Today a non biking day. We will be visiting first the magnificent Amber Fort. The idea was to take an elephant as a means of transport, but when we saw the queue we decided to walk up. The was a great view and we saw a constant drip of elephants climbing up with passengers and coming down without to fetch the next load. We visited the fort built in pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble. It was truly splendid and the views breathtaking. We went through the fort accompanied by the comments and information of our guide Singh. He was rather bossy and not too nice. At the end there was a museum shop where I purchased 2 books of Amitah Ghosh and a couple of postcards.
After this visit we went to the City Palace. This marvel still contains a section that is occupied by the royal family.  We were shown the winter palace for the maharanis. This was decorated by encrusted pieces of glasswork from Belgium. When candles were lit, the reflections are like stars and giving an impression of a starry night. It must have been magically beautiful just as in a fairy tale.
Then we were shown the summer palace where cooling was foreseen for the maharanis. The was adjacent to a very nice garden in mogul style. The maharaja had 12 maharanis and each of them had their own courtyard. Contact between them was forbidden and they could talk to the maharaja through guards who would bring the message to him. Then we walked through a room where lots of pictures were hanging, showing us official receptions and event amongst which pictures of the  maharaja with Lady and Lord Mountbatten. This room is used by the maharaja for sessions with his ministers. The were also pictures of all the maharajas that have been reigning. The most remarkable one was  Sawai Madho Singh who was 2m10 tall and weighted 250kg. In the museum where we could watch the garments it was no surprise to see that his pyjama trousers were 3m wide.
The other garments were always splendid and decorated with encrusted gems.
We also visited the hall where the maharaja held his public seatings. There were 2 silvers jars on display. These are recorded in the Guinness book of records as being the largest existing silver jars in the world. These were used to transport the holy water for the maharaja during his visit to London. After all these marvels we went to the hall for the miniature paintings where artist who are still working for the royal family, are showing you their art and what colours they are using.
I purchased a ring with a beautiful lemon topaz.
Then we continued our visits to the observatory. This was built in 1728 and contains huge instruments to record the time of the day, the months and the zodiac signs. Also the position of the sun towards the earth is being measured. This was really very special and impressive. Then we went back to the hotel where we had a lunch and a relaxing afternoon around the pool a d sunning in the grass. In the evening we set out again to view ......., we took lots of pictures but still it was not easy from a distance.
Then we went to a local restaurant for dinner, but before that a couple of us went to the ATM to get some cash.   I got the money out in no time, but when Ria tried, she got a receipt but no cash. We didn't look at it very carefully and the others didn't wish to take any risk. So we went back to the restaurant to discover that the receipt had declined on it so there wasn't any problem at all.
We had a nice meal and also live music and dance. After this we stopped at the palace if the Winds that was still lit so we could make lots of pictures.

Then back to the hotel and this concluded a wonderful day with lots of impressions and great beauty and ingenuity.
Ps Berna still in hospital and not really better. Repatriation is foreseen for end of the week.

Today had a bit of sad start. Berna was taken to hospital. She had been taken ill a couple of days ago and wasn't getting any better. So she and her husband went with Ilse to hospital.

We set out really very very early at 7h30 in the morning. It was going to be a long day  to Jaipur. The idea was to bike first for 50km and then the bus would drive us to Jaipur in +/- 6 hours.
We first had a transfer outside the city and started our biking. It was great fun passing through little villages and waving to the kids.
But this was also the day  of the Weddings. For the first that we saw we stopped. The ladies were all dressed up and singing. There was a big tent were all the men were gathering and in the back sat the groom in full regalia waiting for his bride. It was all very colourful and joyful. Also a decorated horse was there. We think that this is used to bring the bride in. We were invited to this wedding but had to continue our biking. As we went we saw big plates with food been bring in.

Again we had lunch in the courtyard of some local people who were very welcoming and offered us tea. We continued our way and this time again we had dome challenging roads with pieces of brick and lots of rubble. After this we had to bike approximately 400meter on the highway but just as we got to it, I had a puncture and the flat tyre was replaced at the side of the highway. Just imagine doing this in Belgium.

We saw two more weddings. Each time with music, colourfully dressed ladies and a groom in full regalia. We boarded the bus at around 2h30 and at the beginning we were really being literally shaken on the small roads. At times it was really challenging. But we got in the end on the motor way and made progress. After a long journey we got finally to the hotel at 20h30 and were glad to be able to take a shower and have diner.
And guess what: in the hotel there was off course another wedding party going on in the garden next to the swimming pool and an engagement party on the other side if the garden. So this was definitely the wedding day.

