Is a little more OK? (ASUS N71YI Charger )The Samsung 300E5A wants to stand out with high mobility at a low price, despite the lack of ULV hardware. Even the odd game isn't a problem for the Office notebook thanks to the switchable Nvidia GPU.

Probably no other sector (Asus K72DR Charger )of the notebook market is as fiercely competitive as low-priced Office devices. Despite the overwhelming abundance of devices, many only differ in detail - those that want to stick out of the crowd have to convey uniqueness.
Has the manufacturer, Samsung, accomplished this with its Series 3 300E5A? Even current games are allegedly playable on the matt, 15.6 inch screen with an exceptionally narrow bezel. The dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT 520MX is to ensure that. (Asus K72DY Charger )
Intel's Core i3-2330M takes c(Asus K72F Charger )are of the appropriate application performance. 4 GB of main memory and a hard disk capacity of 500 GB (model: S01DE) may only be average configuration specs, but will nevertheless likely prove to be sufficient for the targeted user group.
Similar all-rounders are primarily found among devices with AMD's Llano APU. The ThinkPad Edge E525 from Lenovo or even Dell's Vostro 3555 belongs to the fiercest contenders; both are available for around EUR 550,(Asus K72JK Charger )
just like the 300E5A(Asus K72JR Charger ) Who will benefit from the extra cost in contrast to pure Office notebooks, such as the Asus Pro P53E?
Case
Textured display lid
Teetering hingesThe design of the 300E5A's case is composed of elements from the 305V5A and E3520 models. The black-silver color combination can't exactly be called exciting, but it gives the laptop a quite elegant and high-end look. We already praised the wavy display's back in the past. It enhances the 300E5A's appearance and makes it particularly resistant against scratches, dust and fingerprints. The high-gloss coated keyboard surface, which Samsung should have done without, has exactly the opposite effect.
The merely 2.3 kilogram heavy notebook(Asus K72JT Charger )
convinces with its(Asus K72JU Charger ) compact dimensions of 368 x 243 x 33 millimeters (w x d x h), which is accomplished by its only 11 millimeter wide display bezel (15 millimeters at the top). A slightly greater use of materials would have likely not hurt the stability: Both the lack of torsional stiffness as well as the evident yielding under pressure, for example over the DVD drive or in the Charger's area, seem to have room for improvement. The manufacturing quality of the used plastic is better. Material transitions and gaps(Asus K72LN71 Charger )
hardly give reason for complaint.(Asus N71J Charger ) The display is held fairly loosely by two hinges. Although they are pulled so tight that both hands are needed for opening, vibrations let the display teeter vigorously. Comparatively high force is needed to twist the display despite its low thickness.
Overall, the 300E5A still achieves a good rating and places itself between the contenders from Lenovo and Dell. The given features are quite satisfactory for a low-priced Office laptop, even if particularly the chassis could be a bit more solid.

Connectivity
Unfortunately, we can't find any special highlights in the Samsung notebook's scope of interfaces. Three USB 2.0 ports are available for connecting memory media, i(Asus N71Ja Charger )
nput devices or other peripherals. ( Acer TimelineX 3820TG Charger )However, they may occasionally prove to be a bottleneck due to a transfer speed of just over 30 MB/s. The much faster successor, USB 3.0, is not supported - a big minus point compared to the Dell Vostro 3555, which has three of these ports installed right away.
When required, up to two external monitors can be connected via VGA or HDMI. However, the currently latest transmission standard, DisplayPort, has also been omitted. The list of interfaces is finished o( Acer TimelineX 4820T Charger )
ff with ports for GBit LAN,( Acer TimelineX 4820TG Charger ) headphone/microphone (both 3.5 mm jack) and a 4in1 card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC), which belong to the basic configuration.
With the exception of a few ports, the layout of the single interfaces seems well-considered and sensible. The USB ports are distributed on both sides of the case and very far to the rear on the right. This keeps the user's workspace clear of annoying cables. The LAN and power socket on the other side are placed just as favorably. We would only prefer to see the display ports on the rear - but that is also partly a matter of taste.
The Centrino Wireless N 100 is Intel's cheapest WLAN adapter at the moment. Accordingly, the user is tied to the( Acer Aspire 1830 TimelineX Charger )
2.4 GHz band and the standards, 802.11 b/g/n. ( Acer Aspire 1830T TimelineX Charger )The gross transmission rate also lags behind more expensive models with a maximum of 150 MB/s - more than that is simply not possible in single stream operation (1x1 antenna layout). Bluetooth is also available depending on the configuration. It wasn't installed in our model (300E5A-S01).
A 1.3 megapixel webcam for taking pictures or videos is installed in the display bezel. The matching software, Cyberlink's YouCam, is also preinstalled. The built-in sensor is located in the midfield in terms of quality. Focus and image noise behavior can only be called usable in good lighting conditions.
As typical for Samsung, the microphone is located on the left side of the wrist( Acer Aspire 1830T-3505 TimelineX Charger )

Scope of Delivery
Besides the usual security and warranty information, we also find a quick start guide and a recovery DVD for the preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS. More additions are included in electronic format on the laptop's hard disk. Among them, the practical Samsung tool "Easy Settings" which enables quick access to different system settings such as power management.
Maintenance
Only one screw keeps the maintenance cover closed. It can be opened quickly via a clever sliding mechanism.( Acer Aspire 1830T-4549 TimelineX Charger )
Access to the hard disk and memory hides under the cover. While the data carrier has to be replaced completely for upgrading, the installed memory module can easily be complemented by another one. The CPU technically supports 8 gigabyte DIMMs, but we couldn't verify whether the mainboard and BIOs can manage that in the test.
Warranty
The 24 month manufacturer warranty can be extended at various online dealers. An upgrade to a 3 year onsite service costs around EUR 60; about EUR 100 is due for a total warranty period of 4 years.

Input Devices
Keyboard
Samsung has installed a full-fledged, chiclet style keyboard including a number pad into the 300E5A despite its compact size. It is surrounded by( Acer Aspire 1830T-33U3G32n TimelineX Charger )
a black, high-gloss area. ( Acer Aspire 1830T-33U3G32n TimelineX Charger )We were spared from unwelcome surprises in terms of layout. All keys are placed in their usual position and have a pleasant size (letters: 15 x 15 millimeters).
The subjective typing impression convinces with the first keystroke. Inputs can be made without hitching or jamming up to the borders; the medium-firm pressure point seems well-aligned. We would welcome a somewhat rougher surface as a minor improvement. It would supply a better feedback. A longer key drop (nearly 2 millimeters) would also be advantageous. We can also recommend the notebook for quiet working environments, such as libraries, thanks to the very low stroke noise.
Touchpad
The 10 x 5.5 centimeter touchpad comes from the manufacturer Elan. Like in all newer models, it of course supports multi-touch gestures that are to facilitate scrolling or zooming, among other things. We weren't entirely satisfied with the pad's accuracy. T( Acer Aspire AS1830T-3721 TimelineX Charger )
he mouse cursor( Acer Aspire AS1830T-3927 TimelineX Charger ) partly jerked a bit or followed gestures with a slight lurching. The gliding traits of the finely textured surface are good. Dirt and fingerprints are hardly visible on the silver-gray color.
Two big keys underneath the input field take over the function of left and right clicking. Both have a very crisp pressure point with a high quality impression over their entire length.
Regardless of the fairly good rating, the 300E5A places itself a bit behind the contenders, Vostro 3555 and ThinkPad Edge E525. Wh( Acer Aspire 1830Z TimelineX Charger )

Display
The 300E5A's screen has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels on a diagonal of 15.6 inches. That corresponds to this category's standard resolution and amounts to a pixel density of 100 dpi. At a time where high-end smartphones already can display 1280 x 720 pixels, we would also welcome improvements in this are( Acer Aspire One 721 Charger )
a of the notebook sector.
( Acer Aspire One 721 Charger )Although the high maximum brightness of 268 cd/m2 sounds impressive at first, a look at the illumination is sobering. The screen's luminosity decreases steadily from left to right until not even 200 cd/m2 are reached at the right edge. Although the human eye can only interpret brightness differences logarithmically, this deviation is not only measurable, but also visible. In the end, only an average of 225 cd/m2 is on the record.
