Oyez ! Oyez ! Oyez ! Aandacht ! Aandacht ! Boeren, Burgers en Buitenlui !...Ja, zo begint een Engelse 'town crier', een Vlaamse 'belleman' of een Nederlandse 'stadsomroeper' zijn betoog. U krijgt hier een overzicht van de herkomst van deze beroepsactiviteit, met een blik in het verleden en hoe het op de dag van vandaag nog steeds, zij het nu eerder als hobby of toeristische attractie, in ere wordt gehouden. Hier kunnen jullie dan ook mijn reilen en zeilen als de Izegemse stadsomroeper volgen, vanaf het begin (met de opening van de Izegemse Centrale Doortocht in 2004)tot op heden. van 26 juli tot en met 05 augustus 2012

My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen
Fellow Criers... We have, as you all have, received the Invitation to an International Competition in Hull (England) from Crier Michael Wood. Those of you who where part of that great competition in Chester, hosted expertly by Squire David Mitchell, heard us announce that we had been working on a unique competition to be held between the old capital of Canada, Historic Kingston
and the current capital of Canada, Regal Ottawa.
We are looking at a competition event that takes place
from the 26th of July to the 5th of August, 2013 (10 days).
We are committed to that time frame because our main sponsor is the Rideau Canal Festival.. A major Green festival held around this UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches from Kingston to Ottawa.

We also have interest from
the 'Alliance for the Bicentennial of the Battle of 1812'-committee,
as 2012 marks an historic milestone celebration the war of 1812 and 200 years of peace between our nations.
The weekend ending on the 6th of August is also a major holiday in Canada. This is a great visitor draw.

Battle of the Capitals World Town Crier Tournament

There has never been a Championship held in a Major Capital, let alone two. There are over a hundred Embassies within Ottawa’s city limits, with news media outlets from every major city around the world. Famous Parliament Hill and a plethora of world class museums and attractions await.

Kingston (Canada’s First Capital) is an historical Mecca... from the world famous 'Thousand Islands' (as most of you know from hearing Chris’s hometown cry in Chester) where boat cruises take you through their majesty and beauty, to the Period Military Fort Henry (a living museum) where a sunset ceremony with all the pomp and pageantry unfolds, and much more.

In Canada : grants are awarded a year before... which means that we are waiting for 2011 to decide on the number of Criers who will be able to participate in this unique once in a lifetime competition.
Two Cities... two crowd drawing communities, unique venues, A Capital, A great celebration and ten days that you will remember for ever.
The first fully bilingual competition ever held in North-America,
where all languages will be judged equally, thanks to the
International make-up of Ottawa and Kingston.

So all that we ask is that before you commit, wait to see the merits of both events and then make your choice knowing that it is the right one.

We wish Michael Wood the very best for his event and for those who are unable to take part in the event in Canada, we encourage you to support Michael and his competition.

Guidfords Town Crier David Peters Rings Out The Bells

Guildford’s town crier and beadle David Peters has a choice of three bells to ring – all over 100 years old – when he is called to perform his time-honoured duties.

There’s what’s known as ‘the town bell’, a heavy bell indeed; that is technically the official bell for his duties to the borough of Guildford. It’s a bell that has been used by at least seven of his predecessors as it is engraved with their names. The first states: ‘T. Lovett, to 1845′. Timothy Lovett took up his post in 1820, stepping down in 1845.

Other names on the bell include David’s father (Arthur), grandfather (Jessie) and great-grandfather (Albany). Yes, town crying runs in the Peters family. They have held the post of Guildford’s town crier unbroken for 101 years.

Of his second bell, David says: “This one was presented to my great-grandfather in 1918 by the magazine John Bull. I think it was in recognition of some fundraising he did during the First World War and town crying as Guildford went about encouraging men to enlist in the services.”

He rarely uses this bell now as he dropped it in Guildford High Street a few years ago resulting in a chip being taken out of the rim. It is crudely engraved with details about it being presented to his great-grandfather by ‘John Bull Limited’. It is also stamped ’14′ that may refer to the musical note it makes.

