own take on what's going wrong with the world.

Godlessness, the sexual revolution, materialism, a lack of table manners; you name it and there's usually a finger pointing at it. Usually. The exception to the rule remains the demise of one of our strongest cultural practices, the ramifications of which still seem to be flying under the radar today.

I'm speaking, of course, of that mainstay of citizen policing from yesteryear: Ladies' Handbag Clobbering. Oh, come on. Let the pacifists say what they like. Back in the day, when the humble carry-all was the preferred weapon of choice for all women, the world was a much safer place. No need for debates over tasers and the like then, one wrong move was likely to be rewarded with an earful of satchel.

We're talking near military-grade ordinance here. A Twitter friend was describing last week how her father was once clocked by a handbag-wielding woman, having been mistaken for Roger Douglas. No-one could blame the attacker for that, I guess. Presumably, even the unlucky victim would have understood once regaining consciousness. But it did get us thinking about the merits of a LHC revival.

For the uninitiated, allow me to explain.

The beauty of Ladies Handbag Clobbering lies in its combined destructive effect. The physical damage is only part of the deal. There's also the sheer spectacle of an enraged woman deploying her fake Christian Dior with roundhouse swings; always a powerful deterrent. And let's not even start on the humiliation of being assailed in such a fashion.

An elder brother once gained first-hand experience of this when attending the cinema back in the 1960s. Having opted to exercise his freedom of choice by not standing for God Save the Queen, he suddenly found himself targeted by a middle-aged harridan, clearly an LHC blackbelt if not a qualified instructor. The bombardment continued for some minutes, even cutting into the opening credits.

You can see where I'm going with this, can't you?

That's right, surely it's time Auckland tweaked a bylaw or three to allow for the return of Ladies Handbag Clobbering. Under urgency, of course, so it's reintroduced before the excesses of the Rugby World Cup. Refresher lessons could be given in the dark arts, tutorials and discussion meetings offered; hardware recommended.

We could even refine the practice, sending out the most proficient LHC specialists on search and destroy missions. Give them a brief to flush out all sorts of community nuisances, from public urinators to Colin Craig, from petty thieves to council bus-lane monitors. I wager the rest would look after itself. Auckland would never look back. Certainly, no-one would ever walk five abreast along K Rd again.

And just imagine if Auckland's biggest pests were to be regularly confronted by the LHC lobby.

Paul Henry would've suffered multiple concussions already, starting at the handbag of Greenpeace spokeswoman, Stephanie Mills. Alasdair Thompson would have been bitch-slapped by Mihingarangi Forbes on national television. John Banks would be at risk every time he opened his mouth, a win-win situation for all.

Still sceptical? Don't be. Folk have already been in touch, volunteering to be part of an advanced LHC guard. One's already promised to provide covert lessons for the women of Epsom, in anticipation of their election candidates. Support is increasing for the movement, numbers are massing on the horizon.

Potted story? It's simple really. If you really want public standards to improve, bring back Ladies Handbag Clobbering. It worked once. Why wouldn't it work again?

The store Sabbadini Roma in Kikar Hamedina in Tel Aviv brings to mind the candy stores of old: Rows of bags and shoes are laid out on transparent glass shelves. The 50-year-old brand has dozens of handbag and shoe stores throughout the world, many of them in Rome. About two years ago the chain opened two stores in Israel.

Sabbadini's shoes, produced by the chain itself, feature very feminine designs, with high, slender heels and a delicate look. For example, a shoe with stiletto heels made of leather and a black satin bow that wraps around the back of the foot up to the ankle. The soft inner sole and the strong ankle support give maximum comfort. Flat ballerina shoes made of leather, with a narrow, round last in the middle of the foot, manage to excel in the two fields that seemingly contradict each other: they are wonderfully comfortable thanks to the soft leather and the pillow-like inner sole, while lending the foot inside them a more graceful, delicate look.

Particularly lovely are two versions of this design, in black and in brown, with a butterfly bow on the toes that recalls jazz shoes.

In recent years the chain has also begun stocking handbags by the Italian designer Carla Braccialini. Braccialini's handmade bags are known for their originality, and include an array of nature-inspired appliques and designs, such as a sun pattern, flowers, butterflies, birds, dogs and cats.

