Bedfordshire police inspector Paul Kelly denies rape charges

A police inspector has denied raping and assaulting a woman in the 1990s.
Paul Kelly, 43, of Bedford Road, Denton, in Northamptonshire, is accused of two counts of rape, two counts of actual bodily harm and one count of sexual assault.
Mr Kelly, who works for Bedfordshire Police, was suspended from duty last December, the force said.
He appeared at St Albans Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Mr Kelly denied raping one woman on two occasions between 31 December 1996 and 1 January 1999.
He pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing the same woman actual bodily harm between the same dates.
The inspector also denied sexually assaulting a second woman between 30 November 2012 and 1 January 2013.
Mr Kelly, a father-of-two, had previously been an non-commissioned officer with military intelligence, but was suspended from duty last December.
Judge Stephen Warner granted him bail. A trial is scheduled to start on 8 December.