“I was wearing white gloves at the time and the bell slipped out my hand,” he says. “Now, when I am ringing my bell I do not wear gloves, only when carrying my beadle stick in town processions.”

The third bell is the one David uses on most occasions. It is slightly smaller and lighter in weight that the other two – but just as loud.

“It is much lighter to carry around,’ says David, ‘I bought it in a junk shop in Horley. I don’t exactly know how old it is – it’s likely to be over 100 years. I think it might have been a school bell.”

David became Guildford’s town crier in 1990. He also holds the ancient post of beadle. An enactment in 1547 said that every parish in the land should appoint a beadle who had the right to enter ale houses on Sundays and other holy days at the time of divine service and fine all the people found drinking and eating, six pence. The beadle was allowed to keep tuppence of each fine while the rest was paid to the mayor who was supposed to distribute it to the poor.

It was both a means of paying the beadle and finding out who had not been attending church, or which masters were not ensuring that their servants or employees were at church.

When you see David at the head of one of the official processions in Guildford High Street, such as the mayor making each May, the Remembrance Sunday service and the recent royal proclamation to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne, you will see him holding his beadle stick.

A much older stick, used by other members of the Peters family and their predecessors, is now on display in the Guildhall. He had his stick made about 10 years. It is a copy of the earlier one.

The object at the top of the stick is made of wood with a metal cross. He said: “It features a woolsack, the castle keep, with the top part that I believe represents the tower of the former Holy Trinity Church.”

His duties today add a touch of colour to ceremonial occasions. But one task which he doesn’t have to do is to administer public whippings on behalf of punishment dished out by the mayor.

Another of the beadle’s jobs was to guard the town and its mayor. He made nightly rounds crying out the state of the weather and the time, no doubt adding at the end the words “and all’s well.”

World Town Crier Tournament
from 27 July to 03 August 2012
in the happening city of Hull in East Yorkshire.

We have 100 double rooms, all in the same hotel, located 300 yards from both Hull's train and bus station. The hotel is also located within 600 yards of the city centre where local rounds of the competition will take place.

Travelling to Hull could not be easier. For travellers arriving on long haul flights we have a direct train link to Hull from either Kings Cross London in the south, or Manchester in the north.
The regional Humberside airport is located 15 miles away with a bus or taxi service.
For travellers arriving from Europe, two ferries arrive daily in Hull, one from Holland and one from Belgium.

You will see from the invitation we have a fabulous week's programme of activities and with no daily travel in or out of the city for competitors, this will mean there will be plenty of time for relaxing, socialising and sight-seeing.

What we (the organisers) require at this stage is to know that we have the interest 100 criers wanting to take part.
There will be a £50 none returnable payment/bond for each individual attending - escorts must be in costume
(e.g. £100 in total for crier and escort).

I do not have every Town Crier's email address and I would therefore ask that Guild/Company secretaries please pass this email on to all of their members.

We do hope you will all want to come and enjoy not only a town crying competition but also a cultural event at which you will have the opportunity to put your communities on the map in what will be a very high profile occasion.

THE SUMMER OF 2012 WORLD TOWN CRIER TOURNAMENT

HULL & EAST YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND.

INTRODUCTION

It is with great pleasure that I inform you about The Summer of 2012 World Town Crier Tournament taking place in the historic maritime city of Kingston upon Hull and surrounding area of East Yorkshire, from 27 July to 03 August 2012. We have places for 100 hundred bona-fide Town Criers, accompanied by costumed escorts. (If over subscribed a selection process will be used.)

In addition to the competition element this unprecedented event is also a cultural occasion when Britain and Yorkshire will be showcasing its welcoming hospitality. The invite to attend is also one of inviting Town Criers of the World to come and ‘break bread.’ During each evening meal that is provided for competitors it will be preceded by a ‘breaking of bread’ ceremony and in doing so the skills of the craft baker and his/her produce will be celebrated in spectacular fashion.

