    CountryChess
    An alternative chess engine tournament
    Welcome to CountryChess!

    In the first stage, chess engines of the same country will play a double round-robin tournament. The winner of each country competition meets other country winners in qualifying matches or in the Champions League, according to its place on the country ranking list. Top ranked countries will be represented by 2, 3 or even 4 engines in the Champions League.

    About me:
    My name is Geert. I live in Belgium and I am visually impaired. My chess elorating is about 1850 elo. I prefer to update an easy blog, friendly for a blind user. The purpose is to organize tournaments and to share the games and results. I don't like wasting time on unaccessible webdesign programs. So don't expect a perfect lay-out, but let's hope it is good enough though!

    Please, check the Live game page
    for live broadcasting of the CountryChess games.

    Enjoy!

    Countrychess: rules and conditions

    1. What is Countrychess?
    Countrychess is a chess tournament of chess engines from different countries. The winners of each country competition will participate in the Champions League or have to play qualification matches first, depending on the country ranking list. Highly ranked countries can send up to 4 engines to play in the champions league. The winner of the champions league will be the winner of the Countrychess tournament.

    2. Participants

    2.1 To participate, engines must fulfill the following requirements:
    o Must be published as freeware or commercial;
    o Must be sent as private engine;
    o Must be compatible with Fritzgui;
    o Elo must be above 2000;
    o The latest available version will be used.

    2.2 The following engines cannot participate:
    * Engines with an elo below 2000;
    * Engines which are unstable or don’t work properly under Fritzgui.

    2.3 Wildcards
    * Authors of engines with an elo below 2000 can send a request by e-mail to subscribe their program. Some derivative engines are also allowed to participate.

    3. Tournament

    3.1 Country competitions
    * Double round-robin tournament
    The maximum number of participants is 12.
    If there are more than 12 participants, the country tournament will be split into 2 or more divisions. The first and second ranked engines can enter a higher division during the same tournament. Provided another tournament takes place, the 11th and 12th ranked engines are relegated to play 1 division lower.
    6 games engine match if there are only 2 engines available.

    If a round-robin tourney ends in a tie, the winner will be determined according to the following criteria:
    * S-B;
    * Winner of the individual games between tied players;
    * Most wins;
    * Best result with black.

    If the number of participants <8, 6 play-off games will be played. If two or more engines finish equal after all the play-off games have been played, they will play 6 more blitz games of 5 minutes KO. If this will not solve the tie, the same rules (SB, individual results …) are valid for the 30 minute-games.

    3.2 Qualifying matches
    * Start when all country competitions are finished;
    * Matches between 2 engines of different countries; the winner can play the next qualifying round (Q) or the Champions League (CL); the eliminated engines will play a play-off tournament and still can enter the next Q-round or even the CL exceptionally.
    * 12 game matches during Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4.
    If in the qualifying stage a match between two engines ends in a draw after 12 games have been played, the winner will be determined according to the following criteria:
    * Blitz: 6 5-minute games;
    * Highest ranked country;
    * Highest elo rating.

    3.3 Champions League
    * 24 participants;
    * 11-round Swiss system tournament;
    * Engines of the same country can play each other. The winner of the CL will be qualified for the next CL edition.

    3.4 Time control:
    * 1800+10 incremental for all tournaments; (1800+5 incremental during CC00 and CC01)
    300 KO for Blitz games.

    3.5 Test tournament
    Countrychess 00 is a test tournament, meant as start-up for this project. The 11 highest eloranked programs, according to ChessWar, WBEC Ridderkerk, CCRL and CEGT rating lists, automatically qualify for the CL. The other country winners will play a single round-robin qualification tournament. The 13 best engines of this competition qualify for the CL.
    The CL test tournament is also single round-robin with 24 participants. The time control is 1800+5 incremental during the whole CC00 event.
    There are no country points to win; the final standings of the Q and CL test tournament exclusively determine the country ranking start list. For more details about country ranking, see chapter 4: country ranking and elo rating.

    4. Country ranking and elo rating

    4.1 General info (based on UEFA rules – www.uefa.com)
    The Champions League contains 24 engines and is preceded by four qualifying stages. The champions of all countries enter the Champions League or qualifying stages; high ranked countries can send up to 4 engines.

    4.3 Coefficients calculation method

    The Countrychess (CC) coefficients is the performance of engines in the Q/CL during 5 CC tournaments. During that period each country gets 1 point for a win and 0.5 points for a draw.
    During the Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 stage, the following coefficients are used:
    * 1.200 points for a 12-0 win
    * 1.150 points for a 11.5-0.5 win
    * 1.100 points for a 11-1 win
    * …
    * 0.600 points for a 6-6 draw
    * 0.300 points for a 3-9 loss
    * 0.050 points for a 0.5/11.5 loss
    * 0.000 points for a 0-12 loss
    In addition 0.5 bonus point is allocated for each engine reaching the CL.

    The CC coefficients are calculated by taking an average, based on the total number of points divided by the total number of engines of each country, except for the bonus points for reaching the CL which are not divided.

    The CC country ranking is computed by the sum of the last 5 CC tournaments. To determine the participants in the Champions League, the latest ranking is used, because each country should know at the start of the CC how many places it disposes.

    4.4 Elo rating
    Elo ratings are created by Rémy Coulom’s Bayesian Elo tool.
    The start rating is 2400. An engine will appear in the eloranking list after it has played 20 games or more.