The disappointing black value of 1.78 cd/m2 results in a modest contrast ratio of 130:1 - strong evidence for a low-end TN screen (Samsung LTN156AT190). Potential customers won't be comforted by the fact that other manufacturers don't install better screens in this price ran ( Acer Aspire One 721-12B8rr Charger )
Windows Vista Business 32-Bit is pre-installed by default,HP 454931-001which is quite alright with a total capacity of 3 GB RAM. If one should choose to upgrade to more than 4 GB RAM, a 64-Bit operating system is definitely a better choice, since 32-Bit systems can only address up to 4 GB of RAM. The integrated graphics adapter and the operating system already use up quite a large part of those 4 GB, meaning that only a bit more than 3 GB actually remain for the user.HP 455804-001
Additionally, one can downgrade to Windows XP, drivers and tools for that are fortunately available on HP's website.Depending on the country, the 2230s is also partly available with pre-installed FreeDos, at a lower price. One could still install Windows XP or Windows Vista Business later, if one already had a license.HP 460143-001
We were especially excited about SUSE Linux Desktop 10, which should be compatible to this device, as stated by the manufacturer. The installation is carried out via an image for SUSE Linux Desktop 10 SP2, SLED-10-SP2-x86_64-DVD1.iso, downloaded from Novell's homepage. Access to updates is available for 60 days through a requestable activation code (free of charge), a version including a year-long access to updates is available for about 47 Euros. HP 462337-001
No problems came up during the installation at first, but the auto-detect routines do not seem to be too comprehensive, the network devices were not discovered and the included Marvell Yukon card does not appear on the list for manual selection either. Not surprisingly, internet access via wired or wireless LAN was not available right after the installation, we did not try any further due to lack of time.HP EV088AA
In any way, the support for included components is frustrating considering the fact that the operating system is listed as compatible, it is thus not recommendable for Linux beginners. Further attempts with a Linux Life CD (Knoppix 6.0) showed that no WLAN-access is possible without further interventions. In contrast, internet-access over the wired adapter did work immediately.HP EV089AA
All in all the keyboard offers a good feel, featuring a standard layout. The normal keys are about 18mm wide and about 17mm deep, which is sufficient for a mini-notebook. However, this was reached at the expense of other important keys which became smaller in turn, for instance the really smal shift-keys. Additionally, the up-key was placed just to the right of the right shift key, making mistakes while typing probable in the beginning. HP EX940AA
At large, the keyboard's layout appears to be somewhat left-leaning, due to the very small keys at the left edge (especially "^", tab, Caps Lock key, left shift-key, left ctrl-key). Therefore, the right hand will partly be placed on the touch pad when touch typing, due to the relative position of touch pad and keyboard. Fortunately, the touch pad is not too sensitive in terms of "tap-to-click".HP EX941AA
Stroke, feedback and compressive strength of the single keys are without any distinctive feature. HP HSTNN-C17CThe keyboard can become quite noisy when typing aggressively, especially the space bar.Additional keys are featured through touch sensitive areas on a bar above the keyboard. These are used for launching the HP Info Center (Presentation Settings), which is used for starting any user-defined application. It also allows for controlling the wireless module, as well as muting and volume.HP HSTNN-DB31
The touchpad, measuring 72mm in width and 53mm in depth, is quite comfortable for a 12"-device. Its surface's gliding properties are not optimal, but still good. Mechanically seen, it is very precise, the pointer can be brought to any position with ease. Fortunately, there's also a vertical, optically marked area for scrolling, but it is not possible to simply switch off the touch pad via a key or a combination with the fn-key.HP HSTNN-DB32
The touchpad's keys are toggle switches, their stroke, sound and sensitivity is alright once one gets used to press the side facing the user. HP HSTNN-IB31The keys are not really quiet, but not noisy either. There is a finger print reader as well, located on the bottom right corner, its location might not be optimal at times. Depending on one's individual habits, one might happen to accidentally hit the reader, with the palm of the hand, automatically causing the HP ProtectTools Security Manager to start. Moreover, the reader might be calibrated a bit too sensitive: we could not get it to read prints of the same finger, recognized as identical, while trying to register a finger print.HP HSTNN-IB32
As a notebook really suited for professional usage, the HP Compaq 2230s of course features a display with a matt surface. From an ergonomic point of view, it is good that the 12.1" LCD display (Typ:CMO 1232 (N121IA-L01) von Chi Mei Optoelectronics) barely reflects at all, making it suited for permanent professional usage at workstations as well. The WXGA-panel's native resolution is a common 1280x800 pixel. HP HSTNN-IB42
HP Compaq 2230s during outdoor usageThe 16:10 wide-screen LCD- display reached an average value of 187 cd/m² during the measurement of light density, the screen should be somewhat brighter for being able to comfortably work outside. HP HSTNN-LB31
The contrast (using the power supply) reached a value of about 184:1,HP HSTNN-LB42 with a minimal brightness (black value) of 1.12 cd/m² and maximum value of 206 cd/m² for brightness in the screen's center. The HP Compaq 2230s reached a good value of 83% for illumination. This means that the variance of light density (during mains operation) between the brightest (center) and the darkest segment of the display (bottom right corner) amounted to about 17% (170.3 cd/m²). A maximum brightness of only 186.1 cd/m² could be measured while using the battery.HP HSTNN-OB31
While subjectively looking at background pictures of a different brightness, HP HSTNN-OB42one can, depending on the angle of viewing, only find minor formation of shades on the HP Compaq 2230s' display.Measuring the reachable angles of viewing also brought a very good result horizontally, but the optimal angles for viewing and slanting are quite a bit lower vertically. The picture shown is, subjectively seen, sharp and legible, despite the high resolution.HP NBP6A48A1
Despite what the labels on the case and the information on HP's homepage says, HP 462889-121 the HP Compaq 2230s is based on the Centrino 2 platform and does allow for choosing an up-to-date Penryn CPU. The model we tested featured a Penryn Core 2 Duo P7370 CPU (manufactured in 45nm) at 2 GHz. Besides those Core 2 Duo Pxxx processors, which have a low power loss of 25 watt, one can also choose from Core 2 Duo Txxx CPUs, which have a somewhat higher Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 35 watt. HP 462889-421
Therefore, one cannot really criticize the overall performance of the tested HP Compaq 2230s (featuring two DDR2 modules, HP 462890-151 PC2-6400, and a total capacity of 3,096 MB) with Windows Vista Business installed. The system supports a maximum of 8 Gigabyte RAM with the compatible modules, as HP states. The notebook's performance is therefore sufficient for the usual work around the office and the use of such applications. The business-notebook reaches a fairly good performance value of 4181 points in PCMark 05. The integrated chipset graphics adapter (Intel GMA 4500 MHD) is also designed for this range of applications.HP 462890-161
An Intel GMA 4500MHD suffices as an integrated graphics solution for the HP Compaq 2230s,HP 462890-251 its performance is certainly enough for the usual office applications. It is also by far sufficient for presenting Windows Vista's Aero-Glass, but better solutions are available for gaming and displaying more complex 3D-applications. The HP Compaq 2230s reaches a score of only 1487 points in the benchmark 3DMark03, using the Intel driver version 7.15.10.1502. The CB-GFX-value of 510 the 4500MHD reached in a shading-test with Maxon's Cinebench R10 is also reltively low. HP 462890-541
Vista performance indexThere are also some options to choose from in terms of mass storage for the HP Compaq 2230s: Serial-ATA-hard disks with a capacity of 160, HP 462890-751250, or 320 Gigabyte are available, but only at 5400 rpm. Moreover, the HP 3D Drive Guard protects the hard disk from losing data through shocks, at least to a certain degree, since the hard disk is firmly connected to the notebook's frame on the one side. On the other side, a 3D-sensor notices sudden movement, causing the HP Drive guard software to park the hard disk's head in the worst possible case. HP 462890-761
The model we tested featured a 250GB, 5400 rpm Serial-ATA hard disk from Seagate (ST9250827AS), which achieved an average data transfer rate of 49,3 MB/s in HD Tune's hard disk test. A further mass storage device offered by the tested HP Compaq 2230s is an optical drive (TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633L) by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Cooperation.HP 482186-003
The notebooks becomes fairly loud right after switching it on,HP 484170-001 but the system noise evens out to an average of 34.2 dB(A) while idling. Nevertheless, top values of up to 40.9 dB(A) were measured in idle mode.Under work load, this notebook does not become much more noisy with a maximum value of 42.1 dB(A), but this noise level is clearly audible. While the hard disk works fairly quietly at 33.1 dB(A), the optical drive works noisily at 49.5 dB(A) while transfering data, it works a bit more quiet while playing DVDs (38.4 dB(A)).HP 484170-002
The 6-cell battery puts the 531 into a slanted position. Our test sample had to unfortunately give up a large part of its elegance due to the large, protruding 6-cell battery. This also puts the laptop into a slanted position and raises the rear area up from its respective surface. Unfortunately the battery wobbles a bit, which reduces the overall good impression of quality. Toshiba PA3733U-1BRS
In particular the base unit is particularly dimensionally stable and shows no unusual deformations against large amounts of physical pressure. Unfortunately this is not true for the display overall, which gives a little but still performs well on the whole.Toshiba PA3733U-1BAS
Both hinges give a good impression, which keep the panel in position with regulated force. Making adjustments to the opening angle of the display as well as closing the lid is still possible with one hand only.
You should watch out when stowing the netbook away in a bag, as the display has no kind of locking mechanism, which means that objects could slide in between the keyboard and display.Toshiba PA3732U-1BAS
Reducing the height of the base unit towards the front edge of the device requires a precise positioning of individual ports. The ports are, so to speak, placed on the device in positions depending on their height requirements. This is why the front and the front half of the left and right edges remain free of connections. Toshiba PABAS218
In the middle area on the side there are the audio ports as well as a cardreader and USB connections. Both of the "biggest" connections, the VGA port and LAN connection are skilfully put by Acer in the back corner, where both connections are shapely integrated into the overall design. Toshiba PABAS209
The Aspire One doesn't just attract attention with its looks, but also in terms of practical use we were pleased with the scope, quality and position of the ports. The Aspire One 531 offers three USB 2.0 ports overall which is the same as some 17-inch laptops. Also the consistent positioning of possibly permanently occupied ports like the VGA output, the LAN port or the mains adapter is convincing.Toshiba PA3672U-1BARS
Finally the practical test of the VGA port went without criticism. On our test monitor, a Dell 2408wfp the small laptop conjured up a first class and sharp image with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. We're talking about a proud 61 centimetres diagonally compared to the puny 25.5 centimetres on the internal screen.Toshiba PA3732U-1BAS
Acer has meant well with the addition of an SD expansion port to the cardreader. Here SD-cards can be inserted that can be used as additional memory. With the inbuilt 160GB hard drive the need for such a solution is limited.Toshiba PABAS078
Right: audio, 2x USB, mains adapter, LANAcer offers the full range when it comes to communications modules. Whilst LAN 10/100 Mbps and Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g still belong to the mandatory equipment of the laptop, specific models are also equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. In additional there is optional integrated UMTS/HSPA mobile broadband internet, at least according to Acer. Toshiba PA3615U-1BRS
Until now, however, there are no models equipped as such to be found in German-speaking countries of Europe. Experience shows, however, that an integrated broadband modem is likely, adding what we expect to be 100.- Euro to the cost, which would make the price of the Aspire One 531 nearly 500.- Euro. Toshiba PA3615U-1BRM
When it comes to operating system, Windows XP Home is used, which is experiencing a rebirth, so to speak, what with the emergence of the netbook, whilst Vista is dealt a further blow in its not-so-glorious history by being dropped for Windows XP. Due to the low performance requirements Windows XP is still the preferred OS for mini-laptops.Like many other netbooks, the Acer Aspire One 531 only comes with a 12 month guarantee.Toshiba PABAS115
Quite clearly the same keyboard is taken from the Aspire D150 and put into use in Aspire One 531 at hand. Therefore this netbook also gets a keyboard with the full range of inputs, which, when it comes to key size, ranks among the smallest comparable competitor (Asus Eee 1002HA, Samsung NC10).Toshiba PA3591U-1BAS
Certainly after a certain acclimatisation period on the Aspire One 531 extremely fast and error-free text input can be attained. The typing feel is characterised by a particularly small stroke. The quiet background noise even when typing quickly is positively viewed as well as the fact that the keyboard is hardly prone to being bent under pressure.Toshiba PA3591U-1BRS
The multi-touch function of the integrated touchpad is seen as a rather useful feature. This is especially useful for frequently used multimedia functions such as "next, zoom and scroll", which are easy to configure.Toshiba PA3589U-1BRS
The response time of the touchpad is consistently good, however the size of the pad at just 6.5 x 3.5 cm makes extended use unpleasant. Provided you want a central input function with intelligent multi-touch features on your touchpad, you simply don't come around to suitable dimensions for this purpose - compare to the current Apple MacBooks.Toshiba PA3522U-1BRS
The Acer Aspire One 531 uses the typical netboToshiba PA3522U-1BASok display format of 1024x600 pixels (WSVGA). Furthermore LED technology is put into use, which offers comparably better brightness and also low energy consumption compared to CCFL displays.