THEMES OF CRIES

The themes of cries of not more than 100 words will be:

· Hometown Cry

· Heritage Crafts Cry

· A cry for The Olympics

JUDGING

To allow for criers whose native tongue is not English, judging will be on 4 categories:

· Volume and Intonation (This recognises the messenger’s oratory skills)

· Content of Cry (This recognises the writing skill of the actual message)

· Style (This recognises ‘not just the selling of the sausage but the sizzle as well’)

· Accuracy.

On adding the scores from the three qualifying rounds of competition, the top twenty will go forward to a final cry-off. The result of the cry-off will recognise the highest scoring male, and the highest scoring female, but with the overall top scoring individual being judged as The Summer of 2012 World Town Crier Tournament Champion. It is likely that by the time the final cry-off takes place, an interest by the world’s media camped in London will have been generated. Indeed they will have been invited to report on their fellow countrymen/women taking part in this spectacular event, which runs alongside but is not part of the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the two years leading up to the tournament promotional PR initiatives will also be taking place on a world-wide scale in the communities of those Town Criers attending.

SKILLS WORTH SHOUTING ABOUT

As a sub theme to the competition it is intended to give a high profile to the skills of traditional crafts. The Heritage Crafts Cry can be on any national, but preferably local to your area, heritage craft subject. You will be allowed to take a visual aid of your craft subject on to the stage for dramatic as well as vocal effect. (Boomerangs may have some health and safety issues!)

Competitors will be asked to forward their craft item, tool or image to the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, for public display well before the tournament. Competitors will therefore not need to travel with their item but can collect it for use on the competition day. It is hoped that competitors will donate their item so that the full display of craft items can continue after the competition and go on tour around Britain. We would also like a copy of your cry to be displayed alongside your craft item.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Some of the exciting events we have in store for you during the week include:

· Watching the Olympic opening ceremony on a big screen at a major Hull venue.

· Taking part in a genuine historic medieval banquet in York.

· A trip to the seaside town of Bridlington and a fish and chip supper.

· The opportunity to be part of a ‘bells-up’ for Yorkshire Day in beautiful Beverley.

· The chance to be crowned The Summer of 2012 World Town Crier Tournament Champion.

· The opportunity to ‘shout up’ your Olympic team/the Olympic ideals and bring attention to your hometown communities in an event that has the potential of a world audience and media looking in.

SUMMARY

For you to be part of this unprecedented and exciting event we only need you at this stage to register your interest to attend. When doing so please mention your official status, e.g., that you have been appointed by a Council, Lord of the Manor, or Town Centre Forum/BID and you have been in the post for at least one year representing your communities. Also for reasons of Public Liability Insurance, when replying please list the details of any Guild of Company that you are a member of.

Dear Town Criers and Escorts,

It is with great disappointment that I inform you with news about the hoped
for World Town Crier Tournament in Hull, 2012.

Due to the economic downturn in Britain, guaranteed promises from prospective sponsors now appear doubtful.

In order that I do not keep you hanging on in the hope that it will still go ahead,
it has been decided to cancel the event ! ! !

The good news, of course, is that Chris Whyman - Kingston Ontario
and Daniel Riche dit La Fleche - Ottawa/Gatineau are organising a world tournament between the old capital of Canada: Historic Kingston and the current capital of Canada:
Regal Ottawa between 27 July to 6 August 2012.

I can only apologise for any planning you may have made around attending Hull in 2012 and would recommend that you contact Chris and Daniel to let them know if your interest to attend their competition, which looks to be a fantastic event.

Thank you to all of those who showed an interest in coming to Hull.
I wish you all well and, I reiterate that disappointed as I am at not being able to extend my region's hospitality, I feel that Chris and Daniel will represent the town crying fraternity with a first class world championship event.

Verslag omroepersconcours Dadizele 1 mei 2012

In het kader van een reeks wedstrijden voor Nederlandse omroepers en Vlaamse bellemannen en het klassement voor het Nederlands Kampioenschap voor Stads- en Dorpsomroepers 2012, was een eerste bijeenkomst georganiseerd door de plaatselijke belleman uit het Westvlaamse Dadizele, André Pauwels.

