§ 8.1 MIR en Schaum Outlines

In de vorige eeuw -en voornamelijk vanaf de jaren zestig (de Golden Sixties )- bestonden er een drietal uitgeverijen, die tegen een zeer billijke prijs wetenschappelijke boeken op de markt brachten en die dan ook door de studentengemeenschap intensief werden gekocht. 

Zeer bekend in de wetenschappelijke middens waren aldus de collecties MIR, Schaum en Dover. Een aparte en speciale plaats werd (en wordt nog altijd) ingenomen door de op examens gerichte collectie “Schaum”, waarover ik het verder uitvoerig zal hebben. Hoeveel studenten er geraakt zijn dank zij Schaum is moeilijk te schatten...

Het zijn nu deze boekencollecties, die een zeer belangrijke rol gespeeld hebben tijdens mijn "doctorale" periode aan de V.U.B. Dank zij deze boeken, die handelen over wis-, natuur- en scheikunde, heb ik mijn kennis in betreffende disciplines wat kunnen bijschaven.:idea: 

1° de collectie “MIR”:

De uitgeverij MIR werd in 1946 opgericht ⁽¹⁾ onder Joseph Stalin en in 1964 hervormd door Alekseï Kosygin. In 2008 werd de maatschappij door een failliet bedreigd, maar de uitgeverij slaagde er toch in te overleven. Deze uitgeverij had tot doel goedkope, wetenschappelijke literatuur van hoog tot zeer hoog niveau op de markt te brengen en deed hiervoor beroep op bekende Russische namen. Om een zo breed mogelijk publiek te bereiken werden –ook om propagandistische redenen- de monografieën vertaald in het Frans, Spaans, Portugees,.. en later zelfs in het Engels (boeken bestemd voor Indië). Het loont de moeite even rond te neuzen op de huidige website ⁽²⁾ om zich een idee te vormen van het belang van deze uitgeversmaatschappij.

De oorspronkelijke staatsuitgeverij was gevestigd in een imposant gebouw (zie ikoon) in de Rigastraat in Moskou. Door de staatstussenkomst waren deze boeken uiteraard erg goedkoop en ze vonden dan ook snel ingang in de Westerse studentenwereld, maar natuurlijk niet in de USA.

De monografieën hadden betrekking op wis-, natuur- en scheikunde en velen waren beschikbaar in het Russisch, Frans ⁽³⁾ , Portugees, Spaans... Later werden er zelfs enkele in het Engels vertaald en o.m. door Pergamon Press en MIT Press op de markt gebracht, wat de wetenschappelijke waarde van deze collectie duidelijk aantoont.

Het was mijn groeiende interesse in de biofysica, die mij op het spoor van deze collectie bracht. De meest belangrijke monografieën waren beschikbaar in de boekenwinkel van de ULB, die gelegen was op de hoek van de Adolphe Buyllaan en Paul Hégerlaan. Zo hebben de meeste (aangeduid met een *) dan ook een plaatsje in mijn bibliotheek verworven.

- monografieën handelend over Wiskunde:

De meest belangrijke werken waren hier “Cours des Mathématiquean des supérieures” van Vladimir Smirnov ⁽⁴⁾ en “Géométrie contemporaine: méthodes et applications ” van B. Doubrovine, S. Novikov ⁽⁵⁾ en A. Fomenko. Van dit laatste werk werd in 1992 een Engelse versie met als titel « Modern Geometry - Methods and Applications » door Springer op de markt gebracht. Het boek wordt beschouwd als DE bijbel van de moderne meetkunde.

Het Leerboek van Smirnov handelt hoofdzakelijk over “Analyse” en richt zich specifiek tot bachelors van de Faculteiten Fysica en Toegepaste Wetenschappen (Ingenieurs). Ook de 2 monografieën van Georgi Chilov “Analyse mathématique” waren waardevol want een Engelse versie verscheen bij MIT Press respectievelijk onder de titel “Elementary Real and Complex Analysis” (1973) en “Elementary Functional Analysis” (1974). Later werden beide boeken door Dover respectievelijk in 1990 en 1992 gepubliceerd en verdeeld.