We can confirm Acer's quote for brightness at 200 nit with the measurements we obtained in the tests. We could observe a maximum brightness in the centre left display quadrants with brightness even reaching 226 cd/m². At 83.8% the panel achieves an acceptable illumination. Toshiba PABAS092
Subjectively the panel offers acceptable colour reproduction with an average brightness of 209 cd/m². In terms of contrast the display admittedly falls behind our expectations with a maximum contrast ratio of 121:1, whilst the reflective display does nothing to help this.Toshiba PA3382U-1BRS
Strong reflections in unfavourable lighting conditionsDue to its good brightness the Acer Aspire One 531 has good conditions for outdoor use. Indeed the reflective display surfaces throw a spanner in the works. As standard for this kind of display, strong reflections often appear, Toshiba PA3382U-1BAS especially in unfavourable and bright lighting conditions, which are mostly to be encountered outdoors, so that you can only see your own reflection in the display. Certainly, these glossy displays also lead to a rapid tiring of the eyes with disturbing reflections indoors, and eyes must constantly "fade out" these overlaying reflections.
Also the display deserves no prizes when it comes to viewing angle stability. In the vertical field of vision at low viewing angles distortions to the image appear rapidly, whilst in the horizontal field you have to primarily fight with reinforced reflections.Toshiba PA3384U-1BAS
There's nothing new to report about the Acer Netbook at hand when it comes to performance. Here, the latest version of the Intel Atom CPU comes into play (N280), which with a clock speed of 1.66 GHz provides solid office performance on Windows XP. Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS
The Intel GMA 950 onboard chip provides the graphical solution, which is likewise consistently sufficient for basic applications. In the 3D Mark 2001 Benchmark test the Acer Aspire One N280 achieves 3215 points, which is actually a best compared to other, similarly equipped netbooks. When it comes to its capacity to play games, it is admittedly no bed of roses.Toshiba PABAS052
3D Mark 2001In principle the power of the Atom N280 CPU 1.66 Ghz and the GMA 950 should be enough to render HD videos. In a practical test with the "Coral-Reef-Adventure" trailer (1080p) we noticed at first extremely strong jittering. A refreshed attempt went clearly more fluidly as the first test, yet it at the while resulted in short judders. A peek at the CPU utilisation, however, showed a constant 57%, which means that other components should be responsible for this drop in performance.Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS
Further tests of practical applications were carried out, for example of music and video playback, surfing the internet, simple word processing and spreadsheet processing, which all ran problem free. It's only the somewhat longer waiting times that you have to deal with when it comes to this device,Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS in comparison with the performance oriented dual-core CPUs that we have all gotten used to.
The hard drive carries authority, in the case of the Acer Aspire One 531 a disk from Toshiba (MK1652GSX) with a capacity of 160GB and a rotational speed of 5400rpm. In the HDTune benchmark test the mass storage device indeed showed good transfer rates of up to 61.8 MB/sec, but admittedly a somewhat longer access time of 18.7 milliseconds.Toshiba PA3399U-2BAS
Acer configures the Aspire One 531 ex factory with 1024MB DDR2 of RAM. There is only one slot for memory modules, meaning that in the case of a future upgrade, the installed 1GB module must be removed. A maximum of 2GB RAM is supported. For basic office applications you should get on with 1GB of RAM on Windows XP. Only by more advanced picture editing and complex applications would a RAM upgrade make sense.Toshiba PABAS174
In modest Office use you can notice that the fans are constantly running. Although this is only noticeable as long as you concentrate on the noise but at just 31.4 dB(A) on our scale the Acer Aspire One 531 remains in an uncritical and unobtrusive range of noise. However, Toshiba PA3782U-1BRSthe hard drive stood out as somewhat unpleasant, which stands out time and time again from the otherwise subtle background sounds with a clearly audible rumble. When idle with maximum power saving settings we could also notice that the fan noises were silent. The fan noises only come about suddenly as soon as minimal load is applied, meaning that as the fan is only quiet for a short time, this aspect is actually not worth mentioning.Toshiba PA3783U-1BRS
Under load the system's fans get faster and with that so too does the noise from the netbook increase. Running demanding programs, the device achieved a noise level of 35.3 dB(A) and the system reached its peak of 41.1 dB(A) using the entire extent of the CPU's and GPU's resources for an extended period of time. In practise this scenario would, however, rarely be seen.Toshiba PA3784U-1BRS
As usual we tested the maximum surface temperatures of the case after several hours of constant load of the hardware. The Acer Aspire One 531 reached somewhat higher temperatures than expected, despite the inclusion of energy efficient components. On the upper side of the base unit a maximum temperature of 38.3 °C can be observed on the left rear area of the keyboard. The maximum temperatures were indeed somewhat higher on the underside of the case. Here the measured peak of a proud 46.8 °C was observed in the area of the fans. Toshiba PA3785U-1BRS
However, the OCZ cannot keep up with 2.5" models with SATA 6G interface. The latter achieves write and read transfer rates of above 300 MB/s and 500 MB/s. Nevertheless, our OCZ model can well compete with other mSata SSDs, e.g. Intel's 310. Despite a lower read performance, it is on a par in write rates. Asus 90-NED1B2100YFurthermore, it is advantageous that it is also available in 120 GB. Due to this convenient size, a further drive is obsolete in subnotebooks. The Nocti has further advantages, like a noiseless operation and a low weight, in common with its mSata competitors.
Picture: OCZAlthough OCZ's Nocti is not today's fastest mSata drive, it still delivers a decent performance. In particular compared to the still wide-spread conventional hard drives, the performance gain is significant in practice. What makes the mSata drive especially appealing is that it combines low weight, small size, and,Asus 90-NWF1B2000Y A32-M50 considering the size, a high capacity of 120 GB. Thus, the Nocti can potentially replace other mass storage devices without limiting the capacity too much. The price of 1.6 Euro/GB is very fair and could be a decisive factor for potential customers.
Beginner's Tablet Guide. The sudden inundation of tablets this year has certainly got at least some readers scratching their heads. In this handy guide, we provide a concise overview of tablet history, its current market trends and even some suggestions for the hottest items this Holiday season.Asus A32-N61
To be honest, we first came up with the idea of writing a primer about the market’s top device segments earlier this year, but by the time we actually got around to working on it, we realized that so much had changed. Some devices were discontinued, others were unveiled and more than one new segment was created. Heck, we even had to give thought to rebranding our website as “ultranetbooktabletcheck.net”, but the domain was a bit too long for our tastes.Asus A32-X64 A33-M50
Now if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by the influx of new devices, then we’re hoping this article will help simplify things a bit. In the upcoming series we take a brief look at the three most dominant categories currently present on the mobile computing market: Tablets,Asus L062066 Netbooks, and Ultraportables. Obviously, regular sized notebooks and even smartphones can now enter the discussion, but for the most part we’re sticking to these three due to their portability and current popularity as non-phone devices.
We start things off by taking a look at what characterizes each of these categories along with a brief history, then move on to their intended markets before rounding things off with some of our own personal recommendations. Of course, we can’t promise that you’ll have your mind made up about your next purchase by the time you’re done reading,Asus L072051 L0790C6 but hopefully it’ll make your choice a tad bit easier. And who knows, by the time you reach the bottom of this page, someone out there may have already introduced a new device and we’ll have to start all over again!
In the English language, a tablet is a flat slab of something that’s intended for inscription, and that definitely applies to modern day tablet computers. Available in a variety of sizes, almost all tablets follow the “slate” design consisting of a front 5”-10” capacitive touchscreen with little to no physical buttons and a thin lightweight body in most cases.Asus 70-NLF1B2000Y In addition, tablets mainly rely on touchscreen input, though some manufacturers may opt to include built-in or detachable keyboards. Overall, the tablet design emphasizes simplicity and portability, and companies compete in offering the thinnest and lightest devices.
Current tablets are powered by a wide range of processors, with the most popular being NVIDIA’s Tegra series, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and ARM’s Cortex A-series of chips. In addition, some tablets may come with high quality IPS (In-Plane-Switching) displays, and even HD resolutions.Asus 70-NLF1B2000ZCamera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, gyroscopes, mini-HDMI ports and at least 8-16GB of Flash storage are found stock on most tablets nowadays, with many manufacturers also releasing 3G equipped versions of their devices.
The original tablet architecture probably traces its roots way back to the days of Apple’s Newton platform, which was introduced in 1993 and then discontinued in 1998. Though it didn’t gain much traction, it paved the way for the next stage in tablet development courtesy of Microsoft and their tablet version of Windows XP. Sadly, the tablet Windows notebooks weren’t very successful, due in part to their high prices and bulkiness in contrast to other notebooks.Asus 70NLF1B2000Y 70NLF1B2000Z
While some might argue that the Portable Media Players (PMPs) of the early 2000’s were the predecessor for the modern day tablet, we tend to entail most of that credit with the late-Steve Jobs instead. Jobs, who was ironically behind the discontinuation of the original Apple Newton,Asus 90-NLF1B2000Y is widely credited with starting the tablet boom after the introduction of the iPad in January 2010. The iPad benefited from hardware advancements that allowed it to be thin and fast, and though it was originally ridiculed due to its similarity to the iPhone, it still managed to post record profits.