Het zou voor de gelegenheid een 'Open Pompeschitters Kampioenschap' worden, zodat bellemannen, die geen lid zijn van een of andere omroepersvereniging of gilde, ook zouden kunnen deelnemen aan dit evenement.
Naast de Nederlandse delegatie met Frans Van Den Bos (Harderwijk), Peter De Jong (Vlaardingen), Geert Veen (Winschoten/Oldambt), Harmen De Vries (IJlst), Henk Bijlsma (Bolsward), Henk van den Nieuwenhuizen (Oisterwijk), Jan Prins (De Rijp), Marco Van Avermaete (Philippine), Lydia van der Nat (Delft-museum Rotterdam), Peer Witzel (Alphen ad Maas), Piet Schuin (Hattem), Wim De Smit (Borsele) en als gastroeper Bertus Krabbe uit Kampen, namen ikzelf (Guy Vandendriessche uit Izegem), maar ook André Pauwels zelf (Dadizele), Gerard Vercauteren (Temse) en Odilon Wiels (Zele) deel aan de wedstrijd. Daarnaast kregen we nog het gezelschap van Peter Caesens (Kortrijk) en Leo Delaleeuw (Kemmel/heuvelland/Ieper) die buiten competitie ook een roep ten berde brachten.

Het protocol startte om 10.00u met de ontvangst van de deelnemers en hun begeleiders in het stadspark 't Torreke waar de gasten in de ontvangstzaal konden genieten van de koffie, thee, melk en fruisap en natuurlijk een stukje (of twee) lekkere Pompeschitterstaart.
Daarna konden de omroepers zich gaan omkleden in een aanlengende zaal.

Om 11.00u stipt werden we aan het in het park opgestelde podium ontvangen door de burgemeester Dhr Marc Vermont en het was moderator Wim De Smit die ons een na een aan de burgervader voorstelde. Groeten en presentjes werden uitgewisseld en tenslotte moest ook nog de loting geschieden die de volgorde van optreden der omroepers zou bepalen.

Na dit gebeuren vrolijkte Wim de talrijk opgekomen toehoorders op met vrolijke Nederlandse volksliedjes (Zeeuwse mosselen, Klokken van Arnemuiden, Bootje op de Amstel,... wie kent ze nu nog niet !!! En de zon was van de partij !!!

Om 12.15u werd ons door de organisatie een lunch aangeboden in de vorm van belegde broodjes met soep, koffie, thee, fruitsap of melk. Lekker !!

Om 13.30u klonk het startsein voor de competitie met de opgelegde 'roep' over een item in Dadizele/Moorsele. Aan de jurytafel zetelden Marieke (vriendin van de Pompeschitter), Marc Vermont (burgemeester), Liselotte Lemaitre (toneelkring), Rik Bekaert (Schepen toerisme) en tijdopnemer Frank Verstraten.

Frans had het over de Spaanse kapel, Peter bezong de basiliek, Geert kreeg uiteraard het Rosarium voor zijn rekening (ja dat hebben ze ook in Dadizele, Geert !), Harmen schertste over het Pompeschitterbeeldje, Henk B. Had het over Pater Lievens, Henk VDN. had het over de Franse zusterstad Canny Barville, Jan had het over de Heemkring, Marco had het over het ontstaan vh bedevaartsoord, Lydia kreeg het teloorgegane Dadipark voor haar rekening, Peer moest iets vertellen over de legendarische koster Jan Onraedt, nog een legende van de Drie Ossen was voor Piet en Wim vertelde de geschiedenis van de plaatselijke belleman.

De Vlaamse delegatie kreeg het ook niet makkelijk : Guy tekende het beeld van wielrenner Cyrille Van Hauwaert, Peter C. moest ook iets vertellen over de verbroedering met het Franse stadje Canny Barville, Leo vulde aan met Pater Lievens, Gerard had het over de plaatselijke lekkernijen, Odilon moest ook het bedevaartsoord nog eens uit de doeken doen en André (hoe kon het anders) schetste de geschiedenis van de Pompeschitter.

Daarna volgde een pauze waar we de gelegenheid hadden om een kleine tentoonstelling van stadsomroepers/belleman-materiaal en documentatie konden bewonderen en die muzikaal opgevuld werd door volksliederen en gezang van Wim.

