the matt HD ready display didn't impress either. Those who are looking for an even longer life, and are willing to sacrifice performance, should take a look at the Asus PL30JT-RO030X. Auch unser Einstiegsmodell ist für das Anwendungsgebiet eines Ultrabooks ausreichend schnell. Ob das Surfen im Netz, Office-Programme oder auch die gelegentliche Bild- oder Videobearbeitung: Das U300s bietet für den Freizeit- und Alltagsgebrauch vollkommen ausreichende Leistungsreserven. Für die Encodierung von Videomaterial steht zusätzlich die dezidierte Quick-Sync-Einheit des Prozessors zur Verfügung, die schnell und zugleich stromsparend ihre Arbeit verrichtet. Leider zeigte unser Testgerät eine Anomalie bei der Leistungsfähigkeit der CPU,Akku Dell Latitude Z600 wenn zeitgleich der Akku geladen wird: Bis zu einem Ladestand von etwa 85 % verharrt der Prozessor auch unter Last auf seiner Leerlauftaktrate von 800 MHz. Während des Entladevorganges konnten wir keine derartige Auffälligkeit beobachten, auch im Netzbetrieb bei voller Akkuladung liefert die CPU ihre gewohnte Performance. Auch der subjektive Geschwindigkeitseindruck hat uns überzeugt: Mit nur 15 Sekunden für den Systemstart ist das U300s eines der schnellsten jemals getesten Notebooks; aus dem Standby erscheint der Anmeldebildschirm gar bereits nach zwei Sekunden. Die HD Graphics 3000 ist der aktuell schnellste integrierte Grafikchip von Intel. In Anbetracht der geringen Leistungsfähigkeit der Grafiklösung haben wir unsere Tests auf zwei aktuelle Spiele beschränkt. Fifa 12 hat sich bereits in der Vergangenheit als recht hardwareschonend erwiesen und läuft selbst in hohen Details, voller Display-Auflösung und 2x AA mit durchschnittlich 27,8 fps noch knapp flüssig. Das U300s ist ein angenehm ruhiger Zeitgenosse. Auch wenn der Lüfter dauerhaft läuft, ist das Gerät im Leerlauf mit 30,6 bis 31,4 dB(A) nie störend laut.