After witnessing the success of the iPad, more manufacturers needed in on the market and none other than Google decided to grab a share of the pie. Using their mobile Android OS, the first Google-powered tablets were announced in late 2010 by Archos, Samsung and ViewSonic. The devices were definitely not as popular as the iPad, but due to more recent tablet-oriented software, Android tablets have gained much traction over the past year.Asus 90-NLF1B2000Z 90-NLF1BZ000Y
There have been some other notable entries into the tablet market, mainly by Research in Motion and HP, but neither has been very successful and the tablet market continues to be dominated by Apple and Android.Asus 90-NLF1BZ000Z
Many folks are unable to come to grips with what tablets are actually useful for and some expect them to fall out of flavor in the long run. However, with estimates now indicating that 100 Million tablets will ship by 2012, you can probably bank on them staying for a while.Asus 90-NVD1B1000Y 90NLF1B2000Y
One of the biggest pluses that tablets have to offer is that almost anybody can find at least some use for it due to the almost endless amount of applications. Almost any app you can think of probably exists out there in some shape or form, and neat touchscreen and gyroscopic controls make these apps a pleasure to use.Asus 90NLF1B2000Z As such, kids can get their gaming fix from tablets, adults can surf the web and watch movies on the go, employees can have more diverse ways of getting their work done, and students can benefit from reading electronic textbooks or studying using interactive apps.
In a recent survey conducted by Google’s AdMob, it was revealed that most tablet owners mainly use their tablets for gaming, followed by searching for info and emailing. Furthermore, 43% of respondents stated that they spend more time on their tablet than on a desktop or TV, and 68% reported spending more than 1 hour on their tablet per day.Asus 90NLF1BZ000Y 90NLF1BZ000Z
Results of a recent survey by AdMob, in which 1,430 tablet owners were asked about their tablet usageWhile all the preceding activities can also be done from a normal PC, tablets are comparatively a lot lighter and thinner than most notebooks and almost all desktops. Asus A32-F52Their extended battery life and 3G capabilities allow for far more portability than usual laptops as well. In any case, most tablet manufacturers market them as secondary rather than primary computing devices, leading to a higher chance of co-existence with personal PCs. And of course, the touchscreens allow for easier use in certain applications, and further advances will only increase the sensitivity and give way for more intuitive ways of user interfacing.
As we mentioned earlier, Apple’s iPad was arguably the first official tablet released and it enjoyed a near monopoly on the market for a little less than a year. However, with the introduction of Google’s more tablet-oriented Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating systems, more and more users are making the jump over to the Android atmosphere. Asus A32-F82 L0690L6While Apple and the iPad will always have a gargantuan following, the iPad remains slightly limited due to its single shape and size (as of Q4 2011), along with a lack of customizability. On the other hand, Android tablets come in many different forms, so much so that some customers may have difficulty choosing; especially since popular manufacturers such as Sony, ASUS, Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon and even Barnes & Noble all produce Android tablets. Asus L0A2016
Ultimately, the success of a tablet may not rest upon its hardware specifications or design, but rather on software ease of use and application availability. With regards to usability, Apple probably has the slight edge, as Apple’s OS is generally more friendly and fluid and many users are already accustomed to iOS from experiencing the iPhone or iPod Touch. In contrast, Asus 70-OA111B1000Google’s latest Honeycomb and ICS OS’s emphasize easier user access, but the custom UIs that are sometimes added by manufacturers (e.g., HTC Sense, Motorola Motoblur, and Samsung TouchWiz) may not be to everyone’s liking.
Unfortunately for Google, Android doesn’t fare much better when it comes to apps as Apple’s App Store reigns supreme in terms of both application numbers and general quality. As of 2011, Android has a bit over 350,000 apps in their market (with 33% of them being classified as low quality according to AppBrain),Asus 70-OA1G1B1000while Apple’s App Store crossed the 500k mark back in May of this year. On the other hand, Android does have approximately 10,000 more free applications than iOS, but keep in mind that most analysts tend to view them as lower quality compared to iOS apps.
The differences between the two rivals become clearer when you take a look at the amount of tablets moved, as Apple managed to sell 9.25 Million iPads during Q3 of 2011 while only 1.2 Million Android tablets were sold in all of 2011. This clearly shows that Apple still holds the lion’s share of the market, but that could very well change as Microsoft’s upcoming tablet-optimized Windows 8 platform could tilt the landscape.Asus 70-OA1G1B1100 AP21-MK90
Of course, the iOS vs. Android debate is probably too big to be settled in this article alone, but Apple and the iPad appear to be winning due to build and app quality along with ease of use. Nonetheless, Android tablets do have their own following, and their lower price tags and more choices make them an appealing option to budget-strapped consumers or for those looking for something a little bit different.Asus AP21-T91
Part III - Notebookcheck Recommendations
With the ever increasing number of tablets out there, we know it can be hard to make a decision on what to buy. After looking at various categories, including pricing, hardware, software and design, we can safely recommend the following devices:Asus AP23-T91
At just .34 inches (8.8mm) thick, the iPad 2 is 35% thinner than the original iPad and comes with a 9.7” IPS display, a 1GHz Cortex A5 CPU, 512MB of RAM and is available in 16, 32 and 64GB sizes with Wi-Fi or 3G. You can read our full review here, but the iPad 2 definitely tops our tablet list thanks to its lightweight design and the number of apps available. As such, until Apple announces their iPad 3, we can whole-heartedly recommend the current iPad for those in search of a tablet.Asus 15G10N381200
Possibly the most popular Android tablet out there, the Transformer introduced a new concept by adding a detachable keyboard that doubles as both a docking station and an extra battery. In addition, the Transformer comes with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 10.1” IPS display,Asus 15G10N381200CM-2 micro-SD reader and is available in 16GB/32GB models, but with no 3G option. Our comprehensive review can be found here, and we definitely like the Transformer from the available Android tablets, especially since it is cheaper than much of the competition.
Price: $399 for the 16GB model, $499 for the 32GB model; however, the keyboard dock tacks on another $100. We expect price drops across the board once the Transformer Prime releases before the end of the year in the U.S.
Though ASUS has yet to release their next-gen tablet, it managed a spot on our list thanks to its tantalizing specs. The 8.3mm thick tablet, which comes in 32GB and 64GB flavors, is upgradeable to Android 4.0 ICS and should be the first NVIDIA Tegra 3 tablet to hit the market. In addition, its mobile dock can apparently extend battery life by up to an astonishing 18 hours. ASUS has currently begun accepting pre-orders for UK customers, with the US launch set for December 19th.Asus A34-M90
Next in line on the Android circuit is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which comes in 10.1”, 8.9”, 7.7” and 7” models. Thus, the Galaxy Tab has the full spectrum covered due to its various screen sizes with Wi-Fi/3G options and even 4G on select Tab models (7.7, 8.9 and 10.1). Samsung’s tablets also feature the custom UI TouchWiz,Asus A34-W90 L0690L6 which adds certain widgets and easy-access menus. Furthermore, the Tab is about the same thickness as the iPad 2, and all the devices come with Samsung’s signature AMOLED displays. It’s a tough choice between the Transformer and Galaxy Tabs, but if you have no interest in the docking station then the Tab may be the way to go.Asus NBP12A100
One of the newer devices to hit the market, the Kindle Fire only comes with a dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4 CPU, no cameras, 512MB of RAM and only 8GB of SSD storage. However, the Fire benefits immensely from its integration with Amazon’s services and its sub-$200 price tag. The tablet also comes with a 7” IPS display and only weighs 14.6 oz (413 grams), but doesn’t offer as much “punch” as the other Android tablets.Asus A32-W7
The 15.6 inch screen comes from Samsung and is called 156AT05-T02. Dell 0XD184It has the rather low resolution of 1366x768 pixels and is also reflective. Thus, the specifications won't bring any surprises. The brightness on the lower edge is still impressive with 220 cd/m2. But it decreases to 185 cd/m2 upwards and to the sides. Consequently, the brightness is distributed acceptably with 84%. The average brightness of 206 cd/m2 is the least that can be expected of a screen.Dell PU556
The screen still allows a brightness of 1.16 cd/m2 to pass through when it's black. This results in a moderate contrast of 182:1. That and the screen's poor brightness result in matt and faded colors that can't be improved by the smooth screen surface, either. This isn't noticed particularly adversely when typing, but it can really ruin the fun of watching movies or slide shows.Dell WR053
The consumer screen from Samsung doesn't come close to covering professional color spectrums. It fails in sRGB as well as the even more demanding AdobeRGB. But that is only of interest for graphic designers and photographers and shouldn't be that important for most users.Dell 312-0567
Toshiba Satellite L750 vs. AdobeRGBThe screen partly can't display all content satisfactory in very bright rooms or outdoors in daylight. Working with the notebook gets very difficult because of the moderate brightness and the reflective surface. The notebook can hardly be used in bright sunlight.Dell 0WR053
Viewing angles: Toshiba Satellite L750-16W The Samsung screen also quickly proves to be a low-cost consumer display looking at the viewing angles. While the colors can still be seen horizontally, they fade extremely when looking down on the screen. When looking up, it dims intensely and the colors invert tremendously. Dell PU563
The Toshiba Satellite L750/755 is available in many various configurations. Processor options range from the entry level Intel Core i3 2330M, the midrange processors Core i5 2410M and 2430M, up to the high performance Intel Core i7 2670QM. Intel's integrated HD Graphics 3000 or Nvidia's entry level graphics cards, GeForce GT 520M or the GeForce GT 525M can be selected as the graphics solution. Moreover, Toshiba advertises a Blu-Ray drive on its homepage that isn't available in any model of the range until now.Dell 312-0543
An Intel Core i5 2430M and an Nvidia GeForce GT 525M is installed in our Satellite L750-16W. Regrettably, Toshiba doesn't implement Nvidia's Optimus Technology, which activates the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated in the processor during undemanding graphic tasks and thus saves energy. Therefore, the HD Graphics is permanently disabled while the GeForce GT 525M has to calculate even the most basic tasks and unfortunately increases the power consumption a bit. More about that in Battery Life.Dell 312-0584
The memory solutions are designed generously. The hard disk has an unformatted memory capacity of 750 GB and rotates with a faster 7200 revolutions per minute. The main memory is a fast 8 GB DDR3 RAM which clocks with fast 1333 MHz in Dual Channel Mode. Dell 451-10516
The selected processor, Intel Core i5 2430M, is located in the upper midrange. It has a default clock of 2.4 GHz and can reduce the clock to 800 MHz in idle. It's most important feature is Turbo Boost 2.0. It enables the processor to overclock up to 3 GHz when high performance is required and gives it a significant performance advantage.Dell FT080
Cinebench R11.5 assesses the CPU's performance by rendering a 3D scene. There aren't any surprises here. The Satellite achieves the same score as other, similar notebooks with an Intel Core i5 2430M, for example the Samsung Series 7 700Z5A, which however has a much stronger graphics card. The full capacity isn't available on battery power. The Satellite only manages 2.42 points rather than 2.66 points without an external power source in Cinebench R11.5.Dell FT092
PCMark from Futuremark calculates an index for each demand made on the computer and then combines them to a total score. It provides information on the performance of the entire system. The notebook unexpectedly scores a lot worse than expected here. Despite the strong single components, the Satellite L750 is clearly inferior to the Dell Inspiron 14z that has the same processor, but a weaker hard disk and no dedicated graphics card.Dell KX117
Dell's Inspiron doesn't apply the maximum clock of 2.8 GHz, but it runs stably with 2.6-2.7 GHz. The Satellite is defeated here. Although the feared throttling doesn't occur at first, the clock partly drops below the default clock of 2.4 GHz. This poor processor performance also has an impact on the rating of the overall system.Dell NR433

Toshiba relies on an own creation for the hard disk. The installed mass memory is called MK7575GSX and can store a data capacity of 750 GB. The magnetic disk rotates with 7200 revolutions per minute, which consequently results in a faster HDD performance. The average transfer rate of 80 MB/s is impressive, although current SSDs have a considerably higher performance and a much lower access rate. Dell 312-0427
The built-in Nvidia GeForce GT 525M is located in the upper entry-level field. It manages approximately twice as many points as the integrated solution, Intel HD Graphics 3000, and is clearly below the performance of the popular GeForce GT 540M in 3DMark Vantage. More comparisons can be made in our graphics card benchmark chart.Dell 312-0428
The Toshiba L750 is always at the lower end of comparably equipped notebooks in the 3D benchmark tests that we executed. The device apparently can't exploit the maximum of the installed hardware here, either.