In this summer's collection, Braccialini's designs are inspired mostly by camels. There is, for example, a bowling bag made of reddish-brown leather, with a print of a map reminiscent of an old globe and camels. The bag suits the desert-summer look popular this season, and can serve as a large everyday handbag or a traveling bag for short weekend trips. The camel pattern appears on additional bags in the collection that come in different sizes, and even on a matching shoe collection made by the designer.

The winter collection, to arrive in the brand's stores at the end of this month, will include squirrel and mushroom design motifs. The collection brings to mind a journey through a fairy tale world. It includes a round mushroom bag made of red leather with white spots and green leather leaves adorning the handle, with appliques of flowers in an array of colors. The bag belongs to Braccialini's more expensive line. There are also bags with mushroom appliques in the budget Tua line. These can be found in different sizes and colors. All are made of leather and sewn by hand.

Another motif in the collection is squirrels. Here as well there are bags belonging to Braccialini's expensive line, including a bag in the shape of a squirrel's body with fur sewn on at the top, and others in the Tua line, which include squirrel appliques with mushrooms and flowers.

Not everyone can walk around with a bag of this kind, but still, it is easy to imagine an elegant, slender Roman lady dressed in a classic Prada suit, seeking to dispel her existential boredom with a colorful, original, and humorous accessory such as a Braccialini bag. In Israel as well, there must certainly be enough customers happy to uplift their elegant appearance with a mischievous, colorful element.

Prices: summer shoes: NIS 420-800, winter shoes: NIS 840-1,600; summer bags: NIS 820-2,600, winter bags: NIS 1,170-7,995. Dizengoff 282, He B'Iyar 16, Tel Aviv.

It is time for a commercial break and a single, male viewer watches adverts for grooming products and racy sports cars. The family next door, though, glued to the same programme, is tempted instead by package holidays and a new people carrier.

Broadcasters are to introduce advertisements tailored to the personal tastes of individual viewers by using information gathered from postcodes, viewing preferences and customer research. The move is designed to halt the drift from television to the internet.

BSkyB is trialling a scheme called AdSmart in which adverts will be stored on customers' Sky+HD set-top boxes and transmitted during "live" viewing, ending the traditional "one size fits all" advert break. It aims to roll out the scheme to viewers next year.

However there are fears that "addressable advertising" could be an invasion of privacy and aggravate viewers. BSkyB promised that its 10 million subscribers would receive targeted adverts only with their permission.

Television advertisers are fighting to maintain influence over consumers who are used to receiving a range of targeted advertising responses each time they place a keyword search into Google. An estimated 50 per cent of all advertising spend is wasted, and agencies that buy television advertising space are supporting BSkyB's initiative in the belief that more relevant commercials might prevent viewers' channel-hopping during breaks.

A BSkyB spokesman said: "A single, male might see an advert for a Mondeo but the family next door could see an ad for a people carrier. We could deliver localised ads, so you might see one for the Ford dealership in your area. And we can update ad campaigns. If viewers record a programme at Christmas, we could replace all those Boxing Day furniture sales adverts when the programme is played a month later."

BSkyB added that it would not target customers by analysing which programmes individual viewers watch, nor would it buy in data about their purchasing habits.

The media giant hopes to avoid the controversy that engulfed BT when it employed a system that tracked the internet habits of its customers in order to target them with relevant advertising. Condemned as online snooping, the system was dropped in 2009.

Sky's competitors are also pursuing personalised services. Virgin Media has developed a set-top box that enables up to eight different users, and their viewing tastes, to be identified. The new Virgin TiVo box recommends programmes and films to viewers on the basis of their past choices.

Mr Smith and his partner Jeff Rigby moved to Brooklet 10 years ago and purchased a 48.5-hectare (120-acre) macadamia farm.

Despite downsizing to 4.85ha four years ago, the couple have witnessed immense growth within the nut industry.
“There has been huge growth and shifts,” Mr Smith said.
“The management (of the industry) 10 years ago was very much government-guided.

“There was no marketing or research, no industry body as such, no vision, and it felt like there was no passion.
“We have an area of expanding plantations and tree crops, and that is a very good sign.

“I think the industry will grow ahead of CPI.
“We would need to grow in line with the expected expectations it places on itself and focus on international markets.”