Ilse joined us from Jodphur somewhat later and we were relieved to hear that Berna was getting better.

That was the end to a long day.

Today is a non biking day. We set out this morning at 8h30 for the visit of the cremation place of the Maradjah and the Mehrangarh Fort and Palace. Our guide Kepi was providing us with excellent information on the Hindu religion and the customs and prescriptions on the cremation according the the caste a person belongs to. At the entrance we met some people who were carrying some pliant chairs and they told us the were from the U.K and travelling through India while painting.
We visited the memorial that the widow of the maradjah has erected for her defunct husband in 1906. Then we drove ti the fort with the bus and started our visit. The fort is really impressive and a great marvel, We were also shown how a person put his turban on. The fabric is 9m long and it's a real feature to see how crafty this person put this on.
We went from room to room and looked at the elephant seats with gold and silver ornaments.
Then we went through the different rooms of the museum to look at all the beautiful items such as the carry throne in gold that is weighting a 185kg and needs 18 soldiers to carry the maradjah. Further we looked at miniature paintings, the private and public audience rooms of the maradjah. We saw the bedrooms of the lady and her private rooms. At one point in time Nicole and myself got separated from the rest of the group and were looking for the others.  We went through the whole castle and in the end the guys from the audio equipment shop gave us their cellular phone to make a call to Nicole's husband to verify about the whereabouts. The group was still in the castle and we sat down and had a tea in the mean time.
After the visit we drove to the restaurant where we had a lovely lunch. Then we went back to the centre where we had a walk to the shopping streets and the markets. It was a great experience and good fun. You can't imagine how it is until you have walked there. You have to make your way through the rickshas, the other people, the scooters  and the cows. All the tome you have to watch where you're walking and the noise and the smell are constantly assaulting your senses.
We walked through these streets with their tiny shops. We saw also a young man trying out a beautiful traditional costume for his wedding. We went into a spice shop where sone of us purchased saffron, tea and curry herbs. Then our guide brought us to the local vegetable market, but before we got there, we had to go through a little alley that was so narrow that one 1 person at the time could pass through. It was in this alley that the local butchers were located. I will spare you the description and the smell. We went to a shop selling pashminas a d in view of the coming Christmas and year end, Brigitte, Palmyre, Nellie, Yves and myself did our purchases of beautiful scarves.
Then we visited the market and saw some ladies selling fabrics. Our guide told us that these were secondhand saris that had belonged to now defunct ladies. But that didn't prevent Brigitte, Palmyre and myself of some purchases.

In the evening, a meal on the rooftop restaurant of our hotel concluded our day

Now we are finally back online after a couple of days off.

Today we biked 65 km in total. We set out at 8h30 in the morning with our bikes. At breakfast we were all congratukating Nikki with her Birthday. Today we did a lot of little roads but we did not pass through many little villages. We tried to do as much km as possible before noon, because afterwards it was getting quite hot. For lunch we had sandwiches which we ate in a farm along the way. The farmer showed us his family and house and we even met his mother and spouse. Then we continued our way and it was getting very hot. In the end we all got very sweaty after we had to bike through a stretch without any trees in the scorching sun and with sand on both sides. It made me think of the Namib desert.
The other roads were rather monotonous and we were all happy when we saw the bus. We still had 2.5 hours drive before us before we got to Jodhpur. When we got there we had to take rickshas to get to the hotel. It was quite an experience to get there through the complete chaos that is called traffic!
We were happy to have a good shower and meal. As a dessert Nikky received a great Birthday cake. We all celebrated while looking at the spectacular views thar Jodhpur was offering amongst which the Fort.

Today we biked 53 km in total. We had a nice relaxing breakfast and started at 9 in the morning.
We were told that the first 10 km would be sand road and thus more challenging. The technique to tackle this was to use a very small gear, put your weight to the back of your saddle and keep on biking. In the beginning we managed quite all right, although Alphonse had a punctured tyre, but we continued our way at a reasonable pace. Nothing prepared us for the 5 km stretch where the road was in the beginning of construction and big pieces of brick rubble covered the whole road. This was a real mountain-bike challenge and we all had to negotiate our way through this. Unfortunately Berna had a bad fall and a nasty gash in her knee. On top of that she wasn't feeling well so she had to take the followers car. We continued our way through the desert with shrubs and  bushes with yellow flowers and with mountains around us. It was getting very hot and we had a lunch break in the shadow. Where ever we passed a village we were welcomed by hallo's and hi's and if we stopped for a break, then the whole village came out to have a look. At one point Johnny swapped bikes with a local lad and they had a bit of a race. It was great fun for every one and we were all laughing. We were taking pictures of us and we of them.