The graphics card is only suitable for playing current computer games with low requirements.Dell 312-0461 In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the resolution and other features have to be set to the lowest level so that the game runs just smoothly. The first person shooter isn't much fun to play in medium settings. Although the average refresh rate is 27 frames per second, the rate dropped to a very jerky 7 fps in an underwater scene. Then again, DIRT 3 could still be played well even in medium settings. Fans of the latest games should nevertheless turn to at least a GT 540M graphics solution.Dell 451-10339
The Toshiba Satellite L750 isn't really annoying in idle, but it's audible with a permanent hum. The hard disk remains pleasantly quiet despite its fast speeds and doesn't drown out the fan's noises. The optical drive can come to the fore when running, but it's not yet unduly annoying. The fan gets clearly audible during load, but the noise development is still within an acceptable range.Dell PD942
The notebook stays very cool in idle. The notebook doesn't heat up noticeably anywhere with a maximum of 28°C. Thus, it's possible to work comfortably with the notebook on the lap. The Satellite selectively heats up significantly during load and reaches a very warm 42°C on the bottom. The notebook's temperature doesn't increase at all in other places and remains below 30°C. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be used on the lap together with demanding tasks.Dell PD945
The processor and graphics card are loaded to full capacity for at least an hour in the stress test. This allows us to see how the notebook deals with very high load and if the Intel Core i5 manages to overclock to 3 GHz.Dell PD946
Regrettably, the Toshiba Satellite is disappointing in this situation. After starting FurMark and Prime95, the processor's clock rate nosedives from 2.8 GHz to very slow 800 MHz within a few seconds. The Satellite only manages very poor 0.75 points rather than 2.66 points in Cinebench R11.5. This phenomenon is called throttling and is a software-related limitation of the CPU rate during high power consumption. Dell RD850
It is to prevent the notebook from getting too hot, or over-exploiting the power capacity. The first can be excluded because neither the CPU nor the GPU exceed a temperature of 70°C. This is very low for a loaded chip. Thus, the ill has to be looked for in the insufficient power supply (75W power adapter). Dell RD857
After throttling sets in, the laptop has to be rebooted so that the full power is available again. When only the CPU is loaded, for example by Prime95, the notebook can process stably with 2.8 GHz. The same applies when only the GPU is loaded. This problem only turns up when both units run on full capacity and should therefore not often be an issue during practical use.Dell RD859
Consumer notebook speakers are often sported massively and not every sticker keeps its promise. The Japanese manufacturer, Onkyo, is responsible for these speakers.
Unfortunately, as so often the case in laptops, there is absolutely no bass. In return, the trebles and mids sound all the better. The good sound is surprising. The Satellite doesn't distort the usually critical high pitches even in high volume.Dell TD344
The power consumption isn't the notebook's biggest strength. Since the Optimus Technology hasn't been enabled by the manufacturer, the Nvidia graphics card also works in idle. Dell TD347As a result the idle rate of 12 watts is rather high despite an energy efficient processor. Notebooks with Optimus manage a power consumption of less than 8 watts in idle. The notebook even consumes power like "a big one" during load. The Satellite L750 could be mistaken for a basic gaming notebook in view of 78 watts. This energy hunger is inappropriate in relation to the available performance.Dell TD349
A 48 Wh lithium ion battery is used in the Satellite L750. The laptop manages a runtime of good four and a half hours with that. This battery life can only be achieved with disabled network adapters, the lowest screen brightness level and a basic text, such as displaying a text document.Dell UD260
Our WLAN surf test, where we simulate surfing on websites in medium brightness, is a lot more realistic. The notebook lasts for 220 minutes, which should be enough for most users.Dell UD264
The Satellite only lasts for 127 minutes when playing a DVD in maximum display brightness. This is enough for a 90 minute children's movie, but it gets quite tight when watching a longer movie, such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, with a runtime of only 125 minutes.Dell UD265
Of all the iPad cases we've tested recently,Acer UM08A73 Kensington's is the most like a notebook's, as it has dedicated Pause/Break and Printscreen buttons in the function row. We're not sure how necessary they are, though. Better to have more iPad-centric keys, such as cut and paste. We do like the Kensington includes a .com key, which is thoughtful, but it's at the expense of the right Shift key, which is shrunken too much. The Keyfolio Pro is rated for 90 hours of battery life, the same as the ClamCase, and about 30 hours longer than the Belkin Keyboard Folio.Acer UM08A74
If you're in the market for an iPad keyboard case that lets you work in landscape or portrait mode, the $99 Kensington Keyfolio Pro is the one to get. Not only is it attractive, but it's highly functional, too. A few minor tweaks would make it even better, overall this accessory is a very good choice.Acer UM08B71
Kensington has been in the iPad accessory game for a while, and it shows. The $99 Keyfolio Pro is not only an attractive iPad 2 keyboard case, but it's well thought out also. This case lets you rotate your iPad into landscape or portrait mode, and provides a comfortable keyboard for typing.Acer UM08B72
ReviewSpecifications. For those who find 9- and 10-inch slates too large to carry everywhere, 7-inch tablets provide greater portability and easier one-handed use. With competitors such as Acer, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Lenovo, and Samsung making 7-inch devices, Toshiba is entering an already crowded market with its new slate. However the new Thrive 7-inch brings some compelling favors to the party, including a high-resolution 1280 x 800 screen and an attractive design. But is this Tegra 2-toting tablet worth its relatively high $379 price?Acer UM08B73
Click to EnlargeOne of the most stylish tablets with this size display, the Thrive 7-inch shares the same aesthetic as its bigger brother, the 10-inch Toshiba Thrive. It has a luxurious rubberized back with a textured ridge surface that's easy to grip. Classy chrome rings the front and rear cameras. As on the elder Thrive, the cameras sit on the short side of the device, making it a little too easy to cover the back-facing lens with your thumb when filming with the device in landscape mode.Acer UM08B74
While the 10-inch Toshiba Thrive was one of the bulkiest tablets on the market, its 7-inch brother is one of the lightest, making it well suited for one hand use. At 7.4 x 5. x 0.5 inches and 13.3 ounces, the 7-inch Thrive is thicker and heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (12.2 ounces, 7.6 x 4 x 0.4 inches). However, it's lighter than the Acer Iconia Tab A100 (14.7 ounces, 4.6 x 7.7 x 0.5 inches), the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (14.2 ounces, 8 x 5 x 0.48 inches), and the Kindle Fire (14.6 ounces, 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.5 inches).Acer ZG5
Click to EnlargeOn the Thrive 7-inch's left long side sit a volume rocker, power button, and orientation lock switch, along with a rubber port cover that hides the mircoUSB, microSD card reader, and microHDMI out ports. A 3.5mm headphone jack is located on the tablet's short side top, with a proprietary docking station on the bottom.Acer AS07B71
Extremely rare among tablets, the Thrive 7-inch can charge when the docking cable is connected to a PC's USB port, though it also comes with an AC adapter that lets it juice from an outlet. However, if you want to copy files from a PC, you must connect using the microUSB port rather than the docking cable.acer al10a13
Click to EnlargeThe Thrive 7-inch's bright, colorful screen is the sharpest you'll find on a 7-inch slate, thanks to its 1280 x 800 resolution. Most 7-inchers provide only 1024 x 600. That gives the Thrive an impressive pixel density of 215.63 PPI, much higher than other 7-inch tablets' density of 169.55 PPI or 10.1-inchers' density of 149.45 PPI. This higher density means much sharper images when you're surfing the web, gaming, or playing videos.acer al10a31
When we streamed an HD trailer for The Avengers, images were extremely sharp and colors such as the blue in Captain America's costume and red in Thor's cape really popped. Colors remained vibrant even at 180-degree viewing angles and with the screen titled way back. At full brightness, the Thrive's screen measured an impressive 355 lux on our light meter. Both the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet have brighter displays--460 and 392 lux respectively--but neither has a screen that's as sharp as the Thrive's.acer al10b31
When we played the jet-skiing game Riptide, objects such as the jet ski and our character's helmet were much crisper than they were on the 10.1-inch Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Even when we read news articles on Cnn.com and NYTimes.com, text seemed crisper than on other tablets we've used.acer al10bw
The stereo speakers on the Thrive 7-inch produced reasonably accurate sound that's loud enough to hear across a small room, though the audio was a bit flat. When we streamed Patrice Rushen's bass-heavy "Forget Me Nots" from Rhapsody and Alice Cooper's "School's Out" from Slacker, the music was accurate and free of distortion and tininess. However, because the speakers are mounted on the left short side, it's easy to accidentally cover them when holding the Thrive in landscape mode.acer al10g31
Click to EnlargeWhen positioned in landscape mode, the Thrive 7-inch's screen is the ideal size for effective thumb-typing, as each hand can reach toward the middle of the keyboard with great ease. By default, the Thrive 7-inch is set to use Android 3.2's stock keyboard, but Swype is also available. Many users will prefer Swype's method of forming letters by tracing lines between keys, but we were annoyed by its inability to deal with new words as it kept autocompleting to "scream" when we tried to trace "Avram."acer bt.00603.121
Though it is disabled by default, the Thrive 7-inch supports haptic feedback on either of its keyboards to provide tactile feedback as you type. With haptic feedback enabled on the stock keyboard, the Thrive 7-inch provided one of the most comfortable and accurate typing experiences we've had on an Android tablet.Acer LC.BTP00.008
Click to EnlargeApart from setting the default wallpaper to an attractive red-and-black abstract pattern, Toshiba has made no changes to Google's Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system. Users unfamiliar with Honeycomb will appreciate its power and flexibility, but the software has a steeper learning curve compared to iOS for the iPad.Acer LC.BTP00.014