Mr Smith’s story follows a prediction by the Australian Nut Industry Council (ANIC) that the nut industry will be worth $70 million by 2012 – a growth of 200 per cent over four years.

Nuts are one of Australia’s largest horticulture exporters, and the ANIC predicts it will take the top spot in a few years.

Mr Smith, a Sydney businessman turned life- style farmer, believes macadamias are the “Mercedes Benz in the car yard”.
“It is a very exciting and dynamic industry,” he said.

But the industry’s volatility can make it frustrating, he said.
Supply cannot always be controlled, as bad weather or pests have a widespread and instant effect on crops, he said.

Mr Smith predicted his crops would be “slightly” less this season, while some farmers predicted a “40 per cent” decrease.

We’ve just experienced one of our busiest weekends ever at Dog Beach, and I’d like to send out a heartfelt thanks to the many responsible dog beach visitors, neighbors and volunteers who pitched in to make it one of the cleanest dog beach holiday weekends I’ve enjoyed to date. Dogs of many breeds and sizes and their families had a blast at the beach.

Granted, Dog Beach isn’t for everyone; it can be loud, chaotic and jam-packed with rowdy, sloppy, wet dogs. “Dognostics” and Doggie Detractors would no doubt be happier visiting Pere Marquette or one of the many, many other nearby beaches where dogs are forbidden. But when it comes to cleanliness, with the many small volunteer efforts taking place throughout the weekend, I’d dare suggest Dog Beach was even cleaner this year than back when we had an overflowing waste barrel on the beach. The word is getting out: “If you want to keep Dog Beach, help keep it clean.”

Let me close with an invitation welcoming all responsible dog lovers and their well-socialized canine companions at Muskegon Dog Beach. Becoming a Dog Beach Ambassador is easy; simply bring along a few extra waste bags. If you see someone who needs a bag, share one of yours, and if you see a stray mess of any kind, simply pick it up and carry it out.

If your dog might be aggressive or nervous around other dogs or people, but you feel compelled to visit dog beach, first enroll in a series of professional group training sessions and request an honest evaluation. Then wait until a noncrowded weekday to visit and keep your dog on a lead until both of you are comfortable with the experience and sure it will be safe and fun for all involved.

You will feel great knowing that you are setting an excellent example for others, and doing your part to help ensure our Dog Beach will be there for all of us to enjoy for years to come.

A woman punched her daughter in front of her St. Paul elementary school teacher and classmates, calling her a "liar" over a bag of art supplies, according to a criminal complaint filed today.

The Ramsey County attorney's office charged Socorro Eaton, 26, of South St. Paul, with malicious punishment of a child.

Police were called to Bruce Vento Elementary School at 11:07 a.m. Tuesday. An 8-year-old girl's teacher told police that Eaton was late dropping her daughter off for school "and brought her directly to the classroom in front of all the other children," the complaint said.

The girl "had a bag with miscellaneous art supplies that she thought she needed for the last day of class," the complaint said. Easton asked the teacher if she "needed that bag because they were bringing it back and forth to school," the complaint continued.

The teacher responded they weren't working on that project because it was the last day of class. Eaton started screaming and swearing at the girl.

Eaton grabbed the child by the shoulder and used a closed fist to punch her two to three times in the face and chest, the complaint said. The girl started crying and ran into the hallway, with Eaton following and telling her, "Get your (expletive) back in the room or I will beat you in front of the class," the complaint said.

The girl went back into the room crying and Eaton left.
Police interviewed the girl, who said she thought she needed the bag for a school project.

Wine Library's owner and energetic wine expert, Gary Vaynerchuk, has put together a collection of his favorite "wines for dudes" in a sampler six-pack ($50, shipping included). These wines were picked by Vaynerchuk specifically for guys who might not ordinarily try wine or are looking for wine to match with more masculine epicurean feats from the grill. In addition to the six miniature bottles (think hotel minibar size), a $30 gift certificate is included so that dad can buy bigger bottles of his favorite wine. Available online at tastingroom.com.

Wine-tasting seminars are a unique and practical gift and there are so many cool choices in our area. The Washington Wine Academy in Alexandria offers a wide range of courses, starting at $35 for single-night classes and topping $300 for the lengthier professional wine certification classes. Not sure which class dad wants? Buy a gift certificate online and let him choose.