Om 15.00u kwamen we dan aan met onze tweede roep, waarbij elke omroeper dan zijn eigen stad/dorp bij het publiek moest promoten. Voorkomen, tekstvorming en verstaanbaarheid speelden hier wederom een belangrijke rol.

Daarna een korte pauze waar de jury van gebruik maakte om in beraad te gaan. De jongsten onder de aanwezigen werden ook niet vergeten : ik moest ze van het springkasteel halen en naar het podium sturen, want daar wachtte hen een plezante verrassing.
Na de samenzang met de bellemannen (“Lief klein konijntje had een vliegje op z'n neus...”) werden de kinderen beloond met een heuse vuvuzela, geschonken door de Nederlandse organisatie 'Van Alle Markten Thuis'.

Om 16.30 werd de uitslag bekend gemaakt : eerste was Henk Van den Nieuwenhuizen, tweede Lydia van der Nat en derde Henk Bijlsma. Gevolgd door een fotomoment voor de plaatselijke pers.

Om 17.30u werd het evenement afgesloten met een diner in bistro-restaurant 'De Historic' waar we soep, Vlaamse karbonaden met frietjes en een groetenschotel en achteraf een lekkere ijscoupe gepresenteerd kregen... een cadeau van de organisatie.

Van André kregen we nog een lekkernij onder de vorm van een chocolaatje, vervaardigt door plaatselijke mindervalide medemensen en Leo deelde badges uit van Ieper-Vredestad, samen met een uitnodiging om samen op te stappen in de Kattestoet volgende zondag !

Tegen de klok van 20.00u was het voor sommige Nederlanders de hoogste tijd om afscheid te nemen, want ze hadden nog een lange rit voor de boeg (als ze al niet bleven overnachten in Dadizele...).

De 'kop is eraf', zeggen ze Vlaanderen... een fantastische start voor een veelbelovend roepseizoen !!!

Beste dank aan André en Roos (en alle medewerkers daar in Dadizele) voor het welslagen van dit evenement !!!

Europees kampioenschap voor bellemannen 2012

De Veurnse belleman Joris Goens verdedigt komend weekend, 28 en 29 april, in het Engelse visserstadje Robin Hood’s Bay zijn titel van Gildekampioen van de bellemannen van het Europese continent..

Nadat Joris Goens in 2008 tweede werd op het Europees Kampioenschap in het Nederlandse Almelo, behaalde hij de titel van Europees Gildenkampioen uiteindelijk twee jaar terug in Ninove.
“De stem zit goed. De vorm is goed. ‘The spirit’ zit goed”,
zegt Joris Goens die maar al te graag opnieuw kampioen zou willen worden. Hij zal naar eigen zeggen zijn beste ‘stem’ voorzetten.
De Veurnse Belleman neemt het dit weekend op tegen 13 collega’s bellemannen tijdens het “Gildekampioenschap van de bellemannen van het Europese continent”. Ze zullen in totaal drie maal ‘een roep’ moeten doen. Zondag in de late namiddag weet Joris Goens of hij de begeerde titel en bijgaande medaille opnieuw op zijn veldwachterskostuum mag steken.

Hans Van Laethem, de belleman van Ninove, is tweede geëindigd op het Europees kampioenschap. Twee jaar geleden vond deze titelstrijd nog plaats in Ninove. Toen kondigde de belleman van het Britse Whitby, Andy Lowe, aan om dit jaar het kampioenschap in zijn stad te organiseren.

Hans Van Laethem was tijdens de hele wedstrijd in de running om de overwinning binnen te halen maar eindigde op de tweede plaats. Het feit dat hij door omstandigheden net iets te laat zijn roepen had ingestuurd, kostte hem enkele punten en wellicht de overwinning.

Europees kampioen werd Peder Nielsen, de belleman van het Engelse Bromyard.

Opening Bellewaerde Park en WTV interview

Afgelopen zaterdag 31 maart werd ik gevraagd om de officiële start van het Bellewaerde Park nabij Ieper in te luiden en terzelfdertijd een interview af te staan voor het nieuwe programma van Focus WTV : Alles Goed !