The Honeycomb OS has five customizable home screens for displaying widgets and shortcuts to your favorite apps. The lower left-hand corner of the screen contains virtual Back,Home, and Layers buttons, the latter of which shows thumbnails for each open application to make task-switching easy. Notifications appear along the bottom right, next to the time and battery icons. Tapping the battery icon also brings up a quick notifications/settings list, which lets you adjust the brightness and change the wireless without leaving your current app.Acer BATCL50L
All Honeycomb tablets come with a number of Google applications that are designed to take advantage of the large screen. Both the email (POP, IMAP, Exchange) and Gmail clients have two panes, one for viewing the contents of your inbox and another for reading the current message. The stock Honeycomb browser supports multiple tabs to make switching between different sites easy. The Thrive 7-inch comes pre-loaded with Google's Android Market, which provides access to more than 300,000 apps. (Only about 5,000 of these have been specially optimized for tablets.)Acer BATCL50L4
With its dual-core 1-GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU and 1GB of RAM, the Thrive 7-inch packs plenty of power. In our testing, the tablet was more than capable of delivering eye-popping graphics on intense 3D games such as Need for Speed Shift and Riptide GP. Playing high-quality videos, surfing the web, and taking pictures were also no problem. Like all Android tablets we've tested, the Thrive 7-inch suffered from occasional moments of lag when we tried to move from one task to another too quickly, but these moments were fewer than on most other tablets we've used.Acer UM09G31
The Thrive 7-inch performed well on all the synthetic benchmarks we threw at it. On the Benchmark CPU test, it scored a strong 3,008, well above the tablet category average of 2,680 and about on par with the Tegra 2-powered Acer Iconia Tab A100's score of 3018. The Toshiba was just a tiny bit behind the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (3,056) and the Amazon Kindle Fire (3,069), both of which use 1-GHz TI OMAP 4 processors. The 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos powered Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus scored a much higher 3,353.Acer UM09G41
The Thrive 7-inch scored a respectable 7,635 on An3DBench, which measures graphics prowess, far better than the 7,156 tablet category average, the 7,006 provided by the Kindle Fire, and the 7,120 offered by the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus turned in a higher 7,899, and the Acer Iconia Tab A100 scored 8,081. However, both of those tablets have lower-resolution screens than the Thrive 7-inch.Acer UM09G51
The Toshiba Thrive 7-inch lasted a mediocre time of 5 hours and 18 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 40-percent brightness. That time is well behind the tablet category average of 6 hours and 42 minutes, the Kindle Fire's time of 7:34, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus' time of 7:18.Acer UM09H31

The wrist rest,Dell K899K single areas on the bottom and the display lid can be dented with little force. This does not diminish the quality because Toshiba ensures a very good torsional stiffness of the base unit due to an inner reinforcement. The case is even supposed to survive a drop test from a height of 76 cm on a steel plate (on its sides). The manufacturer let the Technical Control Board execute this test in addition to a pressure test (100 kg surface), which the Z830 passed. In an analogy to the plastic apron for cars, it can be said: It's probably just the slightly yielding chassis that makes the Z830 resistant.Dell P769K
The almost wafer-thin lid warps very easily and looks more like a piece of cardboard. The hinges fit tight on the case and let the lid stop softly at about 135 degrees. The hinges could use a bit more traction, though. The lid closes on its own when the device is shaken.Dell 312-0748
The lid has a narrow rubber lip at its upper edge that lies on the case when it's closed. The small gap that needs a fingernail to be opened is impractical in hectic situations. The device's bottom is absolutely even and there is no maintenance opening. The RAM (2 GB built-in, 2 GB inserted) can be upgraded. The entire bottom can be removed for this.Dell KY477
The seemingly well thought-out ports make the Z830 more practical than for example an Asus UX31. While, in the Asus, micro HDMI and mini VGA require an adapter and no Ethernet port is installed, the Z830 has these ports in full size. The trick to avoid making the chassis thicker: VGA and Ethernet are located above the rear feet.Dell 312-0383
It's practical that the majority of ports are located at the rear. The desk remains free of a visible cable mess, with exception of audio and USB 3.0. Only the Acer Aspire S3-951 has ports on the rear, but VGA and LAN have been completely omitted. Those looking for a docking port should remember that this is a Satellite. We are dealing with the consumer range. It's doubtful if the Portégé ultrabook will have such a port: The identically built Portégé Z830, available in the USA, also lacks a docking port (but has vPro and TPM module, i7 2677M). Dell 312-0386
WLAN in the latest n-standard belongs to the basic configuration meanwhile. A 3G module with built-in SIM slot would have been very suitable for the claim on mobility. But Toshiba unfortunately doesn't have such a version in its range. We will have to wait for a Portégé ultrabook. The Portégé Z830 versions available in the USA don't have this feature. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything for the (future) German models. Dell 451-10297
Toshiba installs a set of tools and software on the hard disk. When looking closer, we find a few useful tools, such as Nero 10 Essentials (burn data carriers, manage multimedia files), Office Starter (Word + Excel), Recovery Media Creator or Eco Utility. The latter enables energy settings, preset by the manufacturer. Cheating isn't allowed for real energy savers and ecologists: The Eco mode settings may not be altered.Dell 451-10298
An Intel core processor and a WLAN module of the same manufacturer provide Wireless Display: If a TV with this feature is within reach, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 can transmit the colorful pixels to it. There are many USB ports for recharging the smartphone or iPod when the notebook is turned off. Toshiba however adds a tool which allows an exact setting of this function (minimum charge state).Dell JD634
A 1.3 MP webcam isn't anything special at first. The picture quality is also limited, at least in poor light conditions. The picture shows noise and is a bit unfocused. However, we liked the simple user interface without the colorful gimmicks of a CyberLink YouCam. Dell PC764
The laptop comes with a 24 month warranty. An onsite pick-up service is available in Germany and Austria, when the repair is registered via the Toshiba hotline. A warranty extension up to three years including a pick-up service costs about 65€.Dell TC030
Toshiba equips its Z830 with free-standing keys that are in a recess.TD175 It is exactly the same keyboard as in the sister model, Portégé R830-110 in terms of layout and lettering. The keys have a firm stroke. Their smooth surface is pleasant to use and doesn't leave any greasy fingerprints behind. The large key gap enables accurate typing, whereby the typing feedback seems too short. The reason is the low key drop. The keys also don't have a concave indentation (inward) and the marks for touch-typists on F and J are difficult to discern.Dell 0XR693
The layout is good. The arrow keys are separated, the "PG" keys as well as "DEL" and "Home/End" are sensibly located at the very right; "Caps Lock" lights up when active. Our focus turns to the keys' backlight at the keyword "light". It facilitates typing in the dark or during a blackout in the office. Dell 312-0625
In a video, the manufacturer shows how 100 ml coffee is poured over the keys of the Z830 in a spill test. The device remains in working order, although the liquid isn't drained. Therefore, coffee lovers should always drink one half of their brew before pouring the rest over the keys. A big cup of coffee has a capacity of at least 150 ml.Dell 312-0633
The multitouch pad (Synaptics v7.5) has a horizontal and vertical scroll bar, which isn't marked visibly. The newest pad driver version includes three-finger pressure support. This gesture can be mapped with an application that is then opened. The glossy keys have a short drop. Their high-pitched click noise isn't annoying, but the keys are stiff. Fast clicking becomes tedious due to that. Dell 312-0763
The non-glare 13.3 inch screen (model can't be read out) doesn't live up to the ultra claim. We are dealing with a standard resolution of 1366x768 pixels, which won't impress demanding users. However, it is adequate for the consumer range. The good average brightness of 260 cd/m2 is praiseworthy.Dell GW240
The weak contrast of 136:1 lets colors, as a consequence of the matt screen surface, look rather pale and dull. A black background doesn't look deep black, but has a gray cast. This is acceptable for office or outdoor use. However, users who have a high demand on screens and are looking for a wide color spectrum will be disappointed. sRGB is clearly failed (center picture). A business laptop, such as the Sony Vaio SE1Z9EB, is superior here, even if sRGB isn't covered by the Vaio screen.Dell HP297
ICC Toshiba Sat. Z830-10J vs. Vaio SE1Z9EB FHD(t)The advantage of the Z830 Panel is its good brightness that doesn't dim on battery power, and which is fundamental for working in daylight. We measure the brightest spot on the outer left with 278 cd/m2. This and the anti-reflective coating are very beneficial for mobile users.Dell XR693
Viewing angles: Toshiba Satellite Z830-10J In the following video, we see the Z830 in various viewing angles. Dell J658NWe'd like to depict what the image looks like from different positions. Simple TN screens, as built into the majority of notebooks as well as the Z830, only bid tight viewing angles of about 45 degrees horizontally. So-called ghosting turns up at wider angles, which will be familiar to everyone who looks at pictures or movies on a laptop. Narrow viewing angles are also the case in the Z830. We have to reckon with even stronger restrictions vertically. A deviation of only a few degrees up or downward distort the colors and the brightness decreases. We already notice ghosting at 10 degrees.Dell 451-11258
The Intel Core i5 2467M (default: 1.60 GHz, Turbo up to 2.30 GHz) is an energy efficient, ultra low voltage dual core processor from the 2011 Intel Core generation (Sandy Bridge). It is currently the only available CPU alternative for the Z830 in Germany. The identical Portégé Z830 is sold with an i7 2677M or even i3 2367M processor in the USA. The former is installed in the Asus Zenbook UX21E, an 11.6 inch device. Dell MT3HJ