We continued our journey and arrived at our hotel fir the night. It looked like a real palace with swimming pool and different courtyard. We were welcomed with a blessing in the form of a red dot between the eyes and a charm around our neck. All our rooms were different from another. Ours was splendid with a peacock theme and in the blues and greens of a peacock. Next doors room had a night sky theme in deep blue and with little round mirrors all over the wall the were bright as twinkling stars when the light was shining. The swimming pool was lovely and Ria, Mieke and myself had a most refreshing swim and refreshments while we were sunbathing around the pool. At 5 Pm we set out in two jeeps towards the nature park nearby on safari to look for leopards. Nature was splendid and at one point we stopped and were offered masala t tea. In a funny little cip thst was offered to us. We spend a lot of time looking for the leopards. It was dark, The driver of our jeep was trying to call them by imitating a goat's cry but to no avail. We didn't see any leopards but since there are 5 in the region we would have been very lycky to encounter one.We ended our day by dinner together.

We set out at 8 in the morning for our 76km journey to Korta.

Since the road was flat and we did not had any climbs nor descents we made really good progess and had already biked 13km before we made our first stop. There were several ladies who were looking for the washrooms and these were not exactly what we were expecting. Behind a small stone wall that was as high as my legs 3 places separate by also a small wall each had a floor of tiles that were slanting downwards and with a little whole in the middle. This was it.  We were laughing but it served perfectly.
We continued our journey and were happily passing all the small villages and biking through the countryside until suddenly Nellie had a flat tyre. We were biking with 4 ladies  together and we waited until the technical assistance caught up with us. The wheel was changed and we were told that our stop with the snacks was 500 meter down the road. By the tome we got there Bob also had a flat tyre and one of us had a close encounter with a nasty torn. Bob's tyre got repaired in the old way by looking in a basin of water where the puncture was and an instant repair was done.
We continued our journey and decided after 50 km to stop in a small village for lunch. Off course in no time all the people living in the village came out to look at us. It was quite fun because as we were taking pictures of them, some of them took pictures of us! We took leave of the villagers and started for 25 km more. Again the road brought us through small picturesque villages with women dressed in bright colours and rings through their noses. The man were wearing colourful tulbands. I must say that the roads itself were at times in very bad condition with pieces missing in the macadam or rubble instead of the pavement and that wasn't a good treatment for our behinds. We were all sore by the time we arrived. Gradually  nature became more desertlike and it was very hot. At the next stop we still had 11 km to go. At this point Palmyre and Sabir left us to go shopping for a new camera in a little town some 20 km away. We were told to stick together since we had a highway to cross. It's nothing like those we have in Europe. Trucks and cars and bicycles, cows and goats were travelling along. So there was heavy traffic and we all crossed safely and continued our ultimate kilometres in a beautiful little road where shadow was provided by the treetops that were like an arch over our heads.
When we arrived we were all tired and were glad to be able yo sit down and have some fresh lemonade. The Korta Escape resort is in a beautiful setting in the desert. We each had our own private little bungalow that was set in a beautiful garden. Our next item was a visit to the local village and see how the livestock, came home after a day in the surrounding fields. It was a special experience. We were literally surrounded by the children of all age. The were very curious to know our name and it was great fun. The herds of cows and goats came home with their keepers in a cloud of dust. Loads if pictures were taken.

When we came back it was time for a drink. We sat in a circle and little candles were placed next to us, so it looked quite romantic. To complete a fire was made in the middle and with the bright stars above us it was just a perfect way to relax before diner.