For a real splurge, check out the wine-tasting series at uber-chic Citronelle restaurant in Washington, where master sommelier Kathy Morgan offers a monthly series of classes designed to educate as well as entertain. Morgan, one of only 112 master sommeliers in North America, takes participants on the wine roads less traveled and shares her vast knowledge in everything from wine myths to etiquette. The two-hour classes run about $100 each.

A wine-loving dad can never have too many decanters. They are not only practical, but can be works of art as well. My favorite is the Wine Enthusiast "U" Decanter. It's only $20 and shipping and handling is included (wineenthusiast.com). For $10 more, add a special touch and engrave dad's initials on the decanter. He is sure to think of you whenever he uses it.

When dad wants to open a special bottle of wine, but doesn't want to finish the bottle, he'll be glad he has the automated Wine Vac ($30) vacuum pump. It uses two AA batteries to perfectly seal an open bottle of wine, protecting the bouquet and flavors from oxidation. It's a high-tech way to protect and prolong the enjoyment of any wine. It also has a built-in thermometer to let you know when it has achieved the ideal temperature. Available at Sharper Image and wine specialty shops.

It started 11 years ago in the living room of her Tinley Park home. But the real story of Bagitude! Handbags With Attitude goes back to owner Karla Staley’s childhood.

“I’ve always loved arts and crafts,” she said. “As a kid, I would make dollhouses with cereal boxes.”

Now, as an adult, Staley put the cereal boxes away and began making purses out of cigar boxes. “I thought one day, I could turn this into a purse,” and it literally went from there.

In the beginning, she kept her job as an insurance agent while attending as many art shows and fairs as possible. The cigar boxes have since been replaced with recyclable material ranging from magazines to VHS cases.

“They were cute but not practical because you couldn’t adjust the bottom," Staley said. “And some parents had an issue with their children having a cigar box as a purse.”

But most parents didn’t have any problem with their children carrying purses made from a Harry Potter book.
    The Process

        * Staley pulls out the pages of the book with a heat gun to keep them intact. (The uncovered book is then donated to schools and homeless shelters.)
        * The book’s cover is cut and attached to an art board.
        * What will be the bottom and front of the purse is added out of cardstock purchased from a fabric store.
        * It is then laminated at Office Max.
        * The edges are folded and heat sealed making sure everything is secure.
        * Staley’s mother is in charge of sewing the fabric at the bottom and in the inside of the purse.
        * A twist lock or magnetic catch is added for closing and the purse is finished with a strap that can be beads or a seatbelt strap ordered on-line.
        * The process usually takes two hours.

Not only has Staley’s Harry Potter purses been sold at the gift shop at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry but her work can be found in gift shops of museums, art galleries, theaters and boutiques around the world.

Staley was able to quit her insurance job seven years ago, and today, she makes handbags with recycled items, such as books, magazines, photos, playbills, board games, crossword puzzles, bingo playing cards and Hanna Montana pictures.  She’s even made a commemorate history handbag from a recycled Marshall Field’s bag.

Staley’s big break came when the American University Museum in Washington, D.C., ordered some purses from a wholesale show she attended. The owner had a friend who saw the purses, and she ordered some for her art gallery.

“I’ve gotten business strictly through word of mouth. I meet people, and it literally goes from there,” Staley said.  And word has traveled fast.

When the traveling production of Billy Elliot came to Houston, local ballerinas caught a glimpse of Staley's work.

“The girls flipped out because they saw one of my Billy Elliott purses in the gift shop,” Staley said. “They called me, and I made purses for the whole ballerina staff.”

After attending an art show in Minnesota, Staley was approached by a local actor who wanted to give his play's cast purses as gifts for opening night.  Staley used the play bill to make the purses, and “they were a hit,” she said.  The actor is currently working on a Broadway play, and Staley was asked to make 40 gifts for opening night.

Staley’s customers range from eight to 80 years old and older.

“The older generation likes old record labels,” Staley said, adding that younger customers lean toward pictures.

Going forward, Staley said the future of Bagitude! Handbags with Attitude is man bags, jewelry boxes and file folders.  She’s also starting to make handbags out of wedding invitations.