The RAM has the usual capacity of 4 GB (DDR3). Dell 0D839NTwo gigabytes are soldered to the mainboard (on board), and two are inserted. The Intel HD Graphics 3000 is integrated on the CPU (shared memory). The Z830's actual acceleration during work is provided by its 128 GB mSATA 300 SSD from Toshiba (Toshiba SG2 Series, 32 nm, THNSNB128GMCJ). The price in (very rare) retail: 260€. The slim case doesn't accommodate a 2.5 or 1.8 inch disk, but a module with a size of 3x6 centimeters instead.Dell 312-0928
The (1.6 GHz) Core i5 2467M's TDP is 17 watts (35 and 45 watts are usual for laptops). In contrast to the Intel Core i7 2620M (dual core, 35 watts) frequently used in 13 inch devices lately, the TDP is a lot lower. However, the standard clock is also comparatively low. But just how much slower does the low voltage i5 calculate in comparison to a 2620M, as it's for example built into a Vaio SA2Z9E (13.3 inch)?Dell 312-0929
The processor test, Cinebench R11.5 (64 bit, multi core processing) rewards the Z830 with 1.91 points. This result is duplicated in all repetitions as well as on battery power (3 runs each). The 2620M manages 3.03 points and the i7 2677M, in the UX21E, 2.13 points. Our ultrabook with a Core i5 CPU is thus only a bit below the processing speed of a Core i7 ULV processor. However, it can only just keep up with the Core i3 2330M (2.1 points) among normal laptop processors. Dell D837N
Turbo 2.0 does its job without complaint. That isn't a matter of course in a slim case. The clock during the Cinebench multi core test was 2.1 GHz. The clock drops to (stable) 2.0 GHz at most when Prime95 simulates high load on all cores. This is within the Turbo range and is well above the standard clock of 1.6 GHz. Short: Turbo 2.0 works perfectly in our CPU benchmarks.Dell H018N
Nvidias Optimus technology does not have this problem as it always uses the frame buffer of the Intel HD and automatically selects the correct GPU for any given circumstance. The aim of hybrid graphics is to reduce the power consumption and lengthen life.battery for Toshiba PA3733U-1BRS
Standard core i3-CPU and hybrid graphicsSo how fast does the Core i3-350M calculate compared to real, battery for Acer 934T2039F and expensive low voltage processors? In order to analyze this we used the Cinebench R10 Single benchmark test (32bit). When using only one of the four threads the system manages to score 2.459 points. Subnotebooks with a i7-640LM (HP EliteBook 2540p; Lenovo Thinkpad X201s 5143-4JG), can achieve 2.980 or even 3.127 points. The 350M therefore gives way to the greater performance of the up-market i7-640LM. The consumer level, low voltage i5-520UM (with turbo boost), only manages 1.957 points, or 2.549 points with over-clocking (Asus PL30JT-RO030X, Asus UL30JT-RX014V-4).battery for Apple A1039
So what is the performance like with multiple cores? We tested this using the Cinebench R10 Multi-CPU Test (32bit). Our test unit managed to award itself with 5.723 points.Toshiba PA3733U-1BASThis means that the i3-350M is significantly better than the i5-520UM (3.368 points, Acer Aspire 1830T). When over-clocked (Asus PL30JT, Asus UL30JT), the 520UM can achieve 5.225 points as well however. The 350M can not compete with the i7-640LM however, which can achieve a higher score using just one core (6.043 or 5.869 points). laptop battery for Toshiba PA3732U-1BAS

In the system tests, the standard core Core i3-CPU in the Travelmate 8372TG seems to provide greater performance than the consumer low voltage i5-520UM. Will this hold true for the applications as well?Toshiba PABAS209
The PCMark Vantage gave it 5.190 points. This score is higher than that achieved by the over-clocked i5-520UM (Asus PL30JT-RO030X, 4.536 points). When not over-clocked the 520UM only achieves 3.950 points (Acer Aspire 1830T-52U4G32n). Even the fastest Core 2 Duo SP9400 systems (Dell Latitude E4300, 7.200 rpm HDD), from the previous low voltage generations are beaten with only 3.732 points. Toshiba PA3672U-1BARS
Strong low voltage units such as the i7-640LM we mentioned earlier can provide more get up and go. This includes the Lenovo Thinkpad X201s 5143-4JG which has 5.869 and the HP EliteBook 2540p (12"), with 6.043 points respectively. laptop battery for Toshiba PA3732U-1BAS
The Travelmate 8372TG provides a level of performance which is typical for a Core i3-System. Acer did not put any performance restrictions in place in order to increase life. I3 units, such as the Asus K72JK-TY001V (HD 5145), achieved similar PCMark scores 5.296 PCMarks. We should note however, that the score of the PCMark Vantage is also dependent on the HDD, GPU and memory. Toshiba PABAS078
The Western Digital hard drive (type WD6400BEVT-22A0RT0), with a massive gross capacity of 640 GB spins around at a familiar 5400 rpm. HDTune measured an average value of 67.7 megabytes per second during sequential reading. This value is pretty standard amongst comparable 2.5" hard drives.Toshiba PA3615U-1BRS
The Nvidia GeForce 310M is classified by NVidia as an entry level graphics card which has access to 512 MB of DDR3 memory. The memory is clocked at 790 MHz, while the core is at 625 MHz. The GPU is not really made with games in mind. It does however support the processor with HD decoding (H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 etc.) as well as video coding (CUDA, DirectX Compute und OpenCL).laptop battery for Toshiba PA3615U-1BRM
The 310M supports DirectX-10.1 but not PhysX. The latter could not be used in this application anyway due to the cards level of performance. The 3DMark06 gave it a mere 3.245 points. We are familiar with negative results concerning the game play from plenty of other, comparable test units we have had which is why we decided not to do a gaming test at this point. All of the information you will need concerning the level of gaming that can be achieved can be found in our article about the Nvidia GeForce 310M and in our gaming list. Toshiba PABAS115
The noise levels are quite remarkable and don't leave much to wish for. At a constant 30 dB(A), this 13.3" remains quite when at idle. Even when one gets the impression that the fan has turned itself off, it actually hasn't. At its lowest setting, the fan runs so quietly that our measuring equipment could not detect any noticeable peaks.Toshiba PA3591U-1BAS
Those who use Word and read E-Mails wont even notice the fan is running as this system doesn't go beyond 34.5 dB(A) when confronted with small and spontaneous increases in load. When the i3-Prozessor and Nvidia 310M are called upon at the same time (stress test), the noise does become somewhat noticeable at 40.5 dB(A). The fan on our test unit had an interesting characteristic after being pushed under full load for some time: After a heavy load, the fan would remain at 42.2 dB(A) for about 20 seconds and then dive back down to a substantially lower 34.5 dB(A). laptop battery for Toshiba PA3591U-1BRS
One can't complain about the heat which is generated either. At idle and during office use (which is the scenario that suits the Travelmate best), there are only a few parts that actually get warm (well under 30 degrees). The underside only gets up to 30 degrees in certain places as well.Toshiba PA3589U-1BRS charger
Even during the stress test, we only saw 45 (top) and 40 degrees (underneath). The average values remain well under these however as parts of the base unit were still quite cool. The stress test (FurMark & Prime95) did not managed to get the Intel Core i3-350M over 85 degrees whereas the GPU attained 85 degrees during the same period.Toshiba PA3522U-1BRS
The stereo loudspeakers of the 13.3" laptop can be found at the front behind the air intakes. They deliver a rather high pitched sound which is not all that pleasing. There is not base to speak of, and the settings in the control panel don't have any positive effect. (e.g. virtual surround). The volume they produce however is impressive considering their size. There was no noticeable distortion when the volume was turned to full. External loudspeakers and headphones benefit from a high output level which also turned out to be free of background noise.Toshiba PA3522U-1BAS
One area where the Acer TravelMate 8372TG really shines is the life. As it happens, the i3-350M is actually quite power hungry with its nominal usage of 35 Watts (TDP). Acer chose to compensate for this by installing a 87 Wh (6.000 mAh) and did so with notable success. The only things that suffer are the weight and the appearance due to the protruding . Toshiba PABAS092
It took 5:22 hours (322 minutes) of web surfing until the Travelmate 8372TG needed to be charged up again. In comparison, the Asus PL30JT-RO030X (i5-520UM, 13.3"), with its low voltage CPU lasts for about 378 minutes (84 Wh). During the test, the LED panel was set to an intermediate level of brightness, which is roughly 100 cd/m². Toshiba PA3382U-1BRS
The DVD movie just kept on going and it wasn't until the 3rd showing that the Hobbits finally had to leave the stage. 6:45 hours (405 minutes). A full recharge takes a hefty 3:56 hours. This is a very long time but it is quite acceptable for a of this size. Toshiba PA3382U-1BAS
The Eater Readers Test, lasted a full 7:34 at idle (454 minutes). This is generally not applicable in the real world however as the WLAN was switched off, the TFT was on its lowest setting and the processor had gone to sleep (idle), through a complete lack of activity. The opposite could be seen when subjected to the Eater Classic Mode. Here, the lights went out after 2:56 hours of running OpenGL calculations. Toshiba PA3384U-1BAS
Registering between 11.6 and 14.9 Watt, the power consumption of this 13.3" Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS laptop is not the lowest amongst the low voltage processors (<10 Watt idle depending on brightness and active wireless interfaces). It is still impressive however. A really conservative consumer of power such as the Asus PL30JT-RO030X (520UM) can shine in this segment, using 9.5 Watt during idle and 55.8 Watt under full load. When under maximum load (e.g. stress test), the Multimeter registered a maximum usage of 63.3 Watt. A realistic level of consumption would be around 15 to 20 Watt for office applications. Toshiba PABAS052
The catch phrase of the Acer TravelMate TimelineX 8372TG-354G64N could be: Long life for a competitive price and good performance. Generally, the market would not pay almost 850 Euro for a Core i3-350M system, but it will if it is 13.3" with a dedicated, switchable graphics card. Those who are looking for the performance of a TimelineX 8372TG with a proper low voltage processor (with same life), will have to invest at least 1.500 Euro for a Core i7 640LM (HP EliteBook 2540p).Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS
The long run time of five to seven hours (WLAN surfing /DVD movie), is not the only advantage this 13.3" laptop has to offer. The aluminum/plastic casing (2.11 kilograms), is incredibly strong. The matt surfaces are ideally suited for professional office use. In addition there is also the exemplary ergonomics, the small amount of heat that is produced, and the fan which is very quiet. Business users will appreciate the docking station which connects to the Easy Port IV. Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS
