Laat mij beginnen met enkele specificaties over het openbaar vervoer per metro in en rond Manila. Eerst de zogenaamde LRT:

"The Manila Light Rail Transit System, popularly known as the LRT, is a metropolitan rail system serving the Metro Manila area in the Philippines. Although referred to as a light rail system because it originally used light rail vehicles, it is more of a rapid transit (metro) system, such as high passenger throughput, exclusive right-of-way and later use of full metro rolling stock. The LRT is operated by the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), a government-owned and controlled corporation under the authority of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC). Along with the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT-3, also called the Blue Line), and the Philippine National Railways (PNR), the LRT is part of Metro Manila's rail transportation infrastructure known as the Strong Republic Transit System (SRTS). Quick and inexpensive to ride, the LRT serves 579,000 passengers each day. Its 31 stations along over 31 kilometers (19 mi) of mostly elevated track form two lines. LRT Line 1, also called the Yellow Line, opened in 1984 and travels a north–south route. LRT Line 2, the Purple Line, was completed in 2004 and runs east–west. The original LRT Line 1 was built as a no-frills means of public transport and lacks some features and comforts, but the new LRT Line 2 has been built with additional standards and criteria in mind like barrier-free access. Security guards at each station conduct inspections and provide assistance. A reusable plastic magnetic ticketing system has replaced the previous token-based system, and the Flash Pass introduced as a step towards a more integrated transportation system. Many passengers who ride the LRT also take various forms of road-based public transport, such as buses, to and from a LRT station to reach their intended destination. Although it aims to reduce traffic congestion and travel times in the metropolis, the transportation system has only been partially successful due to the rising number of motor vehicles and rapid urbanization. The network's expansion is set on tackling this problem". 

Dan de zogenaamde MRT:

"The Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) is Metro Manila's third rapid transit line. It forms part of the Strong Republic Transit System, which includes the Manila Light Rail Transit System. The line operates under the name Metrostar Express and is colored blue on rail maps.

The line is located along the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of Metro Manila's main thoroughfares. It has thirteen stations along its 16.95 km track which passes through the cities of Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay and Quezon City. While originally intended to decongest EDSA, the MRT-3 has been only partially successful in decongesting EDSA, and congestion is further aggravated by the rising number of motor vehicles.The expansion of the system to cover the entire stretch of EDSA is expected to contribute to current attempts to decongest the thoroughfare and to cut travel times.

Opened in 1999, the MRT-3 is operated by the Metro Rail Transit Corporation (MRTC), a private company operating in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreement. Although it has characteristics of light rail, such as the type of rolling stock used, it is more akin to a rapid transit system".

Dit mag allemaal erg efficient en gebruiksvriendelijk klinken en eenmaal in een station aangekomen is het dat ook wel. Vooraleer men in een station aankomt om daar gebruik te maken van het systeem, is een andere zaak. Een voorbeeld vanuit eigen ervaring, reizend vanuit Antipolo City naar Makati: ik woon in Antipolo City, minder dan 23 kilometers verwijderd van het dichtstbijgelegen LRT-station Santolan. Het duurt bijna een uur om vanuit Antipolo City naar dat bepaalde station te rijden met een gemotoriseerd voertuig (jeepney, taxi met of zonder meter, eigen wagen, motorfiets) want het verkeer is druk, men is altijd wel ergens bezig met openbare werken langs de weg waardoor de baan versmald wordt en gedurende lange tijd is het stapvoets aanschuiven aan belangriijke kruispunten. Eenmaal aangekomen in het LRT-station Santolan gaat het vlug want reisbiljetten kunnen worden aangekocht aan automaten en zowat elke vijf tot zeven minuten komt er wel een voertuig voorbij. Vanuit Santolan dien ik over de stations Katipunan, Anonas te gaan en af te stappen in het volgende: Araneta Center- Cubao Station. De reistijd bedraagt amper enkele minuten. Van daaruit is het te voet door minstens twee shoppingmalls (Gateway Mall en Farmers Plaza) om het dichtstbijgelegen MRT-station te bereiken. Hier kan men geen resibiljetten kopen aan automaten maar dient aangeschoven te worden aan door personeel bediende loketten en de reizigers staan in lange rijen. Eenmaal aan de beurt geweest en een biljet bemachtigd blijkt het alweer vlug te gaan: om de vijf tot zeven minuten komt er wel een voertuig langs. Vandaaruit dien ik over de stations Satolan (een andere Santolan dan voorheen!), Ortigas, Shaw Boulevard, Boni, Guadalupe, Buendia te gaan om uiteindelijk af te stappen in Ayala. De reistijd over al die stations bedraagt al vlug tien tot vijftien minuten. Daarna hangt het er vanaf  wat en waar je in Makati wil doen en hoeveel taxi's, jeepneys of tricycles je daar nodig hebt om ergens te geraken. 

Bij afloop dien je ook weer terug te keren, op dezelfde manier (maar uiteraard in tegenovergestelde richting).