Andere veel gebruikte monografieën waren van de hand van Nikolaï Efimov en Nikolaï Piskounov en Alekseï Kostrikin ⁽⁶⁾ en Alexandr Kurosh ⁽⁷⁾ .

De monografie van Kurosh legt een brug tussen de klassieke algebra en de abstracte algebra en was evenals het boek van Kostrikin bestemd voor bachelors uit de Faculteit Wiskunde. Laatstgenoemd boek behoort ongetwijfeld tot het beste van wat ooit over abstracte of moderne algebra is geschreven.

- monografieën handelend over Natuurkunde:

Zeer bekend was hier « Cours de Physique Théorique » van Lev Landau ⁽⁸⁾ en Evgueni Lifchitz ⁽⁹⁾ , een oeuvre, dat nog altijd als DE bijbel van de Theoretische Natuurkunde wordt beschouwd.
Een Engelse versie ⁽¹⁰⁾ van dit monumentale werk verscheen ook bij Pergamon Press (Butterworth- Heinemann).

Van Grigori Landsberg ⁽¹¹⁾ verscheen in 1948-1952 een driedelig zeer populair « Cours élémentaire de Physique », bestemd voor het hoger secundair onderwijs en dat diverse edities kende. De uitgever MIR schrijft over dit werk het volgende:

Le "Cours élémentaire de Physique'', publié pour la première fois en 1948-1952 sous la direction de l'académicien G. Landsberg, fut aussitôt hautement apprécié par les élèves des écoles secondaires, préparant leur baccalauréat. Le succès de cet ouvrage tient surtout au fait qu'il a été conçu par des physiciens éminents qui se sont partagé la tâche d'écrire, chacun dans sa spécialité, une partie de l'ouvrage.

Le premier tome a été conçu par S. Haïkine.M. Issacovitch, M. Léontovitch et D. Sakharov, le tome II, par S. Kalachnikov, et le tome III, par S. Rytov, M. Souchtchinski (avec la collaboration de I. Yakovicv ), F. Landsberg-Barychanskaïa et F. Chapiro. La direction et la rédaction finale de l'ouvrage furent assurées par G. Landsberg (1890-1957), éminent savant et pédagogue.

L'une des caractéristiques marquantes de l'ouvrage est qu'il ne contient que peu de formules et de développements mathématiques, le principal objectif de ses auteurs étant de mettre en évidence la nature des phénomènes physiques. Le niveau de l'exposé, quoique toujours élevé, est cependant parfaitement accessible aux écoliers. Une autre caractéristique de l'ouvrage réside dans le fait que les lois physiques y sont illustrées par un grand nombre d'applications techniques. C'est ce qui distingue ce cours de tous les autres ouvrages du même genre.

Er is bij MIR ook een Engelse versie onder de titel « Elementary Textbook on Physics » (Volumes 1-3, 7th Edition, 1971) beschikbaar.

Het « Cours de Physique Générale » van Dimitri Sivoukhine is van latere datum en bestemd voor bachelors. De oudere versie is praktisch onvindbaar en erg prijzig. MIR voorziet herdrukken maar tegen zeer hoge prijzen.

Thermodynamica bleek in Rusland traditioneel een geliefd werkdomein te zijn. Mikhael Leontovitch en Ivan Bazarov ⁽¹²⁾ zijn hier de auteurs bij uitstek.

Te vermelden is ook nog het vierdelig vulgarisatiewerk van Lev Landau en Alexandre Kitaïgorodski "La Physique à la portée de tous".