Today we started at 8 o'clock to visit the Kumbalgar Fort. This fort was built in the 15th century. The setting and surroundings of this fort are just breathtaking. We had a serious walk and then a rather steep climb up there. Our guide Selim explained us very well on the history and when the old and new part were built. Marahadja Khumbha ordered this fort to be built. It contained at one point hundreds of temples most of them Jain temples and a minority Hindou.
The sights were absolutely splendid and this 360 degrees around. It was a brillant experience for all of us. We took our time and the follow bus came to pick us up. We drove a little bit further and then we had a choice : either we started for an 8 km very challenging steep part of the road or we could take the bus until the 2nd departure place. All the men started out right away and only Ria and Palmyre of the women took the challenge.
Then we all joined in and started the way to Ranakpur. The road was really beautiful and  we past a number of little villages where the local population was very colourful and also very interested in those crazy westerners on their bikes....
After 38 km we had lunch in a lovely restaurant where we saw another tourist group coming from Australia,
After lunch we had a steep downhill run of 12km towards the largest Jain temple of India: Adinath. The is the most precious and beautiful edifice that i have seen ever.  This temple was built in milk-white marble in the 15th century and contains 1444 engraved pillars each different from another. It is a real jewel. We were all impressed by it's beauty and were taking masses of pictures. We could have gone on and on. But in the end we all came out there enchanted by so much beauty and took our bikes for the ultimate 3 km towards our hotel Ranakpur Hill Resort. This has a beautiful swimming pool and also a little chop where i found matching earrings with my necklace. We had a drink sitting in the garden next to the swimming pool enjoying the beautiful day. Palmyre wasn't so lucky this evening. She dropped her camera and broke it and this at the beginning of our journey.  She told us that this is a bad habit of hers and that she manages to break a camera each time she takes a vacation.Tomorrow she will go shopping for a new one.

The day ended with the whole group having a lovely dinner at the hotel.

This morning after breakfast we started for our journey by the tbst brought us outside the city and traffic.
There were some brandnew bikes since the evening before it was noted that some bikes were not performing according to standards. We started our 45 km bike tour in a wonderful setting in the mountains. Some of these hills were very steap and I had to step off and walk up on several occasions. But it was great to arrive on top and we stopped in beatiful little tribal villages were people came to look at us and thus the discovery was on both sides because the people are not at all used to see western people. We stopped quite a bit to recuperate and allow everone to catch up and have a snack and some water.

We biked for quite a bit around a beatiful lake were we stopped to have lunch. We had a splendid view on this lake whilst we were having our prepacked lunch.

By then we had biked already 30 km and we started to go back to the hotel where we arrived in the middle of the afternoon and enjoyed a drink in the sun looking over the lake.

After breakfast at the rooftop of the hotelwe looked at the bikes but we did not try these at that moment. We were heading with the bus to the City Palace. This appears at first to be one single residence, but after the first maharana Udai Singh put up the original edifice, no less than 22 later maharanas added to this. Our guide took us through lots of chambers and places in the palace . He also showed us the summer residence in the mountains as well as the guest residence on the lake. It was a great sight!
After a delicious lunch we went back to the hotel to try out the bikes and have our first ride of 10km. The try-out took longer than foreseen but we all went off for a tour around the lake. We also visited the little village Hawala where we some of the local people were performing for us.
It was a typical tribal village but since it was already getting dark we couldn't stay any longer. We biked back around the lake and it was a beautiful sight with the full moon rising.

At the hotel we had a lovele dinner on the top of the roof with a fantastic view on the lake. We started the meal with champagne to celebrate and toast to Johnny's Birthday. To make the surprise complete, our support manager's wife made a delicious birthday cake and we all sang Happy Birthday to you for Johnny. That was the end of a great day.

After a good flight and a smooth arrival at the airport we had our first traffic experience with the Dehli traffic. AfTer a good rest we were woken by the laundry man and a good thing he rang us up because otherwise we would had overslept. We set out with our appointed tourist guide and our first visit was to the grand mosque Jama Masjid. We arrived there after a busride through the most chaotic traffic I have seen. After taking off our shoes and putting on a long gown that was handed out to us, we were allowed in.

This was a quite impressive building built by Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1658.
After the visit there we all took 2 by 2 rikjas to visit the largest whole sale market of India: Chandni Chowk with crowds of rickshaws, carts pushing goods all over the place. There were narrow streets with nothing else than books or automobileparts. Quite an experience for all the senses.
After this we took the bus to visit Mahatma Ghandi's cremation site with the memorial stone.
The were lots and lots of schoolkids who were yelling and waving to us.
After this we went to the restaurant to have a delicious lunch.

After this again and yet another busride we arrived at the beautiful site of Humayun's Tomb. This is a beautiful example of early Mughal architecture. It gave us already a flavour of what we will see in Agra when we will visit the Taj Mahal. It is also set in beautiful surrounding gardens and we got away from the constant noise and got some tranquility. Next we were going to Qutb Minar. This is a victory tower of 73m high. The stones of the hindu temple were used to build thus muslim edifice. It a really beautiful archeological site.
After this it was a rush to the station in the hectic traffic in Dehli and we barely made it and just got on the train as it was leaving. But then there was huge confusion and it took a while before we were all settled down in our respective compartments as we were seated in different sections of the train. It was great fun preparing for the night and we all slept rather well with some small issues such as dropping your blanket from the top bunk. The train got us to Udaipur by 7 the next morning.