The main weakness that we noticed, is a rather important one, and concerns the input. Toshiba PA3399U-2BAS The keys of the keyboard and touchpad have a very short stroke resulting in a lack of feedback to the user. The interfaces are limited, and this can also not be significantly improved upon by the docking station. There is neither an eSATA, nor ExpressCard or HDMI. There is one model available with UMTS (3G) for approx. 960 Euro (8372T-5454G32N). At the end of the day, the matt HD ready display didn't impress either. The brightness is average at best und delivers a level of contrast which is below that. Toshiba PABAS174
Those who are looking for an even longer life, and are willing to sacrifice performance, should take a look at the Asus PL30JT-RO030X. With its Intel Core i5-520UM it offers all the positive aspects of the new Core i5 generation (integrated Intel HD, Turbo Boost, Hyper Threading).Toshiba PA3782U-1BRS

Akku Dell Latitude E6500
It looks rather meager in the generous, environmental-friendly bamboo pulp packaging. You'll find the according adapter with an European power cable, a large 8 cell battery with a capacity of 84 watt hours, a Velcro cable strap for the adapter's cable, a cleaning cloth and manuals as well as a DVD beside the notebook. Until now, optional supplies especially tailored for the U33 aren't available.DELL Studio 1450 Battery
The keyboard is also suitable for prolific typists due to the generous keys. The American keyboard layout of our test device is striking. It provided a bit of insecurity in the beginning. It will naturally be available in stores with the QWERTZ layout in German-speaking countries. The key size of 15x15 millimeters is sufficient and even large fingers find their way around quickly. The pressure point is clearly felt. However, the small enter key strikes in this construction size. Overall, the US layout makes a clearly arranged and tidy impression.DELL Studio 1450n Battery
The V7.0 touchpad from Synaptics has a very pleasant haptic due to the bamboo texture. The feasible diagonal of 8.7 centimeters is quite generous. The thin border from the wrist-rest is pleasing. The touchpad has a horizontal and vertical scroll bar, which aren't marked though. We regrettably had to live without the latest multi-touch gestures in our test device.DELL Studio 1450R Battery
The touchpad buttons are located directly below the touchpad and separated by a silvery bar. The pressure point and stroke length are crisp and the key noise is hardly audible. Two separate keys would have added to ergonomics.Asus uses a non-AR coated display (type: AUO102C) that has a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels at a size of 13.3 inches.Dell Inspiron 1210 Battery
The given LED backlight allows the display surface to be illuminated brightly and evenly. The maximum brightness of 209 cd/m2 and the average (194.7 cd/m2) are in the broad midrange. The combination of high-gloss surface and moderate brightness rates could cause problems in outdoor use, though.Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Battery
The illumination with a total of 81 percent and the elevated black value (1.24 cd/m2) are rather average. The black value causes a low contrast of 160:1, beside a grayish black representation. The color representation and focus seem alright and don't give reason for complaint.Dell Inspiron 11z Battery
The color assessment with the X-Rite i2Display 2 tool place the screen in the broad midrange. The MacBook with a 13 inch screen is located in a similar price category, but the representable color spectrum is considerably larger. Thus, the U33JC is rather unsuitable for professional users.Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Battery
U33JC vs. sRGB (transparent)Outdoor use is very restricted due to the moderate rates and the display's high-gloss surface. Direct light incidence creates an obvious mirroring of the surroundings and the content becomes illegible. Working in the shade or inside rooms is possible with loss of comfort. Reflections can still turn up, but the content is displayed adequately.Dell Inspiron Mini 1011 Battery
The viewing angle stability is only convincing on the horizontal plane. The image stays stable up to about 160 degrees. Thus, watching movies or looking at pictures is fun even with several people. Vertical movements cause problems because the impression of a negative quickly develops.Dell Inspiron Mini 10v Battery
Asus relies on tried and tested hardware from Intel and Nvidia. The heart is an Intel Core i5-430M processor with a clock rate of 2.26 GHz.Dell Inspiron 1410 Battery It can be increased to 2.53 GHz via Turbo Boost when required. This processor has two physical cores (4 threads) at a structure width of 32 nanometers. Aside the processor's incorporated Intel GMA HD graphics chip a dedicated graphics unit for simple multimedia use is employed in form of Nvidia's GeForce 310M. It has a better performance than the processor's graphics with a core rate of 625 MHz and maximum of 512 MBs. Due to Nvidia's Optimus (automatic graphics switching), the system selects the adequate GPU unit, depending on the requirements.Dell Vostro 1014 Battery
An obsolete Nvidia driver (8.16.11.8964) was installed in our test device. Dell Vostro 1015 BatteryHowever, an update to the latest driver version, 258.96, is not recommendable. A short time after its installation, system crashes and image hangs occurred. Thus, we were forced to reinstall the old driver in Windows 7's secured mode. Nevertheless, an update is very necessary because a few functions and the automatic Optimus switching don't work properly with the old driver. Dell Vostro A840 Battery
Besides the processor and graphics units, a 2.5 inch Western Digital hard disk with a gross capacity of 500 GBs and a 4GB DDR3 10600S RAM is found inside.Dell Vostro A860 Battery However, the latter only works with 1066 GHz instead of the possible 1333 MHz. Interestingly, there are two RAM modules from two different manufacturers found underneath the large maintenance cover on the bottom. The extendability can be overall rated as "good", since both the RAM as well as the hard disk can be replaced.Dell Vostro A860n Battery
The CPU and application benchmarks leave a good impression. The U33JC is in a good midrange for multimedia notebooks with 5363 points in PCMark Vantage. Cinebench R10 supplies a comparable result with a maximum of 6278 points in multi-core rendering (32 bit). The Dell Vostro 3500 (Intel Core i5-430M, Nvidia GeForce 310M) and the somewhat stronger Toshiba Satellite Pro L650-197 with an Intel Core i5-450M and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 graphics unit are in its immediate vicinity. dell vostro 1710 battery

The bamboo notebook is only available with a 2.5 inch drive in Germany. It bids a gross capacity of 500 GB. The Western Digital (WDC) Scorpio Blue with the model label (WD5000BEVT-80A0R) provides acceptable transfer rates for everyday use. It doesn't stand out from the broad mass with a maximum transfer rate of 82.4 MB per second (read) though. However, the unproblematic extendability has to be underlined positively. A fast drive or a solid state drive (SSD) can be installed within a few minutes. Dell Vostro 1510 battery
The Nvidia GeForce 310M is based on the somewhat older GeForce G 210M. Dell Inspiron 1545 battery The clock rates have hardly changed, though. It basically offers a weak gaming performance. Current DirectX 10 games can only be implemented with minimum to medium graphics settings. Complicated tracks, like GTA IV or Need for Speed Shift, don't run smoothly at all. Slightly older games with DirectX 9 support can generally be played smoothly. Ambitioned gamers who put value on good 3D performance should favor a stronger graphics unit. dell xps m1530 battery
A dedicated graphics unit and a modern processor need good cooling and a strong fan. It provides a wide noise range, depending on demand. The U33JC performs very quietly in an ideal mode with the incorporated Intel GMA HD graphics unit and remains inconspicuous with a maximum of 31.0 dB(A). Dell inspiron 1721 battery
The soundscape looks different under load with an enabled Nvidia GeForce 310M. The device can't longer be overheard with a maximum rate of 50.2 dB(A) in the stress test. Another drawback is that the fan only turns down slowly to 30.6 to 35.0 dB(A).dell vostro 1700 battery
The cooling system does its work very efficiently. We measure a maximum of 34.8 degrees Celsius in the vent's area during normal use. The upper side stays within an acceptable range with a maximum of 31.0 degrees Celsius. You don't notice any disturbing temperatures in the usage area due to the bamboo and aluminum surfaces. The assessed rates only increase slightly under load. We notice an obvious selective heating on the bottom with a maximum of 45.2 degrees. However, it's not yet distressing.dell latitude e4300 battery
Asus advertises the U33JC with an "enormously high sound quality" due to SRS Premium Sound. Overall, the high pitches, as well as the volume, are convincing enough to fill a large room with sound. Nevertheless, deep pitches and basses lack substance. Thus, we can't verify the advertised great sound.dell latitude e5500 battery
The notebook bids a 3.5 millimeter jack for external headphones or speakers. This port supplies a sufficient output level if good peripherals are used. The installed HDMI out additionally provide the possibility to supply an AV receiver or TV with audio and video.dell vostro 1720 battery
Reader's TestThe Intel Core i5-430M's and the dedicated Nvidia GeForce 310M's power consumption is kept in limits. This is due to Nvidia's Optimus, which determines the application's graphics requirement and switches automatically. We looked at the power consumption of Intel's GMA HD with and without Super Hybrid Engine's support for one thing. For another, we looked at the consumption with an enabled 310M.Dell Vostro 1310 battery
Intel's HD GMA is addressed in normal use. 8.6 to a maximum of 16.5 watts are consumed with enabled Super Hybrid Engine, which additionally decreases the consumption by reducing hardware performance. The dedicated Nvidia graphics unit is automatically activated under load and the power consumption rockets. The maximum rate is then 71.5 watts, which is within the range of strong multimedia notebooks.Dell Vostro 1510 battery
Just like the power consumption, the battery runtimes vary evidently. A battery life of 10+ hours is indicated by Asus above the keyboard.Dell Inspiron 1545 batteryThe "Reader's Test" simulates the minimum hardware requirement with enabled Intel GMA HD graphics unit. In this case, the display brightness is set to minimum, Windows 7's energy savings profile is enabled, Super Hybrid Engine is active and all mobile technologies disabled. The 8 cell battery's capacity is drained after 8 hours and 44 minutes. Thus, the battery's runtime is still close enough to the advertised specification, but it will hardly be achieved in practical use. Nevertheless, there still is enough time to surf wirelessly on the web. With an enabled WLAN module and an acceptable brightness level, you have 6 hours and 19 minutes to surf on the internet and check emails.dell xps m1530 battery