De monografieën van Nikolai Glinka (1882-1965) over Algemene Scheikunde zijn hoog aangeschreven en bestaan ook in Engelse versie (University Press of the Pacific). Deze editor schrijft het volgende over de auteur:

This textbook (“Problems in General Chemistry” -2006-) is intended for students who study chemistry independently or by correspondence. It contains over 850 problems and exercises related to various sections of general chemistry. Each chapter begins with sufficient theoretical detail and sample solutions of typical problems which will assist the student in problem solving and in future practical applications. After graduating from Moscow University in 1908 Nikolai Glinka did research for several years under N. D. Zelinsky. But he preferred teaching to research and took his doctorate in that field.

After twelve years teaching chemistry in Podolsk he was transferred to Moscow in 1924 by the People's Commissariat of Education. In 1940 he was appointed Head of the Chair of Inorganic and General Chemistry at the All-Union Polytechnical Correspondence Institute, a post he held to the end of his life. Prof. Glinka's first textbook Inorganic Chemistry, published in 1930, was reprinted five times. General Chemistry first appeared in 1940 and has had fourteen Russian editions. Another textbook by prof. Glinka, widely used in colleges, is Problems in General Chemistry. It has had nineteen Russian editions and has been translated into several languages.

De boeken van V. Alexeev handelen over de eigenlijke chemische analyse, een discipline die, door de opkomst van de spectroscopische technieken, veel aan belang heeft ingeboet. Een herwerkte, aangevulde editie verscheen echter nog in 1980.

2° de collectie “Schaum” van McGraw-Hill

Deze Amerikaanse boekenreeks werd geïntroduceerd in de jaren vijftig door Daniel Schaum ⁽¹³⁾ , en wordt tot op de dag van vandaag steeds verder uitgebreid. De titel van elk boek begint met “Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of..” en elk boek is inderdaad een syllabus (d.i. een samenvatting van een college-) maar waaraan een reeks oefeningen of vraagstukken –al of niet met oplossing- zijn toegevoegd.

De collectie kende en kent door deze originele formule een enorm succes, mede door het feit dat ze kwaliteit aan lage prijzen paart. Ook werd er bij de herdrukken rekening gehouden met nieuwe pedagogische inzichten of nieuwe technieken zoals het gebruik van de computer of van een (grafische) rekenmachine. Auteurs, die belangrijke bijdragen hebben geleverd tot de collectie zijn Frank Ayres Jr ⁽¹⁴⁾ , Seymour Lipschutz ⁽¹⁵⁾ en Murray Spiegel ⁽¹⁶⁾ .

Oorspronkelijk bevatte de collectie alleen wis- en natuurkundige onderwerpen op het niveau van het hoger secundair. In de jaren zestig werden hieraan ook onderwerpen van het niveau “undergraduate” (bachelor) toegevoegd. Nog later kwamen nu ook nieuwe onderwerpen bvb in betrekking tot economie, biowetenschappen (genetica, farmacologie.. ), grammatica en computerwetenschappen aan bod. Een verdere recente ontwikkeling van “Schaum’s Outlines” was het op de markt komen van “Schaum’s Easy Outlines”, die als “condensaten” van de overeenstemmende “Outlines” moeten beschouwd worden. Heden zijn sommige “Outlines” ook als e-book beschikbaar.

De reeks “Outlines” wordt voorgesteld wordt als zijnde syllabi, dus als supplement-, en niet als een leer- of studieboek (“Textbook”). In beginsel kunnen deze “Outlines” het overeenstemmende leerboek niet vervangen. Nochtans zijn er, althans volgens sommige lezers, toch enkele, die evenzeer als “textbook” kunnen dienen: ik citeer hier “Statistics”, “Discrete Mathematics” en “Quantum Mechanics”.

Ook in Europa verkreeg deze collectie vanaf de jaren zeventig enige vermaardheid en sommige syllabi werden dan ook in het Frans vertaald. Ze waren dan ook in de meeste wetenschappelijke boekhandels te vinden. De collectie Schaum werd en was van dit ogenblik voor mij een onmisbare partner, zowel bij mijn doctorale studie als bij mijn professionele activiteiten.