Het was jammergenoeg bewolkt en ijzig koud op het podium, maar af en toe een hete koffie hielp daarbij wel een handje.
Ik werd achtereenvolgens geschminkt, gebriefd en geinterviewed door Caroline, waarna mijzelf nog een veertiental items aan bod kwamen : roofvogels, cabaretier, zwaardvechters, Scala, Hof van Commerce,... enz.

Na afloop van het optreden genoten wij nog van een rustige wandeling door het park...

Reus 'Den Burger' Deurne

Op zaterdag 24 maart was ik te gast in Deurne (Antwerpen) alwaar ik 'Den Burger', de nieuwe stadsreus, mocht inhuldigen en de optocht van het geboortehuis van deze oud-burgemeester naar het districtshuis - onder de marstonen van de Antwerpse Red Hakle Pipe Band - mocht voorgaan.
Het was schitterend weer en wij kregen dan ook de nodige aandacht van de bevolking in de straten die we doorliepen.
In het stadhuis werden eerst nog enkele speeches gehouden door de plaatselijke bewindslieden, waarna de nieuwe burger ingeschreven werd in het bevolkingsregister, zoals het een nieuwe bewoner van een stad betaamd.

46° Keikoppen-karnavalstoet Poperinge 2012

Keikoppencarnaval 2012

Van vrijdag 16 tot en met zondag 18 maart 2012 zette Poperinge de feestneus op tijdens het carnavalsweekend.
De vzw Keikoppencarnaval organiseerde ook dit jaar weer tal van ludieke evenementen en carnavaleske activiteiten.

De busramp in Zwitserland trof de regio's Leuven en Limburg keihard maar ook elders in België leeft iedereen mee.
Zo ook in Poperinge.

Om een herdenkingsmoment op de Grote Markt te laten plaatsvinden, werd ‘de kei’ teruggelegd.
Alle inwoners die zich betrokken voelden, mochten op deze plaats vrijblijvend een keitje komen neerleggen. Dit eeuwenoud gebruik uit de Joodse cultuur wordt aanzien als een teken van rouw. De kei verwijst dan weer naar de baseline van Poperinge ‘Kei van een stad’. Het herdenkingsmoment vond plaats op vrijdag 16 maart, de dag van nationale rouw, en vlak voor de start van het Keikoppencarnaval.
Het carnavalsweekend zou doorgaan, maar in een aangepast kader.

De 46ste internationale Keikoppencarnavalstoet heeft veel volk naar Poperinge gelokt.
De zon was van de partij en er heerste een uitbundige sfeer.
Aan de deelnemende groepen en kermisuitbaters was gevraagd om de muziek niet te uitbundig te laten spelen maar daar was tijdens de stoet niet veel van te merken. Elke groep droeg symbolisch wel een tros witte ballonnen mee. De leden van de diverse muziekkorpsen droegen een wit lintje. Bij de diverse plechtigheden en feestelijkheden tijdens het carnavalsweekend werd ook telkens een minuut stilte gehouden.

'Je kunt onmogelijk verwachten dat men carnaval viert op een ingetogen manier. Feesten en rouwen, dat gaat gewoon niet samen. Op zo'n dag mag men toch wel eens wat plezier maken', merkte een Poperingse toeschouwer op. Dat was trouwens de mening van de meeste toeschouwers en deelnemers.
'Er was een stil moment na de kindercarnavalstoet vrijdag. Toen werden witte ballonnen opgelaten. Maar zondag tijdens de zondagse carnavalstoet mag het toch wel feest zijn. Als teken van medeleven dragen we witte ballonnen mee', vertelde Geert Dequecker van carnavalsgroep De Kastanje Krombeke. Ook Kristof Lobeau, voorzitter van de Orde van de Hommelknop, was die mening toegedaan.
'Alle activiteiten startten met een minuut stilte. Op die manier hebben we toch getoond dat we begaan zijn en meeleven met de slachtoffers en hun familie.'

Ik ben een man en woon in Izegem (België) en mijn beroep is Officiële Stadsomroeper van Izegem en museummedewerker.
